Both DC Comics and Marvel would have you think that big-budget, blockbuster films like Superman, Spider-Man, Batman, X-Men, Green Lantern and The Avengers are their only attempts to bring popular comic book characters into the live-action arena. They would like everyone to forget the sometimes absurd, ridiculous and often ugly reality: that there were numerous early – and failed – attempts to bring super heroes to both the big and small screens.

Over the next few pages you can read about these early superhero attempts and the actors who portrayed them on-screen. Some you may be familiar with, but we’ll bet you’ve never heard of many of them.

NOTE: This list doesn’t cover every instance of every superhero who has ever appeared on TV or ...

Click to continue reading Before They Were Movies: Early Attempts to Bring Superheroes to Life Onscreen

In the nearly 40 years of his existence, The Punisher has been many things: villain, hero, homicidal maniac and even avenging angel – but the one thing the beloved character has never been is successful in the world of film. So, naturally, Marvel has decided to eschew another film appearance (for the time being) in favor of a television series on FOX.

FOX recently picked up The Punisher with a pilot commitment from former Criminal Minds showrunner Ed Bernero. The series is seen as an hour-long procedural with – wait for it…a new take on the character! That’s right, arguably the most cut-and-dry character in Marvel’s pantheon of heroes is yet again the recipient of what could be a make over that misses the mark.

Fanboys have a lot of opinions to share when it comes to comic book/superhero movies - but should Hollywood be listening?

As any member of the Screen Rant team can tell you, comic book movies are a volatile topic. For every new post we do about upcoming super hero films like The Amazing Spider-Man, X-Men: First Class, Ant-Man, The Punisher, The Dark Knight Rises, Superman: Man of Steel, Green Lantern, Thor, Captain America, or The Avengers – no matter if it’s news, images, posters, or trailers – we often get a plethora of impassioned (or downright hostile) responses from the fanboy/fangirl community, which is o so protective of the superhero creations they worship.

After years spent engaging the opinions of fanboys and fangirls all over the world, there’s one conclusion that I (and many among the Screen Rant staff) have come to: fanboy enthusiasm and ...

Click to continue reading Should Hollywood Listen to Fanboys About Comic Book Movies?

Now that Marvel has reacquired the rights to 'The Punisher', there's a strong chance that Ray Stevenson could reprise the role of Frank Castle - if the studio decides to make another film.

Poor Frank Castle. Hollywood hasn’t had much luck when it comes to translating Marvel’s iconic antihero The Punisher to the big screen. The 1989 version that starred Dolph Lundgren borrowed the name and not much else. The 2004 adaptation featuring Thomas Jane also made a few bizarre deviations from the source material – including the story’s setting and characterization of Castle.

The 2008 film Punisher: War Zone came the closest to nailing the spirit of the comics (particularly the popular PunisherMAX series), but even that film wound up falling short of expectations. On the surface, it might appear that The Punisher is a property that just doesn’t work as a feature film – but fans know the real issue is that there has yet to be an accurate depiction of the mythology.

Despite its ...

Click to continue reading Ray Stevenson Could Play The Punisher Again

After the epic and long-awaited debut of the first official Thor trailer Friday evening, Marvel Studios President of Production, Kevin Feige, participated in a live chat on the LA Times Hero Complex blog to answer fan questions. As you can imagine, Feige touched on what we can expect from The Avengers and what other Marvel projects are in the pipelines.

Some of the important highlights include Ant-Man moving forward and emphasis that Punisher, Iron Fist and Black Panther projects are heading in the right direction.

Not to be upstaged by DC Comics and their recent announcement of a new Wonder Woman show, Marvel has revealed plans to team up with ABC for a new series based on The Incredible Hulk.

Marvel’s television department has been operating in near secrecy since Jeph Loeb took over this past June and The Incredible Hulk quickly became one of their high-priority projects. They presented the idea to Disney along with a list of other properties they had designated as potential television shows.

According to THR, The Incredible Hulk and Cloak & Dagger were selected from that list and both are in the earliest stages of development.
Working in the TV/Movie blog business, there’s one undeniable law you come to accept: Geeks are an obsessive bunch. No matter our own individual degrees of geekdom, at a certain point we’ve all stopped to stare at that other person who was WAY too into something – be it Star Trek or Star Wars or even that sports fanatic whose blood pressure is one scoreboard point away from going critical.

We all know about geek obsession – but what about geek denial? It’s not a topic you hear brought up very often, but geeks have powers of denial just as strong as their obsessive tendencies. And to prove this fact, we here at Screen Rant are prepared to delve into the deep, dark, realm of “Movies and TV Shows That Geeks Pretend ...

Click to continue reading Movies & TV Shows Geeks Pretend Don’t Exist

Screen Rant presents 30 minimalist superhero posters ranging from Batman, Superman & Iron Man to off-beat heroes like Gizmo Duck, Darkwing Duck & more.

We here at Screen Rant wanted to celebrate the upcoming summer movie season – particularly the release of Iron Man 2 – by taking an unconventional look at some of the most iconic superheroes in the entertainment industry.

Over the past few months, you may have caught some of our “SR Picks” which highlighted various artists’ interpretations of Quentin Tarantino films, Star Wars and popular television series. Today, we’re stepping out from solely presenting these wonderful posters and taking the initiative to create some of our own.

If, for some reason, you’re not a ...

Click to continue reading 30 Awesome Minimalist Superhero Posters

We've gone through the history of superheroes on both the big screen & TV to compile for you the best & worst costume translations from comic book to live action.

If you want to be a superhero, then you have to dress like one – and to do that you’ll need the absolute necessities: Mask, cowl, cape, utility belt and a weapon and/or superpower. The everyday kid turned hero vigilante Kick-Ass knew this when he bought a neoprene bodysuit with yellow piping, a matching mask and two batons for weapons. It looks great on the page and the design team for the movie replicated it perfectly but… it doesn’t always work out that way.

Not every superhero outfit drawn in the pages of a comic book looks great on screen. Some can be replicated exactly from printed page to movie or TV set and look great with not a hint of cheese to be found. Others, not so lucky.

Should costume designers take extra liberty when replicating a superhero’s outfit, as they did with Elektra? She would have ...

Click to continue reading From Page to Screen: The 6 Best & Worst Superhero Costumes

Thomas Jane (Hung) doesn’t think that The Punisher has gotten his due on the big screen. After portraying Frank Castle in the 2004 big screen adaptation of the Marvel character, Jane (something of a fan favorite) dropped out amidst much controversy of the 2008 (reboot? Sequel? Flop?), Punisher: War Zone.

While talking exclusively to MTV recently about his new movie, Dark Country, Thomas Jane addressed the subject of both Punisher films, what makes the character great, and what kind of film it would take for him to reprise the role of a character he seems to very much know and love almost as much. Here are some exerts from what Jane had to say about The Punisher:

“My interest has always been based more in reality than in superhero fiction…The strengths of ‘The Punisher’ that I did lie ...

Click to continue reading Thomas Jane Talks Perfect Punisher Movie
