People know about big-budget superhero films Hollywood has churned out in recent years, but they may not be familiar with earlier attempts to put heroes on the screen - some successful, others not so much.

Both DC Comics and Marvel would have you think that big-budget, blockbuster films like Superman, Spider-Man, Batman, X-Men, Green Lantern and The Avengers are their only attempts to bring popular comic book characters into the live-action arena. They would like everyone to forget the sometimes absurd, ridiculous and often ugly reality: that there were numerous early – and failed – attempts to bring super heroes to both the big and small screens.

Over the next few pages you can read about these early superhero attempts and the actors who portrayed them on-screen. Some you may be familiar with, but we’ll bet you’ve never heard of many of them.

NOTE: This list doesn’t cover every instance of every superhero who has ever appeared on TV or ...

Click to continue reading Before They Were Movies: Early Attempts to Bring Superheroes to Life Onscreen

According to Splice director Vincenzo Natali, a Swamp Thing movie won't be happening anytime soon due to legal issues.

MTV caught up with director Vincenzo Natali this week – as he’s currently promoting his new sci-fi/horror flick Splice - and was informed that unfortunately an adaptation of the comic book Swamp Thing is no longer in the works.

Last month, Natali expressed interest in directing a film version of Swamp Thing based off writer Alan Moore’s critically-revered run of the character in the 1980s. Due to certain legal matters, it looks as though that will not be happening in the near future.

According to Natali:

“[Producer] Joel Silver actually had a couple of [Swamp Thing] scripts in, only to discover later on that the film rights were held by another company. And it’s even more complicated than that, I’m told.”

The director of the upcoming sci-fi horror flick 'Splice' is interested in directing an adaptation of the comic book series 'Swamp Thing' as his next project.

A lot of people probably aren’t familiar with the name Vincenzo Natali (Cube), but he’s the writer/director behind this summer’s “science gone wrong” horror film Splice, which stars Adrien Brody (Predators) and Sarah Polley (Dawn of the Dead remake) and is being produced by Guillermo del Toro (The Hobbit).

If you caught the Splice trailer, then you’re probably already intrigued by what looks like Species for a new generation of sci-fi lovers. The trailer has its share of hokey “what have we done?” moments and cliché flash cuts of the film’s hyrbid monster attacking people, but the cinematography looks appropriately chilly and there’s a definite Alien-like atmosphere to the whole thing. So, fingers crossed, we have a winner on our hands.

I mention all this as backdrop for the news that Vincenzo Natali spoke to ...

Click to continue reading ‘Splice’ Director Taking On Swamp Thing?

Akiva Goldsman, the screenwriter/producer who has brought us such gems as Batman & Robin, Lost in Space, The Da Vinci Code, Hancock and I am Legend, recently spoke to the L.A. Times and dropped a few tidbits of info on the many comic book films he currently has in the pipeline as a producer.

So, if you want some updates on DC Comic films Lobo, Swamp Thing, Jonah Hex and more, keep on reading as I cut down the lengthy interview into some easy-to-absorb snippets for you to feast on.

Check it out:

Starting with Lobo, which is being directed by Guy Ritchie (Sherlock Holmes):

“There’s something hyperbolic and authentic about a Guy Ritchie movie. His best movie are deeply, deeply stylized yet they are all grounded; there’s a grit of stylization, which sounds like an oxymoron but ...

Click to continue reading Producer Talks ‘Lobo,’ ‘Jonah Hex,’ ‘Swamp Thing’ and More

Well it’s time once again to put on my cynical hat, a hat that I find myself reaching for more and more lately. It’s not really something that I want to do but if Hollywood insists on pushing 3D technology as the next big thing and consistently under-delivers on their promises, then I’m going to just keep putting it on.

So, what is the next 3D bullet being loaded into Hollywood’s chamber? How about the DC comic hero Swamp Thing? Steve “Frosty” Weintraub at Collider was fortunate to be at a press conference with mega-producer Joel Silver for his newest movie Whiteout, starring super hot Kate Beckinsale. Joel has some ideas for the 3D technology (what director/producer/studio doesn’t these days?) and he had this to say:
