Preview: Last Supernatural For 2009

While common-folk around the world are pulling their hair out trying to figure out how to program their DVRs, fans of Supernatural know that at 9PM on Thursday nights is time for the Winchester brothers to kick some supernatural butt. Given that tonight’s episode is the last episode of 2009, I figured it’s only appropriate to write something up.

Since the premiere of the fifth season, we’ve seen Lucifer rise from hell, Bobby become confined to a wheelchair, the brothers Winchester become television stars, 80-yr-old Dean Winchester kick some warlock butt and we finally find out what happens at all those Supernatural conventions. I’d say that’s pretty good for a couple of month’s work.

Still, the fight isn’t over; Lucifer is still on the loose and now that we found out that the Trickster is really the archangel Gabriel, the Winchester brothers are in it neck deep. Maybe it’s time that they ask for help from some familiar faces (and I’m not talking about Castiel).

That’s right Supernatural fans, tonight’s episode brings back everyone’s favorite mother-daughter hunting combo Ellen and Jo for an all out fight to track down the colt and send Lucifer back from which he came.

Although, don’t expect The Devil to go quietly as Ellen and Jo might not be the only familiar faces and these other faces just might not be so friendly. There’s also rumors that two characters don’t make it through tonight’s episode, but we won’t spoil that for you.

Check out the description of tonight’s episode, “Abandon All Hope.”

Sam (Jared Padalecki), Dean (Jensen Ackles) and Castiel (Misha Collins) track down the Colt and head off to find Lucifer (guest star Mark Pelligreno) to send him back to Hell. It’s a hunters’ reunion when the crew joins forces with Bobby (Jim Beaver), Ellen (guest star Samantha Ferris) and Jo (guest star Alona Tal) for what could be their last night on Earth.

What’s that? The description says nothing of unfriendly familiar faces. Well, I’ll just drop a little SPOILER BOMB on you and tell you that Meg has come back and brought with her Dean’s favorite pets. That’s right, the hell hounds.

Enough of me, check out a couple previews of tonight’s episode below.

So, there you have it. The last Supernatural of 2009. Do you think this will be an appropriate send-off into the new year? Will Lucifer finally go to hell? Will Bobby be able to walk again? Who else is scared of hell hounds?

Ratings: ‘Smallville’ Flying High, ‘FlashForward’ Losing Viewers

With November sweeps and the World Series both starting last week, it causes a strange effect in television ratings. While November sweeps is supposed to bring in high ratings, the World Series always cuts into their usual audience as we’re seeing with ABC’s much touted drama, FlashForward. The new series created by David S. Goyer and Brannon Braga saw its lowest ratings last week and conversly, this past week Smallville saw their highest ratings since the ninth season began.

Still, can the World Series really account for all these ratings fluctuations? As a fan of Smallville, I make sure to always tune in, but even with the show being able to pull in 2.6 million viewers; it’s still down over 1 million viewers from last season. When Smallville made the move to Friday night, The CW was putting their veteran series up against the powerhouse that is CBS’s Friday night line-up. Since the Kryptonian visitor has been able to hold its own on the toughest night of the week, I have a feeling that Mr. Kent may receive another season order.

That is something, sadly, Dollhouse will unlikely be given as FOX’s decision to replace Dollhouse for the month of November with reruns of their number one rated medical drama, House. While the rerun of the two-hour series premiere received marginally more viewers than Dollhouse in that time slot, it was still bested by Smallville.

Alright, enough of the Smallville talk. While I could go on forever, we’ve got to get down to the nitty-gritty; what is up with FlashForward? Is this show on the decline? Will we even make it to the April 29, 2010?

ABC has been promoting FlashForward for as long as I can remember (My memory only goes back about a year). They’ve been setting this series up to be the replacement for Lost and if you looked at the premiere, you might think they were correct.

The series premiere pulled in 12.45 million viewers but as the sixth episode just aired, the latest episode received just 9 million viewers. I know that no one expects any series to retain 100% of their premiere audience, but I have a feeling that this has less to do with the World Series and more to do with what’s going on with show itself.

Since the news of FlashForward being down in the ratings, discussions behind-the-scenes at Screen Rant have been back and forth trying to figure out why exactly the show is losing viewers. Some people think it’s because of the direction that they’re taking the show, some people think that it’s the long, artificially drawn-out storylines, but almost everyone agrees that something’s up – we just can’t put our finger on it.

Not yet at least.

So, I pose the question to you, the reader; What is up FlashForward? Are you happy with the show the way it is and the way they’re taking it? Is there anything that you’re not enjoying? Do you think that this show will be able to reach the three to five year mark needed to tell the entire tale?

(I’m not trying to leave all you Smallville fans out, so if you want to throw in some fist pumps, go for it. Also, if anyone wants to mention how great last weeks Supernatural was, I just might have to agree with you.)

The CW Thursday Night Ratings Are Strong

Smallville fans who are miffed at The CW for moving your favorite show, you probably don’t want to read this.

The CW’s Thursday night time slot is showing serious ratings momentum as The Vampire Diaries posted its best ratings yet since the series premiere.

The Vampire Diaries drew in an estimated 3.8 million viewers last Thursday, October 15th.

Behind The Vampire Diaries, Supernatural is also on an up tick in the ratings as 2.6 million viewers also tuned in for that powerful episode.

These numbers are an increase over this time slot last year of 14% in adults 18-34, 43% in women 18-34, 7% in adults 18-49 and 36% in women 18-49.

I have to say, I’ve not been horribly disappointed with The Vampire Diaries and am totally loving the 5th season of Supernatural.

Supernatural Episode Preview: “The End”

This Thursday, 10/1/09, the Supernatural episode titled “The End” airs.

In the preview for “The End,” Sam (Jared Padalecki) asks Dean (Jensen Ackles) if they can team back up, but Dean say no. Zachariah (guest star Kurt Fuller) later tosses Dean 5 years into the future and shows him what will be to come from his saying no to helping the angels fight Lucifer.

Fun facts:

This episode was filmed on the Watchmen set. As you know, Jeffrey Dean Morgan was in Watchmen where he played The Comedian. In Supernatural, he played John Winchester (AKA Dean and Sam’s father).

The sets were next to each other and the boys and their “dad” had a nice reunion.

Check out the preview of the upcoming episode, “The End.” Now tell me that in some ways, this preview just isn’t damn funny.

While you’re at it, watch for some developments concerning Castiel! I wouldn’t miss this episode of Supernatural! Looks like fun!

Is Jeffrey Dean Morgan Returning to Supernatural?

A while back, word on the street was that the CW network would love to have John Winchester pass on through Supernatural in its 5th season. Howevever, showrunner Eric Kripke has been noted to saying that Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s schedule wasn’t making it easy to happen.

But was Kripke messing with us?

I ask because Morgan said in an interview with SCI FI Wire that no one has contacted him and adds that he’d love to come back and do an episode.

“I don’t know how I’d find the time, but we’ll see.”

In the same article, Morgan also touched on a rumor that there might be a spin-off / reboot of Supernatural with different or secondary characters.

He has the same take I do on that rumor: The show would lose 90% of its demographic and it’s almost as stupid of an idea / rumor as was the short lived idea by The CW to have The Graysons be a TV series.

So… what’s the deal? Is this all talk from a man with a way-too-busy schedule or does he really want to do a return guest spot? For the man I’m pulling to play Lobo, I’d rather he go smash things than hunt ghosts! But that’s just me if I had to choose.

Best of both worlds?

Have Lobo played by Morgan show up in Supernatural, and the Winchester brothers be freaked out how much he looks like their dad.

‘Chuck’ Producer Venturing Into Sci-Fi Western

So it worked once and it developed a devoted following, despite how Fox treated it, so it looks like Fox is trying it again.

Scott Rosenbaum (Producer: Chuck, The Shield) is stepping outside the boundaries he’s made for himself with NBC’s Chuck and is taking a stab at a yet-to-be-named western with a science fiction twist.

Rosenbaum will be producing the show with Warner Bros. TV and Wonderland Sound and Vision studios (McG’s company), the latter of which has a fairly decent list of shows to their credits. That’s if you count Chuck, Human Target and Supernatural as decent shows. They also produce The OC, but I couldn’t put that in the same sentence with the phrase “decent shows.” Just ain’t our cup of tea here at Screen Rant.

I said sadly, because as much as I am loyal to the memory of Joss Whedon’s Firefly (a great sci-fi/western TV show), I am going to be giving Rosenbaum’s show a look-see once it gets going.

At the moment, we have no other details on the show. I hope they best tread very carefully on ground already trodden, because you know for a fact that the fan base of Joss Whedon and other editorial entertainment writers will be comparing it to Firefly. Not that Firefly has the sole market on sci-fi westerns, but it’s the most popular template for comparison.

Supernatural Season 5 Premiere: Review & Discussion

No real spoilers are in this article.

Sometimes a show will peak at their season finale and then come back a little subdued, but the season 5 premiere of Supernatural did anything but that. The show opened with a fantastic recap of last season, accompanied by an awesome AC/DC song called “Thunderstruck.” After the recap, we slipped right into the action, picking up exactly where the finale left us. The Winchester brothers trying to get away from the portal that Lucifer was released from and we went from there.

We got a great opening dose of Castiel, Bobby, Meg, the scribe Chuck, Lucifer and his newest vessel (Mark Pellegrino). Eric Kripke (Creator) really tossed up a nice curve ball with Lucifer’s salesmanship. Dang.

We also got some standard verbal ass-hats from Dean and quite a bit of butt-kicking from Sam and Dean in this season 5 opener. If the series maintains this kind of momentum, it will be a butt-kicker of a show this season. One of the things I look forward to are the Four Horsemen in their muscle cars on Supernatural.

I was shocked with the state Bobby was in (Did I forget something from last season?) and the final conversation in this episode between the brothers was incredibly insightful and will leave an interesting undertone for me throughout the rest of the season.

Maybe I’m partial, but what befuddles me is that Supernatural premiered with only 3.4 million viewers, dropping approximately 600k viewers from the season 4 opener. Have they lost viewers from the CW moving Smallville to Fridays? Who knows but they broke up a well-integrated team of shows, hoping to help their new vamp show, The Vampire Diaries. (Where’s Buffy when you need her?)

So, am I totally biased, or was this an awesome premiere of Supernatural?

Supernatural Season 5 Preview

Supernatural is barreling at us Thursday night at 9 p.m. on The CW for it’s 5th season premiere and we have a preview of it for you. This season brings closure to show creator Eric Kripke’s original vision for the series.

Season 5 will see the Winchester brothers release Lucifer, start Armageddon and help Cass learn to deal with his diminishing powers, now that he’s on the outs from the circle of angels he was working with.

I’ve seen and read a few things that are spoilery and I am not mentioning them here, but I am really looking forward to this season. Remember, Smallville has moved to Friday nights and The Vampire Diaries will be the lead-in show for Sam and Dean.

The following preview for season 5 of Supernatural is a pretty intense 1 minute and 15 seconds – At least for this Supernatural fan.

Supernatural: Some Season 5 Story Points

Eric Kripke says that we’re going to be seeing few of what I would call heavy hitters in the upcoming 5th season of Supernatural.

God will be intervening, but probably not until the end of the season.

Castiel (Misha Collins) will be a hunted fugitive, as far as Heaven is concerned and as time goes on, his powers begin to fade. This in turn, is where he’ll learn how to be human. (Trust me Cass, it ain’t no picnic some days!)

We’ll be seeing every hunter who’s still alive.

As far as the Apocalypse goes, season 5 starts out bad and only gets worse. Being the Apocalypse, we get a glimpse of hell on Earth in a future-look episode:

The Croatoan virus from season 2 runs rampant,
Hunters hiding in the woods to survive,
Sam and Dean, weary and time worn,
The Four Horesmen, who, by the way, drive muscle cars,
Sarah Palin as president.

Told ya it was the Apocalypse!

For me, this sounds like they saved it all for one bad-**s season of butt kicking, mind bending developments. I can’t wait for how they end this present 5-year story arc of Supernatural which premieres on September 10th.

FRINGE

Got a few pics from Fringe’s upcoming second season. The pics include The Bishops (Joshua Jackson, John Noble) and Astrid (Jasika Nicole) up to their usual hijinks in the lab, as well as guest star Meghan Markle, who will play junior FBI agent Amy Jessup – I’m guessing while Sr. Agent Olivia Dunham (Anna Torv) is hanging out with Leonard Nimoy in alternate dimensions.

CHUCK

Superman Returns star Brandon Routh will be joining the cast of Chuck for a multi-episode story arch in the upcoming season. Routh will join the show during its fourth episode where he will be playing a new spy named Shaw who takes over Operation Bartwoski and naturally starts competing for Sarah’s affections.

Chuck returns this spring on NBC.

ALIEN NATION

Alien Nation is still making its way back to television. Syfy (and parent company NBC Universal) are working with Twentieth Century Fox to reboot the 80s-90s cult hit show, under the creative direction of Tim Minear, a TV vet with shows like Firefly and The X-Files under his belt.

Minear has claimed that he was the new Alien Nation to be ‘The Wire with aliens,’ and after seeing all the great stuff that director Neil Blomkamp milked out of the premise for District 9 (a film undoubtedly inspired by shows like Alien Nation), I’d say a retooled Alien Nation definitely has potential.

As for contemporary relevance, Minear claims that examples like the culture clashes happening in many European countries would be a good starting point for the series (transplanted to the US of A, of course).

TRUE BLOOD

True Blood has “glammed” the masses! The DVD of the HBO Series’ first season is slowly gaining on Flight of the Concords as the best-selling TV DVD. True Blood has sold almost $46 million in DVDs as of the middle of August.

Personally, I think True Blood deserves to be crowned king of DVD, considering how explicitly adult-themed the show is. Guess sex (mixed with violence and vamps) still does sell…

SUPERNATURAL

Seems Supernatural still has its neck on the chopping block. Said show creator Eric Kripke in a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly:

“I did set out [to] tell a five-season storyline…Quite frankly, I never expected [the show] to make it to five years. But now that we’re in our fifth year, I have every intention of ending the story with a bang and not drawing it out or watering it down.”

Well… Kripke at least makes a kind of concession do Supernatural die-hards out there, claiming that is finale for the series will leave room for a whole new installment of the show, with a whole new mythology to build on, in case it gets an eleventh-hour stay of execution. As Kripke points out, Buffy did it, The X-Files did it, so can Supernatural.

The show returns on September 10th @ 9pm ET/PT on the CW.

CAPRICA

Wanna hear actor/comedian Patton Oswalt talk about his role on the upcoming Battlestar Galactica series, Caprica? Oswalt will play Baxter Sarno, a talk show comedian who snags an interview with Cylon creator Daniel Graystone and his wife. There are a couple of good tidbits of the series for you BSG fans who have been wondering what’s coming your way.

Caprica starts with a two-hour premiere on January 22, 2010, @ 9 p.m. ET/PT and will air Fridays at 10 p.m. on Syfy.

So we recently let you Office fans know when you can expect Jim and Pam to walk down the aisle – four episodes into the news season. And now we have the first official wedding photo!

The scene was shot at a church in Van Nuys, California on this past weekend and from the photos below you can see that Pam (Jenna Fischer) will be a lovely bride and Jim (John Krasinski) will be every girl’s hometown-sweetheart Prince Charming.

Smallville

Actress Steph Song let it be known on her Twitter account yesterday that she will be playing the role of Roulette on the sixth episode of Smallville’s upcoming 9th season. In the DC Universe Roulette is a kick-ass madame of underground fighting tournaments, often using super heroes and/or villains as combatants.

Not sure how the character will be portrayed on Smallville, but I’ll sure tune in to find out!

The show returns on September 25th (that’s Friday now) @ 8/7c on the CW.

Saturday Night Live

Life & Style is exclusively reporting that “actress” Megan Fox will be the host kicking SNL’s 35th season on September 26th. Fox would naturally do the gig in order to further promote her upcoming high school comedy/horror flick Jennifer’s Body, and has reportedly been prepping to bring the yuck-yuck by doing a digital short with Andy Samberg.

I’m I the only one who thinks SNL could potentially be off to a bad start this decade year?

In today’s Weekly TV Wrap Up, we’re going to talk about Fringe realities, Supernatural & Smallville news & True Blood setting records.

We’re then going to touch on some news from Fox’s House, and wrap things up with an NCIS tidbit and some more summer time ratings.

Let’s get to it, shall we?

Fringe

Despite the possibility of there being multiple realities, the showrunners for Fringe are only going to torment the viewers with one alternate reality at a time. Thank god. I have enough trouble with my own reality as it is!

As they put it, there’s “over here” and the alternate reality referred to as “over there,” where William Bell (Leonard Nimoy) lives.

The upcoming season will take place mostly “over here,” but what occurs “over there” will have a great impact on what happens “over here.” (Did you follow that?)

Leonard Nimoy has already filmed one episode for season 2 and will be making numerous appearances throughout the season.

Fringe returns Sept. 17 at 9 p.m. on Fox.

Supernatural

I call this when worlds collide! I know you’ve all been waiting for this one moment in time, but Paris Hilton is going to guest star on Supernatural. Crickets…

She’ll be playing a demon that takes the form of, all things, Paris Hilton. I so can’t wait for the Winchester brothers to stake her!

Eric Kripke calls it a “… a fun, irreverent episode.” I call it frightening.

The episode, titled “American Idol,” will air on October 8, 2009.

Smallville

According showrunner Brian Peterson, they’re backing down from claims made earlier in the off-season that the upcoming 9th season of Smallville will be darker.

After they dropped that bombshell, fans started to get grumpy saying “Superman fans don’t do dark.” and “Nobody watches a TV show to become depressed.” LOL… I’m guessing they weren’t Battlestar Galactica fans.

Peterson went on to sooth the fanbase by adding that season 9 will not be all gloom and doom and backpedaled saying that Clark will just have some hard decisions to make.

WARNING: He did warn us that sparks may very well fly between Clark and Lois… and they’ll be fighting zombies and … well crap, I may have said too much already. Zombies? Am I reporting on Supernatural or Smallville?

True Blood

2 weeks ago, True Blood on HBO hit a record number of estimated viewers, at 4.3 million. But then last weekend they dusted the record books again and the show brought in an estimated 4.4 million pairs of eyeballs, breaking their own personal best.

It is an awesome, well-written show and I am not surprised that they’re pulling in the viewers.

House

For you Cameron and Chase fans from House, good news: They’re going to be back in their old jobs and off the sidelines. Of course, nothing comes easy and with them working side-by-side, that may put some strain on their brand new marriage!

We’ll also be seeing Foreman filling in as the top doc while Dr. Gregory House is on “leave,” which promises to be a rocky transition for Foreman.

As far as Cuddy and House go, don’t be sitting on the edge of your seat waiting for anything to develop anytime soon between them. Despite the tease of the imaginary hook-up, the showrunners are taking a step back and letting this premise simmer for a while.

Of course it all makes sense, right? They want us to go stir crazy, but really, speaking of crazy, House does have to sort out a few things as he tries to re-balance his sanity. He’s apparently not going to have an easy time of it.

NCIS

According to sources, be sure you do not miss the very first minute of NCIS when it starts up its new season. According to exec producer Shane Brennan, you’re going to be asking yourself if you’re seeing things or not!

Ratings

Well, without really digging up a lot of info, amongst all the reality shows, repeats of NCIS (3rd with 9.9 million viewers), CSI:NY (9th w/ 8 mil viewers), CSI Miami (11th), The Mentalist (13th) & CSI (15th) eeked out their spots in the top 20.

On cable, Burn Notice, The Closer, Royal Pains and Monk chipped out 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 6th respectively amongst the top 10 cable shows.

Supernatural 2009 Comic-Con Panel

In attendance for the 2009 Comic-Con Supernatural panel were Eric Kripke, Misha Collins, Jim Beaver, Sara Gamble and Ben Edlund.

This is Misha Collins and Jim Beavers’ first ever Comic-Con appearances.

The preview opened up with the Ghost Facers doing what they do best, and that’s trying to steal the show. Then they remembered that they were supposed to be introducing Supernatural. Very funny.

They recapped old scenes with the usual awesome classic rock song accompaniment of Judas Priest, “You’ve Got Another Thing Comin’.”

The preview clip we got was called “Sympathy For The Devil.” The Winchester brothers are examining a wrecked room, which turned out to be Chuck’s (The prophet writer) house. Chuck was telling them that Cas (Castiel) got wasted by the archangel.

Then Zachariah and two other angels were in the room, tying to tell Dean it’s time to do their bidding. Meanwhile Dean does nothing but call him names like ass-hat and other funny terms. In this short clip, Dean banishes these 3 angels with a blood symbol on the wall, much like the one Cas showed him in the season 4 finale.

After that, we got into some details on the show.

The creative forces tossed around the idea of how to bring Castiel back, but then they reassured us that Misha will be back in his trench coat. But. (Yep, there’s a but.) The Archangel wasted Castiel, so when he comes back, will he be the same? It was noted that being blown up changes you. He’s lost some angel mojo and lost some of his friends in higher places. Castiel has an ambitious mission he’s on, but in the process, he has to learn to be human and Dean does what he does best, and helps Castiel do that by taking him to a whore house. Typical.

Jim Beaver has a tee-shirt on that says “I do all my own stunts.”

Old friends and old hunters like Rufus will be back, as will Ellen and her daughter Joe. Meg will also be back in the season opener played by Rachel Miner.

Episode 4 goes into the future and takes a look at the apocalypse. It’s like their 28 Days Later episode, but 5 years down the road. They said that seeing the end of the world was a cool script.

Someone asked if Ruby knew she was tricking Sam? She was always a bad guy and her motivation was to drive the boys apart. The writers tried to make Ruby likable so they could pull the rug out from under us.

Someone wanted to know who changed the voice mail message that Dean heard on his cell, but like in many panels, they didn’t answer and just said that it’s just something that will be left open.

Lucifer roaming the Earth is a bit on the funny side at times. During the apocalypse, they note that the pandas are finally gone!

The brothers do come back together with season 5.

Because of their reduced budget, they called this the Walmart apocalypse because of their reduced budget.

In this weeks TV Wrap Up, I’ve found casting news about Stargate Universe, Supernatural, Psych, Friday Night Lights, Smallville, Criminal Minds and Stephen King’s book-turned-tv-series, Cell!

As usual, I have a ratings recap at the bottom, but it’s the Summer Lite edition being as how we’re in repeat mode for the Summer (except for the reality drabble that is intertwined throughout the chart).

Let’s “git ‘er done“, shall we?

Stargate Universe

Stargate Universe is looking to cast a “name actress” to play the wife of Robert Carlyle’s character.

These will be flashback scenes since she will be dead by the time we see her.

Supernatural

The CW’s Supernatural is adding a recurring role of a possessed mechanic named Raphael. He’s supposedly going to be possessed by one of the most powerful entities in the universe.

Psych

David Naughton (An American Werewolf in London) has signed up to appear in the Halloween episode of Psych. He’ll be playing a one Dr. Ken Tucker, who is a self-serving sociopath!

Season 4 of Psych will be starting on August 7th.

Friday Night Lights

Casting has begun for season 4 of Friday Night Lights. As high school students graduate, they move on. So too must Adrianne Palicki, Zach Gilford, and Minka Kelly.

The rolls they’re looking to fill are named Vince, Luke, Jess and Becky.

I’ll miss watching Palicki on FNL, but she’s moving onto Supernatural, so I won’t go through any withdrawals.

Smallville

Word on the street is that the upcoming season of Smallville will have a full on Clark and Lois romance going. I know many of you are of mixed opinions on this issue, but we’ll just have to take what they give us and hope we don’t suffer too much from any forced acting or stretched out story lines.

I guess this means Lois comes back from where ever she went last season.

Oops, does that make this a SPOILER? Sorry.

Criminal Minds

If you’re wondering if Hotch survived the season finale – heck, I don’t know! But what I’ve read is that they are casting for the role of an emergency room doctor.

That can’t be bad news. Can it?

Stephen King’s Cell

So how do you get turned into a rampaging killer? Quite possibly by a signal sent through your cell phone, according to Stephen King.

His novel Cell is being taken up by John Harrison (Tales From The Darkside: The Movie) who is putting together a script for a 4-hour mini-series based on the book.

I don’t know about you, but hopefully Harrison will figure out how to liven up the ending. I’ve always found endings to King’s movies lacking something, but could never put a finger on it. But that’s just me.

TV Ratings

On the big networks, CBS took the majority of the top spots, with NCIS once again ranking supreme in the ratings. The Mentalist & CSI: Miami were the other crime dramas filling out the top-10.

Trivia: Did you know that ABC turned down the CSI franchise when it was being shopped around? Oops.

In the oddity department, I’m almost relieved to see that Big Brother premiered in 18th. For me, it shows that at least one more reality cornerstone is slowly losing its grip on the viewers. My exuberance is short lived though, as I realize the other reality competition shows for dancing and singing are still ranking up there.

On Cable, The Closer keeps closing the door on the other shows, Royal Pains is hanging in there, while the Michael Jackson memorial dominated the top 20 in different slots, as each hour of the event was broken down and placed in the rankings.

Supernatural Season 5 Casting Updates

Supernatural has a wild season coming up with the Winchester brothers going head to head with Satan / Lucifer / the Devil. No matter how much we like and root for the Winchesters, I’m not sure how they’re going to pull off taking on the man from down below himself.

With season five dealing with what comes of the final seal being broken, we’re going to be seeing some new faces and a few old faces.

This should be interesting.

Mark Pellegrino

Of the new faces, I know of at least one right now: Mark Pellegrino has been cast to play Lucifer for his day trip to our reality. As if Lucifer isn’t a pain in the backside, guess who’s coming to dinner also?

Remember the demon Meg with the giant chip on her shoulder for the Winchesters? She’s baaack, and I’m guessing she still has that grudge. Rachel Miner has been cast in the role of Meg.

Adrianne Palicki

There’s also a face from an early season making a return trip to the show and that’s Adrianne Palicki.

If you don’t remember, she played Sam’s ex, Jessica, who was smite by a demon, much like the Winchesters mother was.

She was on Friday Night Lights, but she’s moving on while the show continues to focus on the students of Dillon High. High School being the operative word.

She did return once in season 2 of Supernatural during an alternate reality bit, but she’s returning to the show and the details are very quiet right now.

I can’t begin to imagine exactly what capacity she is returning as. Will it be flashbacks? Or will it be in spirit form? Or will she have been pulled from wherever by some PTB (Powers That Be) to come back to this Earthly realm to help, or hinder Sam?

Oh I hate when I perturb myself with these kinds of questions.

PS: Palicki was cast for the role of Jennifer Grey in the Red Dawn reboot. Ooh, now I have to see it! It’s great to see her getting so much work. I do enjoy her characters.

Last year at the 2008 San Diego Comic-Con, the event was ruled by several big named movies that ranged from youthful vampires to illegal vigilantes. TV was more a side-note than anything else.

This year at the 2009 Comic-Con, things will be a bit different as television programming seems to have a bigger presence than last year.

For instance, the Warner Brothers Television Group will have 11 different panels for their shows. That’s a studio best for them. ABC Studios will have 7 panels. 20th Century Fox will have 9 panels.

Do you think your favorite television show will be represented?

This year, I’m ready… I hope. So in preparation, I’ve started sifting through the network press releases and other resources, pulling it all together for myself. I decided… OK, maybe I was nudged a bit by Vic, to actually put it all prep info together here, for you, our loyal readers.

The CW Fall 2009 TV Premiere Dates & Times

The CW Announced their 2009 Fall Schedule and it’s actually pretty thin as far as shows go compared to other networks. But they do have a few shows we do want to see: Smallville and Supernatural.

The CW doesn’t exactly fall into the category of power television with the likes of America’s Next Top Model or 90210 and such fare, but they do have a couple of shows that Screen Rant readers appreciate. Yet I’m sure you’d like to know what they have in store for their viewing audiences for the upcoming 2009 Fall season.

Not being able to leave well enough alone after 90210, The CW is rebooting and premiering Melrose Place.

For Gossip Girl and One Tree Hill fans, be alert. They’ve swapped time slots.

Vampire Diaries is a new show starting up and is the lead-in to Supernatural. I’m going to have another article on Vampire Diaries coming up pretty soon, so stay tuned for that.

Smallville starts its slow ratings death when it starts up on Friday’s. (Do. Not. Get. Me. Started.)

There’s a show not on the schedule that will start at a later date called Life UneXpected.

The way The CW is treating Smallville, I guess those contract negotiations with Welling may have only been for one additional year and if I didn’t know any better, I’d say they aren’t expecting it to go beyond next season.

Be sure to set your DVR’s accordingly. I am looking forward to Supernatural and I’m going to give Vampire Diaries a chance. Not sure how much of one, but I will. I swear, if they start this show and try to pack each character’s history into the first 5 minutes of their appearance, I’m jumping ship! To me that is a sign of insecure plot development.

Are Smallville And Supernatural Ending Next Season?

With Smallville moving to Fridays and Supernatural getting a new vampire neighbor on Thursday nights, what does the future look like for both shows?

Various factors have me thinking “bleak.”

As we know, Smallville is moving to the dreaded ratings vacuum called Friday night. As far as I’m concerned, it’s a place networks put shows they don’t care about. We all saw how Friday night killed viewer numbers for The Sarah Connor Chronicles when it was moved there. And TSCC had more viewers than Smallville.

Back on Thursdays, The Vampire Diaries will be the lead-in to Supernatural in the 9 o’clock hour. This isn’t necessarily the doom of the show, but we need to remember that Eric Kripke had a 5 year story outline for the Supernatural. Yet on the down side of things, the Winchester brothers will be up against Fringe on Thursdays at 9 – that alone makes puts Supernatural’s fate into question.

CW entertainment president Dawn Ostroff is also saying “We’ll see how the season goes,” in regards to Supernatural continuing beyond a 5th season, as if they’re not paying any heed to Kripke’s plan.

With the break-up of a great duo and the stiff competition that Fox is bringing to Thursdays, it does look like the next seasons of Smallville and Supernatural could be a little bleak in the ratings department.

Smallville: A Quote To Remember

I had to toss this out for later reference at the end of the 2009/10 season of Smallville.

CW entertainment president Dawn Ostroff is being noted as saying that if Smallville delivers more viewers than some previous Friday night shows like Everybody Hates Chris and The Game, that that would be super.

Does this mean super as in good, we’ll keep it around or super as in, it’s just super it did that, but we’re going to let it simmer and steam out from there?

Is it me, or does this all sound like lip-service in a weak attempt to retain viewers?

2009 CW Fall TV Line Up

The CW released their 2009 lineup on Thursday, May 21st, following all the other network announcements this week. The lineup has a few new shows, is down a couple of fan-favorite shows and has one schedule twist that surprised me, sort of.

The CW is now a power hitter in the chain of networks. Their best rated show, America’s Next Top Model doesn’t even break the top 50 network shows. I know… you’re shocked.

Despite the obvious numbers, Dawn Ostroff calls their lineup of shows “culturally current, quality programming.” I guess that’s not inaccurate.

They only had 2 new shows to boast about, if you can call it boasting.

The revamped Melrose Place redo, and the thinly disguised Twilight copy, called Vampire Diaries. It’s about teenage vampires. I know. We’ve never heard that theme before.

Aside from adding the two aforementioned shows, they’ve pulled (that’s canceled in street talk.) Privileged and Reaper. For some reason they’d rather play an encore of dolls in heels (ANTM) on Friday’s than keep and air Reaper.

This tells me where their bread is buttered.

The other crazy news that came from The CW is that they’re adding the new Vampire Diaries in the time slot that Smallville had, and skewering Smallville by moving it to Friday nights where it will be the lead-in for the encore of America’s Next Top Model. If Vampire Diaries flounders, this move is going to gravely injure both Supernatural and Smallville.

Supernatural will be hurt because Diaries is the lead-in show. Smallville, because they’re getting the Foxed / Joss Whedon treatment.

Their programming outline has been referred to as narrow fem-driven strategy. It’s not a bad strategy as the demographic of women do make just as powerful a spending impact as men. We all blow money equally. Yet this strategy seems to work better on networks that have successful ratings from other shows that draw viewers in. I think it’s narrow-visioned, but that’s just me, the armchair network exec talking.

Welcome to Screen Rant’s weekly TV Update.

It seems that I’ve reported most of the developing TV news throughout the week. I’m exhausted but I still dug up a few more bits about the Gossip Girl spin-off, a Chuck tidbit, the move that Smallville is making.

And I’ve got the usual set of numbers for the ratings from last week.

Onward, my fair readers.

Gossip Girl Spin-off

The news is fickle and iffy that the Gossip Girl spin-off, tentatively titled Lily will happen. Over the front half of the week, sources say it’s dead in the water. Yet on Wednesday other sources are saying it’s not dead yet. We’ll find out for sure today (Thursday).

The source that says it is dead has been pretty accurate this week, so for the moment, I am leaning towards DOA.

Chuck And Subway

Will that be white or wheat?

Concessions have been the name of the game in getting shows renewed. Yes, it is a tough economy but things are still moving forward.

In the case of Chuck, NBC made a marketing deal with Subway.

Subway will become part of the show where one character will be working at the franchise. We’ll all be hungry for our Veggie-Delights after Chuck it may seem.

The CW Is Moving Smallville

To what night am I moving?

In a bit of preemptive news, The CW is splitting up the pair of shows Supernatural and Smallville that have been the mainstays for Thursday nights on The CW.

Part of the situation is that The CW is bringing in a new show called Vampire Diaries to take the place of Smallville.

Yes, you read right. Smallville is moving to Friday nights. When I found out, I twittered the following: “Smallville to Fridays? Has Fox taken over The CW?”

The hope by The CW is that the 3 million regular viewers will follow Smallville to Friday nights to give them some presence on the worst TV night of the week.

Laughingly, Smallville will be followed up by an encore showing of America’s Next Top Model.

It really sounds like The CW is giving the show the shovel. We saw that moving The Sarah Connor Chronicles lost over 1/2 their viewers when it was moved to Friday nights. Not to mention it will be up against Ghost Whisperer who sort of owns Friday nights, and is now teamed up with Medium and Numbers.

Statistically speaking, I think Smallville will be dead in the water with this move. Maybe they know something we don’t about next season.

FYI: Reaper is being reported as canceled. Sorry Reaper fans.

Stop Me If You’ve Heard This Before

The new show that The CW is swapping into Smallville’s place is called Vampire Diaries. It’s about high school students specifically… (Have we heard this one yet?) and is about a girl who’s torn between two vampire brothers.

Sounds like a cheap effort to try and capitalize on the various vampire franchises popping up over night. get it? Over night. That was a pun. Sorry.

This highly original television programing is based on novels written by L.J. Smith.
