Robert Rodriguez Talks ‘Sin City 2′ and ‘Machete Kills’

Following a year of rumors about Robert Rodriguez’ next directorial choice, the filmmaker has confirmed that he will be shooting the sequels Machete Kills and Sin City: A Dame to Kill For back-to-back this summer.

As additional insurance that Sin City 2 will be arriver sooner than later – the film now has an October 2013 release date – and has been confirmed for 3D.

Empire managed to catch up with (or corner, if you prefer) Rodriguez while he was in attendance at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival. The director had some eyebrow-raising information to offer about both the Machete and Sin City sequel – beginning with his promise that A Dame to Kill For will imitate the drawing style of Frank Miller’s source material, more than its predecessor:

‘Sin City 2′ Lands a Fall 2013 Release Date; Will Be 3D

Even though Robert Rodriguez has been promising that he will in fact be making a second Sin City movie sooner than later (since last summer, at least), it wasn’t until Dimension Films officially confirmed the project – fully titled Frank Miller’s Sin City: A Dame to Kill For – that most fans accepted the news as fact.

Dimension Films has unveiled another press release – this time, revealing that A Dame to Kill For will hit theaters in the U.S. on October 4th, 2013. In addition, the studio has confirmed the return of important players like Jessica Alba and Mickey Rourke, while also teasing the involvement of other “huge names” in pivotal roles.

Mel Gibson Circling ‘Machete Kills’; Robert Rodriguez Still Attached to Direct

Following earlier, albeit at the time seemingly fanciful reports, that director Robert Rodriguez was hoping to snag Mel Gibson and Michelle Williams for the sequel to his Grindhouse faux-trailer-turned feature film, Machete, it now sounds as though Gibson is actually very interested in the project.

While there’s no update on Williams, at least not yet, we’re now getting word that Gibson is in negotiations for an unspecified role in the Danny Trejo-starring movie, titled Machete Kills.

Mickey Rourke & Rosario Dawson Confirmed for ‘Sin City 2′

One thing most people (including the Screen Rant podcast crew) seem to agree on, with regards to Sin City: A Dame to Kill For (a.k.a Sin City 2) is that Oscar-nominee Mickey Rourke reprising his acclaimed turn as scarred bruiser Marv is a key ingredient for the sequel to work. The notoriously candid actor has previously humored reporters on the subject, but refrained from actually declaring his commitment to the project.

Robert Rodriguez has now confirmed that Rourke will be returning for Sin City 2, a followup to his first adaptation of Frank Miller’s popular neo-Noir comic book series. ‘Sin City 2′ Officially in Production; Titled ‘A Dame to Kill For’

The long wait is over, Sin City fans. The sequel to Robert Rodriguez’ adaptation of acclaimed comic book creator Frank Miller’s dark noir tales is going into production under the official title of A Dame to Kill For.

The news was confirmed by Dimension Films, which sent out an official press release that you can read below.

Robert Rodriguez To Shoot Both ‘Sin City 2′ & ‘Machete’ Sequel This Year

Texas-based independent filmmaker Robert Rodriguez (naturally) showed up at the South by Southwest (SXSW) 2012 Film Festival, where – in addition to performing a handful of tunes from the original soundtracks for his films like Desperado, From Dusk Till Dawn, and Machete – he revealed that he is launching a new animation company called Quickdraw Animation, which will specialize in CG-animated fare, ranging from family-friendly flicks to a long-planned Heavy Metal movie.

However, the “big” news (as far as many Rodriguez fans are concerned) that the filmmaker had to offer is that he intends to begin shooting the long-delayed Sin City 2 later this year, after completing production on the sequel, Machete Kills.

‘Machete’ Sequel Will Be Robert Rodriguez’ Next Project

Those of you who were pleased to hear that Robert Rodriguez was finally preparing to begin work on Sin City 2… well, it turns out the Texan filmmaker’s attention has shifted elsewhere, yet again.

Rodriguez is instead moving ahead next with Machete Kills, a sequel to his 2010 feature-length adaptation of the popular Grindhouse faux trailer, Machete. Production on the pulpy flick is expected to get underway by April 2012, with Danny Trejo currently in talks to reprise his role as the titular deadly ex-Federale. Most of the surviving cast members from the first film are likewise expected to return in the Machete followup.

‘Sin City 2′ Snags ‘Departed’ Writer William Monahan

Fans have been eagerly waiting to see if Robert Rodriguez would make good on his promise that he would select Sin City 2 his followup to Spy Kids: All the Time in the World.

Rodriguez revealed earlier this year that financing for the graphic novel sequel had been secured and production could begin in the near future – once he and his collaborator (original Sin City author Frank Miller) had put the finishing touches on the screenplay.

Heat Vision has learned that Academy Award-winner William Monahan (The Departed) has been brought on to add the finishing touches to the most recent Sin City 2 draft penned by Miller. The tentative plan is for production on the film to commence once the shooting script has been locked.

Robert Rodriguez Says ‘Sin City 2′ Headed Into Production

At least six years, two grindhouse flicks, and three hyperactive children’s movies (including this year’s Spy Kids 4) will have passed by the time Robert Rodriguez actually gets to directing the eagerly-awaited Sin City 2.

Rodriguez talked up the Sin City sequel at the 2011 Comic-Con, saying that Miller has almost completed a final draft of the script and that the project could begin filming before the year is out. Familiar words, we know.

In an interview with We Got This Covered, Rodriguez revealed that Sin City 2 has also secured the necessary funding to begin moving forward. According to the independent filmmaker, he and Miller just need to put the finishing touches on the screenplay before shooting will commence.

As is the case with a lot of in-development projects these days, the long-awaited Sin City 2 has been on-again-off-again for awhile. We finally got some semi-concrete news way back in May last year when the sequel was said to be moving forward and just before Christmas last year director Robert Rodriguez said it was still in the cards.

Fast-forward seven months and we have another little update regarding Sin City 2. Rodriguez recently spoke to the guys over at Digital Spy where he assured fans that a sequel is still in the works to his brilliant adaptation of Frank Millar’s Sin City graphic novels.

For months now all we’ve really had on the Sin City 2 front is “it’s happening… it’s on its way… it’s coming… at some point!…” Well, maybe not that exactly but you get my point. Back in May this year, we reported that Sin City 2 was finally moving forward, with Rodriguez saying he’d talked to “key players” about the sequel. A couple of months later Alexis Bledel (the blue-eyed girl from the first Sin City) talked about how her character would fit into the sequel considering her character was [SPOILER] presumably murdered by Josh Hartnett’s “The Man” at the end of the first film. Alexis Bledel, that blue-eyed badgirl from Sin City recently talked to MTV News about the long, long, awaited sequel to Robert Rodriguez’s cinematic recreation of Frank Miller’s gritty, noir graphic novel series. Bledel didn’t know much, but had heard a rumor that a script for Sin City 2 was floating around and that her character, Becky, was in it.

But wait, Becky got capped at the very end of Sin City…

And so the plot thickens. That was my best “noir lead-in,” like it?

Sin City 2 Finally Moving Forward

Movie fans rejoice!

With the recent build-up of projects that Robert Rodriguez has on his plate, coupled with past comments of it not happening anytime soon, it seemed like the possibility of a Sin City 2 was so far away that it wasn’t worth thinking about. And yet, in a recent interview with IGN, Rodriguez revealed quite the opposite: He’s already talking to some key players about the sequel.

Jolie In Talks For Sin City 2 Again?

Days after The Weinstein Company released a statement saying that they still owned the rights to Sin City 2 comes news from Moviehole that negotiations have started up again with Angelina Jolie to star as Ava in the ”A Dame To Kill For” segment of the movie.

Moviehole is quoting a “rather high profile producer friend” who says that Jolie is in “serious talks” for the sequel. Jolie’s name has been mentioned in conjunction with the role since the release of the first film and many believed that she had already met with Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller. However, things went quiet as the sequel languished at the bottom of Rodriguez’s to-do list and the matter was forgotten.
