Justin Lin Drops ‘Terminator 5′ For ‘Fast and Furious 6′

For a while it looked like Justin Lin was about to become involved with multiple blockbuster franchises, seeing how he was set to helm not only Fast and Furious 6, but also Summit’s Highlander reboot and Terminator 5 – not to mention, he was among the filmmakers previously shortlisted as potentials to direct Die Hard 5.

Lin ultimately passed on the fifth Die Hard, left Highlander (which now has a new director), and is pressing ahead full force with the sixth installment in the Fast and the Furious series. However, that move has also forced him to abandon his Terminator duties… for the time being.

Justin Lin Updates: ‘Fast & Furious 6′, ‘Terminator 5′, ‘Highlander’

Thanks to his work on the crowd-pleasing, $600 million grossing, smash hit that is Fast Five, director Justin Lin has become one of the most sought-after filmmakers out there. Besides his being up to direct Fast and Furious 6, Lin is also working behind-the-scenes on Terminator 5 and the Highlander remake – not to mention, he was recently shortlisted as a potential to helm Die Hard 5 as well.

Lin is now speaking out about all the aforementioned franchise titles, revealing which ones he’s actually involved with – and updating their current status.

‘Terminator 5′ Update: Pre-Production, New Plot & Casting Rumors

Given the public hoopla surrounding his recent divorce and revealed infidelity, it wasn’t a real shock when Arnold Schwarzenegger decided to delay his return to acting. Although he had become associated with projects like Cry Macho and The Last Stand by that time, it was the seemingly Schwarzenegger-centric Terminator 5 that looked to be all but indefinitely delayed due to the aging action star/former governor’s retreat from the limelight.

However, that is apparently not the case. Megan Ellison’s Annapurna Films managed to secure the screen rights for two more Terminator movies – and the company is reportedly moving ahead with the fifth installment in the sci-fi franchise, in spite of Schwarzenegger’s departure.

Only three months after he confirmed his return to acting, Arnold Schwarzenegger has announced that he’ll be postponing his big screen comeback.

The former Governor of California’s personal life has obviously undergone a bit of an upheaval these last few days and he’s understandably decided to sort through those matters before committing to any of the numerous film projects that he was involved with.

Schwarzenegger recently chose the drama Cry Macho as his first post-gubernatorial effort and production was scheduled to begin as early as this summer. He was also developing a Governator animated series, comic book, and 3D feature film with Stan Lee (quite frankly, we may have a dodged a bullet with that one).

Terminator 5 has been steadily moving closer to becoming a reality ever since Arnold Schwarzenegger officially got back into the acting game. The former politician (and action movie icon) is currently set to appear in a fifth Terminator pic, should it happen – with Fast and the Furious franchise helmer Justin Lin attached to call the shots on the project.

Rumors about other original Terminator cast members also being attached to a fifth installment in the blockbuster sci-fi series began circling a couple of weeks ago. However, Lin quickly dismissed said speculation, insisting that he and Schwarzenegger were the only people officially working on the film.

Justin Lin: ‘Terminator 5′ Won’t Feature Original Cast Reunion

Word that multiple stars of the original Terminator movie, not just Arnold Schwarzenegger, were officially attached to Terminator 5 prompted speculation that the film would essentially amount to a partial reboot of the sci-fi franchise – a series that, due to its overuse of time-travel as a plot point, has technically already “rebooted” itself several times in the past.

Director Justin Lin has now dismissed the rumor that stars like Linda Hamilton are on-board to reunite with Schwarzenegger in the new Terminator flick; however, he hasn’t denied the possibility that the series continuity could be “rebooted” again in the (for now, still theoretical) fifth film.

“I’ll be back” jokes spread like wildfire throughout the movie blogosphere when word got out that Arnold Schwarzenegger is officially attached to star in Terminator 5. If current insider information is to be believed (always a tricky proposition), then the ex-California governor won’t be the only familiar face returning for the fifth entry in the Terminator franchise.

A reportedly legit source is saying the “entire original cast” is attached to the Terminator 5 pitch that is currently making the rounds. Given the nature of the Terminator mythology, that begs the question: Is this new entry being fashioned as a partial reboot of the franchise?

[UPDATE: Schwarzenegger has announced that he's putting all of his upcoming film projects on hold.]

I’m going to restrain myself from making the obvious “I’ll be back…” joke, but suffice it to say – it looks like Arnold Schwarzenegger is indeed returning to the Terminator franchise.

The development of a fifth theatrical outing gained considerable momentum after Schwarzenegger announced his intentions to return to acting back in February.

The hedge fund company Pacificor acquired the rights to the Terminator series last year and it was made clear that they were under no obligation to continue on with the trilogy that Terminator Salvation was intended to start. At this point, it’s still unclear which direction future installments might take or how they’re going to navigate through the increasingly convoluted continuity.

Justin Lin’s revelation that he has discussed a fifth Terminator movie with Arnold Schwarzenegger certainly got fans riled up last week. So the potential involvement of the Fast and the Furious franchise helmer with Terminator 5 raises an interesting question: does that mean Lin’s pal and frequent leading man, Vin Diesel, could appear in the film too?

This is, of course, nothing more than preliminary talk and speculation since Terminator 5 with Lin as the director isn’t even a “thing” at this point. But still – would his Fast Five star be along for the ride (sorry, bad pun), if it happens?

Justin Lin Confirms ‘Terminator 5′ Talk With Schwarzenegger

Now that Arnold Schwarzenegger is back (sorry, couldn’t resist) to acting, rumors about Terminator 5 happening are as popular as ever. The (former) action star previously confirmed that the Terminator franchise is one of several that he’s been approached to revisit, but did not elaborate on how substantial said talks about the series are.

Now Fast and the Furious franchise helmer Justin Lin has spoken out on the subject, revealing that he and Schwarzenegger have held multiple discussions about Terminator 5. Whether anything will come of it, however, isn’t something Lin is so sure about.

While the dust is still settling from the sale of the Terminator franchise rights, people are wondering what the new owners, the hedge fund company Pacificor, will do about moving the franchise forward.

A few more Terminator movies are almost certainly on the horizon (would Pacificor spend $30 million + for the rights if they weren’t going to use them?), and fans are already worrying whether the franchise will undergo some kind of reboot, or continue on with the plot elements introduced in Terminator Salvation, including the proposed storylines that were pitched for Salvation‘s sequels.

More Drama in the Terminator Auction (McG Out?)

Our friends over at /Film picked up on a nice article in the LA Times delving into the recent auction of the Terminator franchise rights.

Earlier this week we reported that the rights to the Terminator franchise were ultimately sold to Pacificor – the same hedge fund that backed previous Terminator owners the Halcyon Group, and (allegedly) maneuvered Halcyon into its current state of bankruptcy (For details on how they pulled that off, go HERE).

Sony and Lionsgate – the two biggest bidders in the auction – were furious that Pacificor ended up with the rights, and went so far as to claim that the sale had been rigged in a backroom deal between Halcyon and Pacificor prior to auction.

After months of speculation over who would become the new owner of the Terminator franchise, we finally have an answer. And it isn’t the studio you think it is.

Last we reported on the auction for the rights to any Terminator movies, TV shows and any spin-offs, Sony (who handled international distribution on Terminator Salvation) put in a bid that tried to top Lionsgate’s minimum bid of $15 million (plus 5% of future gross receipts). The bankrupt company that owned the Terminator rights, Halcyon Group, valued them at around $70 million but needless to say they didn’t get that.

Sony Bids On Terminator Franchise

Keeping with a February deadline, the auction of Terminator franchise rights is winding down. Last we heard, Lionsgate was the studio that had secured a position as a bottom line buyer, locking in a minimum bid that any other would-be buyer will have to top.

Well, Variety reports that another studio may in fact be trying to top Lionsgate’s bid, and that studio is Sony.

This news comes from a “source close to the bidding” who claims Sony put in its bid right on the Thursday deadline before bidding closed. Lionsgate’s “stalking horse” bid was $15 million for the Terminator rights and a 5% cut of future gross receipts; Sony’s bid hasn’t been revealed yet, but it had to be higher than the $15 million that Lionsgate has locked in. Terminator Franchise Snags a Low Bidder

The Terminator franchise rights are currently up for grabs and we’ve been reporting pretty extensively on the whole fiasco, trying to see (and predict) where they’ll ultimately land. Studios and independent buyers have been rumored to be circling the franchise, but the deadline is quickly approaching: Halcyon has to settle the matter by February of this year.

Nikke Finke over at Deadline Hollywood is now reporting that Halcyon Holding Group (which currently owns the franchise rights and put out last summer’s Terminator Salvation) has attracted a bargain-bin bidder, so that at least their worst case scenario won’t look so dire anymore.

The official term is a “stalking horse bidder” and in layman’s terms it’s a party which is chosen by a bankruptcy firm to hold a fixed low bid ...

Producer Talks Terminator Future & ‘Salvation’ Ending

Yesterday we posted about producer Dan Lin talking about the upcoming LEGO movie (as well as a movie called Gangster Squad), which came from an extensive interview the guys over at Collider did with him about everything he has on his slate for the future (15 projects!).

Since the interview was so long, Collider kindly decided to break it up into different posts, each time concentrating on different projects of Lin’s. Today is the turn of the Terminator franchise, of which Lin is an exec producer (at least he was on the fourth movie). Rumor Patrol: McG Making More Terminator Films?

So director McG recently did one of those BD Live screening sessions for the Terminator Salvation Blu-ray release (these BD Live screenings are really becoming all the rage). During the screening, discussion apparently turned toward future installments of the Terminator franchise and McG apparently claimed that he will in fact be back to direct the fifth and sixth installments in the series, as was originally planned back when Salvation was conceived as a new Terminator trilogy.

However, if you’ve been keeping up with Terminator news here at Screen Rant (and you should be!) then you already know that the franchise rights are currently up for auction after the company which owns them, Halcyon, put them up for sale to avoid financial ruin.

Terminator’s Fate to be Decided by February

The Halcyon Co., current owners of the rights to the Terminator franchise and the production company behind Terminator Salvation, issued a statement saying they expect to successfully auction off the franchise rights by February 1, 2010.

Check out the statement from Halcyon that Variety managed to snag:

“Over the past few weeks, Halcyon and its professionals have engaged in in-depth discussions and negotiations with numerous serious potential buyers, including several major movie studios… In addition, a number of attractive refinancing alternatives have also been presented. In order to maximize the value of a transaction for all of the company’s creditors and stakeholders, we are fully analyzing all these options.”

Huh. Sounds like something a person with a college degree would say to his knuckle-cracking bookies.
