Final ‘Amazing Spider-Man’ Posters Embrace a Darker Tone

A few weeks from now a Marvel film (The Avengers) will kick off the summer movie blockbuster season, to be followed up a few weeks later by another Marvel flick in Sony and Columbia Pictures’ reboot of The Amazing Spider-Man. It’s only been five years since Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy came to end and before DC Entertainment makes amends for last year’s Green Lantern with this year’s The Dark Knight Rises, we have Marc Webb’s 3D Spidey reboot with star Andrew Garfield as the new face of the franchise.

Over the weekend we saw the film’s Japanese trailer, and there’s been no shortage of set photos and images of Garfield as Peter Parker and in costume as the titular hero or of Rhys Ifans’ as Dr. Curt Connors/The Lizard. Adding to the media, today we have a pair of new posters for The Amazing Spider-Man.

Could Villain in Spider-Man Reboot Be The Lizard?

After breaking the rumor earlier in the week that Jamie Bell could be playing Peter Parker in Sony’s 3D reboot of Spider-Man, Bleeding Cool is now also reporting that the feature villain for the franchise restart could be The Lizard.

As Spider-Man fans know very well, The Lizard was widely speculated to be a secondary villain for Spider-Man 4 after the character of Dr. Curt Connors had been setup in the previous installments. It was the logical next step and was further rumored as a possible plot line when Dylan Baker, the actor who played the minor role of Dr. Curt Connors in Spider-Man 1 & 2 was confirmed to have joined the cast of Spider-Man 4.

Confirmed: Marc Webb is Directing Spider-Man Reboot

Despite mixed feelings towards the rushed reboot of Sony’s Spider-Man franchise, it is happening. Spider-Man 4 was canned and a reboot is on its way, set to release only one year off the mark for their planned release of the next installment. It will be based on a story that was already being worked on while Sam Raimi and co. were still on board.

What we knew about the reboot involved a younger Peter Parker back in high school and we heard rumors that Marc Webb was the leading contender for the directing gig. Now it has been confirmed and the (500) Days of Summer director will be bringing Peter Parker back to school as he’s now officially charged with helming the reboot.

This may not be too much of a surprise ...

Hello Marvel Movie fans! (I’m going to avoid using the term “Marvelites”).

With Iron Man 2 kicking off this summer, Thor officially in full production and Captain America secretly in the workings behind the scenes for a summer start, it’s too bad Sony Pictures’ Spider-Man franchise couldn’t get anything going to have their next film out by next summer.

Spider-Man 4 Cancelled! [Updated]

Breaking News: Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire are out of Spider-Man 4! Sony moving forward with Franchise reboot.

Well, I kind of saw this coming. Spider-Man 4 with its issues over villains, Sony vs. Raimi disputes and delays is now confirmed dead.

Many of our readers agreed with what I said in our last post on the confirmed delay of Spider-Man 4 in that perhaps Raimi and Sony should simply part ways and they can take the franchise in another direction or start from scratch.

Now it is confirmed from Nikki Finke and Mike Fleming at Deadline Hollywood that the cast and director have pulled out entirely and Sony will instead go the route of the reboot with Jamie Vanderbilt’s script.

John Malkovich Confirms Vulture in Spider-Man 4?

With the mess that is the delay and behind-the-scenes dispute over villains between Sony and director Sam Raimi, it looks like we just may have a positive piece of news pushing the film in the right direction from a development standpoint. That is, the direction that the film may be made on time…

While appearing on the Italian sports show Quelli Che il Calcio, Malkovich spoke about his involvement and confirmed that he is set to play the villain known as the Vulture in Spider-Man 4.

There’s no word on the other rumor about Anne Hathaway playing Vulturess and I think most of us hope it stays that way.

My Spidey sense is telling me there’s a chance we won’t be getting a quality film in Spider-Man 4. How can we after what we saw from Spider-Man 3 which was plagued with too many characters, sub-par writing and apparent studio interference which forced a major character into a movie where he didn’t belong, right?

Well, things were looking good for the fourth installment however, where director Sam Raimi would again helm, promising that this time he would be in “full control” of the movie unlike last time around. When he said that, he should have clarified that he wouldn’t actually have much control at all… because he doesn’t.

Yesterday was quite a day in the world of comic book movies with more viral marketing for Iron Man 2, the Iron Man 2 trailer premiere(!), Bryan Singer revealing that he’s directing X-Men: First Class, Tobey Maguire keeping tight-lipped about the Vulture/Vulturess being the villains of Spider-Man 4, etc.

Now insert this news item: production on Spider-Man 4 is apparently being halted!

In recent weeks, there’s been some chatter as to what characters, or more specifically, villains, we will see in the upcoming fourth installment to the Spider-Man franchise.

First, we heard arguably crazy speculation that Bruce Campbell’s larger role in Spider-Man 4 would see him playing a villain such as Mysterio. Unlikely in the eyes of many fans, but we followed that up with a report on director Sam Raimi discussing the Spider-Man 4 villains where he admitted he favored the idea of The Lizard but wasn’t keen or familiar with the idea of Carnage.

Then, we finally got one confirmation on the topic of potential villains: Dylan Baker would in fact be returning as Dr. Curt Connors in the next movie but that didn’t necessarily mean he’d be transforming ...

Is The Lizard Spider-Man 4′s Only Villain?

Less than a week ago, Dylan Baker confirmed that he’d be returning as Dr. Curt Connors in Spider-Man 4. At the time, he said he’d be regulated to a small background role similar to his appearances in the last two Spidey films.

Now, comes an insider report from Jim over at Market Saw who’s saying that The Lizard may not only be in Spider-Man 4, but that he’d be the only villain of the movie. This of course would bring the franchise back to its one-villain roots as utilized in the first two movies of the series.

Sam Raimi did say that he loves The Lizard…

Dr. Curt Connors Confirmed For Spider-Man 4

Speculation, here we come!

Dylan Baker, the actor who played the minor role of Dr. Curt Connors in the last two Spider-Man movies has confirmed that he’ll be in Spider-Man 4. Now, this doesn’t mean we’ll be seeing his scaly alter ego known as The Lizard, but it sure wouldn’t be surprising.

Even if The Lizard wasn’t making his appearance, we’d expect Dr. Curt Connors to play at least a small part again. It wouldn’t make sense to have him involved in the plot of Spider-Man 2 & 3 then throw him away.

During the Q&A segment for a Trick ‘r Treat presentation on Wednesday, Mr. Baker was asked about his involvement in the next Sam Raimi Spidey adventure and he said he was on-board but that he’d just be a smaller background character again.

Will Sam Raimi Direct Spider-Man 5 & 6?

It’s been a big week for Sony’s Columbia Pictures and fans of the Spider-Man franchise. A mere week ago we found that the studio has selected Gary Ross to direct and rewrite the upcoming Venom solo film. Ross has a long history with the studio and actor Tobey Maguire and he’s currently involved with the script of Spider-Man 4. While we later heard that Venom might be far off with Ross also being tipped to helm the Spielberg-less Matt Helm remake, there’s no slowing the Spidey franchise one way or another.

Venom Updates: How Will It Tie Into Spider-Man Franchise?

SCI FI Wire had an exclusive interview with Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, the writers behind next month’s Zombieland flick (which looks great!) and they spoke about that other big project they’ve been working on: the script for the Venom solo film.

The last we heard on the Venom project from the writers was from back in April when they couldn’t comment on whether or not this incarnation of Venom would be the same as/related to the wasted version we saw in the highly disappointing Spider-Man 3.

In the interview, Reese and Wernick take questions on the status of the project and when the film could be in production.

Writer Hired For Spider-Man 5 & 6

According to Variety, James Vanderbilt has been picked up by Sony Pictures Entertainment to pen the scripts to another two Spider-Man films.

What’s interesting about this is that Vanderbilt had initially written the first script for Spider-Man 4, a script that director Sam Raimi wasn’t fully in support of. Raimi brought in other writers to do several re-writes but executives at Columbia Pictures and Marvel Studios actually liked Vanderbilt’s ideas.

That’s a tad worrisome seeing how Raimi was involved with the mess that was Spider-Man 3 and Marvel Studios has been dead-on with their first two films; Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk.

A big issue here is that there’s no confirmation on whether or not any of the key players will return for another two installments. Raimi was doubtful of doing a fourth but he eventually came back ...

Does Spider-Man 4′s Next Rewrite Mean We Should Be Worried?

News has surfaced that Gary Ross, writer of such films including Seabiscuit, The Tale of Despereaux, Dave and Lassie in the past and writer/director of some others (that we’ll discuss later), is being brought in to re-write the script of Spider-Man 4.

What does this mean for the movie?

On one side, Ross was likely chosen because of his growing relationship with Sony which includes his directing of a Lance Armstrong cycling film and his work on the in-development Tokyo Suckerpunch.

On the other side, Spider-Man 4’s script is getting yet another rewrite meaning there are major issues with it (probably due to what happened in Spider-Man 3). This leaves me wondering what direction the film will take after the last movie and how, or if, it will lead at all into the Venom spinoff movie we’ve heard a ...

Spider-Man 4 Updates: Mary Jane & Morbius

Sam Raimi, director of the Spider-Man films, revealed back in January of this year that he has an interest in the character of Morbius and that sparked rumors that he would be (one of) the featured villains in the upcoming Spider-Man 4.

To me, this made perfect sense as it would allow the next movie to explore a darker and more realistic tone (compared to the more extreme Sandman and Venom characters). Even more than that, Morbius shares plenty of Marvel Comics history with the Lizard character (Dr. Curt Connors) who we saw introduced in Spider-Man 2 and play an important role in Spider-Man 3.

Did you like Spider-Man 3? I didn’t. Sadly, many fans of the Spider-Man franchise were let down by the third installment of the series but don’t fret! We just may get a return to form with Spider-Man 4.

In an interview with Empire for this May’s issue, Raimi openly talked about some of the problems with Spider-Man 3 and confirmed some rumors we all heard about two summers ago when the movie was released.

Why Do Studios Let Great Movies Die?

The 2007 Toronto International Film Festival ended recently and the 2008 Sundance Film Festival is just around the corner, and these have gotten me thinking (uh oh!).

I’ve been thinking about why it is that some movies that are so mediocre go on to earn hundreds of millions of dollars at the box office while other films that are just as good (and quite often far better) end up unseen not talked about. While I enjoy a good popcorn movie as much as the next guy, I do tend to hold even action and sci-fi movies to a higher standard than the average 14 year old.

So I find it extremely frustrating when movies that seem to be mediocre or worse make incredible amounts of money and give some directors credibility and the opportunity to pump out more schlock, while other ...
