New Clip and Hi-Res Image from ‘Splice’

We’ve got a new clip, a new hi-res image and some additional (read: old) images from Splice, the upcoming sci-fi/horror from director Vincenzo Natali (Cube). The film stars Adrien Brody and Sarah Polley (Dawn of the Dead) as two scientists who start playing with DNA splicing and have it all turn out well…or not.

The film has been making the festival rounds but still no word on when it might get a U.S. release. Hopefully the clip and these images provided by Bloody-Disgusting will help pique YOUR interests so that we can get a proper look at this film over here in the states.

Here’s the official synopsis for Splice:

Clive and Elsa are young, brilliant and ambitious. The new animal species they engineered have made them rebel superstars of the scientific world. In secret, they introduce human DNA into the experiment. The result is something that is greater than the sum of its parts: a female animal-human hybrid that may be a step up on the evolutionary ladder. They think they may have created the perfect organisim, until she makes a final shocking metamorphosis that could destroy them … and the rest of humanity.

Sounds kind of interesting, right? Let’s see how it looks:

Watching that I couldn’t help but imagine an uncooked Thanksgiving turkey suddenly jumping up out of the sink and running off, LOL! Still, some of the images you’re about to see let you know how serious things get for Clive and Elsa as their creature starts to – ahem – “mature.”

Finally, An Update On ‘Splice’ (Plus New Images!)

It’s been almost 16 months since we’ve heard anything new about the creepy sci-fi film Splice, but today we finally have something new for you. Some new images from the film have made their way online and we have a target release date for this Guillermo del Toro produced film.

We first brought this movie to your attention in November 2007 and it looked intriguing to say the least. Splice revolves around two geneticists (played by Adrien Brody and Sarah Polley) who decide to throw ethics out the window and experiment with splicing together the genes of a human with that of animals. They illegally create a hybrid and try to hide her from the world.

As you can no doubt guess, this probably doesn’t end well.

We posted the first images from Splice back then (warning, some of those contain nudity and are NSFW), and today we have a new batch of images from the film courtesy of Bloody Disgusting:

The film is directed by Vincenzo Natali, who’s other noteworthy accomplishment was the most excellent 1997 sci-fi horror film Cube, and of course I don’t need to fill you in on Guillermo del Toro’s background in creating films with fantastic and surreal creatures. This is one film that I’m looking forward to.

Right now Splice tentatively scheduled to open on September 18, 2009.

Splice: Finally, A Different Horror Movie On The Horizon?

With the prevalence of torture porn (no, I’m not afraid to use that term and yes, I think it’s accurate) movies like the Saw and Hostel films over the last couple of years, I’m more than ready for a new kind of horror movie experience and it looks like Splice might be just the thing the doctor ordered (pun intended as you will see shortly).

Splice is being produced by Guillermo del Toro and directed by Vincenzo Natali. You’ve probably heard of del Toro: His past films include Mimic, Blade II, Hellboy and the critically acclaimed horror/fairy tale for grownups Pan’s Labyrinth (which reminds me, I need to add that last one to my rental list). Who is Natali? His most famous movie as far as American audiences are concerned would be the most excellent sci-fi/horror film Cube.

Before I get to more about the movie, be aware that a couple of the images below probably fall under the category of “NSFW” or “Not Safe For Work” due to some female nudity. You should also be aware that they are quite creepy and you might even consider them a bit disturbing, so you’re been warned and click on them at your own risk.

The story revolves around a couple of geneticists (played by Adrien Brody and Sarah Polley) who decide to throw ethics out the window and experiment with splicing together the genes of a human with that of animals. They illegally create a hybrid (pictured below) and try to hide her from the world. As you can no doubt guess, they probably don’t succeed.

Director Vincenzo Natali says that the film is:

“…about finding humanity in the monster and… the monsters that lurk within humanity.”

The story and images give off a definite David Cronenberg vibe. Some of the most horrifying images are those of people who are disfigured in some way and it looks like this movie will tap into that primal aspect of our minds. Much like H.R. Giger’s work, sometimes the most effective use of this is to combine extreme beauty with some odd mutation… it pulls at both sides of the brain, both attracting a repelling us at the same time.

If the script is decent and this is done well, it could be a VERY effective sci-fi/horror movie.

There’s no solid release date for this yet, but they’re aiming for some time in 2009.
