This week:

Jackass 3D hits the top spot at the box office while Bruce Willis sees Red; J.J. Abrams is Infinitely Polar Bear; Samuel L. Jackson heads Holmes with Hawkshaw; Joe Carnahan tackles Umbra; Catherine Hardwicke moves from Edward & Bella to Romeo & Juliet; Noomi Rapace sets sail on The Last Voyage of The Demeter; Luke Evans and Alice Eve join John Cusack in The Raven and there’s lots more.

After several weeks of serious adult-skewed films holding the top spot at the box office, it looked like audiences wanted to let loose and relax by watching grown men getting hit in the crotch with the full 3D experience. This thirst for pain is the reason that the number one position was filled by Jackass 3D (read our review here). The $20 million budgeted comedy brought in a stellar $49.5 million, easily capturing the number one spot.

Girl With The Dragon Tattoo star Noomi Rapace talks to Hollywood about roles in Mission: Impossible 4, Sherlock Holmes 2 and a host of other big projects.

Question: What happens when you star in a bankable and critically-lauded foreign film that has spawned two sequels and an English-language remake?

Answer: You answer your phone and discover that Hollywood can’t wait to cast you in some of its biggest upcoming films.

Such is the case for Noomi Rapace, the star of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo (which is currently being remade by David Fincher). The Swedish actress has been in Hollywood recently, taking meetings on films such as Mission: Impossible 4, Sherlock Holmes 2 and James McTeigue’s The Raven. To cap it all off, it also seems that Music Box Films (the company behind Tattoo and its sequels) is gearing up a campaign to score Rapace an Oscar nomination.

While the roles in M:I4 and Sherlock Holmes 2 remain something of a mystery, it ...

Click to continue reading ‘Dragon Tattoo’ Star Noomi Rapace Circling ‘M:I4′ & ‘Sherlock Holmes 2′

This week:

Wolverine is Number 1! Keanu Reeves goes to Cartagena; Marcus Nispell captains The Last Voyage of Demeter; we learn about The Pale Horsemen; Jim Carrey likes The Beaver; Natalie Portman, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Rainn Wilson know Hesher and three more people jump into the Hot Tub Time Machine; And last but not least, The Road finally gets a new release date.

Box Office

Hugh Jackman proved that he’s still a draw as Wolverine as his X-Men franchise spin-off X-Men Origins: Wolverine clawed up somewhere in the region of $85-90 million over the weekend. The weekend take was pretty much in line with expectations, but the road ahead might be tricky as reviews weren’t particularly great so there might be a huge drop-off next weekend which is usual for this type of movie.

It looks like Jackman will be able to take Wolverine to Japan in the next installment of Wolverine and ...

Click to continue reading Weekend Movie News Wrap Up: May 3, 2009
