Sequels are definitely a mixed bag in terms of quality, but one of their advantages is an audience’s immediate connection and empathy towards a familiar and (hopefully) beloved character. No one really cares what’s inside the Temple of Doom or where the Holy Grail is hidden, they just want to go on another adventure with Indiana Jones.

Our interest and investment in these characters and their worlds often percolates in the years (or sometimes decades) between installments, and the opportunity to revisit them is often greeted with unmatched fervor – which makes it enormously disappointing as you watch a film unfold and realize that while the character on the big screen may look and sound the way you remember, something is… missing.

Justin Lin Drops ‘Terminator 5′ For ‘Fast and Furious 6′

For a while it looked like Justin Lin was about to become involved with multiple blockbuster franchises, seeing how he was set to helm not only Fast and Furious 6, but also Summit’s Highlander reboot and Terminator 5 – not to mention, he was among the filmmakers previously shortlisted as potentials to direct Die Hard 5.

Lin ultimately passed on the fifth Die Hard, left Highlander (which now has a new director), and is pressing ahead full force with the sixth installment in the Fast and the Furious series. However, that move has also forced him to abandon his Terminator duties… for the time being.

Thanks to his work on the crowd-pleasing, $600 million grossing, smash hit that is Fast Five, director Justin Lin has become one of the most sought-after filmmakers out there. Besides his being up to direct Fast and Furious 6, Lin is also working behind-the-scenes on Terminator 5 and the Highlander remake – not to mention, he was recently shortlisted as a potential to helm Die Hard 5 as well.

Lin is now speaking out about all the aforementioned franchise titles, revealing which ones he’s actually involved with – and updating their current status.

Whether it is an android or autonomous robot, the only rules for this list are that they can speak and they have a dedicated physical form (i.e. they are not a computer program like HAL 9000, KITT or S1m0ne). With those two guidelines in place, we present our list of robots below, ordered alphabetically.

‘Terminator 5′ Update: Pre-Production, New Plot & Casting Rumors

Given the public hoopla surrounding his recent divorce and revealed infidelity, it wasn’t a real shock when Arnold Schwarzenegger decided to delay his return to acting. Although he had become associated with projects like Cry Macho and The Last Stand by that time, it was the seemingly Schwarzenegger-centric Terminator 5 that looked to be all but indefinitely delayed due to the aging action star/former governor’s retreat from the limelight.

However, that is apparently not the case. Megan Ellison’s Annapurna Films managed to secure the screen rights for two more Terminator movies – and the company is reportedly moving ahead with the fifth installment in the sci-fi franchise, in spite of Schwarzenegger’s departure.

Only three months after he confirmed his return to acting, Arnold Schwarzenegger has announced that he’ll be postponing his big screen comeback.

The former Governor of California’s personal life has obviously undergone a bit of an upheaval these last few days and he’s understandably decided to sort through those matters before committing to any of the numerous film projects that he was involved with.

Schwarzenegger recently chose the drama Cry Macho as his first post-gubernatorial effort and production was scheduled to begin as early as this summer. He was also developing a Governator animated series, comic book, and 3D feature film with Stan Lee (quite frankly, we may have a dodged a bullet with that one).

Annapurna Films Wins ‘Terminator’ Rights

Terminator 5 has been steadily moving closer to becoming a reality ever since Arnold Schwarzenegger officially got back into the acting game. The former politician (and action movie icon) is currently set to appear in a fifth Terminator pic, should it happen – with Fast and the Furious franchise helmer Justin Lin attached to call the shots on the project.

Rumors about other original Terminator cast members also being attached to a fifth installment in the blockbuster sci-fi series began circling a couple of weeks ago. However, Lin quickly dismissed said speculation, insisting that he and Schwarzenegger were the only people officially working on the film.

Justin Lin: ‘Terminator 5′ Won’t Feature Original Cast Reunion

Word that multiple stars of the original Terminator movie, not just Arnold Schwarzenegger, were officially attached to Terminator 5 prompted speculation that the film would essentially amount to a partial reboot of the sci-fi franchise – a series that, due to its overuse of time-travel as a plot point, has technically already “rebooted” itself several times in the past.

Director Justin Lin has now dismissed the rumor that stars like Linda Hamilton are on-board to reunite with Schwarzenegger in the new Terminator flick; however, he hasn’t denied the possibility that the series continuity could be “rebooted” again in the (for now, still theoretical) fifth film.

“I’ll be back” jokes spread like wildfire throughout the movie blogosphere when word got out that Arnold Schwarzenegger is officially attached to star in Terminator 5. If current insider information is to be believed (always a tricky proposition), then the ex-California governor won’t be the only familiar face returning for the fifth entry in the Terminator franchise.

A reportedly legit source is saying the “entire original cast” is attached to the Terminator 5 pitch that is currently making the rounds. Given the nature of the Terminator mythology, that begs the question: Is this new entry being fashioned as a partial reboot of the franchise?

[UPDATE: Schwarzenegger has announced that he's putting all of his upcoming film projects on hold.]

I’m going to restrain myself from making the obvious “I’ll be back…” joke, but suffice it to say – it looks like Arnold Schwarzenegger is indeed returning to the Terminator franchise.

The development of a fifth theatrical outing gained considerable momentum after Schwarzenegger announced his intentions to return to acting back in February.

The hedge fund company Pacificor acquired the rights to the Terminator series last year and it was made clear that they were under no obligation to continue on with the trilogy that Terminator Salvation was intended to start. At this point, it’s still unclear which direction future installments might take or how they’re going to navigate through the increasingly convoluted continuity.

Justin Lin’s revelation that he has discussed a fifth Terminator movie with Arnold Schwarzenegger certainly got fans riled up last week. So the potential involvement of the Fast and the Furious franchise helmer with Terminator 5 raises an interesting question: does that mean Lin’s pal and frequent leading man, Vin Diesel, could appear in the film too?

This is, of course, nothing more than preliminary talk and speculation since Terminator 5 with Lin as the director isn’t even a “thing” at this point. But still – would his Fast Five star be along for the ride (sorry, bad pun), if it happens?

Justin Lin Confirms ‘Terminator 5′ Talk With Schwarzenegger

Now that Arnold Schwarzenegger is back (sorry, couldn’t resist) to acting, rumors about Terminator 5 happening are as popular as ever. The (former) action star previously confirmed that the Terminator franchise is one of several that he’s been approached to revisit, but did not elaborate on how substantial said talks about the series are.

Now Fast and the Furious franchise helmer Justin Lin has spoken out on the subject, revealing that he and Schwarzenegger have held multiple discussions about Terminator 5. Whether anything will come of it, however, isn’t something Lin is so sure about.

Syfy Spring Lineup: SGU Ends, ‘Sanctuary’ Returns & Terminator Reruns

SyFy released their spring programming lineup on to the press today. Highlights include the last half-season of Stargate: Universe, new episodes of Sanctuary, and a complete rerun of both seasons of Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles.

Stargate: Universe will air its last ten episodes starting March 7th. The second spin-off of Stargate: SG1, Syfy declined to renew SGU for a third season last December. At the end of the half-season in the fall, the show was down to a mere 1 million views an episode. Much to the dismay of its fans, the end of SGU will leave television without new Stargate franchise episodes for the first time in fourteen years.

Back in the 90s, if you said Arnold Schwarzenegger was going to enter politics, you’d be considered a fool, and an unfunny one at that. A decade later he become the Governor of California.

Politics aside, the worst part about about Schwarzenegger’s change in career aspirations was that he was taken out of the film industry for a full seven years and we’ve sincerely missed him during that time. Fortunately for us, and moviegoers around the world, Arnold Schwarzenegger is ready to make his return to acting!

On his own Twitter account, only an hour ago, Arnold Schwarzenegger tweeted the following message:

‘Terminator 3000′ Gets Terminated in Rights Battle

I think the word “Oops” is the only thing to say with regard to the PR nightmare descending over Hannover House and Red Bear Entertainment – following the announcement they’d be producing a $70 million animated Terminator film, titled Terminator 3000.

There’s just one problem: Terminator rights holder Pacificor, LLC wasn’t contacted and wasn’t too happy to hear that a new Terminator project was announced without their approval.

Pacificor, LLC has sent a swift cease and desist letter to Hannover House and Red Bear Entertainment stating:

“We recently became aware through various online media reports that Hannover House, purportedly a division of Target Development Group, Inc. (“TDGI”), entered into a purported feature film development venture with a Vancouver based entity, Red Bear Entertainment, for “Teminator 3000” an animated feature film based upon the characters ...

Terminator 3000 On The Way [Updated]

[Update: Pacificor LLC, the Terminator franchise rights holder, has halted production on Terminator 3000 - citing numerous rights violations.]

The good news is that there is a new Terminator movie on the way.

The bad news is that it’s an animated 3D spin-off from the franchise titled Terminator 3000 and not a live-action sequel to the films which originally starred Arnold Schwarzenegger or the Sam Worthington/Christian Bale mash-up in last year’s Terminator Salvation.
