Are They Making Mortal Kombat 3?

Ever heard of Chris Casamassa? Probably not, but you may have seen him. He’s the martial arts master who played the role of Scorpion in the first Mortal Kombat movie and in a few episodes of Mortal Kombat: Conquest, the TV series.

Fortunately, he wasn’t part of the terrible sequel, titled Annihilation. Come to think of it, the vast majority of the cast didn’t make it back for the sequel…

Well, Casamassa will be back as Scorpion again… in another Mortal Kombat movie. Who knew?

Alex over at First Showing picked up on a story by the SGV Tribune where they interviewed the martial artist/actor. Casamassa, who now instructs and is the president of Red Dragon Karate, revealed that he’s set to start shooting a third Mortal Kombat film this September. It was seemingly a general comment and they didn’t go into it at all as it wasn’t the focus of the piece.

If true, that’s only two months away and we’ve heard nothing about it. Is it some low-budget straight-to-DVD flick? Perhaps that’s the only way to go after the terrible outing of the latest Street Fighter movie.

Casamassa’s film experience is not limited to Mortal Kombat however. Between doing his professional Karate, he was George Clooney’s stunt double in everyone’s favorite Batman & Robin and he did some stunts for Blade among other minor appearances and film work. He was even in that show called WMAC Masters which I actually think I saw on TV when I was kid.

I’m glad the dude is getting some more film work but I don’t have any interest in another Mortal Kombat if it’s another low-budget sequel. The first movie was pretty cool and I liked it when I was younger for what it was (can you believe that was 14 years ago?). The second one I didn’t feel nearly as happy about and I can only imagine this one being even worse.

The idea of a of a third Mortal Kombat has been long-speculated where it was rumored Christopher Lambert could return as Rayden but there’s been absolutely nothing on that front for a long while. Him being in it would be a big plus though, and it would certainly help turn some frowns upside down.

If they do make another MK film, which is inevitable, they should start over again and focus in on the main characters. Most importantly, they need to have some truly awesome action sequences. The main problem with Street Fighter (among thousands) is that it’s a move strictly about fighting… with no cool fighting – So there’s no reason to see it.

Two brand new TV spots for Watchmen and Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li have popped up online; one amazing, one not so much – you can probably guess which one’s which.

Warner Brothers is sure pumping up the marketing as we get closer the release date of Watchmen (less than three weeks away!). This new short trailer is awesome and the background music is epic as always – They sure know how to make a good trailer! Remember how good The Dark Knight trailers were?

The other trailer is for Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li and nothing in it excites me. For a movie strictly based only on fighting, the fighting is poor compared to other movies like Ninja Assassin or even the few fight scenes we’ve seen from Watchmen.

Watchmen is directed By Zack Snyder and stars Billy Crudup, Carla Gugino, Patrick Wilson, Jackie Earle Haley, Matthew Goode, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Malin Akerman and Matt Frewer.

Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li is directed by Andrzej Bartkowiak and stars Kristin Kreuk, Chris Klein, Neal McDonough, Michael Clarke Duncan, Moon Bloodgood, Taboo and Robin Shou. I’m a pretty big fan of Neal McDonough from his roles in Band of Brothers, Minority Report and Star Trek: First Contact as well as Robin Shou from the Mortal Kombat movies but not even they can sell me on this film.

The Street Fighter movie’s release date is tied to the release of the next big video game in the series. Street Fighter IV hits shelves February 17 (two days from now) and The Legend of Chun-Li, comes outs ten days later on February 27, 2009.

Watchmen debuts shortly thereafter on March 6, 2009.

Some of these Street Fighter pictures may have already been out but I know that there are a bunch of new ones here. I still think this may turn out to be cheesy, but what’s interesting is that with every new trailer and batch of pictures this movie looks more and more serious.

New Street Fighter Movie Poster Is Fan-Made

After the wildly “artistic” poster and the fittingly-ignored original, Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li has decided to release yet another to rally support and generate buzz. But there’s just one problem, it’s boring and fails as well.

This latest poster features still characters (some unidentified), and an ancient scroll feel. The change in slogan is a good replacement for the weak tag line: “Some Fight for Power. Some Fight for Us.” The new phrases are closer to what it should be – after all this is (supposedly) one character’s story.

The supporting cast is framed vertically creating the back wall for the main character. Unlike the original, there’s no silhouette of two fighters doing battle. As a matter of fact, there’s no action at all. At the very least, Chun-Li should give us a kick or something.

Also, none of the characters look anything like they do in the game. But overall it ends up looking better than the confusing, white space overload of the last poster. It just doesn’t get me terribly excited to see this take on Street Fighter.

The only remotely interesting thing in the poster is Vega (coincidentally a character I’m looking forward to seeing). He has his trademark claw raised across his face – just like his character/icon in the game. Yes I know, I’m probably going to be wildly disappointed because he doesn’t really look like the snobbish bull-fighter he’s suppose to be. But even if they get his hair color wrong, I can still have some false hope.

The poster features Kristin Kreuk (Chun-Li), Michael Clarke Duncan (Balrog), Neal McDonough (M. Bison), Taboo (Vega), Robin Shou (Gen), and Chris Klein (Nash). You can see it below.

Bizarre New Street Fighter Movie Poster

A new poster for the newest live-action Street Fighter movie subtitled The Legend of Chun-Li has made its way online. The movie, directed by Andrzej Bartkowiak (Doom, Cradle 2 The Grave), is a PG-13 adaptation of the popular video game. It will star Kristin Kreuk, Michael Clarke Duncan, Neal McDonough, Taboo, Chris Klein, Moon Bloodgood, Edmund Chen, Cheng Pei Pei, Josie Ho and Robin Shou.

(Horrible) Street Fighter movie poster

It surprises me just how much that poster doesn’t work…

I can see what they’re going for – trying to be a bit different (edgier, perhaps?) than other films in the genre have been in the past, but it just looks cheesy and kind of silly (although it’s certainly better than the terrible first poster). To be honest it took me a few seconds to even notice there were two guys fighting on it, because I was so distracted by how cluttered it looks.

What confuses and annoys me about this whole project is why they would choose to center the story around Chun-Li. Ryu and Ken have always been the central figures in the overall Street Fighter story, not Guile (who they choose to focus on in the terrible Jean-Claude Van Damme version) and certainly not Chun-Li (yeah, I played the video game… can you tell?).

I guess they want an actress who’ll end up being little more than just eye-candy for all the Street Fighter fans out there (who, let’s face it, are predominantly male).

However I’m going to reserve judgment in part until we see more footage. The Street Fighter trailer doesn’t look too shabby if I’m being totally honest: Plenty of impressive wire-work and much needed kick-ass martial arts action. The lack of dialogue in the trailer might be hinting that it’s not where the movie’s strengths lie and that’s fine; no one is expecting Shakespeare from this thing. Just give us quality fight sequences and some cool characters and at least it’ll be worth the time for us action movie fans.

New (Japanese) ‘Street Fighter’ Trailer

There’s a new trailer online and it’s for Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li. Hey it’s Monday and the last week of the year, forgive us for not fabricating our own news. We’ll just keep our Batman 3 rumors to ourselves.

Up until now, we’ve heard and seen very little about this movie. And so far, what we have seen has been in Japanese. Today is no different – a trailer has debuted on the official (Japanese) site: StreetFighter-Movie.gyao.jp.

Is anyone else beginning to wonder whether this will be released anywhere other than Japan?

Produced by Fox, the live-action adaptation of Street Fighter arrives two months before Dragonball. Now I know what you’re thinking… but this one doesn’t look too bad (at least compared to what we’ve seen of the Dragonball movie so far). This trailer features some pretty sweet martial arts, intensive wire work, lots of slo-mo and a few explosions to top it all off. There’s little dialog, but what there is comes from M. Bison, giving us a first look at Neal McDonough (Traitor, TV’s Desperate Housewives) in the infamous role of would-be world dictator.

Since this movie is primarily about Chun-Li, the footage relies heavily on Kristin Kreuk stepping up and kicking ass. The Smallville star is finally stepping beyond her supporting Lana Lang role and into the limelight; as an early birthday present (hers is Dec. 30th), she’ll be watched over and over again by fanboys everywhere.

The trailer also provides glimpses of Michael Clarke Duncan (Sin City) as Balrog, Taboo (of the musical act Black Eye Peas) as Vega, and Robin Shou (Mortal Kombat) as Gen. So long as Van Damme won’t show up as Col. Guile, this might be a entertaining look at the first playable female character in a fighting game.

Lame New Poster For Street Fighter Movie

20th Century Fox has unveiled The Japanese website and first poster for the upcoming Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li. This doesn’t seem to have anything to do with to Jean-Claude Van Damme’s Street Fighter film of 1994 which I thought was pretty fun (and funny) as a 9 year old.

That being said, I probably couldn’t bear to watch the entire thing all the way through again without the aid of alcoholic beverages.

The Japanese website can be found at StreetFighter-Movie.gyao.jp although it has nothing on it other than this picture as of yet.

Street Fighter is based on the classic and once-super-popular Capcom video game franchise of the same name. It stars Kristin Kreuk of Smallville fame as the lead character Chun Li (played by Ming-Na in the original) and other recognizable actors including Neal McDonough, Michael Clarke Duncan, Moon Bloodgood and Chris Klein.

The poster doesn’t do much for me, but it does show that they’re sticking to the original costume for Chun Li’s character from the video games. The film apparently doesn’t feature main characters Ken and Ryu, and is instead an origin story for secondary character Chun-Li. The film also apparently sets up potential sequels if it manages to make any money. I look forward to seeing the first trailer for this film.

Capcom is attempting to revitalize the franchise by timing the release of the film to coincide with the release of the long-awaited Street Fighter 4 video game which is due out during the first quarter of 2009.
