The Irishman – a movie about a real-life mobster tale that stars Robet De Niro, Al Pacino and Joe Pesci – with Martin Scorsese calling the shots from the director’s chair – sounds almost too good to be true. De Niro was previously talking up the possibility that filming could begin this year, but Scorsese’s commitment to making The Wolf of Wall Street and Silence in the near future means there’s little chance of that.

However, that doesn’t mean the project is in serious danger of turning into another dream teamup that never came to fruition – according to De Niro, he and his fellow legendary Hollywood talents are all firmly committed to making the film.

Scorsese and De Niro Plan To Shoot ‘The Irishman’ Next Year

It has been 15 years since Robert De Niro last starred in a Martin Scorsese film. If all goes according to plan, that streak will end next year. The two hope to begin filming The Irishman in 2011.

Al Pacino and Joe Pesci were rumored to be involved, but beggars can’t be choosers and this quasi-confirmation from the director is enough to hold us down for a while. According to Collider, the announcement came at BAFTA’s Life in Pictures event. The film will bring back the De Niro of old as he portrays mob hitman Frank “The Irishman” Sheeran, who allegedly murdered Jimmy Hoffa.

Al Pacino & Joe Pesci Considering ‘The Irishman’

Famous Hollywood thespians Al Pacino and Joe Pesci are both looking into joining The Irishman, a potential two-film project that will mark the ninth collaboration between legendary actor-director duo Robert De Niro and Martin Scorsese.

Oscar-winner Steve Zaillian is scripting The Irishman, which is an adaptation of Charles Brandt’s novel I Heard You Paint Houses. The book chronicles the exploits of Mafia hit man Frank “The Irishman” Sheeran, a man who claims to have been responsible for the death of several famous mobsters.

The first Irishman movie would deal with the real-life narrative of the book in a straightforward manner, while the second pic will be a self-reflexive work – one De Niro previously compared to Federico Fellini films like 8 1/2 and La Dolce Vita ...

De Niro & Scorsese To Reunite For ‘The Irishman’

Long before Johnny Depp and Tim Burton began their long string of cinematic collaborations, there was another famous actor/director team whose work was generally held in high critical regard.

That duo — Oscar winners Robert De Niro and Martin Scorsese — have joined forces on eight films, including Mean Streets, Goodfellas, and Casino. They are now poised to work together for a ninth time, in what sounds like a fascinating project titled The Irishman.

You might recall that we reported back in February that De Niro and Scorses would re-team for a new mobster movie. Well, MTV interviewed De Niro this past week and got the following bit of information from him about said mobster film.

J.J Abrams’ Star Trek reboot’s Spock-tacular $76 million opening ensures that the franchise will live long and prosper. The opening (which includes $7 million from Thursday) took almost as much as most films in the long running series banked in their entire run- unadjusted of course. Look for the film to “engage” with non-Trek fans and expect a sequel to go into production at warp speed. Can (Khan) the film have legs in future weeks? Word of mouth will probably override the initial geek stereotype.
