‘Cabin in the Woods’ Trailer: ‘Evil Dead’ By Way of Joss Whedon

Two long-delayed projects starring a pre-Thor Chris Hemsworth are slated to hit theaters in 2012. One is the Red Dawn remake and the other is The Cabin in the Woods, a horror movie co-written by Joss Whedon (The Avengers) and Cloverfield screenwriter Drew Goddard (the latter also made his directing debut on the film).

Goddard and Whedon previously worked together on the TV shows Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel; the former is (of course) well-known for turning many tried-and-true horror movie clichés on their head. As evidenced by the first trailer for Cabin in the Woods, the aforementioned writing duo are aiming to do something similar with their most recent collaboration.

‘Cabin in the Woods’ Finally Snags A Release Date

Generally, when a movie ends up having its release date delayed by years, it’s a sign that the studio behind it knows the film is a dud. In the case of The Cabin in the Woods, however, said delay can actually be chalked up to a combination of other factors.

Joss Whedon co-wrote Cabin in the Woods with Drew Goddard (Cloverfield), who also made his directorial debut on the picture. The film was at one point slated to hit theaters in October 2009, then it was delayed in order to be post-converted to 3D – and then it was shelved completely, due to MGM’s bankruptcy issues.

Lionsgate finally stepped in to distribute the horror pic earlier this year, and has now settled on an official release date. Unfortunately, for those who’ve been hyped to see ...

Lionsgate Visiting ‘Cabin in the Woods’; Summit May Play ‘Ender’s Game’

Two long-awaited film projects are finally prepped to make their way to your local theater in the future. One of these pics – The Cabin in the Woods – has been collecting dust after being shelved as a result of MGM’s bankruptcy, while the other – an Ender’s Game film adaptation – looks to at last become a reality after years of rumor mongering.

Lionsgate has stepped up to distribute Drew Goddard/Joss Whedon’s Cabin in the Woods flick, while Summit is in active talks to both co-finance and handle the U.S. distribution of director Gavin Hood’s Ender’s Game movie.

MGM Bankruptcy Stalls ‘Three Stooges’, ‘Robocop’ and More

MGM’s bankruptcy has already delayed the next Bond movie and left The Hobbit without a director, and as predicted, the subsequent fallout continues to claim victims.

We recently reported that the Red Dawn remake has been shelved indefinitely (it’s currently in post-production), and now we have updates on several other films that you won’t be seeing in the near future, thanks yet again to MGM’s money troubles.

Remember The Three Stooges movie that was suppossed to come out? The Farrelly Brothers were directing it, Sean Penn was circling the role of Larry, Benicio Del Toro had reportedly been circling Moe for a longtime… Even Jim Carey was rumored for Curly at one point.

Well, none of that matters now, the film is stalled. No Three Stooges anytime soon (some thought it would be out this year ...

Is Cabin In The Woods Really Getting Pushed Back A Year?

How long have we been waiting for Joss Whedon’s movie, The Cabin in the Woods? It doesn’t matter because we’re going to have to wait another year.

MGM has pushed back the opening of The Cabin in the Woods from February 5th, 2010 to January 14th, 2011 because they’ve decided to convert The Cabin in the Woods to 3-D.

MGM has been noted in saying that the early response to The Cabin in the Woods has been so good that they’ve made the decision to convert the film to 3D since 3D is a great platform for horror flicks.

Of course, if 3D is going to look as good as it could, it usually needs to be applied while they’re filming a project, not at post-production time. I’m not holding my breath on this.

This seems odd ...

Joss Whedon On Dollhouse, Cabin In The Woods & Goners

Joss Whedon chatted with Sci Fi Wire about a few things, all of which I’ve been looking forward to: Dollhouse, season 2. The Cabin in the Woods. Goners.

Joss said that in the premiere of Dollhouse‘s second season, we’ll get to see Echo cycle through a few imprints during an assignment. I can’t say anymore of what I do know without possible SPOILERS. So we’ll leave it at that.

As for being left alone by Fox to do what he wants with Dollhouse? Joss says he’s afraid to be alone (joke) but that the show is finally more of the collaborative effort between creator and network that it’s supposed to be.

In this weeks Mid Week Movie News Wrap Up features:

The Ghost just got very curious; 2012 is a long way away; Josh Whedon has A Cabin In The Woods and Tom and Jerry…well you guess the rest!

1. If you’re looking forward to 2012 - the film, not the year, then you’re going to have to wait a bit longer. Sony Pictures have moved the release from July 10 to November 13.

The Roland Emmerich disaster epic stars John Cusack, Amanda Peet and a wealth of others. The studio states that the reason for the change was a crowded market place.

2. Roman Polanski’s forthcoming Pierce Brosnan starrer The Ghost just went from interesting to curious. Tom Wilkinson and 80′s favorite James Belushi have joined the line up that includes Ewan McGregor, Kim Cattrall and Olivia William’s.

The political thriller starts shooting in Berlin on February 4^th.
