No Smallville Season 8 for Laura Vandervoort

No Smallville Season 8 for Laura Vandervoort

In the ever continuing downward spiral of Smallville and The CW network, has anyone noticed that the cast for the eighth (And final) season of Smallville does not include Laura Vandervoort who plays Kara / Supergirl?

On top of this coming to the surface at the upfronts, Vandervoort was as surprised as anyone. That’s a real classy way to treat your cast. Despite the absence of her credits for next season, she believes she will probably be back for at least one or two episodes.

There are different potential backgrounds of Supergirl from the DC Universe and The CW is missing out on some interesting story twists by dissing her character, but that’s what you get when you don’t do your homework or fail to see the twist potentials of a character.

Caprica, Smallville and Other Things

Caprica, Smallville and Other Things

Jericho’s loss is Caprica’s gain as I see it.

Fresh off of Jericho, an actor I really enjoyed on NYPD Blue, Esai Morales will be joining the cast of Caprica as Joseph Adama, the father of William Adama and I can’t imagine a more suited actor to play the father to Edward James Olmos. If you’ve ever watched Deadwood, then you might be familiar with Paula Malcomson who’s been cast as the female lead of Amanda, A surgeon who turns out to be a double agent in the film

In case you’ve lived in a cave and not accessed this or other sites chatting about the movie, Caprica is a prequel to Battlestar Galactica (BSG) and is set 50 years before the events that take place in BSG.

Rosenbaum Leaves Smallville, Will The Show Get Even Worse?

Rosenbaum Leaves Smallville, Will The Show Get Even Worse?

Subtitle: And I see the light about The CW.

It’s officially been reported that Michael Rosenbaum, who portrays Clark Kent’s nemesis Lex Luthor on CW’s Smallville, has left the show. The character is going to be replaced by two new baddies. But more on that a little bit later.

He posted the following on his website:

“It is time for me to start the next chapter of my life and career,” Rosenbaum said. “I hope that I gave you some enjoyment over the years and that you found my portrayal of Lex Luthor to be satisfying.”

In that same post, he stated that the executive production team from Smallville hinted at the idea that Lex may show up in season eight.

They go into a little detail on the replacement characters that will fill the evil void that Lex Luthor is leaving behind. One is a dangerously sinister female villain “whose attraction with Clark may prove to be as deadly as kryptonite for him.” They don’t specify anything else about her, but the second nemesis they announced is… Doomsday.

Wow… Smallville Creators Not Sticking Around For Season 8

Wow... Smallville Creators Not Sticking Around For Season 8

Let the rampant speculation begin: Smallville creators and executive producers Alfred Gough and Miles Millar have announced they’re leaving at the end of season 7.

I’m hopeful that as time goes by details of why they’re leaving the show will surface, but for now they wrote a very polite open letter announcing their decision.

Here are a few short quotes from the letter (for the full thing you can check out the source link at the end of this post.):

“As the creators of ‘Smallville’ we look back at 7 amazing years. We look back at 152 episodes. We look back knowing that the show will continue into Season 8 without us. After much heartache and debate we have decided it is time for us to move on.”

Smallville Season 8 Confirmed: Oh… Joy

Smallville Season 8 Confirmed: Oh... Joy

So they’re really going to do it.

Smallville is moving ahead to Season 8. A variety of sites are reporting it based on some press release that I can’t seem to find. Here’s the relevant bit:

“Also renewed were the long-running Thursday night team of ‘Smallville,’ which will begin its eighth season, and ‘Supernatural,’ which will begin its fourth season.”

According to SupermanHomepage.com Kristin Kreuk (Lana Lang) will be back for at least a portion of the season. Michael Rosenbaum (Lex Luthor) and Allison Mack (Chloe Sullivan) are still up in the air, although renegotiations are imminent now that there has been a pick up.

Is Smallville Circling The Drain?

Is Smallville Circling The Drain?

Actually, my first title for this was going to be “Is Smallville Swirling In The Toilet?”, but I thought that might be a bit much.

If you read this site regularly, you’ll know that I’m actually quite a fan of Smallville. But when I like something I tend to hold it to a high standard. Granted, this isn’t high brow entertainment, but it has been fun to watch over the years as Clark has matured from a geeky high school student to a man of responsibility. Also great has been seeing the slide into darkness of Lex Luthor.

However one thing that really drives me nuts is when a TV series hangs on too long. This was the case with the most excellent Stargate SG-1, which should have ended when Richard Dean Anderson left the show and before the wretched Ori storyline began.

Now Smallville is entering “should’ve quit while they were ahead” territory.

Smallville Returns With A Bang

Smallville Returns With A Bang

After a small break that seemed far too long, the seventh season of Smallville picked back up last Thursday and it sent some dark themes our way that I’m not used to seeing from this show.

The creative forces behind Smallville have been hard at work, or have at least pulled out some stops for this episode in their ongoing reinterpretation of the Superman mythology.

OK, I’ve teased long enough here. If you haven’t seen the episode yet, I’m putting out some episode spoilers after the break.

Smallville Still (Stupidly) Clinging To ‘No Flights’ Policy

Smallville Still (Stupidly) Clinging To 'No Flights' Policy

In an interview with TV Guide, Smallville producer Al Gough reiterated that they are still stubbornly sticking with their “no flights, no tights” mantra regarding the show. Personally, I think it’s time that they break the “no flights” half of that rule. I promise, the fans won’t get mad for your going back on your word.

They established that rule at the very beginning of the series, wanting to differentiate it from other Superman shows that had come before and to concentrate on Clark’s humanity. But come on now… that was over seven years ago and the show has come a very long way since then.

Here is Gough’s response to a question regarding whether they would be sticking with their original rule or whether Clark will learn to fly this season:

Review: Smallville Season 7 Premiere

Review: Smallville Season 7 Premiere

So it’s finally here: The Smallville season 7 premiere. They certainly left a lot of cliffhangers in the season 6 finale, and in this episode we get some, but not all the answers.

The episode is called Bizarro, for good reason. Right off the bat, the episode opens with a bang with big, epic special effects scenes including the dam from the previous episode bursting and a subsequent flood, which Clark in an heretofore unseen level of heat vision power, turns into steam with a wide angle burst of his vision. Very cool and a preview of things to come regarding his willingness to finally unleash his powers this season, I’ll bet.

The one lame point in this opening series of scenes was when they showed a father trying to get his son out of the way of the oncoming flood tripping and hitting his head on a rock like some young girl on the run from the villain in a horror movie. But hey, that was minor IMHO.

Moving on… and be warned, full-on spoilers ahead.

JLA Movie Officially Greenlit, Tom Welling Not Superman

JLA Movie Officially Greenlit, Tom Welling Not Superman

In the “old news is good news” department, yesterday Variety confirmed what’s been reported on movie sites (including this one) for quite a while, which is that George Miller (who directed the CGI penguin flick Happy Feet) is now officially onboard to direct the Justice League movie.

Warner Bros. wants to fast-track this and get production rolling ASAP for a 2009 release. Presumably it’s so they can get it well into production before the maybe-happening WGA strike next July.
