Synopsis

A series starring Frank Castle/The Punisher, who first appeared on Netflix’s Daredevil. An in-depth look at Frank Castle’s (Jon Bernthal) past that led him to become The Punisher will be featured in the upcoming Marvel Netflix series. Frank was first introduced as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the second season of Daredevil, where he also met Karen Page (Deborah Ann Woll). Karen will also be returning in The Punisher.

The upcoming television series is created by Steve Lightfoot but the character who first appeared in the comic The Amazing Spider-Man #129 was created by writer Gerry Conway and artists John Romita Sr. and Ross Andru. The character, originally called Assassin by Conway, was meant to be a villain, but turned into an anti-hero. Stan Lee, the publisher, thought that the name had many negative connotations and suggested “The Punisher” instead. The said comic edition was published in 1974.

Frank is a United States Marine Corps Scout Sniper veteran who is highly skilled in martial arts, stealth tactics, guerrilla warfare, and knows how to use a variety of weapons. The death of his wife and two children led him to take matters into his own hands and has been killing criminals indiscriminately ever since.

Although it is a spinoff series from Daredevil, development of The Punisher began even before the second season of the said show was aired. Filming for the series began in October 2016 and ended in April 2017.

Other cast members of the show include Jason R. Moore (Curtis Hoyle), Ebon Moss-Bachrach (David Lieberman), Michael Nathanson (Sam Stein), Jaime Ray Newman (Sarah Lieberman), Amber Rose Revah (Dinah Madani), Paul Schulze (Rawlins), Daniel Webber (Lewis Walcott), Kobi Frumer (Zach Lieberman), Ripley Sobo (Leo Lieberman) and Kelli Barrett (Maria Castle).

The character has been adapted in movies before with actor Dolph Lundgren playing the role in 1989, actor Thomas Jane in 2004 and Ray Stevenson in 2008. The trailer of the series has been shown in the recently released TV series, The Defenders. No official release date has been announced yet as of this writing but it is believed to happen in late 2017.
