'Avatar' may have grossed $2.7 billion worldwide, but it also tops the list of the most pirated movies of 2010. See what other movies were the most popular illegal downloads of the year.

There are plenty of threats to the entertainment industry every year, but movie piracy consistently comes up as the biggest. Authorities continue to seek avenues to shut down the illegal downloading of movies, but apparently it is not enough. In 2010, nearly 100 million downloads were recorded – and those were just the top ten most pirated movies of the year.

The misconception with pirated movies is that those who watch on their computer are not actually going to the theater. For the most part, we can assume this is true. But when a film like Avatar comes in at the top spot with 16.5 million illegal downloads, one must wonder how many of those people also contributed to the movie’s record-breaking $2.7 billion at the worldwide box office.

Whether it’s soldiers disarming bombs in The Hurt Locker, an all out seafood war with Prawns in District 9 or even a couple of $500 million blue cats in Avatar; audiences around the world have been treated to a veritable treasure trove of motion picture excellence.
Actor Jeremy Renner is becoming a big name in Hollywood thanks to his starring role in 'The Hurt Locker' and potential projects are lining up...

Jeremy Renner is quickly becoming the toast of the Hollywood scene thanks to his latest movie The Hurt Locker. Although he didn’t win the Best Actor Award at last night’s BAFTAs, The Hurt Locker did win quite a few awards, and Renner’s role as SSG William James, the adrenaline junkie that diffuses bombs in Iraq, has propelled him to the top of everyone’s short list.

Last December, Renner’s name was floating the movie news world as a possible candidate to play Hawkeye in the upcoming Avengers movie – a rumor that Renner was quick to shoot down. So while he may or may not be in a Marvel film of some sort, one thing is for sure – Renner has his pick of projects. According to a Reuters article over at the New York Times, Renner ...

Click to continue reading Jeremy Renner in Talks for ‘Battleship’, ‘Raven’ & Mystery Project

Screen Rant attends the BAFTA awards where The Hurt Locker wins big. What was it like rubbing elbows with some of the most lauded performers and filmmakers of the last year? Find out first-hand

In the past it was seen as a poor relation to the Oscars, but with a switch in date – that has set the BAFTA before its American counterpart- the awards are now seen as a strong indicator of who will win at the 82nd Academy Awards.

As Screen Rant’s England-based writer I had the wonderful opportunity to attend the BAFTA award ceremony in London yesterday and it was a pretty impressive evening…

Braving some pretty terrible weather (snow is something that the Brits haven’t managed to overcome) I travelled down to London to attend the event. After checking into my hotel room and grabbing a bite to eat, I suited up in my best tux and black ...

Click to continue reading Screen Rant Goes To The 2010 BAFTAS

Today marks the day when the nominations for the 36th Annual Saturn Awards are given out. In case you’re not familiar with them, they are given out by The Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films (they also include TV shows and stage productions) so as a reader of Screen Rant I believe they’re right up your alley .

The awards will be given out on June 24th, so we have over four months to speculate and choose the nominees we’d give the award to. The categories range from the usual Best Film (separated into Fantasy, Horror, Science Fiction etc) to Best DVD release and Best DVD Special Edition.

Keeping in line with all of the rest of the major awards, films like Avatar, The Hurt Locker and Inglourious Basterds ...

Click to continue reading Avatar Leads 2010 Saturn Awards Nominations

Tomorrow morning, Tuesday February 2nd, the official nominations for the 82nd Academy Awards will be announced live. The 2010 Oscar presentation will take place Sunday, March 7, 2010, hosted by none other than the comedic pair of Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin.

Sick of Avatar or its week-after-week success and record-breaking numbers? Well, many moviegoers certainly aren’t as Avatar was again #1 at the box office this weekend, destroying Mel Gibson’s return to glory. Avatar’s estimated $30 million domestic draw over the weekend makes it number one for the seventh weekend in a row (7th!) and it also marks the largest 7th weekend for any movie ever.

This past weekend the race for 2010 Oscar got just a bit more debatable, with some surprise winners walking away from both the Producers Guild Awards (PGA) and the Screen Actors Guild Awards (SAG).

James Cameron walked away happy from The 2010 Golden Globe Awards, with Avatar taking the top trophies for Best Director and Best Dramatic Picture, leading everybody to think that the Oscars would follow suit. With the Best Picture category now open to ten nominees, variety and uncertainty were suppossed to be this year’s theme.

However, in the months leading up to the biggest award in Hollywood, only a handful of films seem to be popping up as the top contenders.

The names we keep hearing again and again are as follows (listed by name with the director in parenthesis).

Avatar (James Cameron)

The Hurt Locker (Kathryn Bigelow)

I’m sure if you’re at all interested in which movies win what at each of the big award ceremonies, you caught the 67 Annual Golden Globe Awards last night on NBC. It was a fun show (as the Globes usually are compared to the Oscars), with some predictable/expected winners and some pretty major shocks.

Rickey Gervais was an absolute hoot as the host, jabbing in and out with often controversial but almost always funny gags which ranged from a Mel Gibson drinking joke (“I like a drink as much as the next man. Unless the next man is Mel Gibson.”) to one about Jennifer Aniston and Gerard Butler (“It’s Rachel from Friends and that bloke out of 300.”). Great stuff from a great host choice.

With the award season in full swing, we at Screen Rant figured that maybe we should be covering these prestigious events because who knows, Mariah Carey could get up and say something crazy at one of these things OR Mariah Carey could get up and say something crazy at two of these things.

In case of such events, the general consensus is that we need someone around to provide hilarious, informative and cute/endearing commentary as well as someone that you, the reader, can yell at when you don’t agree with something we say.

So, join us back here at 8PM (EST) and we’ll kick things off as the always wonderful Ricky Gervais hosts the 2010 Golden Globe Awards.

The Hurt Locker is one of the best movies of 2009 and its star, Jeremy Renner, has a bright future ahead of him. For us comic book movie fans, we hope that future involves Renner taking on the role of Hawkeye in some of the upcoming films by Marvel Studios.

Last month, the rumor of Renner playing Hawkeye made headlines everywhere following the glowingly positive reception of his performance in The Hurt Locker and an interview with Empire where the actor revealed that he went in to talk to Marvel about Captain America but instead ended up talking the character of Hawkeye. Nothing official came of it (that we know of) but if were to happen, he said that ...

Click to continue reading Jeremy Renner Claims “No Truth” In Hawkeye Rumors

Every site you go to these days has a list of their top 10 best movies of the year. But how many time can you look at slight variations of the same lists you only semi-agree with?

Besides, ranking entire movies is a big job. After much debate on the subject, we here at Screen Rant have decided that, in the end, a year in movies is perhaps best defined by specific movie moments that are now and forever burned into our collective memory.

So, without further ado, here are our picks for those 2009 movie moments which audiences collectively remember as being unforgettably awesome, hilarious, moving, inspiring or are otherwise just plain enjoyable…

Today we have something a little special for you Screen Rant readers – a roundtable discussion with some of the best directors in the business, courtesy of The Hollywood Reporter. The roundtable features (ready for this?) James Cameron (Avatar), Quentin Tarantino (Inglourious Basterds), Peter Jackson (The Lovely Bones), Jason Reitman (Up in the Air), Kathryn Bigelow (The Hurt Locker) and Lee Daniels (Precious). All at the same table!

The discussion is broken into three videos; we’ve posted one here and you can head over to THR if you want to watch the rest (and why wouldn’t you?). The one we’ve chosen is Cameron, Jackson and Co. talking about what they feel is the toughest scene to shoot as a director. Answers range from the big cinematic stuff to the up-close-and-personal scenes.
Our friend Ed Douglas had a chance to speak with the talented Jeremy Renner on behalf of SuperHeroHype yesterday at the Independent Film Gotham Awards where The Hurt Locker, for which he starred in, took home a big pile of well-deserved awards.

Renner of course made big headlines a few days ago when Empire put up an interview with him where they discussed his interest and Marvel’s interest in having him play the character of Hawkeye. Renner cleared up the current status of his involvement by revealing that they seemingly were interested in casting that character but since they’ve yet to select a director to helm the epic Avengers movie, they’ll wait until they do and see what ...

Click to continue reading Jeremy Renner Hints At Ultimate Hawkeye in The Avengers

Well, the summer movie season is officially over, and while box office earnings are way up, it seems like the quality of the films have actually gone way down. But for every few badly-written movies (like X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Transformers 2, and G.I. Joe–though some will say it’s not that bad), there was a diamond in the rough like District 9. So why were so many movies so bad in the summer of ’09, even if they did make a lot of money? Hint: The Writers Strike!

Before the summer began, I wrote an article about how the 2007 Writers Strike might affect the summer 2009 movies. I speculated that back in 2007, studios were nervous about how long the writers strike could last, leaving them with a ...

Click to continue reading Summer 2009: The Season Of Bad Movies [Updated]

George Miller has been working on a new Mad Max film for almost a decade and old Max himself, Mel Gibson, was set to return in Mad Max 4: Fury Road in 2002 when the war in Iraq scuttled the project. Since then, Gibson has passed on the role stating that he is too old to play the character.

Miller has pondered many different possibilities for the future of the franchise, ranging from recasting the part, to making the next installment in the series an animated film.

Now it would appear that Miller has decided to return to the live action format with The Hurt Locker star, Jeremy Renner, as a possible candidate for the lead role of Mad Max.

In an interview with The Modesto Bee about Kathryn Bigelow’s latest critically-acclaimed movie, The Hurt Locker, Renner revealed some details on ...

Click to continue reading Is Jeremy Renner The New Mad Max?

Short Version: The Hurt Locker captures the drama, suspense and raw emotion of a job that very few people survive. It may possibly be the best movie of the summer.

Screen Rant's Paul Young reviews 'The Hurt Locker'

The Hurt Locker has been slowly building up steam since it was released in Italy last year. The movie came out of nowhere to earn much kudos and critical acclaim with both viewers and movie critics alike – it won the Signis Grand Prize at the 2008 Venice Film Festival and currently has a 98% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. To top it off, the film has made more money per theater than any other film in release right now, including Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen.

The first eight minutes of director Kathryn Bigelow’s (Point Break) new film The Hurt Locker are now viewable online. This film first blipped onto my radar back in February, when I saw an extended clip from it screened at the New York Comic-Con.

The Hurt Locker follows an Army Explosive Ordnance Device (EOD) Unit operating in Iraq – however this is no preachy political film. It’s all about a particular brand of warriors in their combat arena; soldiers living daily life walking into harm’s way. Just watch the clip for yourself, see if The Hurt Locker manages to drag you too out onto the edge of your seat.

UPDATE: The video was previously pulled at the request of Summit Entertainment because someone stole it from their FTP site, but now it’s been ...

Click to continue reading Opening ‘The Hurt Locker’ [Update]

Last week we reported on some new clips and images from the upcoming action-war film, The Hurt Locker. Having been showed in other countries around the world as far back as April last year, the film is just this month making it’s way to the US. Everything we’ve seen from it so far has looked great, and today we have a brand new poster for it that just adds to that list.

The new Hurt Locker poster is what you would aptly describe as, “explosive, intense, exciting,” and any other number of descriptive words of that sort that you can think of. Check it out below:
