With another holiday movie season upon us, we take a look at the best and worst films released during the Christmas movie season over the last ten years.

There are several calendar dates throughout the year where studios rush to release all their big tentpole films in an attempt to maximize on the number of people who will see them, and each date corresponds with a major U.S. holiday – Memorial Day, 4th of July, and Christmas.

Films released during Memorial Day and 4th of July usually open on the exact dates of those holidays, while films being released for the Christmas season begin showing up in theaters anywhere from ten to fifteen days before December 25th.

Some of these films are highly anticipated and draw in millions of viewers, generating obscenely large box office numbers (think Avatar), while other films only have moderate expectations. Then there are the failures – the films so bad, so ridiculously inept, that ...

Click to continue reading Best & Worst Christmas Movie Releases of the Past 10 Years

We’re now into awards season once more (time flies, doesn’t it?), with the Emmys having come and gone already. Now we have the annual 2010 Scream Awards which celebrates the more fan-friendly type of movies and TV shows that the Oscars and the Emmys might not honor. And the great thing is YOU get to vote for the winners!

Last year they honored such fan-favorites as Star Trek, Watchmen and Fringe with nominations, which I’m sure pleased many of you. Even if they still nominate some questionable movies, there’s no doubting that for the most part, the Scream Awards are a lot more in line with the majority of the movie going audience who pay to see movies purely to be entertained.

Even if the Scream Awards tend to honor the “right” movies however, this year’s ...

Click to continue reading 2010 Scream Award Nominations

This week in the Breakdown we’ve got a handful of greats coming to Blu-ray and a two quite different new releases. Heath Ledger’s final performance heads to the shelves and the middle-aged comedy It’s Complicated will hope for a continued success.

Next week should prove one of the more exciting of the year as Saving Private Ryan makes its way to Blu-ray, which is enough to rank it near the top for many waiting for Spielberg’s war classic on the format.

All releases this week come in DVD and Blu-ray so take your pick on what platform to enjoy your home entertainment.

The nominations are out for the 36th Annual Saturn Awards and predictably movies like Avatar, Inglourious Basterds and The Hurt Locker lead the way. Read on to find out the full list

Today marks the day when the nominations for the 36th Annual Saturn Awards are given out. In case you’re not familiar with them, they are given out by The Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films (they also include TV shows and stage productions) so as a reader of Screen Rant I believe they’re right up your alley .

The awards will be given out on June 24th, so we have over four months to speculate and choose the nominees we’d give the award to. The categories range from the usual Best Film (separated into Fantasy, Horror, Science Fiction etc) to Best DVD release and Best DVD Special Edition.

Keeping in line with all of the rest of the major awards, films like Avatar, The Hurt Locker and Inglourious Basterds have ...

Click to continue reading Avatar Leads 2010 Saturn Awards Nominations

Well it now looks like Gilliam is about to get Don Quixote back in the saddle (albeit without Johnny Depp), and it looks like acting legend Robert Duvall could be replacing original lead Jean Rochefort in the adaptation of Cervantes’ iconic tale.

It has been a long and winding road for Gilliam, who has been trying to get Quixote onto to the big screen for well over ten years. The original film fell apart due to Rochefort falling ill, but the film was plagued by all sorts of problems ranging from floods to financing difficulties. To find out more about Gilliam’s first crack at making The Man Who Killed Don Quixote, check out the fantastic documentary Lost In La Mancha.

Happy Friday everyone!

We missed last week due to the launch of our sister site, GameRant.com and the fact that there was quite a few less one-sheets than normal so instead, I’ve combined them all from the last two weeks into this edition of Poster Friday.

Screen Rant’s wall this week now includes new one-sheets for Avatar, Precious, Crazy on the Outside, Daybreakers, Lost, Salt, Alice in Wonderland, Crazy Heart, Kick-Ass, The Yellow Handkerchief, Caprica, All About Evil, The Wolfman, Ong Bak 3, The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus, From Paris with Love and Wonderful World.

In addition to that we have some neat stylistic posters for some popular television shows.

Screen Rant’s Ross Miller Reviews The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus

There are a handful of directors out there – including Quentin Tarantino, David Lynch and The Coen brothers – whose new films are always considered to be cinematic events. Amongst that list of directors (for me) is Terry Gilliam, who I think is one of the most imaginative and creative filmmakers out there when it comes to the ideas and subsequent visuals that come the wild imagination he possesses.

Even when he’s at his weakest, Gilliam always offers something worth watching in my books, whether it be ambitious sci-fi (Twelve Monkeys) or almost self-indulgent fantasy (Tideland). So does his ...

Click to continue reading The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus Review

Day Four marks the halfway point for Fantastic Fest, and I’ve already seen two of the best films of the festival so far. That really makes me wonder what they’re going to close things out with. There was Secret Screening #3 on Sunday, and it turned out to be Terry Gilliam’s The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, and not the Michael Jackson concert rehearsal footage film, This Is It, as everyone expected. Personally, I think we got a good deal. We were able to enjoy Gilliam and Michael Jackson in the same evening… due to the Michael Jackson Dance Party held at midnight.

With only two Secret Screenings left, speculation is running rampant about what they might be. I’ve heard everything from Kick-Ass to Sherlock Holmes to The Twilight Saga: New Moon. Okay, New Moon was tongue-in-cheek; Let’s hope they don’t ...

Click to continue reading Fantastic Fest: Day Four – Swedish Sci-Fi, Revenge, Truffles, and Terry Gilliam

Terry Gilliam’s (Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Brazil) The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, otherwise known to every inhabitant of Earth as the talented Heath Ledger’s final and unfinished film, has released some new, cool-looking shots. These include glimpses of each of Ledger’s famous stand-ins, Jude Law, Johnny Depp and Colin Farrell.

One can’t help but wonder why three actors were cast to replace one, which brings me to my explanation of the film. A traveling theater troupe holds in its possession a magical mirror that it allows paying customers to step through into a wooooooooorld of puuuuure i-ma-gin-aaation. Said mirror was provided by the devil (who else would just be giving something like that away?), who comes for the payment previously promised and hightails it into the mirror with the daughter of the head of the theater ...

Click to continue reading A Look At Depp, Law and Farrell In ‘Doctor Parnassus’

Aliens invade the box office with District 9; get ready to see more Saw; Elvis talks Bubba Nosferatu; St Elmo’s Fire gets remade; Dennis Quaid and Tim Allen join Ron Shelton in Q School, while Maggie Q looks for a Priest; Godzilla may be going on the warpath again; Sony takes a dose of Doctor Parnassus and Wall Street 2 adds another cast member.

Box Office

It looks like originality won out at the box office for a change. Neill Blomkamp’s District 9 banked a cool $37 million over the weekend. The Peter Jackson produced Sci-Fi film had a negative cost of just $30 million and with great reviews it looks like this could do well in the long run too.

A full trailer has recently appeared online for Terry Gilliam’s latest fantasy flick, The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus.
This afternoon at Comic-Con, Writer/Director Terry Gilliam introduced his latest creative endeavor: The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus.

Before Gilliam arrived on stage, however, a montage of his work was shown followed by what looked to be behind the scenes interviews destined for DVD special features. He was then quickly presented with the Comic-Con’s own Ink Pot award for achievement in Film arts.

After receiving the award, Gilliam pretended that he was leaving the stage, before quickly re-taking his seat to promote his film.

From Gilliam’s discussion, we learn more about the immortal Dr. Parnassus (Christopher Plummer) and how he’s trying to save his daughter (Lily Cole) from the Devil (Tom Waits), after he made a bet with the Devil a thousand years ...

Click to continue reading Comic-Con: Terry Gilliam’s The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus

The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, Terry Gilliam’s latest fantasy outing which sees the late Heath Ledger in his last ever role, is looking better and better every day. We’ve already posted some gorgeous images from the movie, as well as a minute-long clip featuring Ledger. The early reviews for Doctor Parnassus suggest, for the most part, that it’s something to look forward to.

To fuel the list of reasons to be excited about Gilliam’s new movie, we have a couple of new clips for you. Neither of them feature Ledger (I’m guessing they don’t want to release too much of him in the movie), but they’re worth checking out nonetheless. Check out Ben Wishaw, Verne Troyer, Lily Cole and Christopher Plummer in action (oops… did that sound right?):

Terry Gilliam’s upcoming fantasy movie The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus premiered at Cannes yesterday. And the film, which sees the late Heath Ledger give his last role before his untimely death, has gotten a mixed reception, going by the first and early reviews of it.

We also have a minute-long clip of the movie that is a longer version of the Cannes festival preview video we reported on the other day. But before we get to that, here are some excerpts from the various reviews for Doctor Parnassus that have come out:

Variety

Especially considering the trauma and difficulties stemming from Heath Ledger’s death during production and the fact that Terry Gilliam hadn’t directed a good picture in more than a decade, the helmer has made a pretty good thing out of a very bad situation…

Last week Screen Rant reported on the first footage from Terry Gilliam’s upcoming fantasy film The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, which sees the late Heath Ledger in his last ever film role (he sadly never got to complete it, though). It wasn’t much (only about 16 seconds or so) but today Screen Rant has a batch of new images to give you more of a look at the movie.

Doctor Parnassus is set to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival today, so expect to hear the “thumbs up/thumbs down” verdict from the people who are lucky enough to be there and get in to see it. For those less fortunate, this latest set of images will have to do for now:

“Can I ask you a question – ‘Do you dream?’ Or should I say, ‘Can you put a price… on your dreams?’”

Recently the official website for this year’s Cannes Film Festival has made a video available which is a showcase of most of the movies that are playing there. Some of the footage we have already seen (such as Inglourious Basterds and Drag Me To Hell) but the majority of it is brand new, never before seen looks at the various movies.

The video is almost a half hour long with the new footage of the films starting at around the 17 minute mark. But if you’re determined enough to watch the whole thing you will get to some very noteworthy footage of the late Heath Ledger in his last ever role (that’s ...

Click to continue reading First Footage of Heath Ledger In ‘Doctor Parnassus’

This last project that Heath Ledger worked on was The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus.

After Heath’s passing, big name actors Colin Farrell, Jude Law and Johnny Depp stepped in to play the role of Tony that Heath was playing to help finish the film. This Terry Gilliam-directed (Fear And Loathing in Las Vegas, Monty Python And The Holy Grail) fantasy film is about an extraordinary traveling show where members of the audience get an irresistible opportunity to choose between light and joy or darkness and gloom.

Additional cast members for the movie include Christopher Plummer, Tom Waits and Verne Troyer. (Well at least Verne isn’t making any more “personal” videos!)
