ABC & Lionsgate Developing ‘The Lincoln Lawyer’ TV Show

One good turn deserves another. ABC’s newest project is The Lincoln Lawyer, a courtroom drama based on the 2011 movie and Michael Connelly series of novels. Lionsgate and Lakeshore, who produced the movie, will handle production duties for the as-yet-unordered pilot.

The film was based on Connelly’s book of the same name, which was only the first of four novels to feature the titular attorney Michael “Mickey” Haller. That’s a considerable chunk of existing IP, and Connely’s books have been bestsellers for decades, creating a built-in audience for the show. Connelly periodically appears as himself on ABC’s Castle, opposite a character that he almost certainly helped inspire.

DVD/Blu-ray Breakdown: July 12, 2011

Some great titles hit DVD and Blu-ray this week. Nearly every genre is accounted for, which should leave at least one solid pick to add to your collection.

Every once in a while, a studio releases one of their more popular films on home video later in the week. This week, Rango and Arthur both hit shelves on Friday. But the rest of the notable titles will release on Tuesday as usual, including The Lincoln Lawyer, Insidious, Entourage and Robot Chicken.

Two other intriguing films that few got the chance to see in theaters will also be available on both DVD and Blu-ray – Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives and Miral.

Weekend Movie News Wrap Up: April 10th, 2011

This week:

Movie fans gets Branded as Hop and Arthur top the box office; Anna Karenina turns into Atonement 2; Keanu Reeves is a Man of Tai Chi; Sofia Vergara is a Stooge and Wahlberg plays Bait and Switch.

Box Office

The original Arthur was caught between the moon and New York City, but the remake seems to be caught between Hop and Hanna.

You could say that Russell Brand is the real winner this weekend, considering that he has Hop at number one, and Arthur at two, however it looks like the British star may not get another chance to headline another live action film – at least not for a while due to Arthur’s lackluster debut. Hop brought in another $21.7 million for a $68.2 million total, while Arthur had a flaccid $12.6 million debut. It looks like the profit margin for Arthur may be on the rocks.

Weekend Movie News Wrap Up: April 3rd, 2011

Russell Brand and James Marsden Hop to the top of the box office; Time Bandits and The Long Good Friday go from Handmade to remade films; Justin Beiber and Ashton Kutcher ask What Would Kenny Do?; Antoine Fuqua dusts off the shoulder pads for Dynasty (well, sort of) ; a new writer takes a bite at Piranha 3DD and Keira Knightley makes friends with Steve Carell for The End of the World.

Box Office

Hop topped the box office after grossing an estimated $38 million this weekend. The CGI/live action hybrid featuring X-Men’s James Marsden and the voice of Russell Brand quietly surpassed studio expectations despite mediocre reviews. Personally, I’m not a fan of this genre and can’t fathom why anybody would be interested in making this, although I am fully aware that family films can make serious money at the box office – despite their (often) poor ...

Zack Snyder’s Sucker Punch received a… sucker punch on its release by Diary Of A Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules. The family film should out gross Snyder’s latest fantasy flick by about $5 million. The $19 million debut of Sucker Punch is in line with Warner Bros’ (lowered) expectations. The film received mixed reviews (read ours here) and it looks like it might not connect with an audience for the long haul. This weekend’s box office is Limitless; Samuel L. Limitless ended up being the winner at this weekend’s box office race, taking in an estimated $19 million from 2,756 theaters.

The Lincoln Lawyer started off for me on the right note. The opening credits started the film with some cool retro-sounding music and a definite early 70s vibe to the visuals, so it got some points from out out of the gate. The film wastes no time in introducing us to Matthew McConaughey as Mick Haller, a slick lawyer with more than a touch of con man who practices law out of an old Lincoln Continental and defends accused criminals who would otherwise be depending on a public defendant. Of course he doesn’t do this pro-bono, but instead makes some very good coin which usually comes from the ill-gotten gains of those he defends.

‘The Lincoln Lawyer’ Trailer: Matthew McConaughey is a Backseat Lawyer

Even if you read movie news regularly you may not have heard of The Lincoln Lawyer, an upcoming legal drama/thriller starring Matthew McConaughey. The film has flown under the radar for the most part, with our last report on it being way back in October 2009.

We reported then that Tommy Lee Jones was attached to direct and star in the film, but evidently that didn’t work out. He apparently left the project late last year over “creative differences on the script.”

Collider declared that Tommy Lee Jones is in talks to both direct and act in The Lincoln Lawyer, a film that already has McConaughey attached as the lead. I’m already seeing some nightmarish love-child of No Country for Old Men and Failure to Launch.

The Lincoln Lawyer is based on the eponymous 2005 bestselling novel by Michael Connelly and follows an attorney who runs his business out of his car (McConaughey) and through what’s sure to be a funny little twist of fate, ends up representing a well-known Hollywood playboy in a murder case that, for our lawyer, is the chance of a lifetime. Movie News Wrap Up: March 30, 2009

Monsters Vs Aliens tops the box office; the Coens remake John Wayne’s True Grit; Val Kilmer talks up a reteam with Robert Downey Jr; Matthew McConaughey is The Lincoln Lawyer; Tobey Maguire knows The Limit; Ben Affleck and Matt Damon hunt for Good Will after Bourne again and Affleck hits The Town.

Box Office

Monsters Vs Aliens was the big winner this weekend with a powerful gross of $58 million. It’s the best opening gross of a movie this year (beating Watchmen). Also, horror isn’t dead with The Haunting in Connecticut scaring up $23 million in ticket sales.

Nicolas Cage’s Knowing dropped a decent 40% with a weekend take of almost $15 million giving the action flick a total gross of $46 million – despite bad reviews.

I Love You, Man managed another $12,7 million, while the Julia Roberts- Clive Owen heist movie Duplicity banked another $7.5 million for a $25 ...
