‘Avengers’ vs. ‘Amazing Spider-Man’: Marvel Movie Trailer Showdown

This week has brought us two big superhero movie trailers, with The Avengers Super Bowl trailer sending fans into frenzy, followed by the new Amazing Spider-Man trailer - which has come out of the gate (literally) swinging, and managed to overcome some of the negative opinion that the reboot was initially facing.

In fact, The Amazing Spider-Man has impressed so much that we’ve begun to hear whispers here and there that the Spider-Man trailer did a better job than The Avengers Super Bowl trailer, and ultimately made the Spider-Man reboot look like the better movie.

‘The Avengers’ Super Bowl Commercial [Extended Version]

We are a day short of three months until The Avengers opens in theaters, giving fans what they’ve been anticipating since The Incredible Hulk and Iron Man proved Marvel Studios could deliver big-budget, quality epics on their own. For casual moviegoers, there’s not been much to go on thus far, with Marvel having released only one version of The Avengers trailer, a trailer which revealed very little about the film’s story other than the fact it involves all of Marvel Studios’ characters who’ve had their own movie already.

That changes today with Marvel purchasing one of the extremely expensive time slots during the Super Bowl to showcase The Avengers to the world with brand new footage. It paid off with Iron Man back in 2008, will it work again for The Avengers?

‘The Avengers’: New Character Banners, Loki Image & Hulk Toy

Marvel is expected to release new material that gets fans pumped (ie. new footage) for The Avengers during the film’s full Super Bowl XLVI TV spot. Such a tasty morsel would be all the more welcome, while comic book aficionados continue to wait for the next full theatrical trailer – and, more importantly, the actual movie, which arrives in theaters exactly three months to the day (of writing this).

However, in the meantime, we have a couple of new Avengers character banners, which we’ve also separated into their individual super-warrior components, for you to view – along with another official still of Tom Hiddleston as Loki from the film, and a pic of the action figure representation of Avenger‘s The Incredible Hulk.

We recently posted about a live tweeting event for The Avengers, in which fans could take to Twitter and tweet back in forth with Avengers director Joss Whedon and select members of the cast – followed by a sneak peek at The Avengers Super Bowl trailer, which will debut in full during Super Bowl XLVI.

Teaser For ‘The Avengers’ Super Bowl XLVI Commercial

Believe it or not, The Avengers will be in theaters around the world in just over three months. Despite the proximity of its release, fans still haven’t seen much from the movie outside of The Avengers trailer which only showcased characters introduced in Marvel Studios’ previous films that set the foundation for the team-up epic.

Director Joss Whedon, joined by fan-favorites Clark Gregg, Samuel L. Jackson and Tom Hiddleston, took to Twitter today to partake in a half-hour online event, answering questions about The Avengers from fans. New ‘Avengers’ Images Feature Off-Duty Superheroes

A synergistic marketing campaign for The Avengers is just getting underway, but fans have already been promised sick goods, such as a pristine collectible statuette of Iron Man’s Mark VII armor, toyline versions of iconic S.H.I.E.L.D. transports like the Quinjet – and a snazzy 3D poster that features the eponymous team in battle form.

Today’s bit of Avengers promotion comes in the form of five new images, officially unveiled by Marvel. A chunk of these previously popped up online in scanned form, as they are included in a forthcoming subscribers edition of Empire Magazine – the same one that features Kevin Feige’s provocative comments concerning just who The Avengers‘ secret baddies are – but, fortunately, we now have high-definition, non-bootlegged versions to share.

‘Captain America 2′ Could Begin Production By Late 2012

With The Avengers owning 2012 all to itself – along with Iron Man 3 and Thor 2 having already staked out the separate halves of 2013 as their own – it’s been assumed that Captain America 2 is the most likely candidate to snag one of the two 2014 release dates that Marvel Studios has already claimed.

According to Captain America costar Neal McDonough, who plays the bowler-capped Dum Dum Dugan, filming on the (currently) director-less sequel is slated to begin before 2012 comes to a close. Such a move would both pave the way for Cap’s next solo venture to reach theaters by 2014 – and, set the stage for production to begin on one of the many other single Marvel character-centric vehicles being developed right now.

One fringe benefit to having Iron Man featured in a Marvel movie (aside from the obvious advantage of having Robert Downey Jr.’s all-encompassing charisma) is that we get to see yet another new Iron Man armor design on the big screen!

Each new upgrade – from the suitcase-compact Mark V to the triangle chest piece Mark VI – has been better than the last, so fans are going to have high expectations for the Iron Man armor(s?) that will be featured in Joss Whedon’s The Avengers.

Kevin Feige Hints at ‘The Avengers’ Mystery Villains

Speculation about who exactly Loki (Tom Hiddleston) recruits to serve as his army in The Avengers has literally been ongoing for years now.

Everything from recurring rumors to images from abandoned video game tie-ins have pointed to the culprits being extraterrestrials that are all-too-familiar to hardcore Marvel comic books fans. Similarly, a previously-unveiled Avengers toyline press release seemingly revealed that another recognizable antagonist could also be making an appearance in the film.

President of Marvel Studios production Kevin Feige recently set the record straight (or did he?) during a talk with Empire Magazine. It goes without saying: if you do not want to be spoiled about who is, and who is NOT going to be teaming up with Loki in The Avengers, STOP READING NOW.

Idris Elba Talks ‘Thor 2′, ‘The Avengers’, and James Bond Rumors

Immediately following his win at the 2012 Golden Globes ceremony, ubiquitous fan-favorite Idris Elba was hit up by journalists wanting to know more about his upcoming film schedule, which could possibly include both Marvel’s Thor 2 and The Avengers, as well as the James Bond franchise somewhere down the road (if rumor mongering is anything to go by).

‘The Avengers’ Will Be Told From Captain America’s Perspective

It’s easy to joke about how the teaser trailer for The Avengers makes Joss Whedon’s superhero ensemble look like another Iron Man movie, considering that Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) got all the snappy lines and as much, if not more, screen-time than anyone else. Downey can dominate a scene like few others, so there’s legitimate reason to be concerned that he might overshadow his peers in Whedon’s film.

How then do you take Downey’s charisma into account and prevent that from happening? Well, if you’re Whedon, you simply let The Avengers be told from someone else’s perspective.
