Tonight, the who’s who in Hollywood are gathered at the illustrious Kodak Theatre for the 83rd Academy Awards.

With The Social Network and The King’s Speech proving to be this year’s favorites, it appears that all of the suspense is gone of hearing who will take home the coveted Oscar. Of course, if the mixture of Hollywood and live television has taught us anything, surprises can and do happen.

UPDATE: Well the Oscars are over and we nailed it in all except two categories with our predictions. Check out the full list of Oscar Winners 2011.

This weekend movie fans will bear witness to the 83rd Academy Awards, and like in years past, the 2011 Oscar race is shaping up to be more a confirmation of what everybody already suspects, rather than a thrilling race between neck-and-neck films, actors, and directors who are all hoping to walk away basking in Oscar’s glory.

With films like Black Swan, The Fighter, Inception, True Grit, The Social Network, The King’s Speech, 127 Hours, Toy Story 3, and even Iron Man 2 up for nominations in different categories, the 2011 Oscars ceremony will offer something for arthouse, mainstream, and fanboy cinephiles alike.

Oscars 2011 Spotlight: Best Cinematography

This year’s crop of nominees for Best Cinematography all bring something unique to the visual table. Some went with a traditional hand-held approach, while others show vast landscapes and the characters within. Only one can walk away with the Oscar, but each is deserving of a nomination.

Four established cinematographers challenge a relative newcomer, but the crop is filled with pure talent. Each film approached the visual aesthetic in a different way and the result is a compilation of films that stand out from one another, but make for an inspiring year in cinematography.

While each of the five nominees are deserving, some snubs deserve mention. Robert Richardson’s cinematography in Shutter Island helped it stand out, but the lengthy gap between its release and the Oscars may have hurt its chances. Enter the Void is arguably the ...

‘King’s Speech’ & ‘Social Network’ Win Big at BAFTAs

The British Academy Film Awards – or as most Americans refer to them, “the British version of the Academy Awards” – were held last night. As one of the more respected entertainment awards shows, the BAFTA film awards tend to, but don’t always, predict the big winners for the subsequent Oscars, which will be held in two weeks’ time on February 27th.

In an unsurprising turn, Tom Hooper’s favored film, The King’s Speech, starring Colin Firth, Helena Bonham Carter, and Geoffrey Rush, and David Fincher’s The Social Network, starring Jesse Eisenberg and Andrew Garfield, were the big winners of the night.

Sometimes it feels like everybody has made a parody or mashup of famous movies – even we’ve taken a stab at it with the Toy Story 3: Inception trailer. But a group of “bros” at Atomic Productions put together the most impressive trailer remake we’ve seen in quite some time. An ode to The Social Network‘s trailer, the group made a hilarious parody of college life as they see it with The Brocial Network.

In this parody, the filmmakers put maximum effort into properly re-creating the atmosphere and tone of The Social Network. Only this time it is set at the University of Texas and deals with…less impressive students.

2011 Golden Globe Award Winners

For 68 years, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association has been celebrating their favorites in film and television with the Golden Globe Awards.

Once again, the multifaceted and generally hilarious Ricky Gervais will be serving as host of tonight’s gala. While those in attendance will be filled with anticipation about whether or not they will take home the award in their chosen category, viewers at home will be anxiously waiting to see how far Gervais will push the comedic envelope with his monologue and numerous ad-libs throughout the night.

With 25 separate categories having to fit within tonight’s given time slot, something tells me that Gervais will be moving things along at a swift pace – all while sipping from his iconic glass a beer that always remains not-so-hidden beneath his podium.

This week’s DVD and Blu-ray releases offer up an exciting new release and a pair of classics to spend your lingering holiday money on. While the potentially Oscar-winning new release will make plenty of noise on shelves, the two Blu-ray re-releases have us smiling this week.

Dances With Wolves and Raging Bull both celebrate special anniversaries with expanded Blu-rays. MGM may have had some troubles in 2010, but these two releases give us something to appreciate from the studio.

‘The Social Network’ Signs Back Into Theaters On January 7th

The second week of January will be unofficially sponsored by The Social Network. The critically-acclaimed film will re-release in 600 theaters on January 7th, followed by a DVD/Blu-ray release on January 11th.

At least one film seems to re-release every year just in time for a late Oscars push. But there is more on the table for The Social Network. During its initial 96-day run, the movie made $196 million worldwide. This re-release should bring it past the $200 million mark, which is a healthy return on a $50 million production budget.

The last memorable re-release was Avatar. The highest-grossing film of all time went back to theaters and mustered up a mere $4 million in its first weekend of re-release. James Cameron’s blockbuster added some previously cut footage to the theatrical ...

For 37 years, the People’s Choice Awards has been celebrating the fan favorites in film, television and music. In preparation for tonight’s awards ceremony, over 35 million votes were cast by the American public in hopes that their favorite film, television series, actor or musician will take home this coveted award.

For the second year in a row, the multifaceted Queen Latifah will be serving as host of this fanatical gala. With over 43 separate categories having to fit within the given timeslot, something tells me that Queen Latifah is going to be forced to move things along at a swift pace in order to fit each category within the 2-hour time-limit.

When awards season rolls around every year there always seems to be a group of films that are tapped to pick up their share of the major awards. 2010 is no exception and this year the likes of Toy Story 3, Inception, The King’s Speech, The Social Network, Black Swan and The Fighter are among those which have won awards already and look likely to pick up some Oscars as well.

However, when it comes to the Screen Actors Guild (SAG), the Directors Guild of America (DGA) and the Writers Guild of America (WGA), there are rules which often prohibit certain awards favorites from winning in some of the big categories offered by awards ceremonies.

The end of 2010 is nigh and with it comes the expected avalanche of features, articles, and videos chronicling the best/worst movies to hit theaters over the past 365 days or so. Whether you think 2010 was a weak or strong year for cinema overall, there’s no denying that it had its share of poignant drama, side-splitting humor, nightmarish horror, gritty action, and lots of eye-popping visuals in both 2D and 3D.

Most 2010 film retrospective videos released so far have attempted to cram in as many visually dazzling or intensely memorable moments from this year’s most popular releases as possible – so chances are we’re all gong to be mildly sick of seeing the same exact clips (awesome though they may be) from films like Inception or The Social Network by the time 2011 finally arrives.

‘The Fighter’ Leads 2011 Screen Actors Guild Award Nominations

The Screen Actors Guild announced nominations for the 17th annual SAG Awards this morning.

The nominees reaffirmed many of the front-runners for possible Academy Award nominations.

In the leading female actor category, Natalie Portman earned a rightful nomination for her work in Black Swan, but she’ll be running against stiff competition from Nicole Kidman in Rabbit Hole, along with many other notable actresses. In the leading male actor category, Jeff Bridges was recognized for his take on the iconic character of Rooster Cogburn in True Grit, but he’ll face strong competition from young actors Jesse Eisenberg in The Social Network and James Franco in 127 Hours.

2011 Golden Globe Nominations Announced

Celebrities Josh Duhamel, Katie Holmes, and Blair Underwood dragged themselves from the comfort of their beds early this morning to announce the nominations for this year’s other big cinematic awards, the Golden Globes.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association has unveiled its nominations for the 68th annual Golden Globes and, like any year’s crop of nominees, there are a few surprise choices, some unexpected snubs, and a number of highly anticipated selections.

Leading the movie pack with seven nominations is the period drama The King’s Speech, which began to garner serious awards buzz back when it toured the festival circuit this past fall. David Fincher’s The Social Network has already snagged a handful of critic’s choice awards and secured six Gold Globe nods, matching that of this month’s true-life boxing drama, The Fighter. AFI Lists Top 10 Movies and TV Programs of 2010

The American Film Institute announced its list of the Top 10 movies of 2010 today, giving film fans a likely glimpse at many of the movies in contention for the Best Picture Oscar at this year’s Academy Awards.

AFI’s Top 10 films represent a wide range of styles, from the brainy big budget action film Inception and the animated Toy Story 3 to the low-budget indie films Winter’s Bone and The Kids Are All Right.

Several of the films on the list, including True Grit and The Fighter, have yet to make nationwide releases, but are already racking up major points with critics. Our own Kofi Outlaw gave The Fighter a perfect five star review.

Justin Timberlake Campaigning for ‘Social Network’ Supporting Actor Oscar Nomination

The Social Network was one of the best received movies of the past year—critically and otherwise—and it’s practically guaranteed a Best Picture nomination at the 2011 Academy Awards, if not the Oscar itself. You can also expect to see director David Finch, actor Jesse Eisenberg, and writer Aaron Sorkin to get nominations in their respective fields.

But what about the rest of the cast? What’s the likelihood that, say, singer-dancer-actor Justin Timberlake, who played Napster creator Sean Parker, might get nominated in the Best Supporting Actor category? According to The New York Post, Timberlake is bound and determined to get said nomination, to the point that he plans to campaign personally by attending Academy screenings and rubbing elbows with the Hollywood elite.

Weekend Movie News Wrap Up: November 7, 2010

The box office is Mega; Relativity Media cracks the Bible Code; Cillian Murphy, Sigourney Weaver and Robert De Niro turn on Red Lights; Tropic Thunder’s Ben Stiller, Justin Theroux and Steve Coogan go Documental; Eli Roth brings you Psycho Killer and Aaron Eckhart is The Expatriate.

Box Office

Megamind (read our review) flew to the top of the box office after grossing an impressive $47.6 million over the weekend. The 3D animated film features the vocal talents of Will Ferrell, Tina Fey, and Brad Pitt.

Due Date (read our review) with Robert Downey Jr. and Zach Galifianakis had to settle for second place, but it took in a decent $33.5 million. The film, which was directed by The Hangover’s Todd Phillips, again shows RDJ’s new and reclaimed star power.

A lot of people see Saw; get ready to meet Abe Lincoln: Vampire Hunter; prepare for The Demonologists, Paul Haggis goes to prison; Willem Dafoe, Sam Neill and Frances O’Connor go hunting; Pete Segal has a Grudge, Daniel Craig’s Dream House is a nightmare; Kilmer and Coppola are Twixt Now and Sunrise and lots more.

Box Office

Saw 3D (read our review and Saw in 6:66 feature) ousted Paranormal Activity 2 from the top spot and secured the lead over the Halloween weekend. The 3D horror sequel brought in an estimated $24.5 million to scare the beejeezus out of audiences- not bad for a film with a $20 million budget. While it’s not the best start for the franchise, it does beat the debut of last year’s installment. This might not be the last Saw after all.

This weekend Paranormal Activity 2 captures the top spot; Tea Leoni joins Tower Heist; Shawn Ryan is Without Remorse; Pierre Morel is taken by Ouija; Mark Wahlberg and Kate Beckinsale have Contraband; Richard Branson and McG discover America, and more.

Box Office

Paranormal Activity 2 (read our review) scared away all the competition over the weekend. The horror sequel grossed a mighty $43.5 million over the three days– not bad for a film that only cost just $3 million to produce.

Jackass 3D dropped to second place after grossing almost 60% less than last weekend’s debut. Don’t feel too sorry for the Jackass crew – as the film still nabbed another $21 million for a $87 million total.

Bruce Willis’ Red held up exceptionally well. The action film banked about $15 million over ...
