What really constitutes a “disappointment” is pretty subjective. To use a couple of examples: some people would say they were really let down by Captain America: The First Avenger or Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, simply because the films weren’t as fantastic as they had hoped. Others, though, would argue those titles are still rock-solid films and that certain moviegoers’ expectations were so overblown that no motion picture could possibly meet them. DVD/Blu-ray Breakdown: June 28, 2011

June closes out with a few worthy titles hitting DVD and Blu-ray. There is at least one epic trilogy and one epic disappointment amongst the bunch.

Some AMC Theater locations have shown The Lord of the Rings extended cuts recently, in honor of this week’s release. Many of the fans held out when the theatrical cuts reached Blu-ray and that patience will finally pay off. This is the week that one of the most legendary trilogies of all time hits Blu-ray – again.

In addition to the epic LOTR trilogy, the epic disappointment that was Sucker Punch hits Blu-ray alongside another relative flop, Season of the Witch. If you are still looking for a title you like, Jumanji on Blu-ray may do the trick.

Hop topped the box office after grossing an estimated $38 million this weekend. The CGI/live action hybrid featuring X-Men’s James Marsden and the voice of Russell Brand quietly surpassed studio expectations despite mediocre reviews. Personally, I’m not a fan of this genre and can’t fathom why anybody would be interested in making this, although I am fully aware that family films can make serious money at the box office – despite their (often) poor ...

Does ‘Sucker Punch’ Spell Doom For ‘Superman: Man of Steel’?

Right now the Interwebs are all ablaze with debate over Zack Snyder’s Sucker Punch, which debuted this past weekend (read our review HERE). The film – previously heralded as one of the most anticipated films of 2011 – ultimately got KO’d as both a critical and financial dud.

That hard hit already has the fanboy community clogging website comment threads with prophecies of doom in regards to Snyder’s next film, the Superman reboot, Man of Steel.

Here at Screen Rant we’ve recently been critical of the fickle opinions of fanboys when it comes to comic book movies, and the reactions to each casting and/or development announcement about Man of Steel have certainly proven some of our criticisms. Every single decision about this Superman movie seems to piss off a section of the fanboy nation:

Audiences have been anticipating Zack Snyder’s multilateral fantasy-action extravaganza Sucker Punch for months, if not years, and this weekend the visual spectacle finally sweeps into theaters (read our official review HERE). While our readers are already discussing director Zack Snyder’s fantasy-action story of self-empowerment in the comments section of the Sucker Punch review, this is the place where you can discuss spoilers about the movie without worrying about ruining it for people who haven’t seen it yet.

For many moviegoers, Zack Snyder seemingly exploded onto the scene with his visually striking adaptation of Frank Miller’s 300 – with Snyder both penning the screenplay and directing the film. The combination of Miller’s imagination and what we now know as Snyder’s trademark slow-motion/action choreography, resulted in an exciting and brutal film that paved the way for the director to tackle other high-profile existing properties, including Watchmen and the upcoming Superman: Man of Steel.

Sucker Punch, however, is entirely Snyder’s invention – earning the director his first original story credit. ‘Sucker Punch’ Animated Short Teases The Real Thing

In less than two weeks’ time, director Zack Snyder will unleash his latest cinematic feast full of stunning action and eye-catching imagery, Sucker Punch, on moviegoers. The film promises to definitely look spectacular and boast even more in the way of creative visuals concocted by the 300 and Watchmen helmer.

An animated Sucker Punch tie-in short titled “The Trenches” has been released to further heighten excitement for Snyder’s new picture, and it’s a stylish little clip. This short doesn’t offer any additional insight about the film’s plot or its characters – but then again, neither one of those things are really selling points for Sucker Punch, are they?

With the line-up of films coming out in March, one would think we’re getting an early start to the summer movie season. Alongside heavy hitters Rango and Battle: Los Angeles, there is of course Zack Snyder’s latest visual spectacle, Sucker Punch.

Taking his trademark stylized cinematography and slow-motion action work to an entirely new extreme, Sucker Punch tells the tale of Baby Doll’s forced admittance into a prison-like mental asylum. To avoid being lobotomized, Baby Doll (Emily Browning) teams up with several other girls in captivity to plan their escape by drifting into a fantasy dream world.

Zack Snyder’s name has been in the news of late, due to his Superman reboot snagging its Man of Steel. Snyder will return to the spotlight next month with the release of his film Sucker Punch, an original adventure that promises to be full of imaginative visuals, fantastical action, and gorgeous women battling an array of dazzling CGI monstrosities.

Warner Bros. has released two television spots for the film, which secured a spot on our 20 Most Anticipated Movies of 2011 list and should kick off the upcoming spring movie season in, if nothing else, plenty of style.

With January ending today and nothing special to show for it from the film industry or box office, we take a look forward to the rest of 2011 and pick out the 20 movies we’re most excited about seeing on the big screen.

It was not an easy task, narrowing down our choices to 20 and ordering them - Just look at our complete 2011 movie guide to see the options – but we’ve done it and are left with a healthy mix of comedies, sci-fi films, comic book movies and a lot of action that will bring the hoards to the movie theaters.

So, before we look back and celebrate the best of 2010 at the Oscars, let’s look forward to Screen Rant’s Most Anticipated Movies of 2011.

New Sucker Punch & Battle: Los Angeles Posters

Two of the biggest pre-summer releases, which arguably should be summer releases, are that of Sucker Punch and Battle: Los Angeles. Both films made a big introductory splash at San Diego Comic-Con last summer to the most hardcore of movie geeks and since then, have both had very intense, action-packed and downright cool movie trailers.

As both films prepare for March releases, we’ve seen as much as we can from the trailers and photos thus far without spoiling either. If you’re as excited as we are about either, check out the six brand new posters for Sucker Punch and Battle: Los Angeles, the latter which is internationally known as World Invasion: Battle Los Angeles. You know, because it needs to be emphasized that it’s not all about America.

Zack Snyder is one of those directors that you either love or hate. If you don’t think that’s true, just listen to someone who liked Watchmen talk to someone who didn’t like it. The conversation can get pretty heated.

I happen to fall into the “love him” camp. In my opinion, Snyder’s hyper-stylized camera work and meticulous attention to set design really add a new dimension to his movies, even when the story-telling is somewhat lacking. That’s one of the reasons why I’m excited to see Snyder’s new action/fantasy film Sucker Punch.

A mind is always a terrible thing to waste, but none more so than that belonging to Baby Doll (Emily Browning), the platinum-blonde young lady able to conjure up evocative images of red-eyed samurai, fire-breathing dragons and scantily-clad girls kickin’ some major butt in Zack Snyder’s Sucker Punch.

There’s a new featurette out for the film, which promises to showcase more of Snyder’s breed of hyper-stylized action and some astonishingly elaborate visuals that truly set Sucker Punch apart from most every other upcoming Hollywood F/X-driven production.
