Screen Rant owner Vic Holtreman originally founded this site with the intention of providing readers with a middle-ground/average person perspective on movie news and reviews – hence our old mantra “movie and TV news without the sugar coating.” While the site has certainly evolved – we now cover a wider range of genres and provide readers with a variety of diverse “voices” – our willingness to champion both entertaining and/or artistic movies (at least on a case by case basis) hasn’t changed.

Which is why we (Vic and myself) jumped at the chance to participate in Film School Reject‘s recent article the “10 Greatest Movies of All Time (According to the Internet).” Now the results are in.

Welcome to Screen Rant’s “Geek Picks,” where we collect the finest movie-related geekery from around the web for you. It’s that time of year again when all Star Wars fans geek out over the calendar date of May the 4th. Weekend Box Office Wrap Up: February 12th, 2012

This week’s box office continues in an upward trajectory, as four movies debuted to over $20 million! The leader of the pack was The Vow, a romantic drama, positioned for Valentine’s Day starring Channing Tatum and Rachel McAdams.

The film was always expected to take the top spot, but it surpassed expectations, grossing an impressive $41.7 million.

McAdams has become something of a chick-flick staple starring in the likes of The Notebook (final gross $81 million), The Time Traveller’s Wife ($63 million final tally) and Morning Glory (which topped out at $31 million). She’s also flexed her action muscles in Robert Downey Jr’s Sherlock Holmes movies, but this is the biggest start to a movie that she has top-lined. With Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace set to be re-released in theaters on February 10, 2012 in 3D, Lucasfilm launched “Darth Maul Me” – a feature that allows you to turn yourself into Darth Maul.

Considering we have a “No Sith Lord” rule at Screen Rant, we decided to see what would happen if 25 popular movies went to the dark side (and/or what would happen if Darth Maul got a hold of a time machine and wanted to trade in his dual lightsaber for a Hollywood career).

‘Star Wars: Episode 1′ Theater Events, Giveaways, & Exclusive 3D Glasses

Star Wars: Episode 1 – The Phantom Menace (and everyone’s favorite Lucas-creation Jar Jar Binks) is set to return to the big screen after just over a decade – this time with a 3D post-conversion. As with any Star Wars release (rerelease, special edition, rererelease, etc), die-hard fans are already polishing their stormtrooper cosplays, shining their lightsaber replicas, and dusting off their Darth Vader helmets in anticipation of midnight screenings and other special events.

To reward fans (and moviegoers alike) for their continued dedication to the series – Lucasfilm is preparing free Star Wars swag and special events to coincide with the film’s 3D rerelease on February 10th.

Like many subjects of discussion and/or debate these days, popular opinion on the subject of George Lucas is staunchly divided. On the one side, there are those who feel that the Star Wars creator jumped the shark (for lack of a better term) over a decade ago, with the release of his oft-criticized Star Wars prequels. On the other hand, are those who feel that Lucas remains a filmmaking visionary who has captured the imaginations of a generation – albeit, a generation that came of age under the impression that computers are largely responsible for the fantastical worlds, characters and action sequences that we see in movies.

Sequels are definitely a mixed bag in terms of quality, but one of their advantages is an audience’s immediate connection and empathy towards a familiar and (hopefully) beloved character. No one really cares what’s inside the Temple of Doom or where the Holy Grail is hidden, they just want to go on another adventure with Indiana Jones.

Our interest and investment in these characters and their worlds often percolates in the years (or sometimes decades) between installments, and the opportunity to revisit them is often greeted with unmatched fervor – which makes it enormously disappointing as you watch a film unfold and realize that while the character on the big screen may look and sound the way you remember, something is… missing.

If there’s one inside-joke that resonates among all film geeks, it’s likely the never-ending parade of Star Wars saga tweaks and re-releases - implemented by creator/director George Lucas. As a result, it was hardly a surprise to hear that, shortly after the series released on blu-ray, the entire Star Wars saga would once again be returning to theaters – this time in 3D.

The Star Wars Saga is being released on Blu-Ray this Friday amidst controversy – as per usual for the once universally beloved series.

Why the controversy? Because for the third time in fourteen years, George Lucas has heaped somewhat significant changes upon his original classic films – A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi. It’s the week every Star Wars fan has been waiting for – or at least complaining about – since news of George Lucas’ latest milking of the legendary saga. But the Skywalker saga is not the only title worth your attention arriving on DVD and Blu-ray this week.

In addition to Star Wars, a number of television shows and some independent films make their way to home video. But Tuesday offers up another blockbuster as Thor comes to DVD and Blu-ray in both 2D and 3D. If that isn’t enough, one of cinema’s most cherished classics, Citizen Kane, hits Blu-ray as well.

John Dykstra has been around for a while. His first big break was in 1977 when he worked as the Special Photographic Effects Supervisor on Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope. Since then he has been a part of almost two dozen films, including Caddyshack, Spider-Man 1 & 2, Hancock, Inglourious Basterds and most recently, X-Men: First Class.

The visual effects master took some time to help promote the upcoming DVD and Blu-ray release of X-Men: First Class by sharing some his secrets and stories. It’s a fascinating interview if you have any interest in the evolution of visual effects from entirely practical to mostly digital.

No matter what type of Star Wars fan you are (original trilogy or complete saga), if you’re any kind of cinemaphille you’ve got to be at least somewhat excited for the release of the Star Wars: The Complete Saga Blu-ray collection this Fall.

The Star Wars Blu-ray release is a big enough deal to warrant its own trailer, and that is exactly what we have to share today.

Sure, this release is primarily for the continued fattening of George Lucas’ pockets, but for fans all over the world, there is something to enjoy in this preview. Namely: New footage from the Star Wars saga.
