Mark Wahlberg made a very public official announcement at the Spike TV Guys Choice Awards: He is indeed moving ahead with 'The Fighter 2'. Will the cast and director David O. Russell also return?

The Fighter was one of the best movies of 2010, and also one of most (pleasantly) surprising. Many expected a traditional sports drama biopic, but instead, quirky auteur David O. Russell delivered a darkly funny look at the life and rise of middleweight boxer “Irish” Micky Ward to the status of champion in the early 2000s.

However, boxing fans know that Micky’s rise to champion was only the beginning of his story – which is why Fighter star Mark Wahlberg let it be known early this past spring that The Fighter 2 was in the works.

Since that initial reveal by Wahlberg, The Fighter 2 has been gradually veering into the fast-track. First we learned that Wahlberg was pushing the project ahead, with plans to reprise his role as Ward; soon after ...

Click to continue reading Mark Wahlberg Confirms ‘The Fighter 2′

When Mark Wahlberg discussed his intentions to make a sequel to The Fighter earlier this month, the response from some of the original film’s fans wasn’t overwhelmingly positive. Many insisted that the filmmakers would be wise to just leave it be and asserted that The Fighter 2 ran the risk of becoming another unfortunate entry into Hollywood’s pantheon of unnecessary follow-ups.

Wahlberg doesn’t see it that way. Not only is he staying in shape for a potential Fighter sequel, he also believes that most of the cast & crew would probably be game for another round as well. Although the project is far from being official, Wahlberg already has one other Fighter-alum in his corner – director David O. Russell.

Russell has never made a sequel to any of his previous films, but his long-standing ...

Click to continue reading David O.
David O. Russell’s multiple Oscar-nominated film (and winner for the performances of Christian Bale and Melissa Leo) The Fighter was released on DVD/Blu-ray yesterday. The home video release also provided star Mark Wahlberg with the opportunity to reflect back on his experience making the film – and talk more about his hopes for The Fighter 2.

Wahlberg has discussed the possibility of a Fighter sequel before and now says that he’s not only actively pushing for the project to happen, but he’s already working out and keeping fit for when it does.

Real-life boxer Micky Ward’s (Wahlberg) career flourished for several years following the events of The Fighter, as is mentioned during the film’s epilogue. The true highlight of his career is generally considered not to be his winning of the welterweight title, but rather his ...

Click to continue reading Mark Wahlberg Gives ‘The Fighter 2′ Update

This week's crop of new DVDs and Blu-rays are a little thin, but with 'Hereafter', 'The Fighter' and the Jennifer Aniston comedy 'The Switch', movie fans have a good range to pick from.

This week in DVD and Blu-ray releases is a little scarce, but offers at least three films worth a glance. The three movies come with a combined eight Oscars nominations…and one Razzie nomination.

Unfortunately, there are no exciting Blu-ray re-releases this week. If you picked up The Walking Dead last week, maybe this week’s limited home video releases won’t bother you as much.

The Criterion Collection releases a pair of Blu-ray transfers this week: Yi Yi and Au revoir les enfants. If either of those interest you, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a better copy on home video now that Criterion has made its mark.

The following titles are now available on DVD and Blu-ray:

Mark Wahlberg has opened up about the possibility of a sequel to his Oscar-nominated 'The Fighter' - one that would chronicle Micky Ward's legendary trilogy of fights against Arturo Gatti.

We’re still sifting through a lot of the info that was spilled on the red carpet of the 83rd Academy Awards, but one tidbit that was dug up by Extra‘s Mario Lopez has certainly piqued our curiosity.

In talking with Mark Wahlberg, star of The Fighter, it was revealed that there may in fact be a sequel to David O. Russell’s Oscar-nominated film about the life of boxer “Irish” Mickey Ward in the works.

Now The Fighter was a unique piece of cinema that came as a surprise hit in the 2010 lineup. In my 5-star review of the film, I praised director David O. Russell for taking what could’ve been your standard sports drama about a boxer (Micky Ward, played by Wahlberg) who overcomes both personal and athletic ...

Click to continue reading Mark Wahlberg Says ‘The Fighter 2′ Could Happen

As we edge ever closer to the biggest movie award ceremony around, the Oscars, we have another set of nominations to mull over: The 37th Annual Saturn Awards.

While the Oscars, Golden Globes and the BAFTAs tend to recognize the more “serious” films (some would say in a way that is out of touch), award ceremonies like the Saturn Awards nominate films that average moviegoers would likely champion as their favorites of the year – not to mention the ceremony also recognizes the best TV shows and DVD release the year had to offer.

Last year the Saturn Awards were dominated by a little film called Avatar (you may have heard of it), but as you’ll see below fan favorite Inception dominates things this year with a whopping nine nominations, while other popular films like ...

Click to continue reading Inception Leads 2011 Saturn Award Nominees

The British Academy Film Awards – or as most Americans refer to them, “the British version of the Academy Awards” – were held last night. As one of the more respected entertainment awards shows, the BAFTA film awards tend to, but don’t always, predict the big winners for the subsequent Oscars, which will be held in two weeks’ time on February 27th.

In an unsurprising turn, Tom Hooper’s favored film, The King’s Speech, starring Colin Firth, Helena Bonham Carter, and Geoffrey Rush, and David Fincher’s The Social Network, starring Jesse Eisenberg and Andrew Garfield, were the big winners of the night.

Without further adieu, the 2011 BAFTA Film Awards went to:

Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher’s No Strings Attached topped the box office over the weekend with a decent $20.3 million debut. The R-rated comedy surpassed the start of recent adult-themed comedies, a major factor in this was more than likely Portman’s Black Swan publicity blitz.

For 68 years, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association has been celebrating their favorites in film and television with the Golden Globe Awards.

Once again, the multifaceted and generally hilarious Ricky Gervais will be serving as host of tonight’s gala. While those in attendance will be filled with anticipation about whether or not they will take home the award in their chosen category, viewers at home will be anxiously waiting to see how far Gervais will push the comedic envelope with his monologue and numerous ad-libs throughout the night.

With 25 separate categories having to fit within tonight’s given time slot, something tells me that Gervais will be moving things along at a swift pace – all while sipping from his iconic glass a beer that always remains not-so-hidden beneath his podium.

Box Office

Seth Rogen’s often delayed The Green Hornet (read our review here) will top the box office over the Martin Luther King Jr. weekend. The film which also stars Jay Chou as sidekick Kato should pull in an estimated $40.5 million over the holiday weekend ($34 million for the three days). While it’s not a disastrous result, it is a bit on the low side for a $100 million plus budgeted superhero film. It’ll be interesting to see how this holds up in the weeks to come.

It appears that people are just too busy at Christmas to read reviews. That can be the only reason for the Fockers having two weeks at the top, right?

Jeff Bridges was in the runner-up position with True Grit. The Coen Brothers film upped its domestic total to $86.8 million after grossing $24.5 million over the weekend, giving the pair their highest grossing film ever. More gold awaits.

We’ve spent the last few days carrying on about the worst films of 2010 and the biggest disappointments in the hopes of healing our and your collective psyches from the damage sustained after watching inane movies like Jonah Hex or Furry Vengeance (*shudder*).

Now we turn our attention to the high points of 2010 – namely, the movies that met or exceeded our expectations and entertained us enough so as to earn a permanent spot on our personal favorites films list.

While a favorite movies list does not strictly correspond with a best movies list (case in point – flicks like Citizen Kane or The Seventh Seal aren’t traditionally considered proper choices for a fun Saturday night viewing), there’s certainly a good deal of crossover between the two. A number of this year’s ...

Click to continue reading Our Favorite Movies of 2010

When awards season rolls around every year there always seems to be a group of films that are tapped to pick up their share of the major awards. 2010 is no exception and this year the likes of Toy Story 3, Inception, The King’s Speech, The Social Network, Black Swan and The Fighter are among those which have won awards already and look likely to pick up some Oscars as well.

However, when it comes to the Screen Actors Guild (SAG), the Directors Guild of America (DGA) and the Writers Guild of America (WGA), there are rules which often prohibit certain awards favorites from winning in some of the big categories offered by awards ceremonies.

Following the Oscars deeming the scores for Black Swan, True Grit and The Fighter ineligible for ...

Click to continue reading Toy Story 3, The King’s Speech & More Ineligible For WGA Screenplay Awards

With another holiday movie season upon us, we take a look at the best and worst films released during the Christmas movie season over the last ten years.

There are several calendar dates throughout the year where studios rush to release all their big tentpole films in an attempt to maximize on the number of people who will see them, and each date corresponds with a major U.S. holiday – Memorial Day, 4th of July, and Christmas.

Films released during Memorial Day and 4th of July usually open on the exact dates of those holidays, while films being released for the Christmas season begin showing up in theaters anywhere from ten to fifteen days before December 25th.

Some of these films are highly anticipated and draw in millions of viewers, generating obscenely large box office numbers (think Avatar), while other films only have moderate expectations. Then there are the failures – the films so bad, so ridiculously inept, that ...

Click to continue reading Best & Worst Christmas Movie Releases of the Past 10 Years

The Academy Awards have brought out the snub stick once again, disqualifying four of the year's best scores including 'Black Swan' and 'True Grit,' for not being original enough.

Get your pitchforks out and light the torches because the Academy Awards are at it again. Each year it seems a popular movie is knocked out of contention before the nominations are announced out of some pre-existing rule for qualifications. Now, four contenders for Original Score have been eliminated from Oscar contention.

Variety reports the scores for Black Swan and True Grit have been disqualified due to “the use of tracked themes or other pre-existing music.” In addition, The Fighter and The Kids Are All Right have also been taken out of competition as they are “diminished in impact by the predominant use of songs.” There are plenty of great scores from this year, but these were definite contenders. In fact, Black Swan ...

Click to continue reading ‘Black Swan’ & ‘True Grit’ Scores Ineligible For Academy Awards

Tron: Legacy won the belt of box office champion. The highly promoted and belated sequel to the ‘80s film grossed an estimated $43.6 million over the weekend.
