Inception Leads 2011 Saturn Award Nominees

As we edge ever closer to the biggest movie award ceremony around, the Oscars, we have another set of nominations to mull over: The 37th Annual Saturn Awards.

While the Oscars, Golden Globes and the BAFTAs tend to recognize the more “serious” films (some would say in a way that is out of touch), award ceremonies like the Saturn Awards nominate films that average moviegoers would likely champion as their favorites of the year – not to mention the ceremony also recognizes the best TV shows and DVD release the year had to offer.

Toy Story 3, The King’s Speech & More Ineligible For WGA Screenplay Awards

When awards season rolls around every year there always seems to be a group of films that are tapped to pick up their share of the major awards. 2010 is no exception and this year the likes of Toy Story 3, Inception, The King’s Speech, The Social Network, Black Swan and The Fighter are among those which have won awards already and look likely to pick up some Oscars as well.

However, when it comes to the Screen Actors Guild (SAG), the Directors Guild of America (DGA) and the Writers Guild of America (WGA), there are rules which often prohibit certain awards favorites from winning in some of the big categories offered by awards ceremonies.

It is another huge week for home video. Almost a dozen DVD and Blu-ray releases are worth your attention, ranging from classic films to remakes of classic films.

It seems every genre is represented this week, from film Noir to grindhouse double features. There are kids kicking butt and kids turning their heads all the way around. Max is mad and beauty falls in love with a beast.

All puns aside, this week is one of the best in terms of sheer volume and should give you no reason to leave your collection alone. There is something for everybody.

2010 Scream Award Nominations

We’re now into awards season once more (time flies, doesn’t it?), with the Emmys having come and gone already. Now we have the annual 2010 Scream Awards which celebrates the more fan-friendly type of movies and TV shows that the Oscars and the Emmys might not honor. And the great thing is YOU get to vote for the winners!

Last year they honored such fan-favorites as Star Trek, Watchmen and Fringe with nominations, which I’m sure pleased many of you. Even if they still nominate some questionable movies, there’s no doubting that for the most part, the Scream Awards are a lot more in line with the majority of the movie going audience who pay to see movies purely to be entertained.

Splice made a good impression on many of the attendees at this year’s Sundance Film Festival – enough so that it was picked up by Warner Bros. for distribution in theaters this summer. Thanks to the folks over at Collider, we now have an even better look at the sci-fi morality tale-meets-horror monster flick than that offered by the recent international trailer.

Vincenzo Natali Wants To Make Alpha Flight Movie

As Screen Rant’s only Canadian writer I feel it is my duty, no, honor, to report on what could someday become the first movie about the Canadian X-Men. For comics fans out there, you know I’m talking about Alpha Flight.

For those unfamiliar with Alpha Flight, it’s one of the few Canadian superhero teams in existence. The characters were introduced in the Uncanny X-Men series back in 1979 as a team working for the fictional Department H of Canada’s Department of National Defence. They deal with people who have special abilities and conveniently, most of the Alpha Flight characters have over-the-top Canadian attributes.

There’s Sasquatch who’s… a sasquatch (Bigfoot for the American readers) and a little dude named Puck (hockey reference) along with some characters with Inuit or First Nations heritage.

The wait is nearly over for Vincenzo Natali’s sci-fi horror film Splice – about two scientists who create a new being by mixing together genetic material from humans, kangaroos, birds, and other living organisms.

As we’ve seen from the previous trailers, the result is not pretty.

Optimum Releasing, the international distributor for Splice, has supplied us with another glimpse at the highly-anticipated film. The trailer contains mild spoilers – featuring Dren, the Splice creation, in her later stages of development.

‘Swamp Thing’ Movie On Hold?

MTV caught up with director Vincenzo Natali this week – as he’s currently promoting his new sci-fi/horror flick Splice - and was informed that unfortunately an adaptation of the comic book Swamp Thing is no longer in the works.

Last month, Natali expressed interest in directing a film version of Swamp Thing based off writer Alan Moore’s critically-revered run of the character in the 1980s. Due to certain legal matters, it looks as though that will not be happening in the near future.

According to Natali:

“[Producer] Joel Silver actually had a couple of [Swamp Thing] scripts in, only to discover later on that the film rights were held by another company. And it’s even more complicated than that, I’m told.”

New ‘Splice’ Trailer Unleashed

The upcoming sci-fi horror film, Splice, has a new trailer and it reveals much more of the film than the original teaser.

While we’ve already had a few good looks at the splice monster, the second trailer gives a more detailed glimpse into the summer movie that is getting loads of buzz in the film community.

Interestingly, the emphasis of this second trailer is on the impact of genetic interference by science. One line specifically stands out as a hint as to the structure of Splice: “Human cloning is illegal. This won’t be human.” The moment instantly felt like Frankenstein meets Adam and Even in The Garden of Eden. It seems clear once the Splice scientists make the decision to try their scientific research on human DNA, everything goes wrong.

‘Splice’ Director Taking On Swamp Thing?

A lot of people probably aren’t familiar with the name Vincenzo Natali (Cube), but he’s the writer/director behind this summer’s “science gone wrong” horror film Splice, which stars Adrien Brody (Predators) and Sarah Polley (Dawn of the Dead remake) and is being produced by Guillermo del Toro (The Hobbit).

If you caught the Splice trailer, then you’re probably already intrigued by what looks like Species for a new generation of sci-fi lovers. The trailer has its share of hokey “what have we done?” moments and cliché flash cuts of the film’s hyrbid monster attacking people, but the cinematography looks appropriately chilly and there’s a definite Alien-like atmosphere to the whole thing. So, fingers crossed, we have a winner on our hands.

Awesome ‘Splice’ Trailer Is Finally Here

We’ve been waiting around for a Splice trailer since word first popped about the sci-fi horror movie. The film has been a long time coming, but it’s almost here. While we can’t vouch for this being the official trailer, it sure is cool. And something tells me if you liked Species you’re going to love this.

The trailer itself is a fantastic blend of well-paced suspense and an action-packed montage ending. Starring Adrien Brody (Predators) and Sarah Polley (Dawn of the Dead), the film is produced by Guillermo Del Toro (The Hobbit) and directed by Vincenzo Natali (Paris, je’ taime).

The thing about film festivals is that they’re primarily attended by those who are film buffs in the truest sense; what goes over well at those festivals isn’t necessarily representative of the general movie going public.

Splice, the new film by Vincenzo Natali (Cube) has been the subject of a lot of talk for a long time, especially since it’s been tagged with the header “Guillermo del Toro Presents” – big endorsement for a sci-fi/horror film.

In our last update, we let you know that Warner Bros. and super-producer Joel “The Matrix” Silver were looking to distribute Splice and now we know when the movie will be officially hitting theaters.

Who would’ve guessed that Splice would be entering the blockbuster arena of the Summer 2010 lineup?

Splice Cuts a Distribution Deal

Splice, Vincenzo Natali’s take on the perils of Frankenstein-like genetic experimentation, could be the next Paranormal Activity – at least that’s what Joel Silver is banking on.

Dark Castle Entertainment is reportedly in the final stages of signing a distribution deal for the sci-fi thriller, which stars Adrian Brody and Sarah Polley as genetic scientists who create life by patching together the DNA from several species – humans included. The deal would put the film on 3,000 screens as well as commit $25-40 million for promotion and advertising.

With the success of both District 9 and Paranormal Activity, Studios have been scrambling to unearth the next low-budget, independent thrill-fest. New Clip and Hi-Res Image from ‘Splice’

We’ve got a new clip, a new hi-res image and some additional (read: old) images from Splice, the upcoming sci-fi/horror from director Vincenzo Natali (Cube). The film stars Adrien Brody and Sarah Polley (Dawn of the Dead) as two scientists who start playing with DNA splicing and have it all turn out well…or not.

The film has been making the festival rounds but still no word on when it might get a U.S. release. Hopefully the clip and these images provided by Bloody-Disgusting will help pique YOUR interests so that we can get a proper look at this film over here in the states.

It’s been almost 16 months since we’ve heard anything new about the creepy sci-fi film Splice, but today we finally have something new for you. Some new images from the film have made their way online and we have a target release date for this Guillermo del Toro produced film.

We first brought this movie to your attention in November 2007 and it looked intriguing to say the least. Splice revolves around two geneticists (played by Adrien Brody and Sarah Polley) who decide to throw ethics out the window and experiment with splicing together the genes of a human with that of animals. They illegally create a hybrid and try to hide her from the world.

As you can no doubt guess, this probably doesn’t end well.

Splice: Finally, A Different Horror Movie On The Horizon?

With the prevalence of torture porn (no, I’m not afraid to use that term and yes, I think it’s accurate) movies like the Saw and Hostel films over the last couple of years, I’m more than ready for a new kind of horror movie experience and it looks like Splice might be just the thing the doctor ordered (pun intended as you will see shortly).

Splice is being produced by Guillermo del Toro and directed by Vincenzo Natali.
