A sequel to 'Machete' (rather than 'Sin City 2') looks to be Robert Rodriguez' next directorial effort, with Danny Trejo reprising his role as the eponymous Mexican.

Those of you who were pleased to hear that Robert Rodriguez was finally preparing to begin work on Sin City 2… well, it turns out the Texan filmmaker’s attention has shifted elsewhere, yet again.

Rodriguez is instead moving ahead next with Machete Kills, a sequel to his 2010 feature-length adaptation of the popular Grindhouse faux trailer, Machete. Production on the pulpy flick is expected to get underway by April 2012, with Danny Trejo currently in talks to reprise his role as the titular deadly ex-Federale. Most of the surviving cast members from the first film are likewise expected to return in the Machete followup.

At the 2011 Comic-Con, Rodriguez revealed that two sequels to Machete – titled Machete Kills and Machete Kills Again in Space (no joke) – had already been greenlit, so this announcement isn’t entirely unexpected. Still, with ...

Click to continue reading ‘Machete’ Sequel Will Be Robert Rodriguez’ Next Project

Mickey Rourke gives us a candid take on his participation in films such as 'Iron Man 2,' and 'Sin City 2,' as well as an overview of what it is to fall and rise again in Hollywood.

Mickey Rourke is not an actor who is known for his circumspect actions or speech. He has been enjoying Hollywood’s warm embrace over the past several years, however. So it was somewhat surprising (and wholly refreshing) to hear Rourke speak with an intriguing combination of humility and candor about his recent and past experiences as an actor at this weekends press event for director Tarsem Singh’s latest visual extravaganza, Immortals. Rourke provided some insight into his reservations about his potential participation in Sin City 2, as well as his frustrations while working on Iron Man 2.

The dialogue opened with congratulations to Rourke on his upcoming inclusion in the Hollywood walk of fame. The actor gave an immediate sense of how the discussion would evolve when he said that it probably meant more to us than ...

Click to continue reading Mickey Rourke Talks ‘Sin City 2′, ‘Iron Man 2′ & Hollywood

Robert Rodriguez’ long-delayed Sin City 2 is inching closer and closer to actually happening. The independent filmmaker is all but set to make the comic book sequel his next project – and has even recruited Oscar-winning screenwriter William Monahan to help ensure the final product is worth the wait.

It’s long been expected that Sin City mastermind Frank Miller’s original story, “A Dame to Kill For,” would be the primary basis for the cinematic followup – and, according to the comic book legend, that is indeed the case.

However, Miller – who also received co-directing credit for the Sin City movie – says the sequel will still retain the multi-storyline structure of its predecessor. He also went on to reveal that Sin City 2 is going to feature some brand-new narrative material of his ...

Click to continue reading Frank Miller Provides ‘Sin City 2′ Story Update

Fans have been eagerly waiting to see if Robert Rodriguez would make good on his promise that he would select Sin City 2 his followup to Spy Kids: All the Time in the World.

Rodriguez revealed earlier this year that financing for the graphic novel sequel had been secured and production could begin in the near future – once he and his collaborator (original Sin City author Frank Miller) had put the finishing touches on the screenplay.

Heat Vision has learned that Academy Award-winner William Monahan (The Departed) has been brought on to add the finishing touches to the most recent Sin City 2 draft penned by Miller. The tentative plan is for production on the film to commence once the shooting script has been locked.

At least six years, two grindhouse flicks, and three hyperactive children’s movies (including this year’s Spy Kids 4) will have passed by the time Robert Rodriguez actually gets to directing the eagerly-awaited Sin City 2.

Rodriguez talked up the Sin City sequel at the 2011 Comic-Con, saying that Miller has almost completed a final draft of the script and that the project could begin filming before the year is out. Familiar words, we know.

Robert Rodriguez is hosting a big Hall H panel at Comic-Con 2011 for his production company Quick Draw Productions, but what he’s showing is rather mysterious. The vague description of the panel only reveals that he’ll be unveiling “exclusive material” for upcoming projects as well as announcing his “latest top-secret project.” What could it be?

We have an exciting guess, so join us as Screen Rant live blogs the panel and heads to Rodriguez’s exclusive event later in the day to follow along and share your thoughts and predictions.

Robert Rodriguez remains as busy a filmmaker as ever, but it’s been a while since he gave an update on Sin City 2, the followup to his 2005 cinematic adaptation of Frank Miller’s grisly graphic novel Noir series.

Rodriguez discussed the Sin City sequel with fans during a Facebook livechat this past weekend, and revealed that it could be the next project on his to-do list, after Spy Kids 4.

Sin City 2 – the script for which Rodriguez says he and Miller are working on – will likely not be a traditional sequel to its predecessor since, well, a lot of the central characters died in that film.
As is the case with a lot of in-development projects these days, the long-awaited Sin City 2 has been on-again-off-again for awhile. We finally got some semi-concrete news way back in May last year when the sequel was said to be moving forward and just before Christmas last year director Robert Rodriguez said it was still in the cards.

Fast-forward seven months and we have another little update regarding Sin City 2. Rodriguez recently spoke to the guys over at Digital Spy where he assured fans that a sequel is still in the works to his brilliant adaptation of Frank Millar’s Sin City graphic novels.

Rodriguez has Spy Kids 4 to shoot next (this September) but he hasn’t forgotten about the continuing adventures of Sin City‘s stark black-and-white world:

Mickey Rourke and Robert Downey Jr. are two of Hollywood's biggest comeback kids. We trace the path of their careers and controversies, leading up to their epic showdown in Iron Man 2.

There are certain moments in cinema that stand out as being truly iconic. Sometimes it’s a line of dialogue that goes on to become a revered quote – other times it’s a scene, or a song or even the opening credits (see: Star Wars).

However, sometimes an iconic moment in cinema is achieved with nothing more than the presence of the actors onscreen – a moment where the context, history and personality the actors bring to the table transcends the actual movie itself. The main ones talked about were the two of most interest to fans right now - Sin City 2 and Machete. But if you’re interested, there’s also some stuff in there about another Spy Kids movie.

For months now all we’ve really had on the Sin City 2 front is “it’s happening… it’s on its way… it’s coming… at some point!…” Well, maybe not that exactly but you get my point. Back in May this year, we reported that Sin City 2 was finally moving forward, with Rodriguez saying he’d talked to “key players” about the sequel. A couple of months later Alexis Bledel (the blue-eyed girl from the first Sin City) talked about how her character would fit into the sequel considering her character was [SPOILER] presumably murdered by Josh Hartnett’s “The Man” at the end of the first film. [END SPOILER] From what she revealed it leads us to believe it’s going to be – as fellow Screen Rant writer Kofi Outlaw called it – a prequel, midquel and sequel.

Alexis Bledel, that blue-eyed badgirl from Sin City recently talked to MTV News about the long, long, awaited sequel to Robert Rodriguez’s cinematic recreation of Frank Miller’s gritty, noir graphic novel series. Bledel didn’t know much, but had heard a rumor that a script for Sin City 2 was floating around and that her character, Becky, was in it.

But wait, Becky got capped at the very end of Sin City…

And so the plot thickens. That was my best “noir lead-in,” like it?

Seriously though, Bledel didn’t spill much more than the fact that the script she’d heard about would require her to essentially come back from the dead - unless of course the new batch of yarns being spun in Sin City 2 take ...

Click to continue reading Sin City 2: Prequel, Midquel AND Sequel???

Movie fans rejoice!

With the recent build-up of projects that Robert Rodriguez has on his plate, coupled with past comments of it not happening anytime soon, it seemed like the possibility of a Sin City 2 was so far away that it wasn’t worth thinking about. And yet, in a recent interview with IGN, Rodriguez revealed quite the opposite: He’s already talking to some key players about the sequel.

While promoting the Blu-ray release of Sin City (as he was when he confirmed that the Barbarella movie is dead), Rodriguez gave an update on the progress of the long awaited sequel. It’s certainly good news for those wanting more of the stylized, violent black-and-white world:

“People have been talking about Sin City 2 since the first one came out… Whenever I’m out and about, people say, ‘When’s Sin City ...

Click to continue reading Sin City 2 Finally Moving Forward

Moviehole is quoting a “rather high profile producer friend” who says that Jolie is in “serious talks” for the sequel. Jolie’s name has been mentioned in conjunction with the role since the release of the first film and many believed that she had already met with Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller. However, things went quiet as the sequel languished at the bottom of Rodriguez’s to-do list and the matter was forgotten.

The report also states that although the Weinstein’s haven’t lost rights to the sequel – they could if production doesn’t begin soon.
Well we once again discovered the benefits of patience.

Yesterday IESB ran a story stating that the cash strapped Weinstein Company had let the rights to a Sin City sequel lapse and that the film would be produced by Robert Rodriguez’ Trouble Maker studios – but financed by a private equity group. However, someone at the Weinstein Company got wind of the story and said “Hold on a minute – that’s not true!” Weinstein Lawyer Bert Fields issued a statement to Entertainment Weekly saying:

[UPDATE: Nerverackers has been pulled from Dimension Films' 2010 release slate. See Post for Details.]

Recently at SXSW, fanboy favorite Robert Rodriguez shed light on some of the projects he has coming up: Sin City 2, Machete and Nerverackers.

Check out what the famed director had to say on the status of the three films.

.

SIN CITY 2

The first is the much awaited and anticipated Sin City 2, a film promised by pretty much everyone involved to be definitely getting made at some point. But that point has seemed like a dot in the distance to us fans ever since the first one was released in 2005. For awhile, it seemed like Rodriguez was following in Grindhouse buddy Quentin Tarantino’s trend of promising us films, and then taking forever to make them (Inglourious Basterds ring a ...

Click to continue reading Rodriguez Talks ‘Sin City 2′, ‘Machete’ And ‘Nerverackers’ [UPDATED]

Will the box office disappointment of Watchmen affect future superhero movies?

Well the totals are in, and Watchmen is nowhere near to being the box office smash many of us expected it to be.

After a solid $55 million opening weekend, Watchmen suffered a 67% second week drop-off, earning just $18 million for a total two-week domestic gross of $86 million (approx $112 million worldwide). Those earnings are far short of Watchmen‘s reported $120 million budget, not to mention the astronomical cost of a marketing campaign so intense it seemed like Rorschach was making a run for The White House.

Now that Watchmen is in real danger of being a box office flop, it’s time to ask the hard question: has Watchmen‘s underperformance killed “comic book movies?”

DEFINING THE ‘COMIC BOOK MOVIE’
