‘Hangover 3′, ’300′ Spinoff & ‘Pacific Rim’ Get New Release Dates

Warner Bros. has gone ahead and penciled in official theatrical release dates for a pair of new franchise installments: The Hangover Part III, which once again chronicles the inebriated escapades of The Wolfpack (played by Bradley Cooper, Zach Galifianakis, and Ed Helms) – and the 300 spinoff, which is still tentatively being referred to as 300: Battle of Artemisia, but is expected to be released under a different title.

Meanwhile, the studio has gone ahead and moved Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim back a couple months. The Pan’s Labyrinth filmmaker’s throwback to Japanese giant monster sci-fi genre fare is now set to hit theaters on July 12th, 2013… which, ironically enough, is the same date it was originally scheduled for theatrical release, before Warner Bros. scooted it up to May 10th of next year.

1. Hollywood loves a good franchise, and studios will often stop at nothing in an attempt to make more cash from something that has been a hit. If stars aren’t willing, they’ll simply recast or throw truckloads of money at actors so that they’ll sign on for more of the same. It appears that Warner Bros. has decided on the latter option, in an attempt to recapture the box office magic of The Hangover and its sequel.

There’s been almost nothing to report with regards to The Hangover Part III, since Warner Bros. confirmed that the threequel was indeed on the way – though, anyone who noted that the second Hangover movie made over $580 million worldwide in theaters (on an $80 million budget) could’ve told you as much.

The Hangover Part II hits DVD and Blu-ray this week, so franchise star Bradley Cooper has been out promoting the occasion. Naturally, he’s been pressed for (and had obliged with) details about the next adventure concerning The Wolfpack.

Get Ready for ‘The Hangover Part 3′; Set to Conclude the Wolfpack Trilogy

We’re still more than a week away from the release of the highly-anticipated follow-up to Todd Phillips’ surprise hit, The Hangover. While trailers for the original film certainly hinted at a fun night at the theater (as a result of the Wolfpack’s disastrous night in Vegas), no one could have anticipated just how popular the comedy would be with mainstream moviegoers.

That is to say, no one but Phillips himself, who now (jokingly) claims that the Hangover films were envisioned as a trilogy. Despite the fact few people have even seen The Hangover Part 2 yet, fans of the franchise will be glad to know that the director fully intends for The Hangover Part 3 to make it to the big screen.

Not long after The Hangover Part II began production, rumors surfaced that Mel Gibson would be making a brief appearance in the film as a tattoo artist. The first Hangover had set a precedent for controversial celebrity cameos by working Mike Tyson into the storyline and Gibson’s involvement with the sequel implied that not only were the filmmakers aware of the troubled actor’s reputation – they were probably intending to capitalize on it.

However, as Gibson’s bad press reached a fever pitch, director Todd Phillips ultimately decided to replace him with a more affable star. Liam Neeson agreed to take over the role and was quickly dispatched to the set for a quick one day shoot. The comedy hit of 2009, The Hangover, introduced us to four friends who hit a little snag in Las Vegas in a last-minute stag party. Losing their soon-to-be-wed best friend during a drunken adventure, the three groomsmen – played by Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms and Zach Galifianakis – attempt to retrace their steps and hilarity ensues, boosted by a surprise cameo of Mike Tyson.

The self-proclaimed “Wolfpack” are back and off to another wild, drunken adventure for The Hangover Part II. This time however, Phil (Bradley Cooper), Stu (Ed Helms), Alan (Zach Galifianakis) and Doug (Justin Bartha) are off to Thailand to celebrate Stu’s wedding on what they thought would be a trip safer and calmer then their Vegas excursion.

The Hangover won the hearts and laughs of moviegoers in the summer of 2009, managing to rake in almost half a billion dollars at the worldwide box office on a small production budget of $35 million. Beauty, adventure, bustling urban centers, a gorgeous jungle countryside, jaw-dropping ancient architecture, ladyboys, “ping-pong shows,” underground fighting rings, shots of cobra blood, delicious Pad Thai and a city overrun by monkeys. These were the things I got excited about back in July of 2009 when “El Guapo” over at Latino Review first broke the news that The Hangover 2 is going to be set in Thailand.

As always, this year’s MTV Movie Awards was two things: eye-rolling because of its results and entertaining in its own right.

We all know the awards themselves mean absolutely nothing in the grand scheme of things (they might as well call it “The Twilight Awards”) but for the most part the show manages to be at least fun to watch (often that’s more than can be said for the Oscars).

The Hangover 2 Cast Signed & Confirmed

There’s been talk of a sequel to 2009′s smash hit comedy The Hangover ever since it debuted last summer to great reviews, a strong opening weekend and a total of nearly half a billion dollars at the worldwide box office.

Rumors about the sequel included a possible setting in Thailand, which was later shot down by director Todd Phillips. That originated shortly after the film’s release from star Zach Galifianakis and could have been just one of many ideas they had while basking in the success of the first movie. Later, Ed Helms revealed that co-star Justin Bartha (the dude who was supposed to get married in The Hangover) would be back, hopefully making the group not just a trio anymore.

2010 Golden Globe Award Winners

I’m sure if you’re at all interested in which movies win what at each of the big award ceremonies, you caught the 67 Annual Golden Globe Awards last night on NBC. It was a fun show (as the Globes usually are compared to the Oscars), with some predictable/expected winners and some pretty major shocks.

Rickey Gervais was an absolute hoot as the host, jabbing in and out with often controversial but almost always funny gags which ranged from a Mel Gibson drinking joke (“I like a drink as much as the next man. Unless the next man is Mel Gibson.”) to one about Jennifer Aniston and Gerard Butler (“It’s Rachel from Friends and that bloke out of 300.”). Great stuff from a great host choice.

2009 A ‘Milestone Year’ For Movie Profits

I groaned out loud back in August when I found out about the record-breaking summer 2009 box office profits. Now we’re hearing new projections stating that when New Year’s Eve rolls over into New Year’s Day, the movie industry will have crossed a box office milestone, with profits predicted to exceed the $10 billion mark.

I’m sure we’d all be happy that our favorite medium was thriving in the midst of sharp economic downturn – that is, if so many movies hadn’t turned out to be crap this year. Now, the only thing I’m wondering (and you should too) is: “What lesson will Hollywood take from this?”

Chances are if you’re a fan of comedies and live anywhere near a movie theater, then you were one of the many people who went to see Todd Phillip’s hilarious bachelor-comedy, The Hangover. The film went on to become the single highest-grossing R-rated comedy of all time, raking in over $450 million worldwide from a budget of $35 million.

That’s impressive for a film that didn’t seem like it would make that big of a splash. Just something about it – on top of it being genuinely funny pretty much from start to finish – connected with a wide audience and people went out to see it in droves.

This summer’s breakout hit has to be The Hangover. Everyone expected it to be funny and do well at the box office, but no one expected it to eclipse the $400 million worldwide mark. In case you didn’t know (or couldn’t guess), The Hangover 2 is already filming and planned for a Memorial Day 2011 release.

The film revolved around a group of four guys who head to Vegas for a bachelor party and after a night of raucous activities, can’t find the bachelor, have a baby to take care of and a tiger in their bathroom. Needless to say, all the pieces come together at the end of the film but have you ever thought to yourself “Man! How much would a night like that cost?”

GROAN… Summer 2009 Sets Box Office Record

So we just finished telling you why the Summer of 2009 was the season of bad movies. Now, as if to validate our point (sarcasm alert) Variety has just announced that the Summer of ’09 has set a new record as the highest grossing summer of all time at the U.S. domestic box office.

So there you have it, folks, it’s official: Hollywood has no reason to ever hire good writers, produce good scripts, or offer us anything better at the multiplex than what Michael Bay can half-envision.

Awesome.

With the unavoidable success of the raunchy, R-rated comedy The Hangover, Hollywood sees an opportunity that it’s not ashamed to exploit irrespective of the consequences, like John and Kate’s eight coattail riders. Let’s look at this from a purely business perspective: The Hangover cost a touch over $35 million to make, and so far its raked in $380 million. This week:

First there’s The Proposal and then there’s The Hangover; Moneyball gets thrown a curve-ball; Scream 4 isn’t Neve Campbell’s favorite scary movie; it looks like The A-Team won’t be Common and there’s an up and coming Red Dawn.

Box Office

Sandra Bullock scored the biggest opening of her career with The Proposal. The romantic comedy which co-stars Ryan Reynolds grossed $34 million over the weekend.

The Hangover remained a popular choice and moved into the runner-up spot with a weekend take of $26 million. With $152 million in the bank after three weeks, it looks like this is going to be a hugely profitable film and franchise for Warner Bros.

Up took in another $21 million from Friday to Monday giving the Pixar film a mighty $224 million tally.

This week:

Will Ferrell has a Hangover while the box office is UP; Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway do Drugs; Mary-Kate Olsen, Alex Pettyfer and Vanessa Hudgens are Beastly; Sigourney Weaver returns to aliens; Lemony Snicket gets animated and Roberts and Bardem Eat.

Pixar’s UP stayed on top of the box office with a second weekend gross of $44 million. With great reviews and $137 million already in the bank, it looks like UP will be one of the biggest hits of the summer season.The R-rated comedy The Hangover opened strong in second place with a weekend take of $43 million. With a sequel already in development, it looks like a weekend that Warner Bros. doesn’t want to forget.
