The shortlist of nominees for the 2011 Golden Raspberry Award has been released and a new category has been added – Worst Eye-gouging Misuse of 3D.

As the ball dropped in Times Square and people everywhere sang inebriated versions of “Auld Lang Syne”, it marked the end of a lukewarm movie year. With 557 movies released in 2010, some of them were truly good and others were excruciatingly bad. People could argue all day about what makes a movie truly bad, but thankfully we have the 31st annual Golden Raspberry Awards to help us sort the chaff from the wheat.

Although the official list of nominees won’t release until January 24th, the L.A. Times Award Tracker blog has released the shortlist of nominees for the coveted “Razzie” or Golden Raspberry Award.

The categories this year are pretty much the same as last year – Worst Screenplay, Worst Director, Worst Supporting Actor/Actress, Worst Actor/Actress, ...

Click to continue reading 2011 Razzies Shortlist: The Worst Films and Performances of 2010

When awards season rolls around every year there always seems to be a group of films that are tapped to pick up their share of the major awards. 2010 is no exception and this year the likes of Toy Story 3, Inception, The King’s Speech, The Social Network, Black Swan and The Fighter are among those which have won awards already and look likely to pick up some Oscars as well.

However, when it comes to the Screen Actors Guild (SAG), the Directors Guild of America (DGA) and the Writers Guild of America (WGA), there are rules which often prohibit certain awards favorites from winning in some of the big categories offered by awards ceremonies.

Following the Oscars deeming the scores for Black Swan, True Grit and The Fighter ineligible for ...

Click to continue reading Toy Story 3, The King’s Speech & More Ineligible For WGA Screenplay Awards

This week presents some summer blockbusters on DVD and Blu-ray alongside a pair of instant classics. You may not get a lot of choices this week, but there is definitely something new to watch.

Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz get a second chance to earn bank with Knight and Day, while The Sorcerer’s Apprentice is just happy to be out of Inception‘s limelight – a problem it had when it released in the same week as Chris Nolan’s mind-bending blockbuster.

There is also a sneaky champion amidst the three new releases this week; the best film of the trio actually made the least at this summer’s box office.

Inception retains the number one position at the box office; there’s a killer at large in Wes Craven’s Scream 4; Jennifer’s Body director Karyn Kusama is stuck in a Rut; Shepherds watch their flock in Lore; the Weinstein’s get ready to Raise Hell and grow Corn; it looks like Timur Bekmambetov can do what Spielberg can’t and bring Abraham Lincoln to the screen; after The Spirit comes Will Eisner’s Contract With God and Shawn Levy has a Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day.

Christopher Nolan’s science fiction epic Inception was number one for the third weekend in a row. The Leonardo DiCaprio film grossed an estimated $26 million over the weekend, giving the film a highly impressive total of $191 million. It’s rare these days when an original (and good) film makes this sort of money. It kind of makes me go all soft and ...

Click to continue reading Weekend Movie News Wrap Up: August 1st, 2010

Christopher Nolan’s Inception remained the box office champion over the weekend. The Dark Knight director’s latest film should steal another $44 million worth of moviegoers’ cash by the time Monday morning rolls around.

That would give the Leonardo DiCaprio led film an impressive $144 million by the end of its second weekend. Even more impressive is the fact the film is entirely original – not based on an existing property or showcasing unnecessary 3D. Lets just hope that Warner Bros has already made their ...

Click to continue reading Weekend Movie News Wrap Up: July 25, 2010

This week:

Inception boggles the mind at number one while Nic Cage and Jerry Bruckheimer’s Apprentice has no magic; Sandra Vergara joins Fright Night; Christopher McQuarrie has only One Shot; Sam Raimi’s Oz The Great And Powerful has a start date; Warner Bros. start World War X; two TV stars play Moneyball and lots more.

Box Office

Anyone who didn’t think that Inception wouldn’t open at number one this weekend was very silly indeed. It wasn’t that the film wouldn’t open big, the question was “how big?” - $62 million is the answer. The Christopher Nolan directed film has won itself awesome reviews and strong word-of-mout, meaning that the film should have very impressive legs – if the average Joe isn’t put off by the complex plot. However, the marketing of “James Bond meets The Matrix” would imply that audiences will come.

The Leonardo DiCaprio film shouldn’t have a problem though, ...

Click to continue reading Weekend Movie News Wrap Up: July 18, 2010

Screen Rant’s Paul Young Reviews The Sorcerer’s Apprentice

It’s really not that big of a surprise to me that I walked out of The Sorcerer’s Apprentice screening completely entertained after enjoying every minute of the film. To date, I have enjoyed everything that Jerry Bruckheimer, Jon Turteltaub, and Nicholas Cage work on together for Disney, which consists of both National Treasure films.

In fact, if you enjoyed both of those previous films then there is no reason why you shouldn’t also enjoy this one. The formula for storytelling has remained pretty much the same and just like it did before, it works magic (see what I did there?).

The movie opens some time in the Medieval Age, in the castle of the legendary Arthurian wizard Merlin. With an overly heavy-handed and ...

Click to continue reading The Sorcerer’s Apprentice Review

If you haven’t seen our July Movie Preview then you might not be aware that this month has some choice offerings as far as movies go.

Sure, The Last Airbender turned out to be a major disappointment, but Predators was pretty decent. This week brings us Chris Nolan’s highly-anticipated new film, Inception, along with the Nicolas Cage action/adventure film, The Sorcerer’s Apprentice. In the weeks that follow, we’ll be getting the Angelina Jolie action vehicle Salt, as well as the Paul Rudd and Steve Carell oddball comedy, Dinner for Schmucks. Not a bad lineup.

Over the last month or so, Disney has released a wealth of material for their new film The Sorcerer’s Apprentice.

Typically I get a little burned out on a film if a studio puts out too many clips before the official release, but from the latest trailer to a cool behind-the-scenes look at the movie’s “Fantasia” scene, I keep getting more intrigued by director Jon Turteltaub and producer Jerry Bruckheimer’s family-friendly fantasy.

Take these three new clips for example. In the first (which is actually an extended version of a previous clip), we see Nicolas Cage’s Balthazar Blake duke it out with Alfred Molina’s Maxim Horvath. All the while, a young version of Jay Baruchel’s character, Dave Strutler, tries to stay out of harm’s way.

Besides establishing some of the characters, the first clip shows off ...

Click to continue reading Cool New Clips from The Sorcerer’s Apprentice

The biggest films of July are featured in Screen Rant's monthly movie teaser trailer. Featured are The Last Airbender, Predators, Inception and more.

We’ve decided to add a new recurring feature for you loyal readers. Prior to each month, we will present a teaser for the upcoming slate of films to be released that month, which we’ve discussed here at Screen Rant.

This summer has been fairly weak so far apart from Toy Story 3, but July seems to have more to offer. While much of it is still typical summer popcorn movie fare, a shining light of originality may be found in Inception. But that doesn’t mean it’s the only movie worth seeing.

If the The Twilight Saga: Eclipse buzz is getting on your nerves, you’ll be happy to know its June 30th release date pushes it out of our inaugural teaser. But this upcoming month does kick off with M. Night Shyamalan’s <a title="the ...

Click to continue reading Screen Rant Monthly Movie Preview: July 2010

Disney’s big-budget fantasy adventure, The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, hits theaters in about two weeks. In the meantime, you can check out three new clips from the movie and a featurette that offers a glimpse at the flick’s effects-heavy action and stunt work.

In The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, 1,000-year old magician Balthazar Blake (Nicolas Cage) at long last finds a worthy student in Dave Stutler (Jay Baruchel) – a college physics nerd living in modern-day New York. However, it turns out that the two actually met several years before, when Dave was just a young boy – as you can see in the first clip below.

Quick note – does Cage seem a bit bored to anyone else? It seems as though he’s aiming for a sort of calm, stoic air with Balthazar, but it feels odd. Having seen Cage run ...

Click to continue reading New Clips & Featurette For ‘The Sorcerer’s Apprentice’

New clips have surface from two of this summer’s upcoming family-friendly fantasy adventures – the TV show adaptation The Last Airbender and the new Nicolas Cage flick The Sorcerer’s Apprentice.

First, check out this scene from The Last Airbender in which the Fire Nation’s massive fleet of metallic ships approach the icy shores of the Northern Water Tribe’s land. Comic relief character Sokka (Jackson Rathbone) – who is also a close friend of the last airbender, Aang (Noah Ringer) – is the ever-so observant fellow who mentions the approach of the war vessels to Princess Yue (Seychelle Gabriel).

Disney has released a new featurette called 'Fantasia: The Coolest Scene Ever' and director Jon Turteltaub, producer Jerry Bruckheimer and actor Jay Baruchel talk about why it was their favorite scene to shoot.

Say what you want to about Nicolas Cage but when he teams up with mega-producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Jon Turteltaub a fun and entertaining movie is usually the result (National Treasure 1 & 2).

I will admit that when I first heard about Disney making a full length feature film called The Sorcerer’s Apprentice based on a short scene from their classic animated musical Fantasia, I was extremely skeptical. Let’s be honest, Cage has been very hit (Kick Ass) or miss (Knowing) with his choice of acting roles as of late and making an entire film around a short animated scene is the equivalent of Saturday Night Live making a film from a sketch and we all know how those turn out (are you listening MacGruber?).

Walt Disney Pictures has released a third trailer for their upcoming summer flick The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, which reunites the National Treasure team of producer Jerry Bruckheimer, director Jon Turteltaub, and star Nicolas Cage in a new effects-heavy, family-friendly adventure.

The Sorcerer’s Apprentice revolves around the PG-rated struggle between noble sorcerer Balthazar Blake (Nicolas Cage) and the devious Maxim Horvath (Alfred Molina). Unable to defeat Horvath and his minions alone, Blake recruits the nerdy Dave Stutler (Jay Baruchel) to become his new apprentice and trains him in the elaborate art and science of magic.

This trailer contains a fair amount of new footage that showcases the film’s sleek visual effects, a brief glance at the enchantress Veronica (Monica Bellucci), and Baruchel reprising the “geek who finds himself” character that he voiced most recently in How to ...

Click to continue reading ‘Sorcerer’s Apprentice’ Trailer 3 & Villain Posters

Just one of the many big-budget films getting a release this summer is the Disney fantasy-adventure, The Sorcerer’s Apprentice. It’s been a while since we’ve had any new promo materials for the film but to add to the image gallery we posted last month, we have a new featurette and a batch of new images.

The 3D ogre tale managed to scrape in roughly $72 million worth of green.
[Update: We now have our own mashup trailer for the 2010 Summer Movies!]

Congratulations! You have officially made it through the droll winter season and the spring weather tantrums and are now on the brink of that most wonderful time of the year: When the weather outside is so gorgeous we just have to flock to the dark indoors to catch some of the biggest spectacles that Hollywood can put up on the screen.

If you’re hopping up and down in anticipation of movies like Iron Man 2, Christopher Nolan’s Inception, the animated showdown between Dreamworks’ Shrek Forever After and Pixar’s Toy Story 3 – and for the ladies, a second helping of Sex In The City or an obscure little film called ...

Click to continue reading Screen Rant’s 2010 Summer Movie Preview

The Sorcerer's Apprentice could turn out to be a great fun addition to the summer movie lineup. Check out the new poster and hi-res images in our gallery.

This summer is going to be full of what should be great fun films and the more we find out about The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, the more I think it’s going to be one of those great films. The movie has everything a fan of the family-oriented action/adventure genre could want – magic, dragons, explosions, intrigue, love, and humor.

If you haven’t had a chance to watch either the teaser trailer or the international trailer for The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, then I recommend you do so. Most people are most familiar with Mickey Mouse playing the young apprentice from the animated film Fantasia, but the story actually goes back way further than that. The original concept comes from a poem called Der Zauberlehrling by writer Johann Wolfgang Goethe, back in the 18th century.

Disney has updated the story but not ...

Click to continue reading New ‘Sorcerer’s Apprentice’ Poster & Hi-Res Image Gallery

Thanks to the folks at Latino Review and Coming Soon, we now have the new posters for this summer’s animated sequel Shrek Forever After and the latest Jerry Bruckheimer (Pirates of the Caribbean films) effects extravaganza, The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, for you to check out.

First we have what looks to be the final poster for Shrek Forever After, the fourth (and supposedly last) Shrek film, which finds the famous Ogre (voiced by Mike Meyers) trapped in an alternate reality after he makes a deal with Rumpelstiltskin that — shockingly — doesn’t go the way he planned.

Okay — can Dreamworks please just stick with one title already? It’s either Shrek Forever After 3D or Shrek: The Final Chapter 3D. Of course, they could just call it Shrek: Check Out The Same ...

Click to continue reading New Posters For Shrek 4 & ‘Sorcerer’s Apprentice’
