As the days become shorter, and the nights become cooler, there is one thing on the horizon that all of us are quickly becoming aware of – the arrival of a slew of exciting 2009 Fall Movies. What’s always been great about this time of year is that it’s not just about “horror films” or movies that are made to touch the holiday hearts that burgeon each year as turkey, Santa and New Year’s Eve stretch into the new year and beyond.

The menu is varied, wide open and we hope – satisfying. While we couldn’t list them all, please join us as we quickly chronicle what lies ahead in Screen Rant’s 2009 Fall Movie Preview!

Whiteout
September 11th, 2009
The Scoop: Pretty little starlet Kate Beckinsale takes on this graphic novel turned killer-thriller. Beckinsale plays a U.S. Marshall investigating Antarctica’s first homicide as the sun sets for six entire months. Will she find the killer in the cold dark before he finds her?

SR Says: The trailer paints this movie as more X-Files than detective story, which could confuse some on the premise. However, cold weather and hot Beckinsale = worth the ticket price?

See it? Maybe.

.

The Informant!
September 18, 2009
The Scoop: Director Steven Soderbergh helms an all-star cast providing you “a mix of A Beautiful Mind and The Insider.” Damon plays the exec of a agri-business giant who goes overboard working as a snitch for the Feds. It’s bi-polar, whistle-blowing storytelling at it’s best!

SR Says: It’s going to be amazing to see what this cast can pull off under Soderbergh’s direction with such an involved script.

See it? Yes.

.

Jennifer’s Body
September 18, 2009
The Scoop: Megan Fox plays a possessed cheerleader, with a fetish for feasting on boys (and girls). Hot sexy teens, girl on girl kissing/rubbing and more social satire from Juno writer Diablo Cody.

SR Says: Depends on how you feel about Megan Fox looking both sexy and grotesque in one film.

See it? If you like teen horror flicks, or are a devotee of Cody.

.

Pandorum
September 25, 2009
The Scoop: Ben Foster and Dennis Quaid star as two astronauts who wake up on an abandoned future spacecraft and have no idea what’s happened. As with all things in movies, time unveils the “truth” of what they face – a ship full of crazy space monsters.

SR Says: Dennis Quaid has had some woofers lately, but Ben Foster always offers something unique. MMA fans may recognize cast member Cung Le as the current Strikeforce Middleweight Champion, which guarantees at least two raucous fights in this thriller.

See it? Yes.

.

Surrogates
September 25th, 2009
The Scoop: In a future where people live life through robotic surrogates, Bruce Willis plays a cop who must venture back into the real world to investigate a string of crimes involving people dying while connected to their Surrogates.

SR Says: Jonathan Mostow is an underrated director, and seeing Bruce “alive” again, with great f/x and a bit of gravitas sounds like a great combination.

See it? Absolutely.

Peter Jackson is a busy man lately. In addition to appearing at Comic-Con for the first time ever to promote District 9 (the sci-fi film he produced which premieres this Friday), Jackson has been ramping up promotions for his own film, an adaptation of the Alice Sebold’s novel The Lovely Bones.

Last week, Screen Rant shared the first official trailer for The Lovely Bones, which, while a bit heavy on spoilers, showed enough potential to merit some early Academy Award chatter. Now, we have even more footage of The Lovely Bones thanks to a behind the scenes featurette from Yahoo.

In the featurette, Jackson discusses his attraction to the source material, his vision for the film, and casting Saoirse Ronan as the lead character. It also features interviews with some of the film’s cast, including Mark Wahlberg, Rachel Weisz, and Stanley Tucci. Check out the featurette below. For an HD version, head over to Yahoo.

Peter Jackson is a fantastic director and I’m confident that The Lovely Bones will be an excellent addition to his already strong resume. While many fanboys are only familiar with Jackson’s major F/X-driven work on such films as Lord of the Rings and King Kong, the director has proven himself just as capable with smaller and more nuanced dramas. In fact, The Lovely Bones probably shares more in common with Jackson’s breakout film, Heavenly Creatures, which is based on the true story of an infamous New Zealand murder case from the 1950s.

What do you think? Does this behind the scenes look coupled with the first trailer make you excited for the movie? Is it too premature for award buzz?

The Lovely Bones will hit theaters on December 11, 2009.

The first trailer for Peter Jackson’s adaptation of Alice Sebold’s bestselling novel The Lovely Bones has officially hit the net and (visually speaking) it looks as if Jackson is once again bringing us something special.

Before you watch the trailer though, I must warn you: it does reveal elements of the film that could be considered SPOILERS for those “purists” out there who don’t like to know too much too soon.

Now that you’ve been fairly warned, continue on to see the trailer.

For those unfamiliar with Sebold’s novel, here is a quick synopsis of The Lovely Bones [SPOILER ALERT!]:

The Lovely Bones is the story of a 14-year-old girl from suburban Pennsylvania who is murdered by her neighbor. She tells the story from Heaven, showing the lives of the people around her and how they have changed all while attempting to get someone to find her lost body.

So okay, obviously the “whodunit?” aspect of this movie is not meant to be a mystery. And if you’ve read the book, you know that the “who” is not so important as the “why” and the ramifications of what happens in wake of a brutal, violent and tragic occurrence.

But still, movie fans are a fickle bunch and I’m not trying to take any flack for SPOILING things for people, so if you don’t want to know who the murderer is until five minutes after the movie has started, then don’t watch this trailer. For the rest you, here is your first look at The Lovely Bones:

The film stars Mark Wahlberg, Rachel Weisz, Susan Sarandon, Stanley Tucci, Michael Imperioli and Saoirse Ronan (the fantastic young actress from Atonement) as the lead character/dead girl narrator, Susie Salmon.

Visually, this film looks like Jackson’s most accomplished work to date – even better in some ways than Lord of The Rings. Susie’s “personal heaven” looks fantastic to behold and I can’t wait to see Jackson’s full interpretation of the semi-afterlife, dubbed here as “the in-between.”

However, is the film Academy Award material like some are already claiming? For my part I’ll have to wait and see the finished product.

The Lovely Bones is slated to hit theaters on December 11, 2009. Let us know what you thought about the trailer.

You can now add Peter Jackson to the 3D bandwagon. In talking with MarketSaw, 3ality Digital Systems CEO Steve Schklair said that Jackson will be shooting all of his (directed) films in 3D from now on, using the technologies of Schklair’s 3ality company to do so.

Schklair said the following about the Lord of the Rings director with regards to 3D:

“..We were recently down in New Zealand with Peter Jackson, who is committing to shooting his films in 3D, and will be working with our rigs and technology to do so.”

Schklair went on to say that he thinks Jackson’s decision to shoot his movies in 3D will be a big boost for the advancement of 3D technology as a prominent way of viewing movies:

“I think this is big news for the industry because we are all pushing to get theaters built. Some theater owners are on the fence, asking, ‘If we do jump [into 3D], is there enough content?’ And having guys like Peter Jackson jump in and say things like “I’ll be making all my movies in 3D” is a great vote of confidence for the theater owners who are thinking about making the investment.”

As Alex Billington over at First Showing points out, there is currently a predicament with 3D movies in that a lot of movie theaters don’t want to convert to 3D because there simply aren’t enough 3D movies out there yet. And at the same time a lot of directors don’t want to shoot movies in 3D because there aren’t enough movie theaters properly equipped yet. But with Jackson joining James Cameron (and others) on the list of people shooting in 3D, it seems that will become much less of a problem sooner rather than later.

I’ve made it no secret that I think for the most part 3D is a gimmick and the novelty of wears off very quickly. Only in movies where the technology is applied subtly and in the right places (such as in Pixar’s latest film Up) does it work. But most 3D movies just use the technology very blatantly, shoving images down the audience’s collective throat more frequently than you can count as they appear to come out of the screen towards them. If Jackson is going to use 3D in all of his movies, I really hope he applies it with great precision and doesn’t just use it all the time just for the sake of it.

Jackson currently has his drama/horror/thriller The Lovely Bones lined up as director, but I wouldn’t hold my breath to see it in 3D (not least because it’s already in post-production). But beyond that Jackson has the sequel to Tintin (if it gets greenlit), so unless anything else gets announced (he’s producing The Hobbit, not directing it), Tintin 2 will be his first 3D movie. And going by this news, it certainly wouldn’t be his last.

What do you think about Peter Jackson apparently going to be filming all of his movies in 3D? Do you think the technology is a gimmick or an effective way of watching movies?

1. Will Ferrell and Mark “Marky Mark” Wahlberg are due to team up in The B Team. No, I’m serious.

According to Variety the film is

“An Adam McKay-directed action comedy that casts Ferrell and Wahlberg as cops, with Chris Henchy writing the script.”

Can Wahlberg do comedy? I’m sure that we’ll find out soon enough.

I’d also expect a title change before the lawyers at Fox get over excited

Source: Variety

2. The final Harry Potter film has a release date:

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows: Part II will open on July 15, 2011.

Mark that date in your diary. Man, that’ll be ten years of Harry Potter. Did anyone else think that the franchise would have run out of steam long ago?

Source: Hollywood Reporter

3. Hollywood loves Dick. Phillip K. Dick that is.

Matt Damon is attached to George Nolfi’s adaption of Dick’s The Adjustment Bureau.

Apparently Nolfi will make his directing debut with the film that is due to go into production this summer.

Nolfi previously wrote Damon’s Ocean’s Eleven, while Dick is the mastermind behind some of the greatest Sci-Fi films (and stories) including Blade Runner.

Source: Variety

4. When Catherine Hardwicke departed the Twilight franchise it looked like her relationship with Summit Entertainment had soured. It would appear that the pair are at the…ahem… peak of their creativity. Hardwicke and Summit plan to bring another young-adult novel called If I Stay to the big screen.

According to EW:

“The project centers on 17-year old musician Mia who, after a violent car accident, finds herself watching her damaged body taken from the wreck. She must decide whether or not she has the will to live.”

Sounds like a teenage version of The Lovely Bones.

I’m sure it’ll make a pile of money. None of it will be mine.

Source: EW

5. We mentioned it before, but now Cate Blanchette is in final neogtiations to star in Ridley Scott’s Robin Hood / Nottingham opposite Russell Crowe. Not to be confused with Frost / Nixon.

Blanchett would of course play Maid Marian. The budget of the film is in the region of $130 million and it’s due to start shooting (arrows) in April.

Source: The Hollywood Reporter

That’s it for now. See you at the movies.

The head of the studio Bob Shaye refused, so Jackson filed a lawsuit to have the books opened to see if profits were hidden, after the studio refused to do so.

Shaye, whose New Line, by the way, is owned by Time Warner, then went on a public tirade against the man who made more money for Shaye’s company than Freddy Krueger.

When that happened, Jackson wished everyone the best on The Hobbit film and potential second Lord of the Rings prequel.

So when Jackson started shopping his The Lovely Bones project around, New Line was left out of the bidding. Bets were abound that Shaye would be fired from the company he founded.

Now, word has hit that New Line may be finally trying to make amends with Jackson as The Hobbit starts to get off the ground.

Ain’t It Cool News has this quote from Shaye: “Notwithstanding our personal quarrels, I really respect and admire Peter and would love for him to be creatively involved in some way in The Hobbit.”

Wow, okay, so it’s a semi-apology. Also, Deadline Hollywood has been on the Shaye story for a while, and is reporting that after publicly chastising director Brett Ratner for the over-budgeted Rush Hour 3, he’s now saying he’ll make some changes to how New Line will be run.

So if Shaye, and apparently New Line even more so, are both trying to make amends with Jackson, will we at least see some involvement with the film? I don’t know; I’d be pretty upset, too, if I asked for the books to be opened on LOTR, but New Line refused, so a lawsuit was filed to audit.

Keep in mind, on the film Coming To America, an audit discovered Paramount had hidden millions in profit owed to star Eddie Murphy, so I don’t blame Jackson. For now, I’m eagerly anticipating his The Lovely Bones adaptation and his eventual Tin Tin movie!

Saoirse Ronan has been cast as Susie Salmon in Peter Jackson’s The Lovely Bones, an adaptation of a best-selling novel by Alice Sebold.

She joins Rachel Weisz and Ryan Gosling, who play her parents, in a film about a brutally murdered girl who watches events unfold from heaven. I’m hoping this is a return to PJ’s Heavenly Creatures, which if you haven’t seen it, run out and grab it. I believe it was that film, plus his FX work on The Frighteners and other films, that led him to working on The Lord of the Rings trilogy.

I know, I know, we wish it were The Hobbit films (yes, there will be two, or at least some sort of other LOTR prequel), but to be honest, I want to see something a little more simple. I’m going to check out the book, which sounds dark, but intriguing!

Dreamworks is producing with Paramount set to distribute from a script by PJ, Philippa Boyens and Fran Walsh. What’s interesting was how the deal was made; a short time ago, PJ put the script and deal out to the studios with his directing attachment (except New Line Cinema, where the studio chief and PJ are having a battle) and DreamWorks bit. Production starts this October for a 2008 release, and I’ll bet this is going to be an Oscar contender!

Stay tuned for more details!
