‘The Last Airbender: Legend of Korra’ Trailer: Meet the New Avatar

Fans have been anxiously awaiting for a return trip to the fantastical world of element benders and mystical white creatures in The Last Airbender: Legend of Korra, a spinoff TV animated series that picks up 70 years after the events of Nickelodeon’s original hit Last Airbender show and centers around the new Avatar: a spirited young woman from the Southern Water Tribe named Korra (voiced by Janet Varney).

Nickelodeon has begun airing a new TV promo for Legend of Korra which highlights the series’ virtually identical animation style as that featured in Avatar: The Last Airbender – and offers a better look at the new incarnation of the Avatar, who looks to be much more outspoken, rebellious, and reckless than Aang.

‘Legend of Korra’ Comic-Con Trailer: The Next Avatar

Nickelodeon’s upcoming spin-off animated series, The Last Airbender: Legend of Korra, is easily one of the most anticipated TV titles on the horizon. Attendees at the 2011 Comic-Con got an early look at the show, which was conceived by original Avatar: The Last Airbender creators Bryan Konietzk and Michael DiMartino.

The Comic-Con trailer for Legend of Korra has made its way online, and it (naturally) begs the question: How does this new series look to compare to the beloved original Last Airbender show?

In a few words, Legend of Korra aims to be a darker, more mature, and more technically-proficient journey into the Avatar world of element benders and fantastical creatures. That much was made clear back when the show was officially greenlit by Nickelodeon heads just over a year ago.

First Look At ‘The Last Airbender: Legend of Korra’

M. Night Shyamalan’s live-action adaptation of the popular cartoon Avatar: The Last Airbender (shortened to just The Last Airbender) was a box office success, but a critical bomb last year. Fans of the original TV show should be glad then to hear that the Last Airbender mythology will live on – not, per se, in the form of Last Airbender 2, but in the animated series The Last Airbender: Legend of Korra.

Original Last Airbender TV show creators Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzk revealed their plans to develop a spinoff series last summer, and now we got a first look at the show’s namesake – the new Avatar Korra.

The Last Airbender Leads 2011 Razzie Award ‘Winners’

It’s that time of year again, when the Oscars reward various filmmakers, films, and actors for their extraordinary cinematic work, and the Razzies punish various filmmakers, films, and actors for their especially horrendous cinematic work.

Last night, the 31st Annual Razzie Awards were held at Hollywood’s Barnsdall Gallery Theater. To no one’s surprise, M. Night Shyamalan’s The Last Airbender was the big “winner” (or maybe “loser” is more appropriate here) of the night, taking home the most Razzies. Alas, it wasn’t a clean sweep, as Sex and the City 2 took home several awards that Airbender was nominated for.

Nominees for the 31st Annual Razzie Awards have been announced and M. Night Shyamalan’s much-derided TV show adaptation, The Last Airbender, and The Twilight Saga: Eclipse are the leaders in the contest to be officially ordained the “best of the worst” in 2010.

2011 Razzies Shortlist: The Worst Films and Performances of 2010

As the ball dropped in Times Square and people everywhere sang inebriated versions of “Auld Lang Syne”, it marked the end of a lukewarm movie year. With 557 movies released in 2010, some of them were truly good and others were excruciatingly bad. People could argue all day about what makes a movie truly bad, but thankfully we have the 31^st annual Golden Raspberry Awards to help us sort the chaff from the wheat.

Although the official list of nominees won’t release until January 24^th, the L.A. Times Award Tracker blog has released the shortlist of nominees for the coveted “Razzie” or Golden Raspberry Award.

Another year of movies has come and gone – and everyone is producing lists of their best and worst movies of the year. We have already unveiled what we thought were the 10 worst movies of 2010 and the top 10 movie moments of 2010 but we thought we would also do a list highlighting which movies we found to be the most disappointing.

While 2010 brought us its fair share of thrills, excitement, drama and laughs in such films as Inception, Kick-Ass, Black Swan and Toy Story 3 (to name but a few) the year inevitably brought us its fair share of disappointment, too.

Did you regret spending money on an awful movie this year? Are you aching to share your thoughts on the head-shaking, face-slapping, run-for-the-door flops of 2010? This is your chance – but not until we give you our choices of the 10 worst movies of 2010.

The box office had its fair share of behemoths this year, but not all were well-received by fans and critics. Poor movies come in all different styles – some are filled with explosions and fancy CGI meant to distract you from the weak plot, while others beg for laughs with humorless jokes. Those two types of theatrical failures, and more, are accounted for in our list.

This week’s DVD and Blu-ray releases feature a few major titles. You may need to spend more than usual on each if you want to enhance your collection with some of the most recognizable names in movies.

The biggest offering this week marks the second home video release for Avatar – now with a handful of features. Another epic film comes out on Blu-ray this week: Metropolis enhanced to its finest quality yet on Blu-ray.

Interestingly, this week also features a handful of 3D home video releases. I’m not sure yet why so many are hitting shelves today, but if you actually purchased a 3D television, you can put it to good use. It’s not exactly a secret that the career of the once-great M. Night Shyamalan has taken a serious turn for the worse in the last few years, starting off with The Village in 2004, by way of Lady in the Water and The Happening, the latest destination on his trip down the ladder of acclaim was The Last Airbender, a film which some people argue is his worst yet.

However, even if the majority of critics and fans hated Shyamalan’s adaptation of the popular Avatar: The Last Airbender cartoon, there are still some out there who liked it, just as when a movie is almost universally loved there will be some out there who don’t like it.

One of the greatest cartoon television series of all times became what may be one of the most disappointing films of all time a few weeks ago. Yes, I’m referring to Avatar: The Last Airbender, re-dubbed The Last Airbender for the M. Night Shyamalan film adaptation.

The award-winning Nickelodeon television series ran for three full seasons, designed that way intentionally to tell the full story of the legend of Aang, a young Airbender and the last of his people who, with his friends, must journey through the Water, Earth and Fire nations to learn how to master all four elements and save the world from the tyranny of the Fire Nation.

Angelina Jolie’s Salt can’t beat Inception; Adam McKay goes from The Other Guys to The Boys; Joseph Gordon-Levitt is in a Rush; a pair of Schmucks take a Cruise of the Gods; Wahlberg has a lot Happening with The Raven, Five Bothers and The Brazilian Job; Steven Seagal delivers some Justice; and we see Brad Pitt play Moneyball.

Box Office

Christopher Nolan’s Inception remained the box office champion over the weekend. The Dark Knight director’s latest film should steal another $44 million worth of moviegoers’ cash by the time Monday morning rolls around.

Inception boggles the mind at number one while Nic Cage and Jerry Bruckheimer’s Apprentice has no magic; Sandra Vergara joins Fright Night; Christopher McQuarrie has only One Shot; Sam Raimi’s Oz The Great And Powerful has a start date; Warner Bros. start World War X; two TV stars play Moneyball and lots more.

Box Office

Anyone who didn’t think that Inception wouldn’t open at number one this weekend was very silly indeed. It wasn’t that the film wouldn’t open big, the question was “how big?” - $62 million is the answer. The Christopher Nolan directed film has won itself awesome reviews and strong word-of-mout, meaning that the film should have very impressive legs – if the average Joe isn’t put off by the complex plot. However, the marketing of “James Bond meets The Matrix” would imply that audiences will come.

Despicable Me was the box office champ over the weekend. The Steve Carell voiced 3D toon should gross an impressive $58 million by Monday morning. M. Night Shyamalan Ready for ‘Airbender 2′

While M. Night Shyamalan’s The Last Airbender may have been a critical disaster, the film has supplied Paramount with a decent box-office run, taking in over $79 million domestically, as it heads into its second weekend. While Shyamalan still has a way to go before he recoups the $150 million budget, it’s not hard to imagine the film turning a decent profit.

Of course, with that kind of box-office potential, it’s only a matter of time before Paramount starts talking about The Last Airbender sequel – poor critical reception didn’t stop the studio from making Transformers 3. Fortunately, or maybe unfortunately, Shyamalan has already mapped out two Airbender sequels.

It wasn’t surprising that the Twilight Saga: Eclipse er…. eclipsed every other film at the box office over the fourth of July weekend. The vampire film banked a mighty $161 million since it opened last week. With a budget of under $70 million this is yet another profitable film in Summit’s mighty franchise. The film has now grossed over $260 million worldwide – how much of this was due to Taylor Lautner’s six pack or Robert Pattinson’s hair? You tell me?

Will ‘The Last Airbender’ Be the Next ‘Transformers 2′?

Note: This is a speculative article, written BEFORE opening weekend box office numbers came in.

M. Night Shyamalan’s adaptation of The Last Airbender hits theaters this week and upon closer examination, I dare say that there’s a lot at stake in regards to how this film performs at the box office – and not just in regard to Shyamalan’s career as a filmmaker.

Early critical reaction is that The Last Airbender is THE big movie fiasco of 2010; however, if the film manages to connect with audiences this weekend, it would seem that we’ll have another Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen on our hands, and that would be a development that could steer Hollywood further down a path that many avid movie fans do not want to follow.

The path was set for writer/director M. Night Shyamalan to return to glory with his adaptation of the hit animated Nickeloden television series, The Last Airbender. The movie is meant to be the first of a potential trilogy of films about the fantasy epic, which mixed anime action with Eastern philosophy.

I’m very familiar with the Avatar: The Last Airbender cartoon series – and with M. Night doing something different by taking on a big-budget film that wasn’t based on one of his original ideas, I was very interested and hopeful that this could be the game-changer for his career (which has been on something of a downward spiral in recent years).

So much for that hope.
