Smallville fans who are miffed at The CW for moving your favorite show, you probably don’t want to read this.

The CW’s Thursday night time slot is showing serious ratings momentum as The Vampire Diaries posted its best ratings yet since the series premiere.

The Vampire Diaries drew in an estimated 3.8 million viewers last Thursday, October 15th.

Behind The Vampire Diaries, Supernatural is also on an up tick in the ratings as 2.6 million viewers also tuned in for that powerful episode.

These numbers are an increase over this time slot last year of 14% in adults 18-34, 43% in women 18-34, 7% in adults 18-49 and 36% in women 18-49.

I have to say, I’ve not been horribly disappointed with The Vampire Diaries and am totally loving the 5th season of Supernatural.

Jasmine Guy (A Different World) has been cast in The Vampire Diaries as the grandmother of Bonnie (Katerina Graham).

It turns out that Bonnie comes from a long family line of witches.

Having never heard of The Vampire Diaries, believe it or not, did we see witches coming down the story pipeline?  Why I didn’t, I don’t know.  Why not!?

This is a spoiler free chat.

The much heralded premiere of the fantasy TV series The Vampire Diaries on the CW finally aired. I came into this premiere incredibly hesitant, expecting to be disappointed to some degree. In short, I wasn’t overly enthused by it, but I probably won’t turn it off if it came on my TV while I was doing something else.

The premiere opened with a couple driving down a tree-lined road and as the car enters a thick fog, they hit a guy who was standing in the middle of the road. The driver gets out to check on the guy, and well, it’s a vampire show- you do the math. The female passenger gets out and starts screaming and running for her life towards the camera and then she gets snatched and disappears up into the air. That was cool. Classic, but cool.

The Vampire Diaries demonstrated some classic vampire lore, added one new facet to the lore that hasn’t been too overused and spent the first 1/2 of the episode defining characters. Usually, I would rather learn about characters over time, but this worked out OK.

I don’t know why a vampire, who has lived a long time, goes back to high school, but there you have it. Then we had some classic situations: Beer parties in the woods, Attacks being attributed to animals, Creeping fog, A mysterious crow flirting about in various scenes and Brothers in angst with each other.

Everyone keeps a dairy. Hence, I presume, the title, The Vampire Diaries. OK, not everyone, but our main characters Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrey) and Stefan Salvatore (Paul Wesley) both keep diaries which seems to be one of the connectors between them. That, and Elena looks a lot like someone the brothers knew from their past.

When Stefan’s brother, Damon (Ian Somerhalder), finally shows up, my test audience indicated some serious approval and they didn’t mind the show overall.

Regardless of what the naysayers think, the CW did indeed hit pay dirt with this premiere. With 4.8 million viewers, they outdid 90210 and Melrose Place, put together (I know you’re shocked at that one!). The CW says this was their most watched premiere to date.

I don’t think it’s terrible…  I’ll give it that. But there is a lot of rote vampire lore that they’re just regurgitating in the story. It will be up to the cast to generate the attention the show needs to retain all the viewers this premiere drew in. I have to wonder if a lot of those numbers were Twilight fans going through withdrawals waiting for the next chapter of their favored screen vamps?

The Vampire Diaries, the new show from the CW is about to kick it in gear on Thursday, September 10th and we have the latest preview of it for you.

The series is about Stefan Salvatore (Paul Wesley), a vampire who moves to Mystic Falls, Va., and falls for the local non-vampire girl Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrey). His brother, Damon (Ian Somerhalder), would love to just drain the local population, but Stefan wants to protect his love and possibly, other humans too.

Try to give the show a chance – Even if it did end up shoving Smallville off to Friday nights.  The Vampire Diaries will be the lead-in to Thursday nights Supernatural premiere.

The Office

So we recently let you Office fans know when you can expect Jim and Pam to walk down the aisle – four episodes into the news season. And now we have the first official wedding photo!

The scene was shot at a church in Van Nuys, California on this past weekend and from the photos below you can see that Pam (Jenna Fischer) will be a lovely bride and Jim (John Krasinski) will be every girl’s hometown-sweetheart Prince Charming.

Smallville

Actress Steph Song let it be known on her Twitter account yesterday that she will be playing the role of Roulette on the sixth episode of Smallville’s upcoming 9th season. In the DC Universe Roulette is a kick-ass madame of underground fighting tournaments, often using super heroes and/or villains as combatants.

Not sure how the character will be portrayed on Smallville, but I’ll sure tune in to find out!

The show returns on September 25th (that’s Friday now) @ 8/7c on the CW.

Saturday Night Live

Life & Style is exclusively reporting that “actress” Megan Fox will be the host kicking SNL’s 35th season on September 26th. Fox would naturally do the gig in order to further promote her upcoming high school comedy/horror flick Jennifer’s Body, and has reportedly been prepping to bring the yuck-yuck by doing a digital short with Andy Samberg.

I’m I the only one who thinks SNL could potentially be off to a bad start this decade year?

The Vampire Diaries, the new CW show that is taking Smallville’s old time slot on Thursdays, seems to have some sort of confused marketing scheme going on.

At one point one of the stars, Paul Wesley (pictured on the left), said that “Chicks dig vampires,” but then later said that was a scripted line for him to say, given to him by the network.  He wants people to know that is not how he really thinks.

He’s also been noted to say that there is very little makeup time for the actors who play vampires, and Wesley went on to further add that makeup time, working with children and animals is never fun, no matter what anyone says.

He’s even complaining about having to do cardio workouts every morning to stay in vampire shape, saying it sucks.

My first take on his statements is that they’re… confusing.  Is he really that grumpy about his job?  Is he already in Diva mode?

Then I started to ponder a little more and I have to wonder if with all the media attention the CW is trying to generate on the new show, if it’s just possible that his statements are all in character?  I ask that because Wesley’s character hates being a vampire and is in conflict with his dark, vampiric side.  Hence, my wondering.

The Vampire Diaries is about Stefan Salvatore (Paul Wesley), a vampire who moves to Mystic Falls, Va., and falls for local gal Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrey). His brother, Damon (Ian Somerhalder), would love to just drain the local population, but Stefan wants to protect his love and possibly other humans too.

The show will also include flashbacks to the Salvatore brothers’ earlier days, (during the Civil War period for example).  It seems that they will be exploring that part of the brothers lives to give them some depth.

The show is based on L.J. Smith’s series of books.  And as it’s been pointed out to me in the past, this is not a copy of Twilight, seeing as how this book series predates the Twilight series. Now the idea of televising a vampire amongst humanity story, well, that’s as old as time itself it seems.

As it stands, I will give it a try to see how it fares.  But one wrong move, and I’m going to write the CW and ask for a crossover episode with Supernatural, and request that the Winchester brothers end this show properly!

When I first wrote this article, I was basing my opinionated perspective on my initial source.  It was pointed out to me by a reader that there was more to the interview than met the eye, so I went to check it out.

It was a pretty lengthy interview and in that interview Paul Wesley did indeed have some things to say that if you focused on them, would make his answers seem a bit off, but in the reality of the full, at-length article he’s quoted to saying that he found the character appealing, he’s eager to tackle some of the stunt work, he talks about his character struggling with his dark side and other items.

Of note, are a few paragraphs that should be stated in full:

Q: How is the make-up for this?

Paul: Make-up is never fun. I don’t care what anybody says. Make-up is never fun. Neither is working with children or animals. Nobody wants to show up at six in the morning to get make-up. Good news is that we don’t have a lot of make-up. We really don’t. We have these contact lenses that we put in. I’ve worn contacts my whole life and it’s not a problem for me, so it really hasn’t been very bad.

And:

Q: What is your work-out regime? Has it changed now that you’re in Atlanta?

Paul: I’m trying to lean out as much as I can. I feel like vampires are these svelte creatures whose nutrition is essentially animal blood, so I knew that I couldn’t eat all these different carbs and sugars because it just didn’t feel right, physically and mentally. So, I’ve been limiting my intake, just because I feel like that’s what Stefan does, every day. For the first time in my life, I’ve been doing cardio. I’ve played sports, my whole life, and now I’m doing it, every morning. It sucks.

The CW Announced their 2009 Fall Schedule and it’s actually pretty thin as far as shows go compared to other networks.  But they do have a few shows we do want to see:  Smallville and Supernatural.

The CW doesn’t exactly fall into the category of power television with the likes of America’s Next Top Model or 90210 and such fare, but they do have a couple of shows that Screen Rant readers appreciate. Yet I’m sure you’d like to know what they have in store for their viewing audiences for the upcoming 2009 Fall season.

Not being able to leave well enough alone after 90210, The CW is rebooting and premiering Melrose Place.

For Gossip Girl and One Tree Hill fans, be alert.  They’ve swapped time slots.

Vampire Diaries is a new show starting up and is the lead-in to Supernatural.  I’m going to have another article on Vampire Diaries coming up pretty soon, so stay tuned for that.

Smallville starts its slow ratings death when it starts up on Friday’s.  (Do. Not. Get. Me. Started.)

There’s a show not on the schedule that will start at a later date called Life UneXpected.

The way The CW is treating Smallville, I guess those contract negotiations with Welling may have only been for one additional year and if I didn’t know any better, I’d say they aren’t expecting it to go beyond next season.

Be sure to set your DVR’s accordingly.  I am looking forward to Supernatural and I’m going to give Vampire Diaries a chance.  Not sure how much of one, but I will.  I swear, if they start this show and try to pack each character’s history into the first 5 minutes of their appearance, I’m jumping ship!  To me that is a sign of insecure plot development.

The CW released their 2009 lineup on Thursday, May 21st, following all the other network announcements this week.  The lineup has a few new shows, is down a couple of fan-favorite shows and has one schedule twist that surprised me, sort of.

The CW is now a power hitter in the chain of networks.  Their best rated show, America’s Next Top Model doesn’t even break the top 50 network shows.  I know… you’re shocked.

Despite the obvious numbers, Dawn Ostroff calls their lineup of shows “culturally current, quality programming.”  I guess that’s not inaccurate.

They only had 2 new shows to boast about, if you can call it boasting.

The revamped Melrose Place redo, and the thinly disguised Twilight copy, called Vampire Diaries.  It’s about teenage vampires.  I know.  We’ve never heard that theme before.

Aside from adding the two aforementioned shows, they’ve pulled (that’s canceled in street talk.) Privileged and Reaper.  For some reason they’d rather play an encore of dolls in heels (ANTM) on Friday’s than keep and air Reaper.

This tells me where their bread is buttered.

The other crazy news that came from The CW is that they’re adding the new Vampire Diaries in the time slot that Smallville had, and skewering Smallville by moving it to Friday nights where it will be the lead-in for the encore of America’s Next Top Model.  If Vampire Diaries flounders, this move is going to gravely injure both Supernatural and Smallville.

Supernatural will be hurt because Diaries is the lead-in show.  Smallville, because they’re getting the Foxed / Joss Whedon treatment.

Their programming outline has been referred to as narrow fem-driven strategy.  It’s not a bad strategy as the demographic of women do make just as powerful a spending impact as men.  We all blow money equally.  Yet this strategy seems to work better on networks that have successful ratings from other shows that draw viewers in.  I think it’s narrow-visioned, but that’s just me, the armchair network exec talking.

It seems that I’ve reported most of the developing TV news throughout the week.  I’m exhausted but I still dug up a few more bits about the Gossip Girl spin-off, a Chuck tidbit, the move that Smallville is making.

And I’ve got the usual set of numbers for the ratings from last week.

Gossip Girl Spin-off

The news is fickle and iffy that the Gossip Girl spin-off, tentatively titled Lily will happen.  Over the front half of the week, sources say it’s dead in the water.  Yet on Wednesday other sources are saying it’s not dead yet.  We’ll find out for sure today (Thursday).

The source that says it is dead has been pretty accurate this week, so for the moment, I am leaning towards DOA.

Chuck And Subway

Will that be white or wheat?

Concessions have been the name of the game in getting shows renewed.  Yes, it is a tough economy but things are still moving forward.

In the case of Chuck, NBC made a marketing deal with Subway.

Subway will become part of the show where one character will be working at the franchise. We’ll all be hungry for our Veggie-Delights after Chuck it may seem.

The CW Is Moving Smallville

To what night am I moving?

In a bit of preemptive news, The CW is splitting up the pair of shows Supernatural and Smallville that have been the mainstays for Thursday nights on The CW.

Part of the situation is that The CW is bringing in a new show called Vampire Diaries to take the place of Smallville.

Yes, you read right.  Smallville is moving to Friday nights.  When I found out, I twittered the following:  “Smallville to Fridays?  Has Fox taken over The CW?”

The hope by The CW is that the 3 million regular viewers will follow Smallville to Friday nights to give them some presence on the worst TV night of the week.

Laughingly, Smallville will be followed up by an encore showing of America’s Next Top Model.

It really sounds like The CW is giving the show the shovel.  We saw that moving The Sarah Connor Chronicles lost over 1/2 their viewers when it was moved to Friday nights.  Not to mention it will be up against Ghost Whisperer who sort of owns Friday nights, and is now teamed up with Medium and Numbers.

Statistically speaking, I think Smallville will be dead in the water with this move.  Maybe they know something we don’t about next season.

FYI:  Reaper is being reported as canceled.  Sorry Reaper fans.

Stop Me If You’ve Heard This Before

The new show that The CW is swapping into Smallville’s place is called Vampire Diaries.  It’s about high school students specifically…  (Have we heard this one yet?) and is about a girl who’s torn between two vampire brothers.

Sounds like a cheap effort to try and capitalize on the various vampire franchises popping up over night.  get it?  Over night.  That was a pun.  Sorry.
