The nominations are out for the 37th Annual Saturn Awards and they include such favorites as 'Inception,' 'Harry Potter,' 'True Grit' and 'Shutter Island.' Read the full list of nominees here.

As we edge ever closer to the biggest movie award ceremony around, the Oscars, we have another set of nominations to mull over: The 37th Annual Saturn Awards.

While the Oscars, Golden Globes and the BAFTAs tend to recognize the more “serious” films (some would say in a way that is out of touch), award ceremonies like the Saturn Awards nominate films that average moviegoers would likely champion as their favorites of the year – not to mention the ceremony also recognizes the best TV shows and DVD release the year had to offer.

Last year the Saturn Awards were dominated by a little film called Avatar (you may have heard of it), but as you’ll see below fan favorite Inception dominates things this year with a whopping nine nominations, while other popular films ...

Click to continue reading Inception Leads 2011 Saturn Award Nominees

The year is coming to a close, so we're looking back at the top 10 moments at the movies in 2010. Check out our list and see if your favorites made our highlight reel.

As 2010 comes to an end, most sites are busy compiling top 10 lists ranking the best films of the year. While I always appreciate a good top 10 movie list, I’ve slowly come around to the opinion that at year’s end, it’s not just the discussion of entire films that dominates the talk around my holiday dinner table, but also the best scenes and/or moments that stuck in moviegoers’ minds.

So, following in the tradition started by our list of the best movie moments of 2009, I’d once again like to submit to you, the readers, Screen Rant’s top 10 movie moments of 2010.

This was an odd year in cinema. 2010 started off with moviegoers still caught up in the phenomenon of James Cameron’s Avatar; people were wondering just ...

Click to continue reading The Top 10 Movie Moments of 2010

When awards season rolls around every year there always seems to be a group of films that are tapped to pick up their share of the major awards. 2010 is no exception and this year the likes of Toy Story 3, Inception, The King’s Speech, The Social Network, Black Swan and The Fighter are among those which have won awards already and look likely to pick up some Oscars as well.

However, when it comes to the Screen Actors Guild (SAG), the Directors Guild of America (DGA) and the Writers Guild of America (WGA), there are rules which often prohibit certain awards favorites from winning in some of the big categories offered by awards ceremonies.

Following the Oscars deeming the scores for Black Swan, True Grit and The Fighter ineligible ...

Click to continue reading Toy Story 3, The King’s Speech & More Ineligible For WGA Screenplay Awards

There are plenty of threats to the entertainment industry every year, but movie piracy consistently comes up as the biggest. Authorities continue to seek avenues to shut down the illegal downloading of movies, but apparently it is not enough. In 2010, nearly 100 million downloads were recorded – and those were just the top ten most pirated movies of the year.

The misconception with pirated movies is that those who watch on their computer are not actually going to the theater. For the most part, we can assume this is true. But when a film like Avatar comes in at the top spot with 16.5 million illegal downloads, one must wonder how many of those people also contributed to the movie’s record-breaking $2.7 billion at the worldwide box office.

We’re now into awards season once more (time flies, doesn’t it?), with the Emmys having come and gone already. Now we have the annual 2010 Scream Awards which celebrates the more fan-friendly type of movies and TV shows that the Oscars and the Emmys might not honor. And the great thing is YOU get to vote for the winners!

Last year they honored such fan-favorites as Star Trek, Watchmen and Fringe with nominations, which I’m sure pleased many of you. Even if they still nominate some questionable movies, there’s no doubting that for the most part, the Scream Awards are a lot more in line with the majority of the movie going audience who pay to see movies purely to be entertained.

Even if the Scream Awards tend to honor the “right” movies however, this ...

Click to continue reading 2010 Scream Award Nominations

Last week’s DVD/Blu-ray release line-up was a brilliant one for home video crowds with a flurry of big releases. This week has a few worth the trip itself, but the number has dropped dramatically.

Thankfully, those popular titles from theaters at the beginning of this year are finally popping up in stores. We’ve got a Leonardo DiCaprio mind-bender, a John Travolta shoot ‘em up, a classic comedy and a piece of magic.

All of the following releases can be found on DVD and Blu-ray.

Following the successful implementation of 3-D in James Cameron's Avatar, Martin Scorsese is admitting that he could see himself dabbling in the third dimension as well.

By this point it’s not exactly new to say that Avatar has drastically changed many moviegoers’ attitudes toward 3D filmmaking – a technology that was previously relegated to cheesy horror films and cartoons. No matter what you might have thought of its story, Avatar did succeed in creating a breathtaking visual experience – potentially unmatched since George Lucas wowed audiences in 1977 with the first Star Wars film.

However, even in recent years, the films enjoying 3D treatments are still limited to certain genres: animated features, horror films, as well as blockbuster franchises that focus on large-scale action sequences. No one has made a genuine attempt to apply the technology to a more traditional, dramatic project… at least not yet.

But just because it hasn’t been done doesn’t mean Martin Scorsese isn’t thinking about it – according to an interview he ...

Click to continue reading Scorsese Going 3D?

This weekend the box office stays at Shutter Island; Katee Sackhoff gets her own pilot; Freida Pinto gets involved in the War of the Gods; we get the team-ups we’ve always wanted – Woody Allen along with Owen Wilson and Ryan Reynolds and Nicolas Cage as cavemen in The Croods!

Box Office

Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese remained kings of the box office as Shutter Island banked another $21 million to bring its total to $75 million. It looks like this just might out-gross The Departed to be the duo’s highest grossing film.

Bruce Willis’ Cop Out was second with a weekend take of $17 million. The film also stars Tracy Morgan and Seann William Scott. Cop Out, as every review and article that I’ve read states, is the first film that Kevin Smith has directed that he didn’t write. I just didn’t want to feel left out on ...

Click to continue reading Weekend Movie News Wrap Up: February 28, 2010

Continuing with our ‘Life of Convenience’ initiative, we here at Screen Rant have a new movie promo roundup to share with you, this time in the form of three new featurettes for three highly-anticipated upcoming movies.

The movies du jour are Martin Scorsese’s Shutter Island, Tim Burton’s adaptation of Alice In Wonderland and Dreamworks’ new CGI animated film, How to Train Your Dragon. If you want to get a better look at any one (or all three) of them, then you’ve come to the right place.

First we’ll take a look at the Shutter Island featurette. The movie stars Leonardo DiCaprio as a federal Marshal who travels to a remote psychiatric facility to track down a missing patient. The deeper he looks into the case, however, the more the Marshal’s mind begins to come apart.

To quote the band Weezer, “Say It Ain’t So…”

Over the holiday weekend there was a lot of rumor circling Martin Scorsese, whose new film Shutter Island premiered in theaters overseas (we review it HERE).

We’ve already covered one rumor stating that Scorsese and Robert De Niro are collaborating on a new mob movie, but we have yet to report on the rumor (started by the Danish press) that Scorsese was approached during Shutter Island‘s Berlin premiere about doing a remake of his iconic film, Taxi Driver, by none other than director Lars von Trier (Antichrist).

The rumor mill was churning out word that von Trier had approached Scorsese about doing a new version of Taxi Driver, with Robert De Niro possibly reprising his Oscar-nominated role as Travis Bickle. Scorsese was said to be ‘mulling it over.’

While some sites ...

Click to continue reading Rumor Patrol: Taxi Driver Remake?

Shutter Island is a surprising, flawed, gorgeous and interesting movie that you definitely need to see at least twice.

Screen Rant’s Kofi Outlaw reviews Shutter Island

This is one of those reviews where I feel totally chained by the NO SPOILER rule. After all, it’s almost impossible to talk about Martin Scorsese’s Shutter Island without discussing the film in its entirety. Shutter Island isn’t one of those simple “love it” or “hate it” movie experiences – this is one of those films that makes you go, “Hmmmm…”

Leonardo DiCaprio stars as Federal Marshal Teddy Daniels, a hard-ass cop who gets called out to a remote psychiatric ward off the New England shore (I’ll let you guess the name of the island).
Today we have another movie promo roundup to share with you: A new clip from The Crazies, a remake of the George Romero horror flick about a town whose inhabitants go nuts on each other; we also have the Superbowl TV spot for the Martin Scorsese adaptation of Shutter Island, which will air during the big game this weekend.

No need to thank us for rounding this all up for you, either. It’s all part of my Screen Rant “Lifestyle of Convenience” initiative (which is forecasted to knock $2 off of the national deficit this year).

With the mega-sporting event of the Superbowl rolling around once more, for us movie fans it means that the biggest studios in the business will be paying money (A LOT of it – $3 million to be exact) to run 30-second TV spots during the event.

Adage has the info on which studios have bought ad space and which movies they will be advertising, so read on below to find out.

During Superbowl XLIV on February 7th this year, you’ll be seeing ads from three of the biggest studios: Universal, Paramount and Walt Disney.

First, Paramount has bought the most amount of spots with a total of three and they will be advertising Iron Man 2, Shutter Island and The Last Airbender, all of which are highly anticipated around these parts (all three made Screen Rant’s <a ...

Click to continue reading Which Movies Are Getting Ads at Super Bowl XLIV?

We know you've been waiting for it - here's our list of the most anticipated movies of 2010!

As we come to the end of 2009, it’s time to look forward and put together our list of our most anticipated movies of 2010.

Last year could have been worse – 5 of our 10 most anticipated movies of 2009 turned out to live up to our expectations (including Watchmen, Up, and Star Trek), while the other five ranged from mediocre (Public Enemies) to downright disappointing (Terminator Salvation, Wolverine, Transformers 2). Of course “most anticipated” does not necessarily mean “movies we think are going to be awesome” – it’s “movies we hope are going to be awesome.”

Back in June of this year the first trailer appeared for Shutter Island, Martin Scorsese’s latest collaboration with favorite leading man, Leonardo DiCaprio. It was creepy-as-hell and solidified it on my list of most anticipated movies of 2009. Unfortunately a couple of months later news hit that Paramount had moved the release date from October 2nd this year to February 19th next year. As a movie fan – as well as a follower of daily movie news – that ranks right up there with the most annoying things to happen.

A second theatrical trailer surfaced at the start of last month that even though it wasn’t as effective the first (maybe it was the initial exposure to the creepy material that lead to the effect it had on me) but nonetheless made it look great. ...

Click to continue reading Shutter Island Third Trailer

Update: Laeta Kalogridis is female NOT male. I apologize. Changes have been noted.

Dreamworks’ adaptation of Masamune Shirow’s manga/anime classic Ghost In The Shell has snagged Laeta Kalogridis to adapt Shirow’s futuristic vision into a live-action 3D blockbuster. Kalogridis has penned such past gems as Oliver Stone’s Alexander and the American alt-history epic, Pathfinder, but is poised to be a breakout name for HER work adapting author Dennis Lehane’s novel Shutter Island into a Martin Scorsese film, which will be hitting theaters early next year.

A second trailer for Martin Scorsese’s adaptation of Shutter Island hit the Web a few days ago and we thought you’d like a (belated) look at it. If you haven’t heard, the film is adapted from the Dennis Lehane (Mystic River, Gone Baby Gone) novel and stars Leonardo DiCaprio as U.S. Marshall Teddy Daniels, who travels to the titular island in Massachusetts’ Outer Harbor to help track down a murderous patient who has escaped from the island’s hospital for the criminally insane.

Of course, once Daniels and his partner Chuck (Mark Ruffalo) arrive on Shutter Island the proverbial you-know-what hits the proverbial fan, and it is quickly revealed that nothing – the island, the hospital, the missing patient or even the Marshalls themselves – is what it seems.
