The nominations have been announced for the 2010 Scream Awards which celebrates the more fan-friendly type of movies and TV shows than the Oscars and the Emmys.

We’re now into awards season once more (time flies, doesn’t it?), with the Emmys having come and gone already. Now we have the annual 2010 Scream Awards which celebrates the more fan-friendly type of movies and TV shows that the Oscars and the Emmys might not honor. And the great thing is YOU get to vote for the winners!

Last year they honored such fan-favorites as Star Trek, Watchmen and Fringe with nominations, which I’m sure pleased many of you. Even if they still nominate some questionable movies, there’s no doubting that for the most part, the Scream Awards are a lot more in line with the majority of the movie going audience who pay to see movies purely to be entertained.

Even if the Scream Awards tend to honor the “right” movies however, this year’s ...

Click to continue reading 2010 Scream Award Nominations

Serial killers have been explored in movies for decades, but which of them are the most memorably chilling? Take a look at our top 10 list to find out.

The serial killer has been a focus of film for decades now. Most of the time the movies are about good guys trying to track down a murderer that keeps on producing bodies all over the city, either purposely leaving clues or making mistakes that almost always leads to him being caught by the film’s end.

But what makes these serial killers tick? What makes them do the things they do? Is it pleasure? Revenge? Or simply the need to kill? We here at Screen Rant thought it would be interesting to take a look back at all the most chilling serial killers in movie history, exploring such things as why they resort to such heinous and horrific acts, how they go about it and generally what makes them so lasting in our memories.

It's time of the year again. Clear your schedule and get your DVR primed because May is the month of TV show finale's. Check out all the dates and times inside.

It’s that time of the year when we must once again bid adieu, albeit temporarily (except for Lost, which is gone forever), to our favorite television shows. Over the next four weeks, over 60 shows will be on hiatus until this fall.

While that means your summer viewing schedule will be completely open, you better get your DVR’s ready, because the month of May is going test your television watching ability.

Luckily, Entertainment Weekly has helped put some order to all this television madness by putting together a comprehensive list of all the upcoming season/series finales.

Check out the list below to see when your favorite TV show finale airs. While you’re at it, you better check it twice because there are many overlapping finales. For instance, the two-hour series finale of Lost is on at the same time ...

Click to continue reading Complete Guide To 2010 TV Season/Series Finales

This week a handful of worthy purchases hit shelves. From Academy-Award winning performances to the highest grossing film of all time, there is something for everybody to enjoy.

This week is one of the most anticipated of the season for home video releases. Considering last week’s duds, this is a Tuesday you may want to sneak out of work early to pick up a DVD or two. Not only does the much-debated bare-bones Avatar Blu-ray release, but also three Academy-Award nominated films. On top of it all, one of Leonardo DiCaprio’s most powerful performances and one of Steven Spielberg’s more under-appreciated works also hit shelves.

It’s a good week to spend the money you’ve been saving amidst a few weeks of lackadaisical DVD/Blu-ray releases. Just watch your step, because the upcoming slate of home video releases are filled with worthy titles, including Saving Private Ryan, Fantasia and Doctor Zhivago making the move to Blu-ray.

Without further ado, let’s get into your upcoming movie store checkout list.
Time to roll out the red carpet, put on your best outfit and practice sitting in an auditorium for four hours just to find out that someone else won as tonight is the night that filmmakers and movie goers have been waiting for all year. It’s time for the Oscars!

Whether it’s soldiers disarming bombs in The Hurt Locker, an all out seafood war with Prawns in District 9 or even a couple of $500 million blue cats in Avatar; audiences around the world have been treated to a veritable treasure trove of motion picture excellence. While many believe they already know who’s going to win, don’t be too surprised if you see a couple unexpected winners here and there… especially with Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin taking over as hosts.

The nominations are out for the 36th Annual Saturn Awards and predictably movies like Avatar, Inglourious Basterds and The Hurt Locker lead the way. Read on to find out the full list

Today marks the day when the nominations for the 36th Annual Saturn Awards are given out. In case you’re not familiar with them, they are given out by The Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films (they also include TV shows and stage productions) so as a reader of Screen Rant I believe they’re right up your alley .

The awards will be given out on June 24th, so we have over four months to speculate and choose the nominees we’d give the award to. The categories range from the usual Best Film (separated into Fantasy, Horror, Science Fiction etc) to Best DVD release and Best DVD Special Edition.

Keeping in line with all of the rest of the major awards, films like Avatar, The Hurt Locker and Inglourious Basterds have ...

Click to continue reading Avatar Leads 2010 Saturn Awards Nominations

With the award season in full swing, we at Screen Rant figured that maybe we should be covering these prestigious events because who knows, Mariah Carey could get up and say something crazy at one of these things OR Mariah Carey could get up and say something crazy at two of these things.

In case of such events, the general consensus is that we need someone around to provide hilarious, informative and cute/endearing commentary as well as someone that you, the reader, can yell at when you don’t agree with something we say.

So, join us back here at 8PM (EST) and we’ll kick things off as the always wonderful Ricky Gervais hosts the 2010 Golden Globe Awards.

Today we have something a little special for you Screen Rant readers – a roundtable discussion with some of the best directors in the business, courtesy of The Hollywood Reporter. The roundtable features (ready for this?) James Cameron (Avatar), Quentin Tarantino (Inglourious Basterds), Peter Jackson (The Lovely Bones), Jason Reitman (Up in the Air), Kathryn Bigelow (The Hurt Locker) and Lee Daniels (Precious). All at the same table!

The discussion is broken into three videos; we’ve posted one here and you can head over to THR if you want to watch the rest (and why wouldn’t you?). The one we’ve chosen is Cameron, Jackson and Co. talking about what they feel is the toughest scene to shoot as a director. Answers range from the big cinematic stuff to the up-close-and-personal scenes. It’s pretty damn awesome ...

Click to continue reading Director’s Roundtable: Cameron, Tarantino, Jackson & More!

In the featurette, Jackson discusses his attraction to the source material, his vision for the film, and casting Saoirse Ronan as the lead character. It also features interviews with some of the film’s ...

Click to continue reading Behind the Scenes Featurette of ‘The Lovely Bones’

The first trailer for Peter Jackson’s adaptation of Alice Sebold’s bestselling novel The Lovely Bones has officially hit the net and (visually speaking) it looks as if Jackson is once again bringing us something special.

Before you watch the trailer though, I must warn you: it does reveal elements of the film that could be considered SPOILERS for those “purists” out there who don’t like to know too much too soon.

Now that you’ve been fairly warned, continue on to see the trailer.

For those unfamiliar with Sebold’s novel, here is a quick synopsis of The Lovely Bones [SPOILER ALERT!]:

You can now add Peter Jackson to the 3D bandwagon. In talking with MarketSaw, 3ality Digital Systems CEO Steve Schklair said that Jackson will be shooting all of his (directed) films in 3D from now on, using the technologies of Schklair’s 3ality company to do so.

Schklair said the following about the Lord of the Rings director with regards to 3D:

“..We were recently down in New Zealand with Peter Jackson, who is committing to shooting his films in 3D, and will be working with our rigs and technology to do so.”

Schklair went on to say that he thinks Jackson’s decision to shoot his movies in 3D will be a big boost for the advancement of 3D technology as a prominent way of viewing movies:

“I think this is big news for the industry because we are all pushing to get ...

Click to continue reading Peter Jackson To Shoot Films In 3D From Now On

This week:

Ferrell and Wahlberg are The B Team; make a date with Harry Potter; Matt Damon makes an Adjustment; Twilight’s Hardwicke decides to Stay and Blanchett hangs in the Hood.

1. Will Ferrell and Mark “Marky Mark” Wahlberg are due to team up in The B Team. No, I’m serious.

According to Variety the film is

“An Adam McKay-directed action comedy that casts Ferrell and Wahlberg as cops, with Chris Henchy writing the script.”

Could be humorous, but it could be dire.

Can Wahlberg do comedy? I’m sure that we’ll find out soon enough.

I’d also expect a title change before the lawyers at Fox get over excited

Source: Variety

2. The final Harry Potter film has a release date:

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows: Part II will open on July 15, 2011.

Mark that date in your diary. Man, that’ll be ten years of Harry Potter. The head of the studio Bob Shaye refused, so Jackson filed a lawsuit to have the books opened to see if profits were hidden, after the studio refused to do so.

Shaye, whose New Line, by the way, is owned by Time Warner, then went on a public tirade against the man who made more money for Shaye’s company than Freddy Krueger.

When that happened, Jackson wished everyone the best on The Hobbit film and potential second Lord of the Rings prequel.

So when Jackson started shopping his The Lovely Bones project around, New Line was left out of the bidding. Bets were abound that Shaye would be fired from the company he founded.

Now, word has ...

Click to continue reading Studio Apologizing: Will Jackson Return To The Hobbit?

Saoirse Ronan has been cast as Susie Salmon in Peter Jackson’s The Lovely Bones, an adaptation of a best-selling novel by Alice Sebold.

She joins Rachel Weisz and Ryan Gosling, who play her parents, in a film about a brutally murdered girl who watches events unfold from heaven. I’m hoping this is a return to PJ’s Heavenly Creatures, which if you haven’t seen it, run out and grab it. I believe it was that film, plus his FX work on The Frighteners and other films, that led him to working on The Lord of the Rings trilogy.

I know, I know, we wish it were The Hobbit films (yes, there will be two, or at least some sort of other LOTR prequel), but to be honest, I want to see something a little more simple. ...

Click to continue reading THE LOVELY BONES’ cast materializes
