In addition to capitalizing on the unprecedented popularity that superhero movies currently enjoy, the upcoming series reboots The Amazing Spider-Man and The Man of Steel will no doubt attempt to breathe new life into familiar mythos by approaching the heroes’ origin stories from some new, audacious angle.

But recent plot revelations regarding both films are beginning to raise the question: how many changes to the source material are too many?

It goes without saying that, from here on out, we’ll be presenting MILD SPOILERS for both The Amazing Spider-Man and Man of Steel – so, if you don’t want to know anything about the films, best to turn away now.

Even with The Avengers raking in the dough around the globe – and titles like The Amazing Spider-Man and Dark Knight Rises readying to hit the scene over the impending months – some comic book fans are already looking ahead to the future slate of superhero movies on the horizon.

Marvel has two releases due out in 2013 (Iron Man 3, Thor 2), but the most-buzzed about (in good and bad ways) comic book title due out next year is Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel.

In between anticipation for 2012 superhero films like The Avengers and The Dark Knight Rises, there’s been question about the next big comic book blockbuster on the way, which is Zack Snyder’s (Watchmen) reboot of the Superman movie franchise, Man of Steel.

Set photos and official images aside, what we’ve learned about Man of Steel so far has come primarily from the words and opinions of the cast and crew – and today continues this trend. With The Avengers, Amazing Spider-Man, and Dark Knight Rises all occupying the minds of superhero movie fans right now, it’s sometimes hard to remember that this little guy called Superman has his own movie coming out next summer – but indeed, Man of Steel is on the way.

While director Zack Snyder continues production on his highly-anticipated (and much-debated) reboot of the Superman movie franchise, we’ll have to settle for promo materials like today’s Man of Steel banner to sate our appetites.

Despite the fact that the blogosphere has been inundated with set photos and interviews pertaining to Man of Steel, Zack Snyder’s take on Superman is still more than a year away. By the time this film finally arrives, will we already know everything there is to know about it?

After this year’s The Avengers, The Amazing Spider-Man, and The Dark Knight Rises, Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel is the next major superhero movie on deck. But will it be any good?

Obviously, it’s impossible to know this far in advance, but the one thing the filmmakers have (arguably) nailed is the casting.

One of the more promising things about having Zack Snyder serve as director on Man of Steel is that the comic book franchise reboot is guaranteed to feature some impressively massive and awe-inspiring fight sequences between the new Kal-El (Henry Cavill) and General Zod (Michael Shannon).

We’ve never really been able to see anything like that before in previous live-action Superman movies, due to either the limitations of effects technology at the time of their production, or the absence of an equally-powered foe for Supes in the film (as was the case with Superman Returns).

It seems that, as far as news concerning director Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel went, the last month (or so) of 2011 was devoted primarily to disproving rumors about the Superman franchise revamping. Hence, we now know that Hans Zimmer is not set as composer, that the film’s release date has not been pushed back yet again, and that Bradley Cooper will not be making a glorified cameo as the diabolical Lex Luthor in the film.

Update: Warner Bros. has reached out to debunk rumors of release date changes for Man of Steel and The Hobbit. Details below.

Up until this summer, Zack Snyder’s reboot of the Superman film franchise was targeting a December 2012 release date, giving Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment not one, but two tentpole superhero films next year, the other being The Dark Knight Rises in July. Then, Warner Bros. pushed Man of Steel back a full six months to the new release date of July 13, 2013.

Hans Zimmer Discusses ‘Dark Knight Rises’ Score; Not Onboard For ‘Man of Steel’

Oscar-winner Hans Zimmer previously collaborated with James Newton Howard on the scores for both Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. However, he is the sole composer working on filmmaker Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy finale, The Dark Knight Rises.

Zimmer was doing press rounds for Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows when he opened up a bit about his approach to scoring the third installment in Nolan’s Caped Crusader saga. He also addressed long-standing rumors that he is locked to provide musical accompaniment for director Zack Snyder’s Superman franchise reboot, Man of Steel, which Nolan helped lay the narrative foundation for (he’s receiving story-writing credit) and is serving as a producer on.

Former Screen Rant writer Jamie Williams is dropping a big exclusive over at his site Think McFly Think. Word is that Warner Bros. is so impressed with the early results of Zack Snyder’s Superman reboot, Man of Steel, that they’re already looking ahead toward getting the balling rolling on a sequel.

Specifically, the studio is said to have commissioned some high-profile writers to begin scripting the story to Man of Steel 2, and we’ve got word on who is doing the job.

Despite the fact that we’ve seen a multitude of set photos from Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel, we know relatively little about the overall plot aside from “Superman origin story + Superman VS. General Zod” (and a scant few other details).

That might be starting to change, if a recent report about the film’s climax is to be believed. Two things to keep in mind before reading ahead: 1) Take this information with a semi-truck-sized grain of salt until official confirmation comes along. 2) MAJOR POTENTIAL SPOILERS AHEAD.

Security around the Vancouver shooting location for Zack Snyder’s Superman reboot, Man of Steel, is certainly less than airtight – seeing how over the past couple of days, we’ve gotten our first glimpse at Russell Crowe in costume as Jor-El and a bearded Henry Cavill in plainclothes as Clark Kent/Kal-El.

Even more photos from Man of Steel‘s Canadian shoot have emerged online, offering fans a look at another major character: Supe’s lady love, Lois Lane (Amy Adams). ‘Man of Steel’ Set Photos Feature Bearded Superman

Just like Warner Bros.’ other highly-anticipated DC comic book movie – The Dark Knight Rises – there have been numerous photos snapped on the set of Zack Snyder’s Superman reboot, Man of Steel.

We’ve already gotten a decent (albeit, unpolished) look at the costumes for most of the film’s big players – including, Henry Cavill as Superman, Michael Shannon as General Zod, and, most recently, Russell Crowe as Jor-El.

The latest paparazzi pics taken from the Man of Steel set aren’t going to stir up trouble like those featuring the aforementioned actors in their respective costumes – however, they do raise some questions about certain turns in the film’s plot.

‘Man of Steel’ Set Photos Reveal Russell Crowe’s Jor-El Costume

Fans are becoming more and more intrigued (if not outright excited) by Zack Snyder’s upcoming Superman reboot, Man of Steel, which is boldly attempting re-introduce the character of Superman to the world in ways we haven’t seen before (for better or worse).

Adding to the gallery of Man of Steel photos we already have – which have pretty much been amateur paparazzi shots snapped on the set of the film – is today’s image, which features one of the re-imagined characters of Snyder’s Superman universe that fans have been waiting to see: Russell Crowe as Superman’s dad, Jor-El.

The Jor-El images comes our way courtesy of Daily UK, which caught Crowe in between takes as he stepped out for a smoke break. Thankfully he was still in his Jor-El costume, or this wouldn’t even really be news…
