We’re now into awards season once more (time flies, doesn’t it?), with the Emmys having come and gone already. Now we have the annual 2010 Scream Awards which celebrates the more fan-friendly type of movies and TV shows that the Oscars and the Emmys might not honor. And the great thing is YOU get to vote for the winners!

Last year they honored such fan-favorites as Star Trek, Watchmen and Fringe with nominations, which I’m sure pleased many of you. Even if they still nominate some questionable movies, there’s no doubting that for the most part, the Scream Awards are a lot more in line with the majority of the movie going audience who pay to see movies purely to be entertained.

Even if the Scream Awards tend to honor the “right” movies however, this year’s ...

DVD/Blu-ray Breakdown: July 20, 2010

This week’s home video releases provide a short, but varied list of films. Unfortunately, there are no Blu-ray re-releases of interest, so the four new releases are all that we have to discuss today.

None of the new releases hit it big at the box office. But most are worthy rentals and possibly even blind buys. I wouldn’t go as far as to say they will be remembered for years to come, but each brings a unique quality to filmmaking and presents more than a generic brand.

The following movies can be found on DVD and Blu-ray this week.

Hold over hit How to Train Your Dragon flambéed the competition over the weekend. The animated tale banked $14.5 million on its fifth weekend. The DreamWorks ‘toon has now scored $177 million in total.

So for the PG-13 action crowd, The Losers is the film that is kicking off the pre-summer movie season. Yes, we had Kick-Ass, but its R-rated graphic violence and language kept a lot of people away. The question is, does this film do the job it sets out to do?

Kind of.

The Losers is based on a DC comic book series that I’ve never read, so I don’t know if it adheres closely to the source material or deviates a little or a lot. From everything I’ve seen in the trailers and clips, the film struck me as another riff on The A-Team (movie version opening this summer). Today we have a nice assortment of movie clips and images from four upcoming films, all of which look pretty good – Predators, Shrek Forever After, The Losers and Jonah Hex. We could have put all these items in their own separate posts, but honestly, it’s just so much easier for you to find them all in one place.

First up is a couple of featurettes from the third installment of the Predators franchise. If you count AvP and AvP: Requiem then technically it’s the fifth installment, but I still say it’s the third. The Predators teaser trailer played at SXSW earlier this year and the full trailer pretty much blew everyone’s anticipation levels off the charts.

Movie Media Roundup: Kick-Ass, ‘Losers’, ‘Last Airbender’

There’s no better way to start your week than checking out the latest trailers, clips, and images from three of this year’s most highly-anticipated action flicks: Kick-Ass, The Losers, and The Last Airbender.

First, we have a new, profanity-filled French trailer for Kick-Ass that showcases some more of the tongue-in-cheek gratuitous violence and humor the new comic book pic has in store for us when it hits theaters here in the U.S. this week.

The only downside to this French trailer? It’s pretty much the same as the second Kick-Ass red-band trailer which premiered in the U.S. a few weeks ago. Just have a look for yourselves:

‘The Losers’ Talk Robotech, Blue Tights & R-Ratings

At Wonder Con, we were treated to a high-octane trailer for director Sylvain White’s adaptation of The Losers. Afterward, this Screen Ranter got to sit down and chat with the Losers themselves about the film, the Con experience, and other movies they have in the works (Robotech? Captain America? Geek out). You’ll be able to tell which questions are the ones I asked, because they are extremely nerdy.

As cast members Columbus Short (Death at a Funeral), Chris Evans (Scott Pilgrim), Oscar Jaenada (Trash), Zoe Saldana (Star Trek), Jeffrey Dean Morgan (Watchmen, ) and director Sylvain White (Stomp the Yard) filed into the press room, the journalists were told in no uncertain terms by Ms. Saldana, “‘We were sweating Oscar all summer, you guys.”

We only have two more weeks before the comic book-turned-film, The Losers, hits hard into theaters. It was written by Peter Berg (Battleship) and James Vanderbilt (Spider-Man reboot) and based on the Vertigo/DC Comics graphic novel by Andy Diggle. Stomp the Yard director Peter Sylvain takes his shot at directing an action film, and if the trailer is any indication, then he may have found his niche.

A handful of new posters have released recently and for your enjoyment, we’re sharing them with you. The True Blood: Season 3 one is pretty darn cool, but this motion poster for The Other Guys is absolutely amazing. I’ve never laughed so hard at a poster, even if a moving one is kind of cheating. I am immediately much more interested in seeing it.

In yet another installment of our Screen Rant “Life Style of Convenience Initiative” today we offer you three new vidoes of three upcoming winter/spring movies.

On the menu for today’s video buffet are:

A new SFX featurette for the remake of George Romero’s The Crazies.
A new TV spot for the comic book movie The Losers.

Finally, someone in Hollywood decided to make a movie about me and my friends in high school and appropriately titled it The Losers. *Friend whispers in my ear* What? Hold on a sec everyone – it’s not? Are you sure because the title says… *friend nods head*…OK my bad.

I have been corrected. The new trailer for the action film The Losers apparently is NOT about me and my friends but rather revolves around a group of betrayed CIA black ops and their fight for survival. The movie is based on the DC/Vertigo graphic novel of the same name by Andy Diggle. The Losers screenplay was written by Peter Berg (Hancock) and is directed by Sylvain White (Stomp the Yard).

For some reason, this week has been filled with new photos from some highly anticipated movies: we’ve already had an amazing new Iron Man 2 image; our first image from Shrek Forever After; and a look at a toy figure of the new Freddy Krueger from the Nightmare on Elm Street remake.

To continue today’s trend, some new images have been released for two comic book adaptations, the dark Western, Jonah Hex, and the Special Forces team movie, The Losers. Both are definitely on my most anticipated list, so it’s nice to see some new pics from them – in fact, as far as we know they are the first official ones from each movie.

Zoe Saldana Talks Star Trek, Avatar & The Losers

Since her starring turn as Uhura in J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek reboot, the lovely Zoe Saldana has been racking up a number of major films. Besides the inevitable Star Trek sequel, Zaldana will play Aisha in the DC comic book adaptation The Losers, as well as the alien Neytiri in James Cameron’s epic sci-fi (or is it fantasy?) film Avatar. Recently, Coming Soon snagged an interview with the fast-rising actress at the DVD/Blu-ray release party for Star Trek.

In the interview, Saldana explains that, although her busy schedule has her worn out, she hasn’t lost her enthusiasm for any of her upcoming projects.

New Set Pic from ‘The Losers’

We shared the first images of the Warner Brothers’ film The Losers a little over a month ago. Now, thanks to the power of Twitter, we have a new image from the set of the film. Actor Idris Elba (The Wire) tweeted the picture, which features himself, Columbus Short, Chris Evans, Óscar Jaenada and Jeffrey Dean Morgan looking appropriately bad-ass as they wait on the film’s Puerto Rican set.

The Losers, which also features Star Trek‘s Zoe Saldana, revolves around an ex-CIA Black Ops team who seek revenge against the mysterious Max (played by Jason Patric), their former handler and the man who betrayed them. The film is based on the Eisner-nominated DC/Vertigo comic book series of the same name, which ran from 2003 to 2006.

DC Entertainment: What’s The Game Plan?

Yesterday we found out that Warner Bros. has created DC Entertainment Inc. (DCE) to better expand the DC Comics into a multimedia brand of steel . Now comes the inevitable question of “What’s the game plan?”

MTV Splash Page posted a nice piece declaring which DC properties should be put on fast-track under the DCE banner, and this being Friday and all, I thought I’d once again do a little call-and-response on the topic (I now consider Splash Page‘s Josh Wigler to be something of a pen-pal).

After the Disney/Marvel merger DC Comics and longtime-partner Warner Bros. had to be shaking in their boots. “The House of the Mouse” is already looking like a force that few will likely be able to reckon with.

Well, in an effort to become one of those few forces able to take on Disney/Marvel, Nikke Finke reports that Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc. has launched a new division, DC Entertainment Inc., in order to better expand the DC Brand.

Marvel fanboys have already been having heart palpitations wondering what the fate of their favorite characters will be in the hands of Disney. Now DC fans can officially share in that anxiety.

First Set Pics Of ‘The Losers’

The adaptation of the DC/Vertigo comic series, The Losers, started production over a week ago in Puerto Rico for release next Spring. Today we have our first real look at the movie through some pics from the set, showing off two of the film’s stars, Jeffrey Dean Morgan (Watchmen) and Idris Elba (The Wire).

The set pics show Morgan and Elba in the midst of filming an action scene in Hato Rey, Puerto Rico. There’s not much to go on beyond that, except maybe that we get to see what the two actors look like in character: Elba’s hair is different than it usually is, and clearly the two characters are strapped.
