Now that director Craig Brewer’s remake of the beloved ’80s dance drama Footloose has made a respectable showing at the box-office, it’s possible that we may start to hear more about the filmmaker’s next passion project — a new version of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ Tarzan.

Warner Bros. commissioned both Brewer and Adam Cozad to submit dueling versions of the tale, as they chart a path forward developing the film. Earlier this summer, it was reported that Brewer was crafting his script as the first in a planned trilogy – an idea that the writer/director immediately dispelled when we sat down to speak with him about the project.

SR: What will we see in your iteration of Tarzan, and why would it be a trilogy?

Craig Brewer (Hustle & Flow) has locked a deal to write and direct a new 'Tarzan' movie for Warner Bros. - with the hopes of eventually making a trilogy of films about the ape man.

Word got out a few weeks ago that Warner Bros. was ready to revisit one of the longest-running and most popular literature-turned-film franchises in Hollywood – by making a new Tarzan movie. The studio had charged screenwriter Adam Cozad (the upcoming Jack Ryan reboot) and filmmaker Craig Brewer (Hustle & Flow) with the task of writing dual Tarzan scripts for future use.

It seems that Brewer managed to make an impression on studio heads with his revamping (or – dare it be said – rebooting) of the ape man series; he’s now reportedly a lock to write and direct the latest Tarzan flick.

Warner Bros. has been struggling for a while to get the ball rolling on another Tarzan motion picture. According to Variety, back in 2003, screenwriter John August ...

Click to continue reading Craig Brewer Set to Helm New ‘Tarzan’ Movie (Possibly a Trilogy)

Warner Bros. has reportedly set Adam Cozad (the Jack Ryan reboot) and Craig Brewer (Hustle & Flow) to develop dual scripts for a new 'Tarzan' movie.

Somewhere in the vicinity of eighty-nine Tarzan movies (or, rather, films with Tarzan in the title) have been produced by Hollywood since the early 20th century. So it’s not all that shocking that Warner Bros. is planning to revisit that well yet again and produce another motion picture based on Edgar Rice Burroughs’ famous creation.

As it stands, the studio looks to recruit two different writers to begin work on a script for the new Tarzan flick – thus allowing for more leeway in terms of the direction of the project.

According to Deadline, Adam Cozad (whose blacklisted script Dubai was the basis for the upcoming Jack Ryan reboot) appears set to work on one prospective screenplay for the new Tarzan movie. Meanwhile, Craig Brewer (Hustle & Flow) will simultaneously craft his own ...

Click to continue reading Warner Bros.
Over the years there have been many versions of the classic Tarzan story, from the original Tarzan of the Apes book written back in 1912 to book sequels, movies, radio and TV series, stage plays, video games and comic books – all in all there’s been over a hundred(!) incarnations of the Tarzan lore over the years.

So it’s not surprise to find out that there’s yet another version of Tarzan on the way, this time in 3D animated form (it’s not clear if that means it’ll be in stereoscopic 3D). Variety reports that a German company, Constantin Film, are developing the new Tarzan flick after the studio acquired the rights to the Tarzan series from the estate of author Edgar Rice Burroughs.

Constantin’s Robert Kulzer and Reinhard Klooss will produce the Tarzan pic and it will be ...

Click to continue reading New 3D Animated Tarzan Movie In the Works

Another Wednesday and therefore another Mid-Week Movie Wrap up to furnish you with the latest movie news around.

This week we look at:

Why Tim Roth isn’t in Inglorious Bastards, who will be directing a new Tarzan film, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles go live action, Jerry Bruckheimer decides that Killing Rommel is a good idea and we search for The 39 Clues.

1. The reason that Tim Roth has not signed on to Quentin Tarantino’s Inglorious Bastards is because he is going to star in the film version of Skellig.

The film will be based on the children’s novel by David Almond. The book follows a young boy named Michael who discovers what may or may not be an angel in his garage. The film will costar John Simms and Kelly MacDonald and it will be directed by Annabel Jankel of Super Mario Brothers fame. Ouch.

The book isn’t a bad little read, but sometimes the ...

Click to continue reading Mid-Week Movie News Wrap Up – Sept. 3, 2008
