This week:

Puss in Boots steals the top spot from Eddie Murphy and Ben Stiller; Harold and Kumar have a flat 3D debut and Paranormal Activity 3 continues to scare audiences.

Word of the week: Disappointment.

Puss in Boots led the way at the box office – beating the combined star wattage of Ben Stiller and Eddie Murphy. The animated film dropped just 10% from last week, grossing an impressive $33 million. The Shrek spin-off now has $76.6 million in the kitty, with more on the way as the holiday season approaches.

$24.6 million is quite a disappointment for director Brett Ratner’s Tower Heist, as the film was expected to steal the top spot. The Ben Stiller/Eddie Murphy film has had decent reviews (read ours), but it failed to connect with audiences. The heist caper ...

Click to continue reading Weekend Box Office Wrap Up: November 6th, 2011

This week:

Puss In Boots animates the box office as the Spanish voiced kitty tops the chart, Paranormal Activity 3 continues to scare audiences and Justin Timberlake’s In Time is out of luck.

Shrek spin-off Puss In Boots (read our review) topped the box office over the weekend with an estimated $33 million take. The Antonio Banderas voiced ‘toon banked roughly 50% less than Shrek Forever After, which brought in $70 million worth of green on its debut last year. That film went on to gross over $258 million at the US box office and $752 million worldwide – pretty good considering that it was the second lowest grossing film in the series (the first film holds that honor). Now, Puss In Boots won’t scale the dizzy heights of the other ...

Click to continue reading Weekend Box Office Wrap Up: October 30th, 2011

Is 'The Rum Diary,' starring Johnny Depp in an adaptation of the Hunter S. Thompson's novel, a quirky, fun ride - or too disjointed to work as a film? Read our review.

Screen Rant’s Ben Kendrick reviews The Rum Diary

For anyone familiar with writer Hunter S. Thompson, it’s especially appropriate that actor Johnny Depp is headlining the author’s latest novel-turned-film adaptation, The Rum Diary – as both men are known for especially intense (and bizarre) work ethics. Depp portrays some of the most oddball and intricate characters in Hollywood and Thompson is credited as the founder of Gonzo Journalism – an approach to reporting where the writer actually tosses objectivity (and sometimes fact) out the window and directly engages with the various lifestyles and personalities at the center of a story (to get at a larger “truth”).

However, does the film version of Paul Kemp, the fictional main character in The Rum Diary who also becomes enveloped in ...

Click to continue reading ‘The Rum Diary’ Review

Johnny Depp drinks and flirts with Amber Heard in the latest footage from 'The Rum Diary', which sees the eccentric performer get back in Hunter S. Thompson mode.

Those who are expecting Johnny Depp’s Hunter S. Thompson persona in The Rum Diary (a.k.a. Paul Kemp) to be as outrageous and mentally-unbounded as his Raoul Duke was in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas… well, you’re probably going to be a bit disappointed.

However, as the latest clips and TV spots released for writer/director Bruce Robinson’s Rum Diary adaptation demonstrate, there will still be plenty of Depp getting up to booze-fueled debauchery – and even some fully-realized character drama.

Rum Diary won’t be another financial blockbuster for Depp, but seems like an entertaining romp that sees the actor deliver a far more energized performance than he did this past summer in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.
An extended TV spot for 'The Rum Diary' focuses more on the film's plot, but still includes plenty of Paul Kemp's (Johnny Depp) alcohol-fueled shenanigans.

Hunter S. Thompson fans were very pleased to see Johnny Depp once again play one of the late writer’s alter egos in the recently-released Rum Diary trailer. The film won’t be the unhinged trip that Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas was, but there will still be plenty of booze-fueled debauchery and anti-authoritative activity going on in writer/director Bruce Robinson’s adaptation.

A minute-long TV spot/trailer for The Rum Diary has popped up online – and while it basically boils down to a streamlined version of the official trailer, it’s still definitely worth a look.

The Rum Diary has taken a while to finally make its way into theaters, despite having a cast that includes Depp, Aron Eckhart (The Dark Knight), Amber Heard (Pineapple Express), Giovanni Ribisi (Avatar), Richard Jenkins (Burn After Reading), ...

Click to continue reading ‘Rum Diary’ TV Trailer: More Plot, Fewer Johnny Depp Antics

The fact that Johnny Depp is a big fan of the late “father of Gonzo journalism” Hunter S. Thompson is no secret.

Depp played Thompson’s alter-ego, Raoul Duke, in Terry Gilliam’s Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas, narrated Alex Gibney’s documentary Gonzo: The Life and Work of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson, and was a good friend of the real Thompson – enough so to finance his private funeral, where the late writer’s remains were shot out of a canon, along with a collection of fireworks.

This fall’s The Rum Diary sees Depp tackle yet another of Thompson’s aliases: Paul Kemp, a New York journalist who travels to San Juan, Puerto Rico, in order to work for a local paper and instead raises hell, fueled by booze, lust, and a desire to upend the status ...

Click to continue reading ‘Rum Diary’ Trailer: Johnny Depp Drinking & Partying In Puerto Rico
