For 37 years, the People’s Choice Awards has been celebrating the fan favorites in film, television and music. In preparation for tonight’s awards ceremony, over 35 million votes were cast by the American public in hopes that their favorite film, television series, actor or musician will take home this coveted award.

For the second year in a row, the multifaceted Queen Latifah will be serving as host of this fanatical gala. With over 43 separate categories having to fit within the given timeslot, something tells me that Queen Latifah is going to be forced to move things along at a swift pace in order to fit each category within the 2-hour time-limit.

Toy Story 3, The King’s Speech & More Ineligible For WGA Screenplay Awards

When awards season rolls around every year there always seems to be a group of films that are tapped to pick up their share of the major awards. 2010 is no exception and this year the likes of Toy Story 3, Inception, The King’s Speech, The Social Network, Black Swan and The Fighter are among those which have won awards already and look likely to pick up some Oscars as well.

However, when it comes to the Screen Actors Guild (SAG), the Directors Guild of America (DGA) and the Writers Guild of America (WGA), there are rules which often prohibit certain awards favorites from winning in some of the big categories offered by awards ceremonies.

We’re now into awards season once more (time flies, doesn’t it?), with the Emmys having come and gone already. Now we have the annual 2010 Scream Awards which celebrates the more fan-friendly type of movies and TV shows that the Oscars and the Emmys might not honor. And the great thing is YOU get to vote for the winners!

Last year they honored such fan-favorites as Star Trek, Watchmen and Fringe with nominations, which I’m sure pleased many of you. Even if they still nominate some questionable movies, there’s no doubting that for the most part, the Scream Awards are a lot more in line with the majority of the movie going audience who pay to see movies purely to be entertained.

DVD/Blu-ray Breakdown: June 29th, 2010

This week’s DVD and Blu-ray releases offer up quite a bit of new releases for your end-of-the-month paycheck. But there is bigger news on the future of Blu-ray that should get all of you very excited.

The Back to the Future trilogy is one that many want to see on Blu-ray. On July 3rd, the original film will turn 25 years old. In celebration of that anniversary, Universal Studios Home Video has announced the Back to the Future trilogy will release on Blu-ray on October 26th, 2010.

There is an entire page of details on the Back to the Future release. The one that stands out is a new six-part retrospective documentary with cast, crew and even Steven Spielberg.

Breck Eisner Talks ‘Flash Gordon’

While Breck Eisner has been out on the road promoting his horror remake The Crazies (see our review), the director (and son of Hollywood bigwig Michael Eisner) has been talking up his potential film version of Alex Raymond’s Flash Gordon.

Eisner spoke to Movieline about the forthcoming film and while he seems to think that it’ll be made, it does appear that the film is at least a few years away – that is, if Eisner stays at the helm.

When asked by the magazine about Flash Gordon Eisner said:

The Crazies is a remake of George Romero’s 1973 film of the same name. I’ve never seen that version, so my review won’t be from the point of view of comparing it to the original. This remake takes place in a little prototypical American farm town called Ogden Marsh (Iowa). Within a couple of minutes of the film’s start, it’s clear that we’re in for not only some scary stuff, but a bit of subtle humor as well.

In yet another installment of our Screen Rant “Life Style of Convenience Initiative” today we offer you three new vidoes of three upcoming winter/spring movies.

On the menu for today’s video buffet are:

A new SFX featurette for the remake of George Romero’s The Crazies.
A new TV spot for the comic book movie The Losers.
A new clip from the action/comedy Date Night, starring Tina Fey and Steve Carell.

New ‘Crazies’ Trailer Ups The Creepy Factor

A couple of months ago, we brought you the first trailer for Breck Eisner directed remake of George Romero’s horror movie The Crazies. It was long on style and short on substance and the use of Gary Jules’ great song Mad World as a musical backdrop just didn’t really work. My guess is they choose it just based on the title and I seriously doubt the song will be on the soundtrack.

Now Eisner has released another trailer exclusively with Yahoo! Movies (you can head over there if you want to see the HD version).

No longer merely a punk band made up exclusively of my ex-girlfriends, Breck Eisner has remade the 1973 George Romero film, The Crazies. The movie follows the inhabitants of a sleepy lil’ Iowa town who go crazy and die. Why? You’ll have to watch the film to find out (or at least the original).

The Crazies stars Timothy Olyphant (Hitman) Radha Mitchell (Silent Hill) and Danielle Panabaker (Friday the 13th). George Romero, the director of the 1973 original, also brought the world the much-celebrated horror classic, Night of the Living Dead and all its subsequent sequels.

Timothy Olyphant is Crazy; an Arrested Development film is in development; Jason Bourne appears to just keep coming; Brian Grazer has stupid ideas for Magnum P.I and Mila Kunis reads The Book of Eli.

Box Office

It was predicted and it came to pass. Teen vampire film Twilight took a huge bite out of the box office this weekend with a massive gross of $73 million. The sequel(s) have already been given the green and it looks like this $37 million flick is going to be hugely profitable for fledgling studio Summit. Writer Stephanie Meyer, director Catherine Hardwicke and stars Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart should be pretty happy this weekend. I wonder if they’ve ever heard of type-casting?

Daniel Craig’s second James Bond outing should shoot up another $30 million over the weekend giving the 007 adventure a total gross of $110 million. By Monday morning Quantum of ...
