Mid-Week Movie News Wrap Up – April 9, 2009

This week:

Russell knows Aaron and Sarah; Freddy Krueger claims his first victim; more superheroes in The Umbrella Academy;; Warners dust off an old Goonies 2 script for Treehouse Gang and ever wondered what a movie starring Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Chris Rock, Rob Schneider, David Spade, Salma Hayek and Maria Bello would be like?

1. The Hollywood outsider who always manages to get in David O. Russell – is readying a new romantic comedy entitled Aaron and Sarah.The plot of the John Hughesesque comedy is as follows:

“Story centers on a nerdy guy and a popular girl who meet as freshmen and, over four years of high school, four proms and one funeral, become friends and eventually fall in love.”

It sounds like typical Hollywood fare, but I think that there just might be a little bit of bite to it – after all this is from the man who directed Three Kings, I Heart Huckabees Spanking the Monkey as well as the forthcoming Nailed with Jessica Biel and Jake Gyllenhaal.”

I wonder who is crazy enough to work with the man that got into a shoving match with George Clooney?

2. Kyle Gallner fresh off the horror success of The Haunting in Connecticut is a dead man. The young actor has signed on to star in the reboot of A Nightmare on Elm Street.

Jackie Earle Haley will play the iconic Freddy Krueger in the fresh take/ rehash of the horror franchise.

Gallner must love horror as he also stars in the yet to be released Jennifer’s Body which was written by Diablo Cody and stars Megan Fox..

3. Mark Bomback is adapting The Umbrella Academy for Universal Pictures. The film will be based on the Dark Horse comic book created by My Chemical Romance singer Gerard Way.

This is the plot:

“The Umbrella Academy is a group of disbanded superheroes who reunite after the death of their adoptive father, Sir Reginald Hargreeves, an alien disguised as a wealthy entrepreneur. Hargreeves collected the members of the group shortly after their birth and trained them to save the world, and after his death, they carry on his plan.”

I wonder if Rhianna will be on the soundtrack?

It never rains but it pours with Superhero movies.

4. Kent Alterman director of Semi-Pro will direct Treehouse Gang for Warner Bros.
According to The Hollywood Reporter:

“The project is based on Timothy Dowling’s spec, which centers on a group of six childhood friends who get together in their late twenties for a treasure hunt that echoes the hunts of their youth, in the process exploring longtime friendships and grudges.”

It’s pitched as a grown-up version of The Goonies, which is what The Goonies 2 was supposed to be – which was also set up at Warner Bros.

Anybody else think that they’re just re-using an old spec script for that film?

5. Maria Bello is in final negotiations to join Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Chris Rock, Rob Schneider, David Spade, Salma Hayek and Maya Rudolph in an untitled film which was written and will be produced by Sandler.

The film which will start shooting in May “revolves around high school friends who reunite 30 years later.”

Sandler chum Dennis Dugan will direct.

I swear that one day I’ll get this out on a Wednesday.

This week:

Dick Donner talks The Goonies 2; the film version of The Road may be delayed until 2009; Ron Shelton and Tim Robbins talk Bull Durham 2; Sam Raimi’s Sleeper gets a writer and Kight Rider and The Sarah Connor Chronicles get more scripts.

1. I seem to be spending a lot of time writing about Richard Donner lately. That’s not a complaint, he’s a great director and the man should get more praise. He should also be allowed to make more movies, be them Lethal Weapons or not.

Donner has announced that a sequel to his 80’s classic The Goonies has been scrapped. Donner told Variety:

“We tried really hard, and Steven (Spielberg) said, ‘Let’s do it.’ We had a lot of young writers submit work, but it just didn’t seem to call for it”

However, if you love The Goonies there might be a musical. Donner says:

“I’m in the process of trying to get it done as a musical on Broadway. Wouldn’t that be great?”

Dick, I really don’t know. Music by Cyndi Lauper?

2. Fans of Cormac McCarthy’s The Road may have a longer wait for the film adaptation of the novel. The Hollywood Reporter reports that the film won’t be making its scheduled release date of November 16.

The Viggo Mortensen starrer may be pushed to 2009, as director John Hillcoat is still in the editing phase. That’s gotta hurt as the film is seen as prime Oscar material. I know some people who have read the book, and it has brought a grown man to tears. He wasn’t a particularly tough man, but he cried all the same.

There could be a long road ahead.

3. There’s more news on the sequel to Bull Durham, Kevin Costner’s iconic baseball flick. Director Ron Shelton and co-star Tim Robbins have been talking up the film at the original movie’s 20th anniversary commemoration at the Baseball Hall of Fame. Shelton said:

“For 20 years I have said no to a sequel. For the last year we’ve been talking about it. I used to say ‘You can’t do a sequel 20 years later.’ Then the fact that it’s 20 years later started to intrigue me.”

Robbins says:

“I actually told Ron this idea a couple of months ago. (Nuke) hurt his arm. I want the sequel to open with him at one of those trade shows signing autographs.”

The pair went on to give a detailed plot for the film:

You pan from Pete Rose and all these guys getting $350 and $500 an autograph, and there’s Nuke and he’s getting 15 bucks. And he’s really steamed about it because (he was supposed) to get 25.

My view of his major-league career is he went up there and in his second year in the majors he was 18-4. In his third year he was 4-18,It was a sort of an unrealized career in which we saw glimpses of his greatness. (Crash Davis – Costner)is now managing Durham in Triple A, back with a (major-league) dream alive again. I think he’s kept this wonderful hot relationship with Annie (Susan Sarandon), who probably has the Faulkner Chair in Oxford, Miss. Crash and Annie find him in the middle of a drunken stupor in the middle of his hotel room or something and bring him back to the majors by teaching him how to throw a knuckleball …”

It sounds like it could work – but will Costner play ball?

4. Brad Ingelsby will write the adaptation of Sleeper for Warner Bros. The Comic book film will be produced by Sam Raimi and Josh Donen. Wrap Up favorite Tom Cruise is interested in starring.

5. Although ratings are dropping on both series, Fox and NBC has ordered more scripts for The Sarah Connor Chronicles and Knight Rider.

Might The Sarah Connor Chronicles be terminated? Could it be the end of the road for Knight Rider?

Maybe, but if things improve then you’ll have a few more episodes to watch, and lets face it – at least they aren’t canceled!

Is ‘The Goonies 2′ Finally Being Made?

I have a very vivid memory of watching The Goonies in the cinema as a child and considering that it was 1985 that’s no easy feat. My mum and aunt took my brother, my cousin and I to see Santa Claus: The Movie, but the screening was full. I know, I don’t get that either – it’s seen as one of the legendary bombs. Anyway, instead of seeing Santa Claus we went to see The Goonies, and we all loved it!

The Goonies from that moment on became our movie, and I still love it today. Over the years I managed to become a big fan of the work of Richard Donner, and to discover that he was behind it made it even cooler – how many iconic movies has this guy made? Superman, Lethal Weapon and The Omen - what a guy!

However, I digress – word from Moviehole is that the wheels have started to turn on a sequel to The Goonies – not a remake or a reboot, but an honest to goodness sequel. The kind that they used to make.

The really good news:

The Goonies 2 will not be a direct to DVD movie, it’ll be a proper theatrical film – with popcorn and everything!

Writers are now on board and apparently the film will include some of the original cast members.

Warner Bros. want this to be a big tent-pole picture, and I think that they’ve probably looked at the amount of money Indiana Jones and The Kindgom of the Crystal Skull made and realized that a blockbuster can appeal to older people and their kids. Throw in the original cast, chuck in some teenagers, and hey presto -there’s $700 million at the worldwide box office!

I hope that Richard Donner is involved in some capacity – he spent a good few years trying to get a sequel up and running, and to not involve him at all would just be plain rude. Ideally I’d love to see Donner direct it – he still has it in him (just go watch the recent 16 Blocks).

I also hope that Steven Spielberg is involved too – heck maybe this will inspire him to get his Amblin production company churning out top quality family flicks again – you know, the kind that we still enjoy watching today as adults even though they came out more than twenty years ago.

I’m quite excited by this, and I’m pretty sure that even my mother will be, so I hope that it comes to fruition.

I can’t wait for this.
