Every year, literally hundreds of films are released around the world, and movie posters are one way studios promote these films. Some posters are fantastic – showing the creativity of the artist and/or studio promoting the film. Others are just lazy and unoriginal, showing nothing more than images of the main characters staring intently into space. Others still are just laughably and ridiculously bad, showing that almost no thought or effort went into making them.

There were over 1,000 movie posters released this year, but since there isn’t a central database containing every poster, there is a chance we might have left out your favorite. Still, we managed to sort through the dreck and mundane offerings to bring you what ...

Weekend Box Office Wrap Up: October 30th, 2011

This week:

Puss In Boots animates the box office as the Spanish voiced kitty tops the chart, Paranormal Activity 3 continues to scare audiences and Justin Timberlake’s In Time is out of luck.

Shrek spin-off Puss In Boots (read our review) topped the box office over the weekend with an estimated $33 million take. The Antonio Banderas voiced ‘toon banked roughly 50% less than Shrek Forever After, which brought in $70 million worth of green on its debut last year. That film went on to gross over $258 million at the US box office and $752 million worldwide – pretty good considering that it was the second lowest grossing film in the series (the first film holds that honor). This week:

Paranormal Activity 3 scares away the competition at the box office; it’s not all for one and one for all for The Three Musketeers - and Johnny English may be Reborn but he’s not topping the box office chart.

The Paranormal Activity franchise is the gift that keeps on giving to Paramount – the films are cheap to produce and they make back some serious coin. This latest installment is budgeted at $5 million, but it should gross over ten times that ($54 million) by Monday morning. The first Paranormal Activity cost just $15,000 (yeah – you read that right) and went on to score $107 million ($193 million globally) – while the sequel opened to $40 million on its way to $84 million ($177 million worldwide) from a $3 million budget.

It seems that the tale of The Three Musketeers must be re-told on film at least once every generation. This 2011 re-imaging of Alexandre Dumas’ legendary story comes our way in an action-stuffed 3D package, courtesy of Resident Evil director, Paul W.S. Anderson.

Those who know of Anderson’s style of filmmaking already know what to expect from this film; for those unfamiliar, here’s a quick description: over-the-top action, weak scripts, and a sense that the cast of actors have their tongues firmly planted against their cheeks. ‘Star Wars: Episode 1′ 3D Trailer Debuting with ‘The Three Musketeers’

If there’s one inside-joke that resonates among all film geeks, it’s likely the never-ending parade of Star Wars saga tweaks and re-releases - implemented by creator/director George Lucas. As a result, it was hardly a surprise to hear that, shortly after the series released on blu-ray, the entire Star Wars saga would once again be returning to theaters – this time in 3D.

Considering the first 3D installment, Star Wars: Episode 1- The Phantom Menace is scheduled premier on February 10, 2012, it was only a matter of time before LucasFilms teased fans with a sneak peek at the fan-favorite saga in the third dimension. ‘Three Musketeers’ Featurette Promises A Truly ‘Updated’ Adaptation

Filmmaker Paul W.S. Anderson and his wife/muse Milla Jovovich are teaming up for a non-Resident Evil action movie this year with The Three Musketeers, the latest screen adaptation of Alexander Dumas’ beloved 1844 adventure novel.

A new featurette has been released for the film, which aims to be even more of an “updated” and contemporary take on the Three Musketeers story than Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes or any one of the upcoming modernized takes on classic 19th century literature (see: Frankenstein, The Invisible Man, etc.).

The previous Three Musketeers trailers have made it no secret that Anderson’s film not only adds 3D gimmickry and modern action movie staples to the mix (slow-mo fighting, accelerated editing), it also incorporates seemingly incongruous technology into the story. New ‘Three Musketeers’ Trailer Offers Absurd Take on Classic Tale

Paul W.S. Anderson isn’t known for his subtlety (see any of his Resident Evil movies), but the new trailer for his upcoming take on The Three Musketeers may take the cake for eye-popping, utterly ridiculous, completely over-the-top action.

Like the first trailer for The Three Musketeers, this new trailer offers a decidedly new vision of Alexandre Dumas’ classic novel. And by new, I mean ridiculous. In a mere two minutes, the trailer shows off a massive aerial battle (with authentic 17th century pirate ship/blimps), flamethrowers, explosions, and more slow motion than a sports highlight reel.

Of course, all of this in-your-face action is intentional. As star Logan Lerman told Screen Rant back in April, this iteration of The Three Musketeers is supposed to be the most “badass” version ...

Logan Lerman Interview: ‘The Three Musketeers’ is the Most ‘Badass’ Yet

Last week at WonderCon Summit Entertainment screened a sneak peek of their upcoming action adventure The Three Musketeers.

In addition to the footage that was presented, Summit offered select press interviews with Logan Lerman (Percy Jackson, 3:10 to Yuma) who plays D’Artagnan in the film.

Lerman found the experience of portraying “one of the most iconic characters in literature” to be an incredible one.

The young actor embraced the opportunity to be a part of the retelling of one of his grandfather’s most beloved tales. When asked how his interpretation would differ from the previous depictions of D’Artagnan, Lerman replied:

‘The Three Musketeers’ Trailer – Fun, Adventure & 3D Gimmicks

There are a couple of movies coming at us based on the legend of The Three Musketeers, so if you need some frame of reference about which Musketeers project today’s trailer is promoting – it’s the one coming at us (literally) from Paul W.S. Anderson, director of Resident Evil and Death Race.

The trailer features a cast of familiar actors (young and old) having a good enough time, and even Anderson’s wife (and Resident Evil star) Milla Jovovich, who doesn’t let a billowing period piece costume and corset stop her from kicking ass…all in 3D, of course.

There are over 150 movies releasing in theaters this year and you can get a detailed look at each month’s releases in our Massive 2011 Movie Preview. As the year progresses, we can expect PR departments from various studios to begin ramping up the marketing pushes on all of these films.

One way they build excitement for a film is by releasing still images, which usually consist of behind-the-scenes material, freeze frames from the movie (out of context of course) or occasionally a “cell phone reporter” will snap a picture or two while a film is shooting. Sometimes a studio will just take a Hi-Res still from the latest trailer and call it “new.”

Orlando Bloom & James Corden Join The Three Musketeers

The cast for Summit Entertainment’s 3D update of The Three Musketeers expanded over the weekend with the announcement that pretty boy Orlando Bloom and comedian James Corden would be coming onboard.

It has been a busy two weeks for the latest cinematic incarnation of The Three Musketeers, which will be helmed by Paul W.S. Anderson (Residen Evil: Afterlife). First the main cast for the period adventure was announced, then Summit Entertainment officially picked up the distribution rights, and now franchise star Bloom (Lord of the Rings, Pirates of the Caribbean) and funnyman Corden (Gulliver’s Travels) will lend their respective starpower to the flick as well.

Adapting Alexandre Dumas’ classic novel this time around will be the properly British screenwriter Andrew Davies (Bridget Jones’ Diary) and the more American-style action scribe Alex Litvak (Predators). ...

This week:

The box office sees green as Shrek attacks the top spot; Alfred Molina joins Taylor Lautner in Abduction; Juno Temple has signed onto The Three Musketeers; Cinderella wears Prada; Gerard Butler is the latest star to be Born; MTV goes howling mad for Teen Wolf; plus lots more!Shrek: Forever After led the box office charge over the weekend. The 3D ogre tale managed to scrape in roughly $72 million worth of green. While the film’s opening isn’t a disaster, it is a lacklustre debut for the pricey animated film and it’ll need good legs and strong international grosses to turn a profit. It looks like this really might be forever after for Shrek!

Summit Entertainment Picks Up 3D ‘Three Musketeers’

A few days ago the principal cast was announced for Paul W.S. Anderson’s 3D version of The Three Musketeers. Amongst the confirmed cast was Ray Stevenson (Rome, Thor), Luke Evans (Clash of the Titans) and Matthew Macfadyen (Robin Hood) as the Musketeers Porthos, Athos and Aramis, respectively.

Also announced were Christoph Waltz (Inglourious Basterds) as Cardinal Richelieu, Madds Mikkelsen (Casino Royale) as Rochefort, and Milla Jovovich as Milady de Winter, with Logan Lerman (Percy Jackson) attached to play D’Artagnan.

Announcing so much of the cast so suddenly suggested that Anderson and Co. are hurrying to get the Musketeers into production ASAP. And today comes news which confirms that suspicion.

Cast Announced for 3D ‘Three Musketeers’ Movie

For whatever reason the classic Alexandre Dumas tale, The Three Musketeers, has become a hot commodity in Hollywood as of late. There are already three separate movies in the works: one which recently snagged Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity), one we heard of a while back and haven’t heard much of since, and finally, one to be directed in 3D by Paul W.S. Anderson (Resident Evil, Aliens vs. Predator).

Today it’s been announced who will fill out the main cast of Anderson’s 3D Musketeers, including an actor who I’m particularly stoked about.

Doug Liman to Direct ‘The Three Musketeers’

If the idea of a big studio producing an “updated” version (in the vein of the recent Sherlock Holmes film) of Alexander Dumas’ classic adventure novel The Three Musketeers in 3D that will be helmed by a successful action genre director sounds more than a bit familiar, don’t worry, it’s not just you.

Studio heads over at Warner Brothers are currently holding negotiations with Doug Liman (director of The Bourney Identity and Mr. and Mrs. Smith) to direct a new version of Dumas’ tale of three French musketeers who enlist a young man named D’Artagnan in their battle against an evil cardinal. It will be produced by Lionel Wigram (the fellow behind -gasp- this winter’s Sherlock Holmes) and scripted by Peter Straughan (The Men Who Stare at Goats).

The Three Musketeers To Get ‘Sherlock Holmes’ Treatment

Just like he did with the legacy of detective Sherlock Holmes, producer Lionel Wigram will bring to us a new version of The Three Musketeers. A screenwriter for the project has already been found in the form of Peter Straughan (The Men Who Stare At Goats) with aims to update the tale for “young and contemporary audiences” (logically).

Variety reports that The Three Musketeers has been set up at Warner Bros. and ironically enough Wigram was once a WB exec who helped oversee the first three Harry Potter movies and now has a first-look deal with the studio. In the same fashion as the new Sherlock Holmes (which Wigram co-wrote and produced), this version of the Musketeers will play up the sexier and action-packed elements of the story.

The Three Musketeers To Get The 3D Treatment

Will anything be safe from the 3D makeover? With the way things are going, it doesn’t look like it. We learn today that Paul W.S. Anderson (Death Race, Event Horizon) will direct a new adaptation of Alexandre Dumas’ The Three Musketeers – in 3D no less. He has co-written the script with Andrew Davies (Bridget Jones’s Diary), a script which is said to “modernize” the musketeers.

Whether justified or not, “Oh dear…” is my first thought…

This new adaptation of The Three Musketeers can be assumed to have nothing to do with the one we heard about last June, which was planned at the time by Millenium Films. This one is being produced by Impact Pictures’ Jeremy Bolt and Constantin Film’s Robert Kulzer (both companies are financing the project), with Anderson himself co-producing.
