Here's our box office report for the weekend of April 20th – featuring new releases 'Think Like A Man' and 'The Lucky One' as well as returning films like 'The Hunger Games' and 'The Cabin In The Woods'.

Think Like A Man surpassed expectations at the box office over the weekend and banked a powerful $33 million. The ensemble film was directed by Tim Story, the man behind such hits as The Fantastic Four and Barbershop. The film was marketed mainly at an African-American audience, and therefore the best comparison for the film would be Tyler Perry’s efforts, although Think Like A Man (read our review) has bested all of Perry’s recent movies, with its opening weekend coming close to the lifetime gross of Good Deeds. What’s even more interesting is that the film covered its production budget on its opening day.

Zac Efron grabbed second place with The Lucky One. The weekend take for the drama was a surprisingly good $22.8 million. The success ...

Click to continue reading Weekend Box Office Wrap Up: April 22, 2012

Screen Rant’s Ben Kendrick reviews The Cabin in the Woods

The ups and downs of The Cabin in the Woods release delay had little to do with co-writer and producer Joss Whedon, or writer-turned-director Drew Goddard’s movie; rather, the horror genre hybrid was simply caught in the middle of the MGM Studios collapse. Despite a few big names being attached to the long-withheld project – Avengers star Chris Hemsworth and director Joss Whedon - does The Cabin in the Woods actually offer a fresh and enjoyable horror experience? Or is the film little more than a middle-of-the-road effort that could have easily been left on the shelf?

Much like Eli Craig’s tongue-in-cheek effort, Tucker & Dale vs. Evil, The Cabin in the Woods is far-from ...

Click to continue reading ‘The Cabin in the Woods’ Review

Next week’s release, The Cabin in the Woods, sees Joss Whedon (The Avengers) and Drew Goddard (writer of Cloverfield) try their hands at inverting the overdone slasher horror genre. Similarly, later this year, cult indie filmmaker Rian Johnson (Brick, The Brothers Bloom) will offer what sounds like a refreshing take on the time-travel sub-genre with Looper.

A Mondo-created one-sheet for Cabin the Woods has surfaced online, to help round out the film’s marketing campaign. Meanwhile, today’s Looper poster kicks off the film’s official promotional campaign – with a handful of trailer vignettes/previews due out early next week (yay?), to hype the release of the film’s first theatrical promo.

It’s hard to argue that March 2012 belonged to any movie other than The Hunger Games. March had its share of disappointments and successes but The Hunger Games really won the month, both critically and commercially. Breaking box office records, it could be one of the biggest movies of the year. April 2012 looks a little different: There are fewer blockbusters coming out – unless you count a 3D version of Titanic – but more smaller films that could surprise audiences and critics alike.

As we did in March, we’ve compiled a list of the biggest movies we’re looking forward to this month. There weren’t 10 movies that really stood out to us so we cut it down to “9 Movies We’re Looking Forward ...

Click to continue reading 9 Movies We’re Looking Forward To: April 2012

After being delayed a year in order to undergo a 3D post-conversion (which ended up not happening) and thereafter getting caught up in the quagmire that was MGM’s bankruptcy woes, Buffy the Vampire Slayer alumni Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard’s The Cabin in the Woods is finally ready to make its way into theaters.

We’ve rounded up the latest TV spot, behind-the-scenes clip, official stills, and poster for Whedon and Goddard’s post-modern riff on the slasher horror genre. Those of you who desire to see Cabin in the Woods with as little foreknowledge as possible need not fret, as the aforementioned promotional material does not divulge any of the film’s (supposedly) unprecedented twists and turns.

Cloverfield writer Drew Goddard and The Avengers helmer Joss Whedon aim to turn the horror genre on its head with next month’s The Cabin in the Woods (which the two co-wrote together and Goddard directed), while Sir Ridley Scott returns to the world(s) he created in Alien with this summer movie season’s much buzzed-about Prometheus – and today, we have new footage from each film to share with you.

The delayed Cabin in the Woods features a cast of attractive young people that includes Chris Hemsworth in his pre-Thor days, alongside such folk as Fran Kranz (Dollhouse), Anna Hutchinson (Go Girls), Kristen Connolly (As the World Turns), and Jesse Williams (Grey’s Anatomy) as an unsuspecting group of friends who head out to an isolated cabin in the woods for some fun.
The Cabin in the Woods is a long-delayed horror flick directed by Cloverfield screenwriter Drew Goddard and based on a script he co-penned with Buffy the Vampire Slayer creator (or, as he’s better known nowadays, The Avengers director) Joss Whedon.

Starring in the film are likes of such Whedon show alumni as Fran Kranz and Amy Acker (Dollhouse) alongside a pre-Thor Chris Hemsworth and several TV stars who’ve become bigger players since filming on The Cabin in the Woods took place a few years back.

Today, we have a new minute-long TV trailer for The Cabin in the Woods.
Two long-delayed projects starring a pre-Thor Chris Hemsworth are slated to hit theaters in 2012. One is the Red Dawn remake and the other is The Cabin in the Woods, a horror movie co-written by Joss Whedon (The Avengers) and Cloverfield screenwriter Drew Goddard (the latter also made his directing debut on the film).

Goddard and Whedon previously worked together on the TV shows Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel; the former is (of course) well-known for turning many tried-and-true horror movie clichés on their head. As evidenced by the first trailer for Cabin in the Woods, the aforementioned writing duo are aiming to do something similar with their most recent collaboration.

Lionsgate has finally settled on a release date for Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard's 'Cabin in the Woods'. Read on to find out when the 'horror movie to end all horror movies' will hit theaters.

Generally, when a movie ends up having its release date delayed by years, it’s a sign that the studio behind it knows the film is a dud. In the case of The Cabin in the Woods, however, said delay can actually be chalked up to a combination of other factors.

Joss Whedon co-wrote Cabin in the Woods with Drew Goddard (Cloverfield), who also made his directorial debut on the picture. The film was at one point slated to hit theaters in October 2009, then it was delayed in order to be post-converted to 3D – and then it was shelved completely, due to MGM’s bankruptcy issues.

Lionsgate finally stepped in to distribute the horror pic earlier this year, and has now settled on an official release date.
Two long-awaited film projects are finally prepped to make their way to your local theater in the future. One of these pics – The Cabin in the Woods – has been collecting dust after being shelved as a result of MGM’s bankruptcy, while the other – an Ender’s Game film adaptation – looks to at last become a reality after years of rumor mongering.

Lionsgate has stepped up to distribute Drew Goddard/Joss Whedon’s Cabin in the Woods flick, while Summit is in active talks to both co-finance and handle the U.S. distribution of director Gavin Hood’s Ender’s Game movie.

MGM’s bankruptcy has already delayed the next Bond movie and left The Hobbit without a director, and as predicted, the subsequent fallout continues to claim victims.

We recently reported that the Red Dawn remake has been shelved indefinitely (it’s currently in post-production), and now we have updates on several other films that you won’t be seeing in the near future, thanks yet again to MGM’s money troubles.

Remember The Three Stooges movie that was suppossed to come out?
How long have we been waiting for Joss Whedon’s movie, The Cabin in the Woods? It doesn’t matter because we’re going to have to wait another year.

MGM has pushed back the opening of The Cabin in the Woods from February 5th, 2010 to January 14th, 2011 because they’ve decided to convert The Cabin in the Woods to 3-D.

MGM has been noted in saying that the early response to The Cabin in the Woods has been so good that they’ve made the decision to convert the film to 3D since 3D is a great platform for horror flicks.

Of course, if 3D is going to look as good as it could, it usually needs to be applied while they’re filming a project, not at post-production time. I’m not holding my breath on this.

This seems odd to ...

Click to continue reading Is Cabin In The Woods Really Getting Pushed Back A Year?

Joss Whedon chatted with Sci Fi Wire about a few things, all of which I’ve been looking forward to: Dollhouse, season 2. The Cabin in the Woods. Goners.

Joss said that in the premiere of Dollhouse‘s second season, we’ll get to see Echo cycle through a few imprints during an assignment. I can’t say anymore of what I do know without possible SPOILERS. So we’ll leave it at that.

As for being left alone by Fox to do what he wants with Dollhouse? Joss says he’s afraid to be alone (joke) but that the show is finally more of the collaborative effort between creator and network that it’s supposed to be.

On Alexis Denisof coming to Dollhouse:

Oh, didn’t we mention that before? If you remember, they made note of it at Comic-Con. Alexis Denisof is ...

Click to continue reading Joss Whedon On Dollhouse, Cabin In The Woods & Goners
