Marc Webb Consults James Cameron about Spider-Man 3D

A few weeks ago, when Sony made the announcement that they were parting ways with all the people involved with the highly successful Spider-Man movie franchise, the entire movie news world let out a collective “UGH!” In one major sweep, Sony let go of the Sam Raimi, Steve Ditko, Tobey Maguire, Willem Dafoe, Kirsten Dunst (not a huge loss IMO), James Franco and others that made old Web-Head movies what they were.

Sony decided to take Peter Parker back to high school, using James Vanderbilt’s script, which indicates another origin story; and although no official announcement has been made, I’m guessing the main villain will be a brooding teenage Morbius (if Twilight mania is any indication). Joseph Gordon-Levitt Talks Spider-Man Reboot

With (500) Days of Summer director Marc Webb being selected as the man in charge of helming the Spider-Man reboot, one of the first and more obvious rumors of who may play Peter Parker was the talented rising star Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who worked with Webb on the aforementioned critically acclaimed rom-com.

Along with rumors of Jim Sturgess and Taylor Lautner, I think Joseph Gordon-Levitt isn’t right for the role of Peter Parker. He’s incredibly talented and he did a fantastic job working with Webb before, but he’s too old for the role in my opinion with the direction they’re going in.

Spider-Man Reboot Budget & Origins

Yesterday the rumors that director Marc Webb would helm the Spider-Man reboot came true via an official press release from Sony Pictures. With that out of the way, rumors can shift back on to who will play Peter Parker and what the film will be about.

A concern from the press release yesterday for many of us was a segment where Amy Pascal, co-chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment, hinted at a re-hashing of Spider-Man’s origins. In describing Marc Webb’s choice and the setting of Peter Parker being back in high school, she says the reasoning behind this decision was that “so the audience could experience his sense of discovery.”

Confirmed: Marc Webb is Directing Spider-Man Reboot

Despite mixed feelings towards the rushed reboot of Sony’s Spider-Man franchise, it is happening. Spider-Man 4 was canned and a reboot is on its way, set to release only one year off the mark for their planned release of the next installment. It will be based on a story that was already being worked on while Sam Raimi and co. were still on board.

What we knew about the reboot involved a younger Peter Parker back in high school and we heard rumors that Marc Webb was the leading contender for the directing gig. Now it has been confirmed and the (500) Days of Summer director will be bringing Peter Parker back to school as he’s now officially charged with helming the reboot.

Now that Spider-Man 4 has come to an end and the rumors have finally seized for that franchise… oh wait, they’re rebooting the rumor mill too. Well, at least now that Tobey Maguire is done with Sony Pictures’ franchise so he won’t be bothered with rumors about who the villain will be and whether or not it will be delayed. Also wrong; He’s swirling in rumors for the lead role as Bilbo Baggins in The Hobbit (again).

With Iron Man 2 kicking off this summer, Thor officially in full production and Captain America secretly in the workings behind the scenes for a summer start, it’s too bad Sony Pictures’ Spider-Man franchise couldn’t get anything going to have their next film out by next summer.

Spider-Man Reboot: The Votes Are In

The delays and rumors surrounding the production of the next Spider-Man and the disagreements between director Sam Raimi and Sony Pictures led to Spider-Man 4 being officially cancelled last week. While many said this couldn’t be the case, it was, and on the same day it was canned, Sony officially announced the reboot which is tentatively scheduled for a 2012 summer release.

Needless to say, the internet community was abuzz over this news and while many were happy to see Spider-Man getting a fresh start, many were upset that a reboot was being forced so soon, especially considering that the Spider-Man live-action origins are only a few years old and still fresh in the minds of fans and moviegoers.

Marc Webb To Direct Spider-Man Reboot? [Updated]

For months leading up to what became the death of Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 4, the project filled the media with rumors and speculation. Now, with Sony Pictures planning an overly fast reboot of the franchise for 2012 release as of two days ago, we’re already hearing of rumors and speculation for the next take on Peter Parker’s adventures in high school (again).

According to Mike Fleming who recently joined Deadline Hollywood, Sony Pictures already has a short wishlist of directors they’re interesting in hiring to restart the franchise with what likely will be a new trilogy of Spider-Man movies. According to their insiders, names such as James Cameron, David Fincher, and Wes Anderson are all included. Story For Spider-Man Reboot Already Exists

The major news item yesterday was the shocking but not-too-surprising report and confirmation that Spider-Man 4 was cancelled. No Sam Raimi, no Tobey Maguire, no Kirsten Dunst, it’s done with. Sony is going the path of the speed reboot and starting from scratch with Peter Parker in high school and you can read the official press release in our update on the cancellation.

One of the problems for Sony Pictures all along was having to wait so long between installments. For obvious reasons, Spider-Man is their prized money-making franchise and they don’t want delays between paychecks. With that in mind, the studio had a sort of contingency plan in place if this were to happen anyways and the story for the next Spider-Man is already there.

Spider-Man 4 Cancelled! [Updated]

Breaking News: Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire are out of Spider-Man 4! Sony moving forward with Franchise reboot.

Well, I kind of saw this coming. Spider-Man 4 with its issues over villains, Sony vs. Raimi disputes and delays is now confirmed dead.

Many of our readers agreed with what I said in our last post on the confirmed delay of Spider-Man 4 in that perhaps Raimi and Sony should simply part ways and they can take the franchise in another direction or start from scratch.

Now it is confirmed from Nikki Finke and Mike Fleming at Deadline Hollywood that the cast and director have pulled out entirely and Sony will instead go the route of the reboot with Jamie Vanderbilt’s script.

My Spidey sense is telling me there’s a chance we won’t be getting a quality film in Spider-Man 4. How can we after what we saw from Spider-Man 3 which was plagued with too many characters, sub-par writing and apparent studio interference which forced a major character into a movie where he didn’t belong, right?

Well, things were looking good for the fourth installment however, where director Sam Raimi would again helm, promising that this time he would be in “full control” of the movie unlike last time around. When he said that, he should have clarified that he wouldn’t actually have much control at all… because he doesn’t.

Spider-Man 4 To Feature A Certain Red-Haired Baby…

I bet your Spidey sense is tingling from that headline and your first thought may be that Mary Jane and Peter Parker spawn a love-child in Sam Raimi’s fourth installment of the Spider-Man franchise.

If you’re wondering what I’m talking about, SpoilerTV put up the casting call info for “toddler boy,” a two year old red-haired baby that will be a part of Spider-Man 4. Uh oh.

While that might be the case (I doubt it though), it is possible, as some fans have speculated, that the child is Cletus Kasady, who many will know as the popular villain Carnage. Whether this is being introduced for us to be used as plot thread in the interconnected Spider-Man 5 & 6 or it’s a look into Peter Parker’s future, or Mary Jane ...

Will Sam Raimi Direct Spider-Man 5 & 6?

It’s been a big week for Sony’s Columbia Pictures and fans of the Spider-Man franchise. A mere week ago we found that the studio has selected Gary Ross to direct and rewrite the upcoming Venom solo film. Ross has a long history with the studio and actor Tobey Maguire and he’s currently involved with the script of Spider-Man 4. While we later heard that Venom might be far off with Ross also being tipped to helm the Spielberg-less Matt Helm remake, there’s no slowing the Spidey franchise one way or another.

On the Peter Parker side of things, Raimi revealed a few days back that they’re planning for an early March start of production for Spider-Man 4 to meet their summer kick-off release date in 2011. That’s not all however, as more recently we reported ...

Venom Updates: How Will It Tie Into Spider-Man Franchise?

SCI FI Wire had an exclusive interview with Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, the writers behind next month’s Zombieland flick (which looks great!) and they spoke about that other big project they’ve been working on: the script for the Venom solo film.

The last we heard on the Venom project from the writers was from back in April when they couldn’t comment on whether or not this incarnation of Venom would be the same as/related to the wasted version we saw in the highly disappointing Spider-Man 3.

In the interview, Reese and Wernick take questions on the status of the project and when the film could be in production.

So, What’s the latest on their scripts?

“We’ve written two drafts of Venom, and the studio has it, and they’re pushing forward in whatever ways they push forward,”

Writer Hired For Spider-Man 5 & 6

According to Variety, James Vanderbilt has been picked up by Sony Pictures Entertainment to pen the scripts to another two Spider-Man films.

What’s interesting about this is that Vanderbilt had initially written the first script for Spider-Man 4, a script that director Sam Raimi wasn’t fully in support of. Raimi brought in other writers to do several re-writes but executives at Columbia Pictures and Marvel Studios actually liked Vanderbilt’s ideas.

That’s a tad worrisome seeing how Raimi was involved with the mess that was Spider-Man 3 and Marvel Studios has been dead-on with their first two films; Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk.

A big issue here is that there’s no confirmation on whether or not any of the key players will return for another two installments. Raimi was doubtful of doing a fourth but he eventually came back ...
