The last time we reported on the completely unnecessary remake of Alfred Hitchcock’s classic The Birds, it looked to be dead on the ground, at least for the time being. Sadly, however, it appears the remake is still on its way, and it may have found a new director.

Casino Royale director, Martin Campbell, had been attached up until this point to direct The Birds. However, a little project called Green Lantern came along, and evidently The Birds got brushed to the side and almost forgot about. According to Pajiba, their inside source in The Hollywood Cog says that Campbell is no longer helming the $60 million project, which is set up at Michael Bay’s horror remake-prone production company, Platinum Dunes (the studio responsible for the remakes of A Nightmare on Elm ...

It was reported ages ago that Hollywood was adding The Birds to their list of remakes. The idea of remaking Alfred Hitchcock’s 1963 classic was hated by many (myself included) and for those people we have some good news:

The Birds remake is apparently dead, at least for now.

On the set of Platinum Dunes’ (Michael Bay’s production company) A Nightmare on Elm Street remake, producer Brian Fuller explained why the idea of a Birds remake presents problems for them – “We lay ourselves out there and get annihilated out there online all day long and [The Birds] just opens us up to a whole different level of annihilation.” In simple terms, Fuller says that, “…it doesn’t feel like that’s [The Birds is] up next for us.”

Remaking Alfred Hitchcock’s classic The Birds is a very bad idea.

I don’t care if Martin Campbell is directing (he’s the guy who did the most excellent and recent James Bond movie Casino Royale). I also don’t care if Naomi Watts is set to star.

This breaks 3 of the 5 rules of when it’s OK to remake a film:


-The original is terribly dated in either setting or pacing and style.

Um, no. The orginal was released in 1963, but it doesn’t feel dated. It feels like a look back in time. And although the pacing is slower than today’s movies, it’s not painfully slow – it’s just right at building the ...
