DVD/Blu-ray Breakdown: August 23, 2011

A handful of indie movies hit DVD and Blu-ray this week. Each of them earned praise from at least some faction of critics in the industry, marking this week as one of the better ones this month for home video releases.

Gamblers will be extremely happy to see both Rounders and Swingers on Blu-ray this week. Both films bring the world of gambling and casinos to life in fun and/or thrilling ways.

Disney is in the mix as well with the release of Bambi II on Blu-ray. Although it doesn’t live up to the legendary status of the original film, Bambi II has a solid fan base and Disney has given it a thorough Blu-ray release worthy of any animation fan’s eyes.

The Beaver, much like the film’s protagonist, has been hiding from the ugly realities of life for the last six months – after a seemingly never-ending font of bad press for star Mel Gibson.

A lot of early industry murmurs focused on the parallels between the actor and his equally self-destructive character in the film. The comparisons are certainly interesting but, without the controversy, can The Beaver stand on its own two feet as one of the better indie offerings in a summer chock-full of high profile superhero films?

Fortunately, the answer is yes. While it’s certainly hard to fully ignore some of the more on-the-nose moments of actor/character crossover (specifically a disheveled-looking Gibson pouring Vodka on a television screen), The Beaver still manages to direct the audience away ...

Weekend Movie News Wrap Up: May 8th, 2011

This week:

Thor hammers the competition; cool kids sign up to play The Hunger Games; Stephen Collins wants to adopt one of the Three Stooges; don’t stop believin’ in a 3D film version of Glee; add three more names to the dinner list for Piranha 3DD; get ready for a Seven Samurai remake; and a trio of funny ladies sign on for Will Ferrell’s Bachelorette.

Box Office

Marvel’s Thor grossed an estimated $66 million in the U.S. during its opening weekend. While the God of Thunder’s solo outing failed to reach Iron Man levels of success, it still managed to exceed Incredible Hulk‘s $55.4 million opening – though that was undoubtedly in part due to Thor being screened in the 2D, 3D, and IMAX 3D format. Props to Marvel for its successful marketing strategy, all the same.

To is Wednesday and it’s time for our second installment of the Video Clip Roundup. We have a slew of good clips for you today, including a few good movies opening in the month of April (see our Massive 2011 Movie Preview) and as the release dates get closer, the studios have begun pumping out more and more content to promote their films.

Mel Gibson and ‘The Beaver’ Get Delayed

One of the oddest movies set to hit theaters in 2011 is the Jodie Foster-directed The Beaver, which stars the ever-controversial Mel Gibson as a man who utilizes a toy beaver puppet in order to get his life back on track.

After Gibson’s real life shenanigans made it a dubious decision for the studio to release The Beaver, Summit Entertainment finally bit the bullet just before last Christmas and set a March 23, 2011 release date for the movie. However, it has just been revealed that the movie will now hit theaters two months later than before.

Deadline reports that Summit has decided to delay the release of The Beaver, with the comedy/drama now opening in limited release on May 6th, and opening up for a wider release two weeks later.

‘The Beaver’ Will Reach Theaters In March 2011

The Beaver – a story about a woebegone man who begins to reassemble the shambles of his once-thriving life with the assistance of a toy puppet – sounds… interesting and quirky enough in its own right, but the fact that it stars Mel Gibson very much prevented the film from reaching theaters this year.

Now Summit Entertainment has at last set an official release date for actress/director Jodie Foster’s Beaver movie, which will begin a limited theatrical run on March 23rd, 2011 and then expand wider on April 8th.

While The Beaver is very much an unconventional dramedy in its own right, Gibson’s public meltdown over the past couple of years has discouraged studios from signing on to distribute the film. Things started to turn around for the project a few months back, when Gibson’s performance

Trailer For ‘The Beaver’ Starring Mel Gibson [Updated]

The Beaver has been in the can for quite a while, with Summit Entertainment trying to figure out a release strategy for the quirky drama starring controversy lightning rod, Mel Gibson.

The Jodie Foster-directed film was stuck in release date limbo ever since Gibson’s personal life hit the tabloid headlines earlier this year. Since then, the studio mulled over various release possibilities – including dumping the film straight to DVD.

Now, it would appear that cooler heads prevailed and the film is now set for a Spring release a promotional image has been released and a new trailer is on the way.

Mel Gibson has not had a good year, no matter how you look at it. He was hit with allegations of physical abuse from his now ex-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva earlier this year; a recording of Gibson’s obscenity and sexual/racial epithet-filled phone conversation with Grigorieva was later leaked to the press; and the actor’s anti-Semitic rant from 2006 has now been brought back into the limelight as a result of all this new controversy.

Gibson was set to make his return to acting this year with The Beaver, a satirical film in which he plays a businessman who finds peace in life by wearing a beaver puppet on his hand. Jodie Foster directed the feature, which has yet to secure a theatrical release date.

A couple of days ago The Hollywood Reporter published an article entitled Can Mel Gibson Still Draw a Crowd?. The piece weighs up the pros and cons of Mel Gibson’s return to acting after a seven year absence. As Screen Rant’s most vocal Mel Gibson supporter the article caught my attention and made me ponder that question. The article also mentions various films that Gibson has turned down over the last few years – some of which are quite surprising.

Mel Gibson Shows His ‘Beaver’ In Public!

The jokes…ahem… come thick and fast when talking about Jodie Foster’s The Beaver (which she directs and co-stars in). Mel Gibson stars as a depressed man who communicates through a hand puppet of the titular creature (see pic above).

The dramedy has now started shooting and the first images of Gibson on set with his hand inserted into his famous co-star are now online – I’m talking about the puppet! Get your head out of the gutter.

Well…

They images depict Mel Gibson wearing a beaver hand puppet and that is enough for me!

It’s been too long since Mad Mel graced our screens, and if he needs a crazy puppet appendage to help him make that return then that’s okay by me. Although, if anyone else calls Jodie Foster a crazy appendage then I won’t be happy. ZING!

Weekend Movie News Wrap Up: September 13, 2009

It’s Sunday again and that means Wrap Up time.

This week:

Tyler Perry does Bad at the top of the box office; Timothy Dalton plays with Toys; Anton Yelchin gets some Beaver; Max Ryan gets involved in Sex and Eva Green and Ewan McGregor have the Last Word.

Box Office

I Can Do Bad All By Myself topped the box office with $25 million. While it’s not the best gross for a Tyler Perry opening it does show that he has an audience that shows up.

The Tim Burton-produced 9 had a better than expected debut with $15.5 million.

Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds was third with another $6.5 million. With a total gross of $104 million the film has now become Tarantino’s highest grossing film – unadjusted of course.

Sandra Bullock’s All About Steve was fourth with $5.8 million. The film’s cumulative gross currently stands ...

The Basterds have landed at the top of the box office; Karl Urban takes a bite out of Priest; Summit attempts to grab Jodie Foster’s Beaver; Rosario Dawson boards Unstoppable; The Twilight Saga: Eclipse begins; Pandorum is pushed back and is it a trick or a treat for Trick r’ Treat?

Box Office

Quentin Tarantino scored the biggest opening of his career with Inglourious Basterds. The Brad Pitt film shot up an impressive $37 million over the weekend giving The Weinstein Company a much needed financial boost. The R-rated Nazi killing epic will have a chance of cracking $100 million if word of mouth is good.

District 9 dropped less than 50% this weekend after banking an estimated $18.9 million. With $73 million already in the bag it looks like this $30 million film will be very profitable.

Mel Gibson To Star In Jodie Foster’s ‘Beaver’

Fifteen years ago Mel Gibson and Jodie Foster starred together in Maverick. Now the pair are set to reunite in The Beaver.

It is believed that Foster will also direct the quirky drama that is expected to shoot this Fall in New York.

According to Variety:

“Gibson will play a depressed man who finds solace in wearing a beaver hand-puppet. On top of helming, Foster will play the role of the man’s wife.

The budget for the film is $18-19 million, which is pretty economical when you consider that Gibson and Foster could conceivably each ask for that kind of salary when making a studio blockbuster. Financing for the film isn’t in place yet; it could be made independently or shopped to a studio now that the two A-listers are attached.

This week:

Wolverine is Number 1! Keanu Reeves goes to Cartagena; Marcus Nispell captains The Last Voyage of Demeter; we learn about The Pale Horsemen; Jim Carrey likes The Beaver; Natalie Portman, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Rainn Wilson know Hesher and three more people jump into the Hot Tub Time Machine; And last but not least, The Road finally gets a new release date.

Box Office

Hugh Jackman proved that he’s still a draw as Wolverine as his X-Men franchise spin-off X-Men Origins: Wolverine clawed up somewhere in the region of $85-90 million over the weekend. The weekend take was pretty much in line with expectations, but the road ahead might be tricky as reviews weren’t particularly great so there might be a huge drop-off next weekend which is usual for this type of movie.
