Halloween is that one time of the year in which most everyone loves to be scared. While the devil’s favorite holiday usually comes with the release of many terrifying (and some not so terrifying) movies (see: Paranormal Activity), the truth of the matter is that movies, in general, have the power to get our hearts pumping, our blood curdling, our skin laced with goosebumps and our breath suddenly missing from our lungs. Movies can scare or thrill us any time of year, but Halloween season is when we really seek out that thrill.

New Posters: ‘Sherlock Holmes 2,’ ‘Tower Heist,’ ‘The Grey,’ & ‘Texas Chainsaw Massacre’

Hollywood has opened the marketing floodgates this morning with new trailers for Sherlock Holmes 2 and Piranha 3DD as well as a myriad of new posters for an especially diverse set of upcoming films.

Check out the one sheets and banners for the aforementioned Sherlock Holmes sequel, entitled A Game of Shadows, the Ben Stiller ensemble comedy Tower Heist, the indie action-drama, The Grey, starring Liam Neeson, and the next bloody installment in the Texas Chainsaw Massacre series.

Harry Potter works his magic for a record-breaking opening weekend; Jonathan Liebesman hails Caesar; catch a first look at Colin Farrell in Total Recall; Joe Carnahan’s The Grey starts a war; get ready for Bad Santa 2… and 3? Sam Raimi’s Oz gets a logo; Clint Eastwood’s son Scott faces the good, the bad and the ugly in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Vin Diesel is Unknown.

Box Office

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2 waved its wand and unleashed some serious magic at the box office over the weekend. The final installment in the decade-old franchise obliterated records with its debut grossing an astonishing $168.6 million. Harry Potter (read our Deathly Hallows, Part 2 review) grossed $92 million on Friday (including midnight showings which brought in $43.5 million) giving it the largest single day gross in history.

‘Lone Ranger’ & ‘Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3D’ Snag Female Leads

Here’s an odd mix of projects that look to have cast pivotal female roles: Walt Disney Picture’s Lone Ranger and Lionsgate’s The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3D.

English actress Ruth Wilson is negotiating to portray Rebecca in the Lone Ranger movie, which will also feature Johnny Depp, Armie Hammer, and possibly Tom Wilkinson as well. Meanwhile, Lost starlet Tania Raymonde has been cast as another potential Leatherface victim in the new Chainsaw Massacre flick.

Wilson has primarily worked in the television medium, starring in shows like Suburban Shootout and AMC’s updated take on the classic cult series, The Prisoner. She also landed a Golden Globe nomination for her work on a 2006 Masterpiece Theater Jane Eyre mini-series, and recently appeared opposite Idris Elba in the BBC’s Luther.

Casting Roundup: ‘Oz’, ‘Pacific Rim’, ‘Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3D’

Today’s casting news roundup concerns three actress that have (in turn) signed on for Disney’s prequel-ish Oz: The Great and Powerful, Lionsgate’s sequel-ish Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3D, and Warner Bros.’ original flick, Pacific Rim.

Sam Raimi will commence with principal photography on his Wizard of Oz film in Michigan before the month is out. The expensive fantasy project will reunite the director with his Spider-Man trilogy star James Franco (as the young “wizard of Oz”) and his longtime musical composer, Danny Elfman.

Heat Vision has learned that Abagail Spencer is the latest addition to the cast of Oz. The actress, perhaps best known for her turn as Suzanne Farrell in the third season of Mad Men, will also be appearing onscreen in Cowboys & ...

‘The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3D’ Plot Details

Last month, Lionsgate announced that John Luessenhop (Takers) was in talks to direct The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3D – and that the film would be a direct sequel to Tobe Hooper’s 1974 original, rather than the flashy 2003 remake from Platinum Dunes. Producer Carl Mazzocone indicated that he wanted to “re-conceive” the Leatherface character for a contemporary audience – so while it’s linked to the first film in the long-running series, the hope is that this interpretation will also serve as the foundation for a new franchise.

Lionsgate Unleashes ‘The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3D’

Tobe Hooper’s 1974 cult-classic The Texas Chainsaw Massacre remains one of the most controversial and influential additions to the horror genre. Partially inspired by the real-life exploits of notorious serial killer Ed Gein, the film introduced audiences to the character of Leatherface – a cannibalistic madman who wears the skin of his victims and tortures anyone unlucky enough to cross paths with him and the rest of his inbred family.

Three sequels followed the original TCM, with each installment taking a significant dip in quality. In 2003, Michael Bay’s production company Platinum Dunes began their streak of churning out flashy remakes of landmark horror films with a new version of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, directed by Marcus Nispel (Conan The Barbarian).

Weekend Movie News Wrap Up: October 11, 2009

This week:

Vince Vaughn Retreats to the top of the box office; another comic book adaptation makes it way up the Gravel road to the big screen; Michael Bay kills The Texas Chainsaw Massacre; Ryan Reynolds hitches a ride with Motorcade and New Line needs a Vacation – but will Chevy Chase be invited?

Box Office

Swingers duo Vince Vaughn and Jon Favreau landed in the top spot with Couples Retreat. The comedy snatched an impressive $35 million from movie-goers despite bad reviews.

Woody Harrelson had to settle for second place with Zombieland. The horror-comedy took $15 million from Friday to Monday, dropping a decent 39% – it looks like the film has a chance of hitting $100 million.

Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs banked another $12 million for third place. With $96 million in the bank it looks like Meatballs are going to be the order of the day.
