Tim Hill is crafting a contemporary 'Short Circuit' reboot that no one really asked for, but the director truly believes that with a just few modifications, he can provide a movie that everyone can love.

In the original Short Circuit, Johnny-5 was a robot programmed to put an end to the Cold War. A lighting strike caused the robot to become sentient, and Johnny-5 aborted his killer programming and evolved into a robot with a heart of gold. This non-threatening and cute robot paved the way for similarly-themed movies like The Iron Giant and Wall-E.

So it’s no surprise that the beloved ’80s movie is getting rebooted, although this particular reboot may not be as light and endearing as its predecessor. In fact, director Tim Hill is hoping to make the film slightly darker and edgier while maintaining its family-friendly context.

It’s a tall order for a remake that no one really asked for, but Hill truly believes that a new Short Circuit is just the thing ...

Click to continue reading ‘Short Circuit’ Director Describes Rebooted Plot Details & Johnny 5

The 'Short Circuit' remake adds a 'Dr. Doolittle 2' writer to go with its 'Garfield: A Tale of Two Kitties' director. To say this remake is being envisioned as a kids film would be an understatement.

The Short Circuit remake has been a bit of an odd prospect. In fact, unlike so many other upcoming remakes and reboots, the jury is still kind of out on whether this particular project is a good or bad thing. While children of the ’80s like myself have fond memories of the original John Badham film starring Steve Guttenberg and Fisher Stevens, there’s a whole new generation that is pretty much unawares that that film existed. According to our own Screen Rant rules for remakes, that means this remake is fair game.

Of course, the news that Alvin and the Chipmunks and Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties director Tim Hill was going to be helming the Short Circuit remake has been something of a mixed blessing - so news ...

Click to continue reading ‘Short Circuit’ Remake Snags Writer

The reports are in – a remake of the hit sci-fi/comedy Short Circuit… is ALIVE!

On a more serious note: a Short Circuit remake has actually been in the works since 2009, back when Paul Blart: Mall Cop helmer Steve Carr was attached to the project – with Dan Milano (Greg the Bunny, Robot Chicken) handling scripting duties.

According to Deadline, Dimension Films is currently working out the details of a deal with director Tim Hill (Alvin and the Chipmunks) to call the shots on the new Short Circuit. Hill is also up to supervise a new draft of the screenplay, though there’s no word yet on who his collaborator will be.

Early this summer, we announced that Dimension Films was in the process of giving Johnny 5 a remake-over with a new Short Circuit film. They just about had all of the pre-production people in place to make it happen; all they needed was a director. Dan Milano (Greg the Bunny) was putting together the script; David Foster, who produced the original, was returning to produce the remake and joining him were Ryan E. Heppe and John Hyde. So where did Dimension Films go to find a director? Where everyone else goes when they need to find something, of course – the mall.

Steve Carr, who directed 2009 surprise hit Paul Blart: Mall Cop, has been chosen to direct the Short Circuit remake and that just means one thing – a embarrassingly, unfunny actor will surely be cast as the ...

Click to continue reading ‘Paul Blart’ Director Helming Short Circuit Remake

The Hollywood remake machine is at it again and it would seem that none of our favorite 80’s films are safe. Karate Kid, Footloose and The Breakfast Club were all recently announced as remakes and now we can add Short Circuit to the growing list of iconic 80’s films slated for a remakeover.

Dimension Films is moving full steam ahead with Short Circuit and they have chosen writer Dan Milano to prep a script. David Foster, who produced the first Short Circuit, is back to produce the remake and will work alongside Ryan E. Heppe and John Hyde.

For those too young to remember Short Circuit, the story was about a group of five advanced robots created by Newton Crosby (Steve Guttenberg) for the US government, as replacements for military Special Forces. After lighting strikes robot number five, he ...

Click to continue reading Johnny Five is Alive Again!
