Scott Mednick, executive producer of Where the Wild Things Are is set to produce the new film.
For those who knew no joy as children, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were the focus of comic books, tv shows, films, toys, lunch-boxes, Halloween costumes, etc., etc., with a global following at the height of their popularity in the late ’80s and early ’90s. The adolescent, anthropomorphic crime-fighters used their martial arts skills to beat up on bad guys and creatively devour pizza, while staying out of society’s way in the New York City sewers. Now that I think about it, a certain HBO comedy also followed four archetypal characters through their New York adventures, substituting cabs for sewers, cosmos for pizza and you-know-what for ninjitsu – man, what hasn’t TMNT influenced? The turtle empire originally spawned from a comic book created by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird, which was published by Mirage Studios way back in 1984.

If you really wanna scare yourself, look up Viacom’s assets. Along with Nickelodeon and Paramount Pictures, it owns MTV, Comedy Central, BET, VH1 and the video game developers behind the Rock Band phenomenon, Harmonix. They’re probably negotiating right now for the exclusive rights to use your legs. The CW4Kids programming block that airs on Saturday mornings currently features a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles animated TV series and will continue to run the show through August, 2010.

I, for one, wish the guys would come back looking like they used to. Anyone else nostalgic, or is the world ready for a new look to these familiar characters?

The once and future Ninja kings will rise again in 2012.

Ever since the announcement of a new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie, fans around the world have anxiously waited to learn more about the film. Would it be fun and family-friendly like the previous live-action TMNT films? Or, would the story be edgier and more violent like the original TMNT comics? Producers Scott Mednick and Galen Walker were on hand at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con to answer some of these questions and more.

During the panel, Walker elaborated on the film’s focus and the desire to bring the story back to the 25-year-old franchise’s origins.

“Our point of view is this: go back and look at the original Turtles comics. They are very dark. The audience is much more sophisticated than they were in 1990. This is 2009. Take the new Harry Potter for example. It is rated PG and it’s still a very dark film. We are headed that direction.”

Of course, TMNT can’t just run headlong into full head-exploding, limb slicing, Sin City mode. As Mednick stated, much of why people love the franchise is TMNT’s heart.

“The interesting thing about TMNT was the combination of action and humor, and Steve Barron (director from the first Turtles movie) added one thing, heart. We want and need to go back to that. Let’s make sure we don’t dishonor what has been before, and let’s create something new.”

As we reported last week, screenwriter John Fusco (known for his martial-arts tinged work) has been tapped to write the screenplay for the latest Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film. With Fusco on board, it seems like TMNT could find the right balance between the fun family-focused action of the original films with the darker tone of the original comics.

I am very excited to see what will happen with this new franchise. Growing up, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Batman hung side by side in my personal pantheon of awesome superheroes. I’m glad to see that TMNT is headed The Dark Knight route, but it will be interesting to see how far they can push the envelope and still get the coveted PG rating needed to draw the biggest box office returns.

What do you think of what you heard from the producers? Is a dark TMNT film what you’ve been waiting for? For more quotes from Mednick and Walker, make sure to check out the whole article from First Showing.

No release date has been set for the new live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, but it is slated to come out in 2011.

Last week Screen Rant reported on a possible new writer for the new live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie in the form of John Fusco (Young Guns). The semi-confirmation came when TMNT fan site Ninja Pizza picked up on a report put up on (and quickly removed from) TMNT25.com that listed Fusco as the writer.

However, it has just recently been officially confirmed that Fusco will write the live-action TMNT reboot, which is to be produced by Scott Mednick (300, Superman Returns) and Galen Walker (TMNT).

Variety is reporting that Fusco has been brought on-board as the writer for the new Ninja Turtles film, which is hoped to relaunch the four crime-fighting turtles, Michelangelo, Leonardo, Donatello and Raphael once more (there was an “updated” 2007 CGI-animated movie and of course the three live-action films released in the ’90s). Although no director has been signed onto the project yet, casting for the martial artists who will perform stunts in the movie began over the weekend in Hollywood.

Looking at Fusco’s resume, it looks like this project may be in decent hands. Fusco wrote Young Guns and its sequel in the late 80s/early 90s, and although he isn’t the absolute most prolific screenwriter out there, he’s written a fair amount of films including the 2004 Viggo Mortensen adventure, Hidalgo, and the Jackie Chan/Jet-Li film, The Forbidden Kingdom. Fusco also recently wrote a modern take on the Kurosawa classic, The Seven Samurai, for The Weinstein Company.

On top of his screenwriting experience with action-adventure, Fusco has been practicing martial arts himself since he was 12-years-old, and to this day continues to practice Shaolin kung fu. Fusco had this to say about writing the new TMNT movie:

It is always exciting when you can come aboard a project that bridges the worlds of what you do with what you love… I have always been a fan of the Turtles and the world of martial arts is my lifelong passion. I look forward to this great opportunity.

    John Fusco practicing martial arts

Although Fusco’s experience with fun and light action-adventure suggests that this live-action TMNT movie will follow suit, that may not be the case. Apparently Fusco’s script will take elements straight out of the original 1983 Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird TMNT comic series and incorporate it into what is being planned as an origin story for the characters.

I’m sure I’m not the only one who wants a ultra-violent, kick-ass Ninja Turtles movie more akin to the original Eastman and Laird comics. The fact that Fusco is reportedly going to incorporate elements of that series is very reassuring. But there’s little chance it will be above a PG-13 age rating (if that), simply because the studio won’t want the film to exclude younger audiences. Nonetheless, I think the addition of Fusco is a good sign for this project.

What do you think of John Fusco being the writer of the live-action TMNT movie? Do you like the way this project is shaping up?

No specific release date has been set for the new live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, but it is slated for a release sometime in 2011.

Thankfully, we live in the age of the Internet, where nothing escapes the eyes of diligent fanboys such as the writers of Ninja Pizza, a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fan-site.

In a recent post, which was picked up by /Film, Ninja Pizza noted that John Fusco (of Young Guns fame) was listed as the screenwriter of the 2011 live-action TMNT film in a recent article for TMNT25.com. Because the article has since been removed (undoubtedly because a proper announcement was not made first), Fusco’s involvement in the film should be seen as speculative. However, it’s about as close to a confirmation as you can get, so let’s start asking ourselves, “What does this mean for TMNT?”

We have previously reported here at Screen Rant that Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles will likely be a reboot origin story. Does Fusco’s attachment to the project verify that? It’s hard to say. Besides Young Guns, Fusco has written the Viggo Mortensen adventure film Hidalgo, the Val Kilmer thriller Thunderheart, and the Jet Li and Jackie Chan kung-fu film Forbidden Kingdom.

None of these movies in and of themselves say much about Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Taken collectively, however, they demonstrate Fusco’s knack for writing action-adventure as well as his interest in martial arts. If a TMNT live-action reboot were to be successful, surely these two elements would have to feature prominently in the script.

What do you think? Is John Fusco the right man to bring the Turtles back to life? Does this news paired with our report of an open casting call for Clan Foot Soldiers get you excited to see a new TMNT film?

A release date for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles has not been released, however, the film is scheduled to appear in 2011.

Box Office

Sacha Baron Cohen’s Bruno took the top spot over the weekend with a gross of $30 million. It’ll need legs like a supermodel to reach the coveted $100 million mark.

Crossing the century mark this weekend is Ice Age 3-D: Dawn Of The Dinosaurs $28 million this weekend the animated pics total now stands at $120 million. Expect an Ice Age 4.

Transformers 2: Revenge Of The Fallen banked another $24 million giving the Michael Bay action epic a grand total.

After breaking records last year with The Dark Knight, it has been a disappointing summer for Christian Bale. Terminator Salvation underperformed at the start of the summer and now Public Enemies looks to fall short of the $100 million mark. $14 million this weekend gives the Johnny Depp starrer a $66 million total.

After taking $10 million over the weekend, The Proposal now has $113 million in the bank. That’s good news for Ryan Reynolds after Wolverine and his attachment to The Green Lantern, but great news for the 40+ Sandra Bullock who proves she’s still a box office draw.

The Hangover banked $9 million over the three days giving the comedy an astounding $222 million total.

I Love You, Beth Cooper beefed it over the weekend (that is an accurate technical term) giving Chris Columbus his lowest opening in almost 20 years. Looks like Hayden Panettiere won’t be having a big movie career if they all open like this.

Cameron Diaz’s My Sister’s Keeper brought in another $5 million, that gives the weepy a total of $35 million. It should be a big hit on DVD.

Tony Scott’s The Taking of Pelham 123 banked just over $1.5 million for a total of $61 million. Considering the star power of Denzel Washington and John Travolta this has to be a bit of a disappointment.

Outside the top 10 Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smith hit $170 million; Star Trek hit $251 and comedy flops Year One and Land of The Lost brought their totals to $41 million and $48 million respectively.

Movie News

1. Those heroes in a half shell are at it again. The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are set to return in a big screen reboot.

According to SlashFilm there’s an open casting call for anyone who wants to star as a member of the Foot Clan.
The casting call takes place next Saturday and anyone attending will have to give a thirty second martial arts demonstration.

Visit SlashFilm.com for all the details.

Source: SlashFilm

2. Hollywood appears to gave gone on a William Shatner remake frenzy as they’re now eyeing a big screen version of Shatner’s TJ Hooker.

The 80’s cop show, which also starred Heather Locklear, is set to be rebooted by Eraser and Scorpion King director Chuck Russell.

According to Variety:

“The writing team of Brent Maddock and S.S. Wilson will script the story, which focuses on the relationship between the title character and his father.”

That pretty much ensures a role for Shatner, and I’m going to guess that Ben Stiller and Will Ferrell will be at the top of some casting directors list for portray the titular Hooker – after all this is being pitched as an “action comedy”

Source: Variety

3. Jason Statham appears to be giving actioners a break with a role in Brit flick Blitz. Statham has apparently signed on to play “a rather crude, un-PC, borderline sociopath of a cop” Detective Sergeant Brant in the film that will co-star Paddy Considine.

According to Crimespree Cinema:

“The South East London police squad are down and out: Detective Sergeant Brant is in hot water for assaulting a police shrink, Chief Inspector Roberts’ wife has died in a horrific car accident, and WPC Falls is still figuring out how to navigate her job as a black female investigator in the notorious unit. When a serial killer takes his show on the road, things get worse for all three. Nicknamed “The Blitz” by the rabid London media, the killer is aiming for tabloid immortality by killing cops in different beats around the city.”

Sounds like it could be quite good. Although I have said that before…

Source: Crimespree Cinema

4. Zooey Deschanel will join Danny McBride, James Franco and Natalie Portman in Your Highness.

The Hollywood Reporter says:

“”Highness,” written by Ben Best and Danny McBride, centers on an arrogant, lazy prince (McBride) who must complete a quest to save his father’s kingdom. Joining him on the quest is his more heroic brother (James Franco). Deschanel plays Belladonna, Franco’s virginal bride.”

The film starts shooting in Belfast this month.

Source: The Hollywood Reporter

5. Robert DeNiro is attached to star in a news script by Paul Schrader.
The Taxi Driver and Raging Bull duo will re-team in CIA thriller The Dying of the Light.

DeNiro will play an aging CIA agent who is slowly losing his memory and he must find a way to recall and save all the secrets locked within his mind as he ventures on one final mission.

Schrader and DeNiro equals must see.

That’s it for now. See you at the movies.

Back in May, 300 and Superman Returns producer Scott Mednick gave us some early details on the upcoming live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie. He revealed things such as the fact that it will definitely be live-action, that they’re using the original Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird comics as a starting point (citing them as, “the best source material”), and they’re trying to bring a whole new generation into the Turtles universe.

Expanding on the latter, Mednick has said the new movie will feature the origin of our Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Mednick recently spoke to Mania about the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie, specifically about such things as bringing a new audience up to speed with the TMNT universe and how the Turtles will look in the live-action/CGI movie. Here’s some of what he had to say:

We are intent on re-telling the origin, as it was in Batman, as it was in Superman, frankly as it was in Spider-Man, to tell the origin story. We have an entire new generation of fans who really don’t know the full back story.

You have a much more sophisticated audience [nowadays]. Even the younger kids are more sophisticated by the information they receive. Things have become a little darker and a little edgier, just in general. Certainly as filmmakers the technology has come so far. It really gives us an opportunity to revisit the material and come at it, hopefully, in a new dramatic way, from a filmmaking standpoint, and honor the old, and bring in the new.

We want the Turtles to be real. We want them to be in the movie, not Gollumed… We’re excited about the opportunity to use all of these new technologies to give the experience that you really believe the turtles are real, they’re teenagers, they have great personalities, not guys in suits.

For the rest of what Mednick had to say about the live action Ninja Turtles movie – which includes comparisons between it and the upcoming Where The Wild Things Are – you can head over to Mania.

Although I like the whole idea of using today’s technology to give the new Ninja Turtles a cool look (although I don’t know about Mednick’s comment about Gollum), I’m still not sold on the idea of the new movie being live-action. The three Ninja Turtles live-action films they made in the 90’s (with silly looking men-in-suits) were cheesy and certainly worlds away from the kickass Ninja Turtles I know I, at least, want to see on the big-screen.

I will say this is a situation where I wouldn’t mind the movie being an origin story, simply because they kind of have to do that with TMNT if it’s going to be a reboot, don’t they? Look at the wonders it did for Batman when he began! Although it’s doubtful, here’s hoping this new TMNT movie follows in Batman’s footsteps.

What do you think about the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot being an origin story? Do you think live action/CGI is the way to go?

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is currently in the early development stages (no writer or director attached yet) and doesn’t yet have a release date.

Last month we reported that a new live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie was in the works. Since that time, Ninja Turtles co-creator Peter Laird has spoken up about what fans can expect from the new film; even more recently, MTV News spoke with Scott Mednick, producer of the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film. And Mr. Mednick had quite a bit to say.

Scott Mednick was also an executive producer on 300 and Superman Returns, which gives him a 50% average for adapting comic book properties into $uccessful films. I’m just kidding. Mednick obviously has passion for the comic book movie genre – enough so that he’s willing to put his money where his geek is. As producer of Where The Wild Things Are, he also knows a thing or two about bringing strange creatures to life on the big screen (and did I also mention he’s producing the upcoming American Gladiators movie???). Busy man, that Scott Mednick.

But I digress: here’s an abridged version of MTV’s talk with Mednick about the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles flick:

MTV: With the new “Mutant Turtles” movie, a lot of talk thus far has been about potential storylines. Peter [Laird] told me it’s being envisioned as a sort of “reboot” of the live-action movie franchise. Is that the case?

SCOTT MEDNICK: Well, it is the case, that’s certainly how it’s being envisioned. I was part of the reboot of Superman, and a part of the reboot of Batman, and what happens after a certain amount of time — and certainly 25 years is a lot of time — is you’ve gone through multiple generations of fans. And we have a group of fans that love the property, and a group of fans who don’t really understand all of the intricacies of how these characters came to be.

What we want to do is service the story in a way that we have technology and ability that we didn’t have 25 years ago to say “here’s the story” to the fans, and bring in a whole new generation of fans that can then start with us again.

MTV: Story-wise, are you planning to revisit any specific stories? Is it going to be following the first story arc of the “Ninja Turtles” comics?

MEDNICK: Certainly, the first group of comics that Laird and [Kevin] Eastman wrote are just the very best of source material. We have 25 years of rear-view mirror to look into, and to see where the franchise has gone. But we’re also looking at where the audiences are now. The audience today is very different than it was 25 years ago.

So it’s really trying to modulate the expectations of the fans today, the expectations of those kids and teenagers of today, the origins of the Turtles themselves and their world, and blend those together. That’s the fun, that’s the challenge.

MTV: It’s at an early stage thus far, but Peter mentioned that he was hoping to get in Baxter Stockman and the mousers, and said Shredder was a very necessary part if you’re going to tell an origin story for the Turtles. What’s on the table?

MEDNICK: Well, I won’t talk about what’s on or off the table, but what I will tell you is, if you go back to the origin story, you’ve got one of the great villains. I mean, Shredder is just one of the great villains for us to play with, and we are certainly expecting to bring the entire origin story — which could not be told without Shredder.

MTV: It’s been said that filming will involve a live-action/CGI hybrid, with live actors and computer effects putting the Turtles’ faces over them. Can you elaborate on that process and how you envision it?

MEDNICK: Well, we’re in the early development stage, so no critical decisions have been made. However, that being said, I can tell you that yes, it’s a live-action film. We’ve gone through an animated version of the Turtles for quite some time, but if you return to those original movies, they were live-action.

I’m an executive producer on “Where the Wild Things Are,” which also used, if you will, creatures. And we have some technology today that they just didn’t have when the previous live-action movies were made, and what we’re hoping to do is to bring all of the cinematic tricks that are in the 2009 bag into this effort.

MTV: Going back to Turtles themselves, has there been any talk thus far in terms of casting? In a perfect world, is there someone you’d like to have in one of the roles?

MEDNICK: We’re finding that — and this is fascinating for us — there are many, many actors, writers and directors who, when they’ve heard about this project, say “I love the Turtles! Oh, man, I’d love to write that!” or “I’d love to direct that!” because they just loved it. And I’m looking for that passion. When you find an actor or a director who grew up with it or wants to be a part of it, we’re definitely talking to those people.

That’s the meaty version of the interview, but if you want to read the full transcript it includes Mednick discussing where some of F/X tech for the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles might come from, as well as the startling revelation that a certain Iron Man 2 star got his acting start as part of the Foot Clan. You can check all of that out by going here.

In the meantime, what do you think about Scott Mednick’s conception of the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles? Does the whole Avatar-tech approach work for you? Or did you like the quasi-Muppet Turtles of the original live-action films?

The re-make machine is now targeting our childhood by bringing back our favorite crime-fighting mutated turtles to the big screen. The project is said to focus on the origins of the team and will bring our heroes Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello and Raphael and the wise master Splinter together for a new live-action adventure.

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles celebrate their 25th anniversary next month as we look back at their debut in the 1984 comic book that led to cartoons, a series of live-action films followed by an animated 3-D film, a pile of video games and a ton of toy merchandise (including the awesome Cowabunga Carl Party Van with built-in Pizza shooter! You know what I’m talking about).

As cool as this may be to see another live-action incarnation after 16 years, I’m not sure a modern live-action TMNT film will fly amongst today’s audiences. Nevertheless, I’m excited to see what this movie will bring and I’m sure it’ll correct the disaster that was Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III.

What do you think of a live-action TMNT remake (not associated with 2007’s TMNT animated movie)?

The movie is scheduled for release in 2011.

Another Wednesday and therefore another Mid-Week Movie Wrap up to furnish you with the latest movie news around.

This week we look at:

Why Tim Roth isn’t in Inglorious Bastards, who will be directing a new Tarzan film, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles go live action, Jerry Bruckheimer decides that Killing Rommel is a good idea and we search for The 39 Clues.

1. The reason that Tim Roth has not signed on to Quentin Tarantino’s Inglorious Bastards is because he is going to star in the film version of Skellig.

The film will be based on the children’s novel by David Almond. The book follows a young boy named Michael who discovers what may or may not be an angel in his garage. The film will costar John Simms and Kelly MacDonald and it will be directed by Annabel Jankel of Super Mario Brothers fame. Ouch.

The book isn’t a bad little read, but sometimes the blatant imagery feels like Almond is hitting you in head with a sledgehammer.

Source: Variety

2. Stephen Sommers will direct a new film version of Tarzan. The director of the first two Mummy films and the forthcoming G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra will helm the Stuart Beattie penned film.

Sounds like the type of film that Sommers loves to make, but I doubt that he will add anything new to the character -except maybe CGI. This new version of Edgar Rice Burroughs character was originally going to be helmed by Guillermo del Toro, but he’s making something called The Hobbit. I can’t imagine that being a hit! Sarcasm.

Source: Variety

3. Those “heroes in a half shell” are coming back…again. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles co-creator Kevin Eastman has been talking up a reboot of the fun loving Turtles franchise. Eastwood posted this on HeavyMetal.com:

“Yes, it is true. Although the CGI film did well enough to warrant a sequel, there has been much talk between Imagi and Warners to do a better “re-invention” (newest Hollywood buzzword) of the TMNT’s, in a live action film–like what was done with Batman. Back to basics, back to the origin and the intro of the Shredder, etc…there have been talks, trips to Northampton to talk to Mr Laird, and discussions with the original “first” TMNT film director Steve Barron to come back and do it right–but no official word yet…will keep you posted. Best, Kevin”

Funny thing is – I think that the message has now been deleted. Odd.

Does anyone really care? Those Turtles must be hitting middle age by now.

Sources: Comingsoon and Heavy Metal

4. Hollywood loves a sequel, so therefore they really love WW2. Hot on the heels of Valkyrie and Inglorious Bastards comes Killing Rommel. According to Variety:

“Killing Rommel focuses on the British Long Range Desert Group and its attempt to stop Rommel, the legendary Desert Fox who routed the British in the North African desert in 1942 and threatened to overrun the Middle East thanks to his battlefield strategies and Panzer tanks”.

Jerry Bruckheimer will produce the film for Disney. The film is to be adapted from a book by Steven Pressfield who wrote Gates of Fire (based on the same historical events as 300) which was due to star Bruce Willis and George Clooney at one point.

Killing Rommel will be adapted by Randall Wallace the man behind Braveheart, We Were Soldiers and Pearl Harbor.

Expect Christian Bale or Daniel Craig to be offered the script first.

Source: Variety

5. Jeff Nathanson has signed on to pen the screenplay for The 39 Clues. Based on a forthcoming “interactive multi-platform adventure” the film “may” be directed by Steven Spielberg. I wouldn’t hold my breath for that. The director has more films on his plate than Tom Cruise.

Nathanson has written such diverse films as Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Rush Hour 2, Rush Hour 3, The Terminal and Catch Me If You Can.

To be honest the whole idea sounds rather naff.
