One true classic and a few not-so-classic films hit DVD and Blu-ray this week. Next week has one of the best collections of new and old releases on the home video market, but until then, some lighthearted films will keep you entertained.

A massive box office bust (How Do You Know) and a box office surprise (Yogi Bear) go up against an A-lister romantic thriller (The Tourist) and the first alien invasion movie of the season (Skyline). But the release to own this week is the Blu-ray re-release of Stand By Me.

For 68 years, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association has been celebrating their favorites in film and television with the Golden Globe Awards.

Once again, the multifaceted and generally hilarious Ricky Gervais will be serving as host of tonight’s gala. While those in attendance will be filled with anticipation about whether or not they will take home the award in their chosen category, viewers at home will be anxiously waiting to see how far Gervais will push the comedic envelope with his monologue and numerous ad-libs throughout the night.

With 25 separate categories having to fit within tonight’s given time slot, something tells me that Gervais will be moving things along at a swift pace – all while sipping from his iconic glass a beer that always remains not-so-hidden beneath his podium.

As the ball dropped in Times Square and people everywhere sang inebriated versions of “Auld Lang Syne”, it marked the end of a lukewarm movie year. With 557 movies released in 2010, some of them were truly good and others were excruciatingly bad. People could argue all day about what makes a movie truly bad, but thankfully we have the 31st annual Golden Raspberry Awards to help us sort the chaff from the wheat.

Although the official list of nominees won’t release until January 24th, the L.A. Times Award Tracker blog has released the shortlist of nominees for the coveted “Razzie” or Golden Raspberry Award.

Here's our weekend box office report and various movie news tidbits we may have missed.

This week:

The Little Fockers show True Grit at the box office; Andrew Garfield goes from Spider-Man to Michael Mann in Capa alongside Gemma Arterton; Saw creators open Insidious on April Fool’s Day and Total Recall moves from Mars to Toronto.

Box Office

It was a close race over the weekend for the number one spot but it looks like Little Fockers will top the chart with an estimated $26.3 million for a total gross of $103 million. It appears that people are just too busy at Christmas to read reviews. That can be the only reason for the Fockers having two weeks at the top, right?

Jeff Bridges was in the runner-up position with True Grit. The Coen Brothers film upped its domestic total to $86.8 million after grossing $24.5 million over the weekend, giving the pair their highest grossing film ever. More gold awaits.

The box office meets the Little Fockers; we learn about the Madden Curse; Screen Gems asks About Last Night; Phillip Noyce cuts down on Salt; Christian Bale is a Nanjing Hero and Christina Hendricks, Olivia Munn and Seth Meyers don’t know how Sarah Jessica Parker Does It.

Box Office

The Focker family were the box office champions over the weekend. Little Fockers, the third film in the “Meet The…” franchise banked an estimated $34 million over the weekend (read our review). The Ben Stiller starrer has now scored $48 million since its launch last week. The grosses aren’t amazing for this pricey comedy, but it should be profitable in the end for Universal.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association has announced its nominations for the 68th Annual Golden Globes, which includes some no-brainers and a few shockers.

Celebrities Josh Duhamel, Katie Holmes, and Blair Underwood dragged themselves from the comfort of their beds early this morning to announce the nominations for this year’s other big cinematic awards, the Golden Globes.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association has unveiled its nominations for the 68th annual Golden Globes and, like any year’s crop of nominees, there are a few surprise choices, some unexpected snubs, and a number of highly anticipated selections.

Leading the movie pack with seven nominations is the period drama The King’s Speech, which began to garner serious awards buzz back when it toured the festival circuit this past fall. David Fincher’s The Social Network has already snagged a handful of critic’s choice awards and secured six Gold Globe nods, matching that of this month’s true-life boxing drama, The Fighter.
The Chronicles of Narnia gets that sinking feeling, but at least the crew aren’t feeling like a Tourist; apparently Guillermo del Toro just wasn’t busy enough; Sofia Vergara and Jessica Biel set a date for New Year’s Eve; Adam Sandler and Kevin James start the ignition for Valet Guys; Shia LaBeouf and Tom Hardy move to The Wettest County in the World; James Franco suffers from Maladies; we approach Serial Killer Days; Mark Wahlberg is a Teddy Bear; Chris Tucker is a Rabbit and did that book just move?
The defining characteristics of 'The Tourist' are its overt efforts to emphasize that Angelina Jolie is beautiful and that Johnny Depp is a 'regular guy.'

Screen Rant’s Vic Holtreman reviews The Tourist

Usually, it’s a Sci-Fi or superhero film that comes along from time to time which relies primarily on its “look” above everything else – one doesn’t usually expect a drama, romance or semi-action/adventure story to rely on its visual aspect to carry it. The Tourist does just that, whether that was director Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck’s intention or not.

Of course there are worse things than a film which stars Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp relying on its appearance.

We begin in the beautiful city of Paris, with the most beautiful Angelina Jolie (it’s the eyes I tell ya). She is so aristocratic here that she fairly glides across the screen – and she is under ...

Click to continue reading ‘The Tourist’ Review

Venice is a gorgeous European locale full of beautiful scenery, exotic dining spots, and Americans dashing for their lives after they inadvertently get involved in elaborate criminal plots. At least that’s the case in next week’s release, The Tourist, and we’re sticking by it.

Two new featurettes and a collection of clips have been released from the Johnny Depp/Angelina Jolie thriller, which could provide a few hours of fun (if slightly preposterous) escapism for moviegoers of all breeds.

The Tourist is a breezy thriller/romance from director Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck, who was responsible for the much gloomier Foreign Lanuage Oscar winner, The Lives of Others.
This week’s movie media roundup features a vengeance-fueled Dwayne Johnson in Faster; a beefed up but emotionally-torn Mark Wahlberg in The Fighter; and a flirtatious exchange between Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie in The Tourist.

All of these films arrive in U.S. theaters over the next three weeks (Holiday season) and look to appeal to a wide range of moviegoers whose interests include graphic violence, raw personal drama, and pretty people up to espionage-related hijinks overseas. Let’s get to it, shall we?

[UPDATE: We have a new poster for the Coen Brothers' western, True Grit as well.]

New posters have been unveiled, including that for a film that will be very gory, Saw 3D, a film that will be very pretty, The Tourist, and a film, the new Gulliver’s Travels, that, frankly, we don’t really understand why it exists in the first place.

Saw 3D

Saw 3D will be the first of these pics to hit theaters and it promises to be the no-holds-barred finale of the long-running Saw franchise. The horror pic should deliver plenty of nasty blood and guts for its fans, while the trailer suggests that it will also use the 3D technology in an effective manner.

Here is the official synopsis for Saw 3D, in case you were curious:

Box Office

Sly Stallone and his brigade of manly men retained the box office crown for a second weekend as The Expendables was top dog yet again. The ultra-explosive action flick grossed an estimated $16.5 million, raising its 10-day total to just under $65 million in the U.S. Does this mean Expendables 2 will happen after all? If it does, then Chuck Norris had better join the party the next time around.

Today we’ve got a new poster from this year’s 3D entry in the Resident Evil video game/zombie movie franchise, Resident Evil: Afterlife as well as the first image from the upcoming Johnny Depp/Angelina Jolie pairing The Tourist.

To add to the slew of casting announcements for Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck’s The Tourist, it’s just been announced that Timothy Dalton (License To Kill) and Steven Berkoff (Rambo) have joined Johnny Depp, Angelina Jolie and the rest of the cast. Coming Soon tipped us off.

Who are these people and what is this movie? Read on, adventurers.

The film follows an American tourist (Depp) who goes to Italy to mend a broken heart, meets a beautiful and mysterious woman (Jolie, obviously) and gets caught up in espionage. Depp and Jolie need no parenthetical work references, however Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck might.

Donnersmarck wrote and directed the excellent Das Leben der Anderen (aka The Lives of Others), which will be remade in the U.S. and produced by Harvey Weinstein, Sydney Pollack and Anthony Minghella. With the type of ...

Click to continue reading Dalton and Berkoff Join ‘The Tourist’

Alice stays in Wonderland, much to the disappointment of Jen and Gerard; Said says yes to Conan; Steve Guttenberg gets over excited when he hears that “old faces” will be returning to Police Academy; Renner, Hoffman and Anderson are looking for anyone with $35 million sitting around to finance The Master; want to read another sentence where I compare a potential film franchise to the Jason Bourne movies? If so check out Andy McNab’s Nick Stone film Echelon, and Paul Bettany and Rufus Sewell get their passports stamped for The Tourist.

Box Office

Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland remained at the top of the box office after grossing an estimated $30 million over the weekend. The film has now grossed over $260 at the US box office alone. If I had a time machine I’d go back to the 90’s and bet some serious Benjamins on Johnny Depp being ...

Click to continue reading Weekend Movie News Wrap Up: March 21st, 2010

When does the movie business ever go as planned? Rarely, it seems, as evidenced by the change-ups with the upcoming thriller The Tourist, the remake of the 2005 French film, Anthony Zimmer.

We recently reported that Angelina Jolie had replaced Charlize Theron in the movie, with Jolie joining the already-cast Sam Worthington (who originally replaced Tom Cruise). Then a week later came news that after previously attached director Bharat Nalluri had stepped away from the project, The Lives of Other director Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck was being eyed to helm the film instead.

All seemed to be in place and The Tourist was set for an early 2010 shooting start. However, although the latter is still true, there appears to STILL be major change-ups happening, as not only is yet another new director being looked at to now replace Donnersmarck, ...

Click to continue reading Johnny Depp Replacing Sam Worthington In ‘The Tourist?’

The box office says This Is It; The Tourist finally gets its bags packed; Billy Bob Thornton and Dwayne Johnson go Faster; Ricky Gervais hosts The Golden Globes and DeNiro and Stiller are hanging out with the Little Fockers.

Box Office

Michael Jackson’s This Is It topped the box office over the Halloween weekend with an estimated $21 million. The concert film has made $32 million in the US in the five days since it opened. It’s an okay start for the movie, but not the huge debut that Sony was hoping for. It’s doing twice as well overseas and has brought in about $100MM worldwide so far.

Paranormal Activity scared-up another $16.5 million over the spooky weekend giving the $11, 000 budgeted film a mind-boggling $84.7 million total. Ka-ching!

Law Abiding Citizen banked another $7 million ...

Click to continue reading Weekend Movie News Wrap Up: November 1st, 2009

Last week we reported on the possibility of Angelina Jolie replacing Charlize Theron in the upcoming thriller, The Tourist. Along with that news, we also learned that the previously attached director, Bharat Nalluri, had stepped away from the project, leaving the producers actively seeking a new director. And today we get the news that a new director has been found in the form of German helmer Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck (The Lives of Others).

Variety reports that although Donnersmarck has yet to officially enter into negotiations for The Tourist with Spyglass Entertainment, the talks are expected to happen very soon. Jolie was contacted by the studio a couple of weeks ago about starring in the project in place of Theron, but her involvement was said to be contingent on finding the right director. After meeting ...

Click to continue reading New Director Being Eyed For ‘The Tourist’
