‘Avengers’ vs. ‘Amazing Spider-Man’: Marvel Movie Trailer Showdown

This week has brought us two big superhero movie trailers, with The Avengers Super Bowl trailer sending fans into frenzy, followed by the new Amazing Spider-Man trailer - which has come out of the gate (literally) swinging, and managed to overcome some of the negative opinion that the reboot was initially facing.

In fact, The Amazing Spider-Man has impressed so much that we’ve begun to hear whispers here and there that the Spider-Man trailer did a better job than The Avengers Super Bowl trailer, and ultimately made the Spider-Man reboot look like the better movie.

‘Amazing Spider-Man’ 3D Trailer & Preview Footage Discussion

The Amazing Spider-Man trailer is out, and fans are definitely talking. Before the new trailer dropped, it’s fair to say that popular opinion on the film was mixed at best, brutally critical at worst; now, the tide is suddenly starting to shift.

We had the opportunity to attend a live event where a 3D version of the new Amazing Spider-Man trailer was previewed for crowds gathered in cities like NYC, London, Rio de Janeiro and LA, with surprise appearances in those respective cities by ASM stars Andrew Garfield, Rhys Ifans, Emma Stone and director Marc Webb. If a 3D trailer and cast appearances weren’t enough, we also got a look at a longer reel of footage that was first screened at this summer’s Spider-Man Comic-Con panel.

‘Amazing Spider-Man’ Trailer: An Epic Untold Story

Of all the upcoming reboots and remakes on the slate for 2012, The Amazing Spider-Man is probably one of the most debated.

The film is a complete re-imagining of the Spider-Man film universe – one that carries heavy traces of the more modern Spider-Man mythos (as featured in Marvel’s Ultimate Spider-Man comic books), rather than the classic Spider-Man comics that were the basis of Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man movie trilogy early in the new millennium.

The first Amazing Spider-Man trailer left the fanbase severely divided. Some were intrigued by the seemingly darker and more modern take on NYC teenager Peter Parker’s transformation into an arachnid-powered superhero; others thought that star Andrew Garfield was offering a more “Emo” take on Peter P., and that the differences in tone, costume, and the details of Spider-Man’s origin story ...

‘Amazing Spider-Man’: New Character Pics, Wallpapers, & Marc Webb Interview

Special advanced screenings of footage from The Amazing Spider-Man will be held in select big cities around the globe tomorrow (from writing this), as Sony initiates the second wind of marketing for its 3D rebooting of the iconic arachnid-powered superhero movie series. A full-length trailer for the film is expected to make its way online shortly thereafter, possibly even that same day.

Today (via the official Amazing Spider-Man website) we have a pair of new character profiles and two wallpaper versions of previous-unveiled images featuring a partially-costumed Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield) and Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone) in high-school mode – along with excerpts from an interview with director Marc Webb, talking about the film’s darker plot elements, humor, and Garfield’s interpretation of the eponymous character.

‘Amazing Spider-Man’: International Poster & Andrew Garfield Interview

A full-length trailer for director Marc Webb’s retooling of the Spider-Man live-action film franchise (titled The Amazing Spider-Man) is slated to be unveiled within a month (from the time of writing this). In order to help keep the flick on moviegoers’ radar – and not be overshadowed by this summer’s two comic book movie titans, ie. The Avengers and The Dark Knight Rises – Sony has been steadily releasing new images and chunks of information concerning the film’s plot and characters.

New ‘Amazing Spider-Man’ Plot Synopsis Hints At ‘Untold Story’

Ever since Sony released the official Amazing Spider-Man teaser poster, the film’s promotional campaign has become increasingly centered around the idea that there is some pivotal “untold” aspect of young Peter Parker’s coming-of-age story – which was ignored in previous live-action Spidey flicks, but will be explored in director Marc Webb’s reboot of the webslinger franchise.

A previously-released plot synopsis indicates that the “untold story” in question involves Pete’s attempts to discover just why his biological parents vanished, so many years before. Amazing Spider-Man producer Avi Arad confirmed as much during a recent press tour, while also teasing the connection between Richard Parker (Campbell Scott) and the film’s central antagonist, The Lizard, a.k.a. Dr. Curt Connors (Rhys Ifans).

Between unofficial (but seemingly legitimate) conceptual artwork and a Pez dispenser representation, fans have been able to extrapolate what at least one stage of Dr. Curt Connors’ (Rhys Ifans) Lizard mutation looks like in the upcoming The Amazing Spider-Man – without having seen an actual image of the character, that is.

‘Amazing Spider-Man’ Pics: Gwen Stacy, Peter Parker, & Webshooters

Sony has held off on unveiling a second trailer for The Amazing Spider-Man just yet – perhaps, in part to avoid it being overshadowed by the recent onslaught of headline-grabbing theatrical promos unveiled for other tentpole pics due out in 2012 (see: The Dark Knight Rises, Prometheus, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, etc.).

The studio has nonetheless been keeping director Marc Webb’s Spidey franchise reboot on the public’s radar for the past month, via the release of posters and the launching of the official Amazing Spider-Man website. Now, we have even more hi-res images from the flick to share with you.

‘Amazing Spider-Man’: Official Synopsis, Character Bios, & New Images

There is a silent (marketing) war ongoing right now between two of the big comic book flicks due to hit theaters in July of 2012: Warner Bros.’ The Dark Knight Rises and Sony’s The Amazing Spider-Man.

While we’ve been bombarded by promotional material for director Christopher Nolan’s final Batman movie, director Marc Webb’s web-slinger reboot has also been making headlines – thanks to some shiny international banners and a cleverly-designed poster that teases the idea that Webb’s take on Spider-Man is going to be substantially different than director Sam Raimi’s.

Sony has stepped up its game to land Amazing Spider-Man extra attention by activating the film’s official site; among the goodies included therein are several promotional images, new still frames, character descriptions, and a brief plot synopsis that offers more insight concerning “the untold story” of Peter Parker that is explored in Webb’s Spidey movie.

‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ International Banners Are Bright & Flashy

Warner Bros. has been hogging the spotlight of late (at least, when it concerns upcoming comic book movies) with its promotional campaign for The Dark Knight Rises. Meanwhile, Columbia Pictures has quietly gotten a steady buzz going for The Amazing Spider-Man, thanks to the release of a stylish teaser poster and some (unconfirmed) Lizard artwork that reveal the new Spidey flick’s change in style and new antagonistic character.

A full-length Amazing Spider-Man theatrical trailer is expected to arrive in the near future, but for the time being, a trio of new international banners have been released in anticipation of director Marc Webb’s Spider-Man franchise reboot.

Just about every Spidey fan out there now knows about the strange outfit Rhys Ifans wore on-set to portray The Lizard in The Amazing Spider-Man, along with the actor’s thoughts about the antagonistic character and even what Dr. Curt Connor’s monstrous form in the comic book movie franchise reboot looks like… in Pez dispenser form.

In other words: outside of those who managed to attend the film’s 2011 Comic-Con panel, Spidey fans know just about everything there is to know about Amazing Spider-Man‘s version of The Lizard – other than what he actually looks like.

‘Amazing Spider-Man’ NY Set Pics: Early Spidey Costume & Human Lizard [Updated]

2011 has been a landmark year, when it comes to the release of set pictures and videos from in-production films. The shooting process for projects ranging from tentpole comic book movies (The Avengers, The Dark Knight Rises) to popcorn franchise installments (Resident Evil: Retribution) and even higher-predigree dramas (Gangster Squad and Cloud Atlas) has been partially chronicled, via amateur images and clips.

That’s also been the case for Sony’s The Amazing Spider-Man, which recently underwent reshoots on location in the streets of New York – and, sure enough, we have the images to prove it.

We already covered the DC Animated panel at NYCC ’11 – which featured DC Universe animated features coming to DVD/Blu-ray – and yesterday, we covered the Marvel Television panel hosted by Vice President of Marvel Television, Jeph Loeb.

Rhys Ifans Discusses His Lizard Costume For ‘Amazing Spider-Man’

Those who attended the 2011 Comic-Con Sony Pictures Panel were able to get an early glimpse of The Lizard in director Marc Webb’s franchise reboot, The Amazing Spider-Man. By virtually all accounts, the CGI villain is pretty massive and does not bear a strong physical resemblance to his comic book incarnation – given his flatter facial structure and lack of any clothing (even a tattered laboratory coat).

Everyone who didn’t make it to Comic-Con is hoping to get a glimpse of the reptilian monster in the next Amazing Spider-Man trailer, whenever it arrives. Cliff Robertson Passes Away at Age 88

The late Cliff Robertson – who passed away yesterday, just a day after his 88th birthday – gained a whole new generation of fans over the last decade of his life, following his portrayal of Peter Parker’s kindly Uncle Ben in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man movie trilogy. He personally and professionally embraced Ben’s famous creed (“With great power comes great responsibility”) for the duration of his film acting career, which spanned nearly six decades.

Robertson was born in Los Angeles, California, on September 9th, 1923. He began his television acting career at age 20, eventually landing recurring parts on shows like Hallmark Hall of Fame and Robert Montgomery Presents – along with a starring role on Rod Brown of the Rocket Rangers – during the early 1950s.

Andrew Garfield Talks About His ‘Spider-Sense’ and Fear of Fame

When The Amazing Spider-Man was first announced, there were plenty of people who were suspicious of a new Spider-Man reboot so soon after Sam Raimi’s trilogy (including yours truly). Slowly but surely, however, it seems like the tide has turned in favor of the film.

In part, the change in opinion comes from the film’s impressive cast and its enjoyable first trailer. However, arguably the biggest reason people are getting behind The Amazing Spider-Man is the web-slinger himself, Andrew Garfield.

Beginning with his moving speech at Comic-Con, Garfield has been winning fans over with his sincere love and appreciation for the character of Spider-Man. The rising young star continues to impress in an interview today with the Los Angeles Times Hero Complex blog.
