Collider‘s Steve “Frosty” Weintraub recently caught up with director Jonathan Mostow (Terminator 3, Surrogates) and talked to him about his progress with the long-rumored big-screen adaptation of the Marvel Comics character Prince Namor, also known as The Sub-Mariner.

Mostow wouldn’t say much on camera, however Weintraub (being the good ol’ nosy journalist he should be) managed to get some semi-solid info out of the director about where the Sub-Mariner project is, and where he hopes it will be going.

Namor has been labeled Marvel’s “first and mightiest mutant,” yet a film adaptation of the undersea superhero has never gotten off the ground. There was a brief animated Sub-Mariner TV series in the 60s, but who really remembers that?

It’s probably for this same reason that Marvel sold off the cinematic rights to the character to ...

Click to continue reading Sub-Mariner Movie Still Swimming Our Way?

In a recent interview promoting his new film Fast & Furious, muscle-man Vin Diesel spoke about which comic book characters he would like to play if he ever gets the chance. It’s no secret that Diesel is a bit higher on the geek-o-meter than you might think just by looking at him – for instance, it is publicly known he is a big Dungeons & Dragons fan (the board game, mind you… not the movie).

He already had his eye on Daredevil at one point, but we obviously know Ben Affleck landed the role instead. In the interview, Diesel has given some thoughts on which types of comic book characters he would like to play. Which are those? Well, namely Sub-Mariner and Doctor Doom.

He didn’t explicitly say he would like to play Doctor Doom, but a character much like him:

Holy cow, Marvel is planning on releasing a TON of superhero movies. Will they all be great? Not likely… I’m sure they’ll have some Ghost Riders in there, but on the other hand they may strike gold with some depending on who is writing and directing.

Here’s a quick breakdown of what’s in the pipeline beyond what’s already currently in production: Wolverine, Magneto, Punisher 2, Silver Surfer, Sub-Mariner, Thor, Avengers (maybe) and Captain America. Whew!

Kevin Feige of Marvel Studios did have one thing to say that gave me pause concerning their take on Captain America:

“We’ll have to play with Captain America as being a patriotic propaganda machine on one hand but also being a very human Steve Rogers interesting fascinating hero in his own right.”

Now I haven’t been a big follower of Cap over the years, but calling him a patriotic propaganda machine seems to me to be way ...

Click to continue reading Ton ‘O Marvel Superhero Movies On The Way
