‘Dark Knight Returns’ Animated Movie Reveals Voice Cast & First Images [Updated]

DC Entertainment is bringing Frank Miller’s trend-setting Batman comic storyline, The Dark Knight Returns, to cinematic life. Miller’s original, four-issue graphic novel will be split into two animated features.

Warner Bros. and DC have jointly announced the voice cast for this project. Similar to how the studios’ animated take on Miller’s Batman: Year One comic featured an untested voice-actor as the young Bruce Wayne – rather than a tried-and-true fan-fave like Kevin Conroy – Dark Knight Returns will also mix things up, with respect to the old(er) Bruce Wayne’s voice.

Batman Infographic: Every (Significant) Bat-Suit Ever

Comic book writer Grant Morrison said it best: “[Every bat-suit is] completely different” – sometimes insanely different – “but they’re all instantly recognizable as [the-bat-suit].”

Unlike Superman, who has more or less been wearing the same blue and red strongman since Action Comics #1 in 1938, Batman just keeps changing his appearance every few years to keep up with the times. Basically, he’s the Madonna of superheroes.

Which is why I created this Batman infographic — to keep track of every single “significant” bat-suit across all mediums (which excludes a grand majority of the bat-suits featured in non-canonical comic books, in case you were wondering).

‘Dark Knight Rises’ Batcave Rumors; Possible ‘Dark Knight Returns’ Connection?

While we await The Dark Knight Rises trailer (which will likely be coming soon – stay tuned), we’ve had little besides a few official plot details and a whole lot of rumors and speculation to report. Today, we have a little of both to share.

A new rumor from an unconfirmed source hints at what the Batcave will look like in the reconstructed Wayne Manor. On the more official side of things, actor Gary Oldman discussed his role as Jim Gordon in Dark Knight Rises, and made a few statements that (in my opinion) point to small traces of Frank Miller’s ’The Dark Knight Returns‘ storyline being in TDKR‘s DNA.

What with all the massive movie, television, and comic book announcements at Comic-Con 2011, it was easy to overlook some of the animated superhero announcements, both in film and television.

DC, as per usual, had a pretty large showing with Green Lantern: The Animated Series video clips and announcements about their 2012-2013 schedule – including the animated adaptations of The Dark Knight Returns, Justice League: Doom, and The Killing Joke.

But Marvel’s slate, which included footage of Ultimate Spider-Man, was nothing to scoff at, either.

Of all the many major comic book movies in production and coming out throughout the year, there’s no arguing the Christopher Nolan and Warner Bros. are the most successful at keeping their projects secretive. From casting, to storylines, The Dark Knight Rises has endured so much speculation and so little of it has been confirmed.

Thanks to a very intriguing report from set of The Dark Knight Rises, a seemingly important scene was shot featuring an actor that reveals more about the plot of Batman 3, and the Nolan Batman trilogy as a whole.

‘The Dark Knight Returns’ Animated Feature On the Way?

Along with Watchmen, The Dark Knight Returns was the comic book that changed comic books – both for the better and the worse. Now, twenty-five years on, comic book writers are still trying to emulate the dark, gritty, and imaginative sensibilities of Frank Miller’s groundbreaking story, typically emphasizing the dark and gritty over the imaginative.

So it was pretty much a given that the story – which I endearingly refer to as Old Man Batman In the Future – would be adapted as a feature film, animated or otherwise. Well, according to Bleeding Cool, an animated version of The Dark Knight Returns is indeed on its way to the direct-to-DVD market.

Zack Snyder On Adapting The Dark Knight Returns

Watchmen and 300 director Zack Snyder let it be known last year at Comic-Con (during a Watchmen panel) that he, “would love to see Frank Miller’s Dark Knight Returns made into a movie.” And creator of the graphic novel Frank Miller even gave his blessing, saying that Snyder could go ahead with it if he wanted to.

However that obviously doesn’t in any way mean he would get the gig just because Miller gave it the thumbs up. Nor does it mean Snyder will be adapting the graphic novel just because he said he’d love to see it done.
