Day-Lewis and Del Toro May Star in Scorsese’s ‘Silence’

It seems for Martin Scorsese being in post-production in one movie (Shutter Island) and shooting another (apparently – a documentary about George Harrison) doesn’t stop the man from thinking ahead. He is hoping to make his next movie, Silence, an adaptation of a book he’s had his eye on for eight years now.

The film will be based on a Japanese novel by Shusaku Endo and is:

“…set in the 17th century as two Jesuit priests face violence and persecution when they travel to Japan to locate their mentor and to spread the gospel of Christianity.”

Being unfamiliar with the source novel I can’t speak of whether or not it would make a good film, but what excites me about the project is three names; Martin Scorsese, Daniel Day-Lewis and Benicio Del Toro. An all-time great director, one of the greatest actors living today and an actor who has proven himself time and time again, respectively.

Day-Lewis and Del Toro are in negotiations right now to play the two lead roles, along with Gael Garcia Bernal for a supporting one, and the film will be written by Jay Cocks (Gangs of New York). There is no domestic distributor for the film as of yet but it will be developed by Scorsese himself along with Graham King and will be financed by King’s own GK Films.

Anything that has Scorsese’s or Day-Lewis’ name attached to it I will see no questions asked… they are both just that damned good. That’s not forgetting Del Toro either, but it just seems the other two have been cemented as legends, if you want to say, of the business.
