What really constitutes a “disappointment” is pretty subjective. To use a couple of examples: some people would say they were really let down by Captain America: The First Avenger or Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, simply because the films weren’t as fantastic as they had hoped. Others, though, would argue those titles are still rock-solid films and that certain moviegoers’ expectations were so overblown that no motion picture could possibly meet them. But that’s a whole other discussion…

Today, we have a list of 10 films released in 2011 that simply failed to live up to the Screen Rant staff’s collective expectations. Bear in mind, this isn’t at all synonymous with a “worst of” list for 2011 – in fact, you may notice that a handful of the movies listed here actually received decent reviews from ...

Click to continue reading The 10 Most Disappointing Movies of 2011

June closes out with a few worthy titles hitting DVD and Blu-ray. There is at least one epic trilogy and one epic disappointment amongst the bunch.

Some AMC Theater locations have shown The Lord of the Rings extended cuts recently, in honor of this week’s release. Many of the fans held out when the theatrical cuts reached Blu-ray and that patience will finally pay off. This is the week that one of the most legendary trilogies of all time hits Blu-ray – again.

In addition to the epic LOTR trilogy, the epic disappointment that was Sucker Punch hits Blu-ray alongside another relative flop, Season of the Witch. If you are still looking for a title you like, Jumanji on Blu-ray may do the trick.

The following titles can be found on DVD and Blu-ray.

Russell Brand and James Marsden Hop to the top of the box office; Time Bandits and The Long Good Friday go from Handmade to remade films; Justin Beiber and Ashton Kutcher ask What Would Kenny Do?; Antoine Fuqua dusts off the shoulder pads for Dynasty (well, sort of) ; a new writer takes a bite at Piranha 3DD and Keira Knightley makes friends with Steve Carell for The End of the World.

Box Office

Hop topped the box office after grossing an estimated $38 million this weekend. The CGI/live action hybrid featuring X-Men’s James Marsden and the voice of Russell Brand quietly surpassed studio expectations despite mediocre reviews. Personally, I’m not a fan of this genre and can’t fathom why anybody would be interested in making this, although I am fully aware that family films can make serious money at the box office – despite their (often) poor ...

Click to continue reading Weekend Movie News Wrap Up: April 3rd, 2011

Does the poor reception of Zack Snyder's 'Sucker Punch' mean trouble for the director's next project, the Superman reboot movie 'Man of Steel'? Join us as we discuss the issue.

Right now the Interwebs are all ablaze with debate over Zack Snyder’s Sucker Punch, which debuted this past weekend (read our review HERE). The film – previously heralded as one of the most anticipated films of 2011 – ultimately got KO’d as both a critical and financial dud.

That hard hit already has the fanboy community clogging website comment threads with prophecies of doom in regards to Snyder’s next film, the Superman reboot, Man of Steel.

Here at Screen Rant we’ve recently been critical of the fickle opinions of fanboys when it comes to comic book movies, and the reactions to each casting and/or development announcement about Man of Steel have certainly proven some of our criticisms. Every single decision about this Superman movie seems to piss off a section of the fanboy nation: <a ...

Click to continue reading Does ‘Sucker Punch’ Spell Doom For ‘Superman: Man of Steel’?

Box Office

Zack Snyder’s Sucker Punch received a… sucker punch on its release by Diary Of A Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules. The family film should out gross Snyder’s latest fantasy flick by about $5 million. The $19 million debut of Sucker Punch is in line with Warner Bros’ (lowered) expectations. The film received mixed reviews (read ours here) and it looks like it might not connect with an audience for the long haul. Warner Bros. rolled a dice on this (much like they did with Chris Nolan’s Inception) and while it might not have ...

Click to continue reading Weekend Movie News Wrap Up: March 27th, 2011

Audiences have been anticipating Zack Snyder’s multilateral fantasy-action extravaganza Sucker Punch for months, if not years, and this weekend the visual spectacle finally sweeps into theaters (read our official review HERE). With the creation of the Sucker Punch, the filmmakers intended to construct a reality inhabited by sexy, vulnerable, dimensional women-warriors; a place where the possibilities for action are boundless.

In order to achieve said goal, Snyder assembled a cast of beautiful up-and-coming young actresses, and then put them through months of brutally rigorous training in preparation for the elaborate production. This past weekend we had the opportunity to speak with the ladies of Sucker Punch – Emily Browning (Baby Doll), Abbie Cornish (Sweet Pea), Jena Malone (Rocket), Jamie Chung (Amber) and Vanessa Hudgens (Blondie), about their experiences making an action film that called for them to dance, ...

Click to continue reading Interview: The Stars Of ‘Sucker Punch’ On Becoming Woman Warriors

While our readers are already discussing director Zack Snyder’s fantasy-action story of self-empowerment in the comments section of the Sucker Punch review, this is the place where you can discuss spoilers about the movie without worrying about ruining it for people who haven’t seen it yet.

To help steer discussion we’ve added an analysis of Sucker Punch to help clarify some of the details that left some moviegoers scratching their heads.

That said, Snyder does leave some elements of the film up for interpretation – making it impossible to answer everything with absolute certainty.

It goes without saying, this article is full of spoilers. So, if you still plan to see the film, and don’t want anything spoiled for you – look elsewhere.

Screen Rant’s Ben Kendrick reviews Sucker Punch

For many moviegoers, Zack Snyder seemingly exploded onto the scene with his visually striking adaptation of Frank Miller’s 300 – with Snyder both penning the screenplay and directing the film. The combination of Miller’s imagination and what we now know as Snyder’s trademark slow-motion/action choreography, resulted in an exciting and brutal film that paved the way for the director to tackle other high-profile existing properties, including Watchmen and the upcoming Superman: Man of Steel.

Sucker Punch, however, is entirely Snyder’s invention – earning the director his first original story credit. With Superman reboot fervor (and fear) at an all time high, not to mention the response to Snyder’s middle-of-the-road Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole, many film fans are looking to Sucker Punch as a ...

Click to continue reading Sucker Punch Review

In less than two weeks’ time, director Zack Snyder will unleash his latest cinematic feast full of stunning action and eye-catching imagery, Sucker Punch, on moviegoers. The film promises to definitely look spectacular and boast even more in the way of creative visuals concocted by the 300 and Watchmen helmer.

An animated Sucker Punch tie-in short titled “The Trenches” has been released to further heighten excitement for Snyder’s new picture, and it’s a stylish little clip. This short doesn’t offer any additional insight about the film’s plot or its characters – but then again, neither one of those things are really selling points for Sucker Punch, are they?

Here’s an official synopsis for Snyder’s film, to refresh your memory:

[Update: We've added a new Underworld 4 pic of Kate Beckinsale!]

Today marks the beginning of a new weekly feature we are introducing here at Screen Rant – the movie image roundup! We’ve done image posts in the past, but they often only focus on two or three films at a time and usually only some of the bigger and more recognizable upcoming movies.

We’re changing that formula up by taking all the stills, concept art and behind-the-scenes photos we don’t single out during the week and consolidating them into one massive image post every Monday. These posts will have images from a multitude of genres including comedy, animation, romance, action, horror, sci-fi and drama – ensuring there is something for everyone to enjoy.

With the line-up of films coming out in March, one would think we’re getting an early start to the summer movie season. Alongside heavy hitters Rango and Battle: Los Angeles, there is of course Zack Snyder’s latest visual spectacle, Sucker Punch.

Taking his trademark stylized cinematography and slow-motion action work to an entirely new extreme, Sucker Punch tells the tale of Baby Doll’s forced admittance into a prison-like mental asylum. To avoid being lobotomized, Baby Doll (Emily Browning) teams up with several other girls in captivity to plan their escape by drifting into a fantasy dream world.

The first Sucker Punch trailer that debuted at San Diego Comic-Con caught the attention of everyone who saw it, showing us something we were entirely unprepared for.
Zack Snyder’s name has been in the news of late, due to his Superman reboot snagging its Man of Steel.
Warner Bros. has released two television spots for the film, which secured a spot on our 20 Most Anticipated Movies of 2011 list and should kick off the upcoming spring movie season in, if nothing else, plenty of style.

Both films made a big introductory splash at San Diego Comic-Con last summer to the most hardcore of movie geeks and since then, have both had very intense, action-packed and downright cool movie trailers.

As both films prepare for March releases, we’ve seen as much as we can from the trailers and photos thus far without spoiling either. If you’re as excited as we are about either, check out the six brand new posters for Sucker Punch and Battle: Los Angeles, the latter which is internationally known as World Invasion: Battle Los Angeles. You know, because it needs to be emphasized that it’s not all about America.

A sleek black automobile that’s been enhanced with machine guns, rocket launchers, and beanie bag throwers (you read that correctly); gorgeous young women armed to the teeth for combat; and a big, blonde, bearded superhuman carrying his deadly hammer are on display in today’s movie poster roundup.

There’s a new one-sheet for this week’s release, The Green Hornet; an elaborate banner for Zack Snyder’s upcoming Sucker Punch; and a French poster for the comic book flick that will kick off the Summer 2011 movie season, Thor, to check out as well.

Director Michel Gondry’s The Green Hornet gets the honor of being the first anticipated tentpole pic to be released in 2011 (sorry, Season of the Witch). Evan Goldberg co-wrote the radio serial/TV show/comic book movie adaptation with his Superbad pal Seth Rogen, who also ...

Click to continue reading Movie Poster Roundup: ‘Green Hornet’, ‘Sucker Punch’, ‘Thor’

Check out three new images from Zack Snyder's highly-anticipated action/fantasy film, 'Sucker Punch,' and admire the attention to detail.

Zack Snyder is one of those directors that you either love or hate. If you don’t think that’s true, just listen to someone who liked Watchmen talk to someone who didn’t like it. The conversation can get pretty heated.

I happen to fall into the “love him” camp. In my opinion, Snyder’s hyper-stylized camera work and meticulous attention to set design really add a new dimension to his movies, even when the story-telling is somewhat lacking. That’s one of the reasons why I’m excited to see Snyder’s new action/fantasy film Sucker Punch.

Everything we’ve seen from Sucker Punch so far – from our first look at Comic-Con to the most recent Sucker Punch trailer – has cemented the film as one of our most anticipated movies of 2011. Recently, MovieWeb ...

Click to continue reading Three New Images from ‘Sucker Punch’

A featurette has been released for Zack Snyder's 'Sucker Punch' and it contains not-yet-glimpsed scenes of fast-hitting action and stylish visuals.

A mind is always a terrible thing to waste, but none more so than that belonging to Baby Doll (Emily Browning), the platinum-blonde young lady able to conjure up evocative images of red-eyed samurai, fire-breathing dragons and scantily-clad girls kickin’ some major butt in Zack Snyder’s Sucker Punch.

There’s a new featurette out for the film, which promises to showcase more of Snyder’s breed of hyper-stylized action and some astonishingly elaborate visuals that truly set Sucker Punch apart from most every other upcoming Hollywood F/X-driven production.

The first action-driven trailer and short clips from Snyder’s Sucker Punch offered a whole lot of bang for your buck and got movie lovers of all shades psyched, but the plot heavy second Sucker Punch theatrical preview was not quite as enthusiastically received. Snyder’s work has often (and not ...

Click to continue reading ‘Sucker Punch’ Featurette Full Of Visual Splendor
