Here’s our box office report for the weekend of April 27th – featuring new releases ‘The Raven’, ‘The Five-Year Engagement’ and 'Safe' as well as returning films like 'Think Like A Man' and ‘The Lucky One’.

Last weekend’s champion Think Like A Man retained its grip at the top of the box office, grossing $18 million. The comedy raised it’s cume to an impressive $60.6 million, after it fought off competition from four new wide releases.

Pirates! Band of Misfits made off with $11.4 million worth of loot from audiences. The Hugh Grant voiced animation has already scored over $55 million from the high seas abroad. The launch is a bit below Arthur Christmas’ $12 million debut. That film went on to gross $46 million, although Pirates! should do a little less.

Zac Efron’s romance The Lucky One upped its total gross to a solid $39.9 million, after banking an additional $11.3 million. It’s a good number, but it won’t hit the heights of fellow ...

Click to continue reading Weekend Box Office Wrap Up: April 29, 2012

Has director James McTeigue successfully merged a fictional account of Edgar Allan Poe's last days with a compelling murder mystery thriller or will 'The Raven' leave you muttering, 'nevermore'? Read our review.

Screen Rant’s Ben Kendrick reviews The Raven

The titling of director James McTeigue’s Edgar Allan Poe thriller, The Raven, has no doubt confused plenty of would-be moviegoers ever since the film was first announced back in 2009. Instead of a retelling of Poe’s most famous poem, The Raven is actually a fictionalized narrative centered around the final days of the writer’s life – recasting Poe as a reluctant but brave hero that, along with a determined Baltimore detective, attempts to solve a string of grisly murders.

The re-imagined historical figures genre has become a new testing ground for Hollywood, most notably with Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter on the horizon (FYI: Edgar Allan Poe makes a guest appearance in the novel), where writers can take household names – and put a ...

Click to continue reading ‘The Raven’ Review

Now that the 'Hunger Games' craze is slowing down, it's time to look at a new month of movies. From a 3D version of 'Titanic' to 'American Reunion,' the month has quite a variety to choose from.

It’s hard to argue that March 2012 belonged to any movie other than The Hunger Games. March had its share of disappointments and successes but The Hunger Games really won the month, both critically and commercially. Breaking box office records, it could be one of the biggest movies of the year. April 2012 looks a little different: There are fewer blockbusters coming out – unless you count a 3D version of Titanic – but more smaller films that could surprise audiences and critics alike.

As we did in March, we’ve compiled a list of the biggest movies we’re looking forward to this month. There weren’t 10 movies that really stood out to us so we cut it down to “9 Movies We’re Looking Forward ...

Click to continue reading 9 Movies We’re Looking Forward To: April 2012

Moviegoers in the mood for some strikingly different yet undeniably “adults only” pieces of entertainment might want to keep two upcoming titles on their radar: Project X, a faux documentary flick produced by Todd Phillips (The Hangover) and The Raven, a Gothic period thriller directed by James McTeigue (V for Vendetta, Ninja Assassin).

Today we have a new red band TV trailer for Project X which teases the film’s no-holds-barred mix of teen sex jokes and drug-fueled debauchery, along with an all-audiences-approved TV spot for The Raven which only hints at the gory violence and disturbingly gruesome acts committed by the movie’s mysterious villain.

Project X revolves around Thomas (Thomas Mann), Costa (Oliver Cooper) and JB (Jonathan Daniel Brown), a trio of high school seniors who throw a birthday party as an excuse ...

Click to continue reading ‘Project X’ Red Band TV Trailer & ‘The Raven’ TV Spot

James McTeigue spent over a decade working as an assistant director on Hollywood productions, including stylized sci-fi works such as Dark City and the Matrix trilogy. The latter proved to be all the more a blessing for McTeigue, seeing how his working relationship with the Wachowski siblings helped him land the job of directing the popular V for Vendetta comic book adaptation.

McTeigue has not fared so well since there, having served (uncredited) as a co-director of the little-seen The Invasion and helmed the underwhelming Ninja Assassin. Hopefully, things will work out better with his new project: the historical (fiction) murder-mystery, The Raven.

John Cusack headlines The Raven as famed author Edgar Allan Poe, who is often credited as the inventor of the detective fiction genre.
This past Friday marked the 162nd anniversary of the cryptic death of the master of the macabre, Edgar Allan Poe. It also marked the release of the latest trailer for The Raven, the thriller that imagines a world in which a brutal serial killer draws from a series of Poe’s stories to create a template for murder. (Be sure to have a look at The Raven trailer before continuing).

John Cusack stars as Poe against Luke Evans as a Baltimore detective who enlists the notorious author’s help on the hunt for the ruthless killer.
Today (October 7th) marks the “death day” of famed 19th century author Edgar Allan Poe. So what better way to celebrate the life of the man often credited for inventing the detective fiction genre – and penning famous (creepy) short stories like “The Pit and the Pendulum” – than by watching the trailer for the Poe-based thriller, The Raven?

An official trailer has been released for The Raven, a film which is not based on Poe’s iconic poem of the same name. Instead, it’s a Gothic mystery-thriller that sees the American author join forces with the police (Castle-style), in order to track down and stop a serial killer who’s clearly read one too many Poe stories.

Relativity Media, the distributor that brought moviegoers a slew of titles including Battle: Los Angeles and The Immortals is set to unveil two high-profile properties at Comic Con 2011: The Raven, starring John Cusask, and Haywire, featuring mixed martial artist, Gina Carano.

One way they build excitement for a film is by releasing still images, which usually consist of behind-the-scenes material, freeze frames from the movie (out of context of course) or occasionally a “cell phone reporter” will snap a picture or two while a film is shooting. Sometimes a studio will just take a Hi-Res still from the latest trailer and call it “new.”

In August, we reported that John Cusack had been cast as famed poet and author Edgar Allan Poe in James McTeigue’s upcoming film The Raven. According to McTeigue, the movie will be a cross between the suspense movie Se7en and Poe’s famous poem “The Raven” and will be a fictionalized account of Poe’s dying days.

The psychological thriller will follow Poe and a detective (played by Luke Evans) as they track down a serial killer inspired by the author’s work. The movie also stars Alice Eve as Poe’s kidnapped fiancee.

Here’s our weekend box office report and various movie news tidbits we may have missed during the week.

This week:

Jackass 3D hits the top spot at the box office while Bruce Willis sees Red; J.J. Abrams is Infinitely Polar Bear; Samuel L. Jackson heads Holmes with Hawkshaw; Joe Carnahan tackles Umbra; Catherine Hardwicke moves from Edward & Bella to Romeo & Juliet; Noomi Rapace sets sail on The Last Voyage of The Demeter; Luke Evans and Alice Eve join John Cusack in The Raven and there’s lots more.

After several weeks of serious adult-skewed films holding the top spot at the box office, it looked like audiences wanted to let loose and relax by watching grown men getting hit in the crotch with the full 3D experience. This thirst for pain is the reason that the number one position was filled by Jackass 3D (read our review here). The $20 million budgeted comedy brought in a stellar $49.5 million, easily capturing the number one spot.

It has taken a while, but director has James McTeigue has finally found a star for his Edgar Allan Poe mystery thriller The Raven. Actor John Cusack announced via his Twitter feed that he would be taking the lead role in the tale which tells a fictional account of the writer’s final five days.

Over the last several months Jeremy Renner and Ewan McGregor were attached to the project, but Cusack wrote a proclamation saying:

Question: What happens when you star in a bankable and critically-lauded foreign film that has spawned two sequels and an English-language remake?

Answer: You answer your phone and discover that Hollywood can’t wait to cast you in some of its biggest upcoming films.

Such is the case for Noomi Rapace, the star of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo (which is currently being remade by David Fincher). The Swedish actress has been in Hollywood recently, taking meetings on films such as Mission: Impossible 4, Sherlock Holmes 2 and James McTeigue’s The Raven. To cap it all off, it also seems that Music Box Films (the company behind Tattoo and its sequels) is gearing up a campaign to score Rapace an Oscar nomination.

While the roles in M:I4 and Sherlock Holmes 2 remain something of a mystery, ...

Click to continue reading ‘Dragon Tattoo’ Star Noomi Rapace Circling ‘M:I4′ & ‘Sherlock Holmes 2′

Jeremy Renner is quickly becoming the toast of the Hollywood scene thanks to his latest movie The Hurt Locker. Although he didn’t win the Best Actor Award at last night’s BAFTAs, The Hurt Locker did win quite a few awards, and Renner’s role as SSG William James, the adrenaline junkie that diffuses bombs in Iraq, has propelled him to the top of everyone’s short list.

Last December, Renner’s name was floating the movie news world as a possible candidate to play Hawkeye in the upcoming Avengers movie – a rumor that Renner was quick to shoot down. So while he may or may not be in a Marvel film of some sort, one thing is for sure – Renner has his pick of projects. According to a Reuters article over at the New York Times, Renner ...

Click to continue reading Jeremy Renner in Talks for ‘Battleship’, ‘Raven’ & Mystery Project

Since 2005′s V for Vendetta, director James McTeigue has emerged as one of Hollywood’s most in-demand directors. Besides recently completing filming on his amazing looking martial arts film Ninja Assassin, McTeigue has long been tied to rumors about the upcoming Superman reboot and was even in consideration for the Conan remake (before eventually losing out to Marcus Nispel). Recently, Peter Sciretta from /Film had the chance to sit down with McTeigue to talk about some of his future projects.

According to /Film’s interview, McTeigue’s next project will be The Raven, a suspense tale based partly on Edgar Allan Poe’s famous poem of the same name. Described by McTeigue as “The Raven crossed with Se7en,” the film is a fictionalized account of Edgar Allan Poe’s last days alive. Apparently, we’ll get to see ...

Click to continue reading James McTeigue Talks ‘The Raven’ & Other Projects
