The nominations are out for the 37th Annual Saturn Awards and they include such favorites as 'Inception,' 'Harry Potter,' 'True Grit' and 'Shutter Island.' Read the full list of nominees here.

As we edge ever closer to the biggest movie award ceremony around, the Oscars, we have another set of nominations to mull over: The 37th Annual Saturn Awards.

While the Oscars, Golden Globes and the BAFTAs tend to recognize the more “serious” films (some would say in a way that is out of touch), award ceremonies like the Saturn Awards nominate films that average moviegoers would likely champion as their favorites of the year – not to mention the ceremony also recognizes the best TV shows and DVD release the year had to offer.

Last year the Saturn Awards were dominated by a little film called Avatar (you may have heard of it), but as you’ll see below fan favorite Inception dominates things this year with a whopping nine nominations, while other popular films like ...

Click to continue reading Inception Leads 2011 Saturn Award Nominees

Top movie awards contenders like 'Toy Story 3' and 'The King's Speech' have been deemed ineligible for the Best Screenplay categories at The Writers Guild of America awards.

When awards season rolls around every year there always seems to be a group of films that are tapped to pick up their share of the major awards. 2010 is no exception and this year the likes of Toy Story 3, Inception, The King’s Speech, The Social Network, Black Swan and The Fighter are among those which have won awards already and look likely to pick up some Oscars as well.

However, when it comes to the Screen Actors Guild (SAG), the Directors Guild of America (DGA) and the Writers Guild of America (WGA), there are rules which often prohibit certain awards favorites from winning in some of the big categories offered by awards ceremonies.

Following the Oscars deeming the scores for Black Swan, True Grit and The Fighter ineligible for ...

Click to continue reading Toy Story 3, The King’s Speech & More Ineligible For WGA Screenplay Awards

The nominations have been announced for the 2010 Scream Awards which celebrates the more fan-friendly type of movies and TV shows than the Oscars and the Emmys.

We’re now into awards season once more (time flies, doesn’t it?), with the Emmys having come and gone already. Now we have the annual 2010 Scream Awards which celebrates the more fan-friendly type of movies and TV shows that the Oscars and the Emmys might not honor. And the great thing is YOU get to vote for the winners!

Last year they honored such fan-favorites as Star Trek, Watchmen and Fringe with nominations, which I’m sure pleased many of you. Even if they still nominate some questionable movies, there’s no doubting that for the most part, the Scream Awards are a lot more in line with the majority of the movie going audience who pay to see movies purely to be entertained.

Even if the Scream Awards tend to honor the “right” movies however, this year’s ...

Click to continue reading 2010 Scream Award Nominations

While it's certainly not for everyone, 'Splice' is the creepiest movie to come out so far this year - and one of the better ones as well.

Screen Rant‘s Vic Holtreman reviews Splice

We first mentioned Splice way back in November 2007. Guillermo del Toro (Blade 2, Hellboy, Pan’s Labyrinth) was producing and Vincenzo Natali (director and co-writer of the cult classic Cube) was set to direct. It took a while to make it to the screen, premiered in Spain last November and had its real debut at Sundance this year. And now U.S. theater goers finally have their chance to get totally creeped out by it.

Right from the start, you’ll be wondering what you’re in for with some of the creepiest opening credits I’ve seen in a film. Splice stars Adrien Brody and Sarah Polley as Clive Nikolai and Elsa Cast, a scientist couple who are at the forefront of genetic engineering. Their latest creations are “Fred and ...

Click to continue reading ‘Splice’ Review

We have a new poster, clips, and image gallery for the sci-fi/horror flick Splice, the latest film from director Vincenzo Natali (Cube).

Splice made a good impression on many of the attendees at this year’s Sundance Film Festival – enough so that it was picked up by Warner Bros. for distribution in theaters this summer. Thanks to the folks over at Collider, we now have an even better look at the sci-fi morality tale-meets-horror monster flick than that offered by the recent international trailer.

Those unfamiliar with the plot of Splice should have a read through the film’s official synopsis:

Superstar genetic engineers Clive (Adrien Brody) and Elsa (Sarah Polley) specialize in splicing DNA from different animals to create incredible hybrids. Now they want to use human DNA in a hybrid that could revolutionize science and medicine. But when the pharmaceutical company that funds their research forbids it, Clive and Elsa secretly take their ...

Click to continue reading New ‘Splice’ Poster, Clips & Image Gallery

As Screen Rant’s only Canadian writer I feel it is my duty, no, honor, to report on what could someday become the first movie about the Canadian X-Men. For comics fans out there, you know I’m talking about Alpha Flight.

For those unfamiliar with Alpha Flight, it’s one of the few Canadian superhero teams in existence. The characters were introduced in the Uncanny X-Men series back in 1979 as a team working for the fictional Department H of Canada’s Department of National Defence. They deal with people who have special abilities and conveniently, most of the Alpha Flight characters have over-the-top Canadian attributes.

There’s Sasquatch who’s… a sasquatch (Bigfoot for the American readers) and a little dude named Puck (hockey reference) along with some characters with Inuit or First Nations heritage.

Their most notable character – ...

Click to continue reading Vincenzo Natali Wants To Make Alpha Flight Movie

The international Splice trailer focuses on the horror side of Vincenzo Natali's upcoming film about geneticists who create a dangerous hybrid creature.

The wait is nearly over for Vincenzo Natali’s sci-fi horror film Splice – about two scientists who create a new being by mixing together genetic material from humans, kangaroos, birds, and other living organisms.

As we’ve seen from the previous trailers, the result is not pretty.

Optimum Releasing, the international distributor for Splice, has supplied us with another glimpse at the highly-anticipated film. The trailer contains mild spoilers – featuring Dren, the Splice creation, in her later stages of development.

Check out the trailer after the jump – but don’t say we didn’t warn you:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=foF3r-UKfCQ

The new trailer definitely focuses a bit more on the horror aspect of the sci-fi horror hybrid – though, I’m personally hoping the film keeps a healthy balance between the two. The earlier trailers were both disturbing and ...

Click to continue reading Splice International Trailer

MTV caught up with director Vincenzo Natali this week – as he’s currently promoting his new sci-fi/horror flick Splice - and was informed that unfortunately an adaptation of the comic book Swamp Thing is no longer in the works.

Last month, Natali expressed interest in directing a film version of Swamp Thing based off writer Alan Moore’s critically-revered run of the character in the 1980s. Due to certain legal matters, it looks as though that will not be happening in the near future.

According to Natali:

“[Producer] Joel Silver actually had a couple of [Swamp Thing] scripts in, only to discover later on that the film rights were held by another company. And it’s even more complicated than that, I’m told.”

The upcoming sci-fi horror film, Splice, has a new trailer and it reveals much more of the film than the original teaser.

While we’ve already had a few good looks at the splice monster, the second trailer gives a more detailed glimpse into the summer movie that is getting loads of buzz in the film community.

Interestingly, the emphasis of this second trailer is on the impact of genetic interference by science. One line specifically stands out as a hint as to the structure of Splice: “Human cloning is illegal. This won’t be human.” The moment instantly felt like Frankenstein meets Adam and Even in The Garden of Eden. It seems clear once the Splice scientists make the decision to try their scientific research on human DNA, everything goes wrong.

A lot of people probably aren’t familiar with the name Vincenzo Natali (Cube), but he’s the writer/director behind this summer’s “science gone wrong” horror film Splice, which stars Adrien Brody (Predators) and Sarah Polley (Dawn of the Dead remake) and is being produced by Guillermo del Toro (The Hobbit).

If you caught the Splice trailer, then you’re probably already intrigued by what looks like Species for a new generation of sci-fi lovers. The trailer has its share of hokey “what have we done?” moments and cliché flash cuts of the film’s hyrbid monster attacking people, but the cinematography looks appropriately chilly and there’s a definite Alien-like atmosphere to the whole thing. So, fingers crossed, we have a winner on our hands.

I mention all this as backdrop for the news that Vincenzo Natali spoke to <a ...

Click to continue reading ‘Splice’ Director Taking On Swamp Thing?

We’ve been waiting around for a Splice trailer since word first popped about the sci-fi horror movie. The film has been a long time coming, but it’s almost here. While we can’t vouch for this being the official trailer, it sure is cool. And something tells me if you liked Species you’re going to love this.

The trailer itself is a fantastic blend of well-paced suspense and an action-packed montage ending. Starring Adrien Brody (Predators) and Sarah Polley (Dawn of the Dead), the film is produced by Guillermo Del Toro (The Hobbit) and directed by Vincenzo Natali (Paris, je’ taime).

The sci-fi/horror film 'Splice' will be in theaters this summer - although not with the ending originally screened at Sundance. Find out what's being changed and why

[Update: New details on exactly what's being changed in the film]

Splice, the new film about genetic splicing gone wrong by Vincenzo Natali (Cube) is something sci-fi/horror fans have been looking forward to for sometime. The film’s reception at Sundance was a bit mixed – although, those that dug it really dug it.

The thing about film festivals is that they’re primarily attended by those who are film buffs in the truest sense; what goes over well at those festivals isn’t necessarily representative of the general movie going public.

Case in point: Splice. The film was picked up by Warner Bros. - a move spearheaded by producer Joel “The Matrix” Silver – and was recently given a prime summer release date. However, in order for the movie to play better (according to Silver and WB’s standards) Splice is going ...

Click to continue reading ‘Splice’ Getting Alternate Ending [Updated]

Splice, the new film by Vincenzo Natali (Cube) has been the subject of a lot of talk for a long time, especially since it’s been tagged with the header “Guillermo del Toro Presents” – big endorsement for a sci-fi/horror film.

In our last update, we let you know that Warner Bros. and super-producer Joel “The Matrix” Silver were looking to distribute Splice and now we know when the movie will be officially hitting theaters.

Who would’ve guessed that Splice would be entering the blockbuster arena of the Summer 2010 lineup?

That’s right, Splice has been given a June 4th release date by WB, placing it alongside the Ashton Kutcher/Katherine Heigl action-rom-com Killers and the pet-friendly kids film, Marmaduke. Against that sort of competition, I’d say that Splice is being released at exactly the right time for a strong box office ...

Click to continue reading ‘Splice’ Snags a Summer Release Date

Splice, Vincenzo Natali’s take on the perils of Frankenstein-like genetic experimentation, could be the next Paranormal Activity – at least that’s what Joel Silver is banking on.

Dark Castle Entertainment is reportedly in the final stages of signing a distribution deal for the sci-fi thriller, which stars Adrian Brody and Sarah Polley as genetic scientists who create life by patching together the DNA from several species – humans included. The deal would put the film on 3,000 screens as well as commit $25-40 million for promotion and advertising.

With the success of both District 9 and Paranormal Activity, Studios have been scrambling to unearth the next low-budget, independent thrill-fest. Who can blame them, with the astronomical amounts of money it takes to make movies these days? Seeking out a greater number of less costly opportunities, with potentially large pay-offs, is definitely a ...

Click to continue reading Splice Cuts a Distribution Deal

We’ve got a new clip, a new hi-res image and some additional (read: old) images from Splice, the upcoming sci-fi/horror from director Vincenzo Natali (Cube). The film stars Adrien Brody and Sarah Polley (Dawn of the Dead) as two scientists who start playing with DNA splicing and have it all turn out well…or not.

The film has been making the festival rounds but still no word on when it might get a U.S. release. Hopefully the clip and these images provided by Bloody-Disgusting will help pique YOUR interests so that we can get a proper look at this film over here in the states.

It’s been almost 16 months since we’ve heard anything new about the creepy sci-fi film Splice, but today we finally have something new for you. Some new images from the film have made their way online and we have a target release date for this Guillermo del Toro produced film.

We first brought this movie to your attention in November 2007 and it looked intriguing to say the least. Splice revolves around two geneticists (played by Adrien Brody and Sarah Polley) who decide to throw ethics out the window and experiment with splicing together the genes of a human with that of animals. They illegally create a hybrid and try to hide her from the world.

As you can no doubt guess, this probably doesn’t end well.

We posted the first images from Splice back then (warning, some ...

Click to continue reading Finally, An Update On ‘Splice’ (Plus New Images!)

With the prevalence of torture porn (no, I’m not afraid to use that term and yes, I think it’s accurate) movies like the Saw and Hostel films over the last couple of years, I’m more than ready for a new kind of horror movie experience and it looks like Splice might be just the thing the doctor ordered (pun intended as you will see shortly).

Splice is being produced by Guillermo del Toro and directed by Vincenzo Natali. You’ve probably heard of del Toro: His past films include Mimic, Blade II, Hellboy and the critically acclaimed horror/fairy tale for grownups Pan’s Labyrinth (which reminds me, I need to add that last one to my rental list). Who is Natali? His most famous movie as far as American audiences are concerned would be the most excellent ...

Click to continue reading Splice: Finally, A Different Horror Movie On The Horizon?
