Kids in Danger: Top 10 Craziest ’80s Kids Movies

This past Monday was the 25th anniversary of the release of one of my all-time favorite movies: The Goonies. In reflecting on the film, I began asking myself why I like the movie so much. Obviously there’s the adventure-centric plot and the memorable characters (Will you ever forget Data’s slick shoes or Chunk’s famous “Truffle Shuffle”?), but I realized there’s something less obvious about the film that also makes me like it.

Unlike many modern day family movies, the characters in The Goonies aren’t treated like kids. Not only do they cuss and fight and swear, but they also face some ridiculously dangerous situations. How many kids movies do you know where the lead characters are chased by a criminal gang, ...

Chris Columbus Talks Gremlins & Goonies

Recently there have been rumors floating about reporting that the 80’s classic Gremlins would get the inevitable reboot treatment in the now obligatory 3D. Details on the alleged film have been sketchy at best, but now, original Gremlins writer and director of the forthcoming Percy Jackson and The Olympians: The Lightening Thief, Chris Columbus, has spoke about the project and sequels to some of his biggest hits – Mrs Doubtfire and The Goonies.

When asked by Coming Soon about a third Gremlins film Columbus said:

“I spoke to Steven Spielberg a couple days ago and said, ‘You know, I’ve been reading on the internet about this ‘Gremlins 3D’ and no one’s approached him either, so I don’t know if that’s really true.”

Russell knows Aaron and Sarah; Freddy Krueger claims his first victim; more superheroes in The Umbrella Academy;; Warners dust off an old Goonies 2 script for Treehouse Gang and ever wondered what a movie starring Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Chris Rock, Rob Schneider, David Spade, Salma Hayek and Maria Bello would be like?

1. The Hollywood outsider who always manages to get in David O. Russell – is readying a new romantic comedy entitled Aaron and Sarah.The plot of the John Hughesesque comedy is as follows:

“Story centers on a nerdy guy and a popular girl who meet as freshmen and, over four years of high school, four proms and one funeral, become friends and eventually fall in love.”

It sounds like typical Hollywood fare, but I think that there just might be a little bit of bite to it – after all this is from the man who directed Three ...

I swear that one day I’ll get this out on a Wednesday.

This week:

Dick Donner talks The Goonies 2; the film version of The Road may be delayed until 2009; Ron Shelton and Tim Robbins talk Bull Durham 2; Sam Raimi’s Sleeper gets a writer and Kight Rider and The Sarah Connor Chronicles get more scripts.

1. I seem to be spending a lot of time writing about Richard Donner lately. That’s not a complaint, he’s a great director and the man should get more praise. He should also be allowed to make more movies, be them Lethal Weapons or not.

Donner has announced that a sequel to his 80′s classic The Goonies has been scrapped. Donner told Variety:

“We tried really hard, and Steven (Spielberg) said, ‘Let’s do it.’ We had a lot of young writers submit work, but it just didn’t seem to call for it”

Is ‘The Goonies 2′ Finally Being Made?

I have a very vivid memory of watching The Goonies in the cinema as a child and considering that it was 1985 that’s no easy feat. My mum and aunt took my brother, my cousin and I to see Santa Claus: The Movie, but the screening was full. I know, I don’t get that either – it’s seen as one of the legendary bombs. Anyway, instead of seeing Santa Claus we went to see The Goonies, and we all loved it!

The Goonies from that moment on became our movie, and I still love it today. Over the years I managed to become a big fan of the work of Richard Donner, and to discover that he was behind it made it even cooler – how many iconic movies has this guy made?
