Weekend Box Office Wrap Up: January 22, 2012

The fourth instalment of the Underworld franchise, Underworld Awakening, topped the box office over the weekend after grossing an estimated $25.4 million. The Kate Beckinsale starrer is doing good business considering that the first installment in the series opened in 2003. That film grossed $21 million on its debut, for a $51 million final total.

Underworld: Evolution scored $26 million when it opened in 2006, on its way to a $62 million final tally. The third, a Beckinsale-free entry released in 2009, subtitled Rise of the Lycans, grossed $20 million during its first weekend and topped out at $45 million. CBS Orders Modern ‘Sherlock Holmes’ Pilot (In Spite of BBC’s ‘Sherlock’)

Update: ‘Sherlock’ Producer Warns CBS: We Will Protect Our Series (Legally)

CBS is looking to bring even more Sherlock Homes to the entertainment industry by announcing today that they have ordered pilot for Elementary, a modern-day take on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s iconic Sherlock Holmes cases by former Medium producer and writer, Robert Doherty.

This series, which will also have A Gifted Man and Unforgettable executive producers Sarah Timberman and Carl Beverly serving as producers, would mark the second Sherlock Holmes-based series currently on television.

In 2010, the BBC and PBS premiered Sherlock, which, similar to CBS’ Elementary, is a modern-day telling of the adventures of Sherlock Holmes and his chronicler Dr. Watson. The show stars Benedict Cumberbatch (Star Trek 2) and Martin Freeman (The Hobbit), respectively.

Weekend Box Office Wrap Up: January 15th, 2012

Mark Wahlberg’s latest effort Contraband (co-starring Kate Beckinsale) topped the box office over the Martin Luther King weekend. The thriller should see out the four days with a great $30 million gross, or $24.1 million for three days.

Wahlberg is something of an inconsistent star, with audiences mainly going to see his action/thriller efforts (like Contraband), although Oscar winner, The Fighter, was something of an exception, grossing $93 million. In fact, Contraband (read our review) has had one of the best openings in Marky Mark’s movie career, with top honors going to Planet of the Apes ($68 million) and A Perfect Storm ($41 million), both of which went on to gross over $180 million domestically. Weekend Box Office Wrap Up: January 8, 2012

Low budget schlock-fest The Devil Inside topped the box office chart over the weekend and scared up a frightening $34.5 million. The film was picked up by Paramount Pictures’ Insurge imprint for $1 million dollars, and it already turned a profit following its midnight showings. The Devil Inside combines two popular horror staples, the exorcism pic and the “found footage” film and this combination appears to be a winner for Paramount, who also have the Paranormal Activity franchise as a lucrative money maker.

The Devil Inside was given a heavy marketing push by Paramount, and it opened big despite poor reviews (read ours). Most horror films have a massive dip during their second weekend and this shouldn’t be any different, probably even more so, due to bad word of mouth about that ending.

Weekend Box Office Wrap Up: January 2nd, 2012

Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol topped the charts again over the weekend, grossing an additional $31.2 million. The spy film now has a total of just over $134 million – just a smidgen more than Mission: Impossible 3’s final gross.

M:I4 has now become Cruise’s fifteenth $100+ grosser as a star (sixteen if you include his extended cameo in Tropic Thunder) and it again highlights his bankability; even his recent ‘flops’ Knight and Day and Valkyrie grossed $75 million and $83 million respectively.

This fourth instalment of the Mission: Impossible franchise has also been a hit abroad, where it’s grossed almost $200, giving it a total gross of over $324 million. M:I3 topped out at $398 million in 2006, and this new effort will likely surpass that.

Tom Cruise is back at the top of the box office. The diminutive superstar’s latest Mission: Impossible grossed $26 million from Friday to Sunday, giving the fourth film in the long running spy franchise a $58 million total. Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol has grossed over $100 million worldwide and when all is said and done, the film will out gross 2006’s Mission: Impossible III both here and abroad. Mission: Accomplished.

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows was second banking an additional $17 million, upping the Robert Downey Jr. film’s total to over $76 million. The Sherlock sequel has now grossed over $100 million worldwide.

Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked brought in over $13 million. The family flick has now scored $50 million, a disappointing number considering the grosses for the previous installments, ...

‘Sherlock’ Season 2 Trailers Tease The Detective’s Return to Action

Most everyone is familiar with director Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes movies starring Robert Downey Jr. That franchise offers an “updated” take on the iconic Sir Arthur Conan Doyle character – one that still retains the original Victorian-era setting of the author’s source material, but brings a modern-day Hollywood blockbuster sensibility to the proceedings.

However, fewer people have yet to watch the first season of Sherlock, a BBC TV mini-series adaptation of Doyle’s creation that takes place against a contemporary backdrop, as co-conceived by current Doctor Who show-runner Steven Moffat and actor/writer Mark Gatiss.

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows (read our review) topped the box office over the weekend grossing $40 million. It’s not a bad number – but it was less than the $62 million that the first film grossed in 2009. It could be Robert Downey Jr fatigue, as the star has been in six films since he made his “comeback” with Iron Man in 2008, and all of these (excluding maybe The Soloist) were heavily marketed, with the star being front and center in every campaign.

It might also be that audiences still appear to be apathetic to most big releases over the last few months, finding others ways to spend their hard earned cash. Time will tell if Holmes reaches the first film’s $209 million gross ($524 million worldwide), if it ...

Sherlock Holmes is back to tackle his most daunting case yet, in Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows. ‘Sherlock Holmes 2′ Featurette: Moriarty, Gypsies, & More Action

“More of what you loved last time” might as well be the marketing tagline for the upcoming Warner Bros. sequel, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows.

Trailers and TV spots released for the film so far have focused largely on selling it as having more of everything that moviegoers (by and large) enjoyed in the first Sherlock Holmes – including, many a scene with Holmes (Robert Downey Jr.) being clever and kicking ass, often with the assistance of Dr. John Watson (Jude Law).

A new featurette released for the Sherlock Holmes followup focuses a bit more on two additions to the (acting) party: Jared Harris as Holme’s sinister opponent, Professor Moriarty, and Noomi Rapace as the gypsy Sim, a mysterious woman who figures into Moriarty’s latest (and, potentially, greatest) evil plan.

It’s not exactly a shock to hear that Warner Bros. already has plans to make Sherlock Holmes 3. Judging by the slew of positive reactions to early footage shown from Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows – which hits theaters in about two months – the studio isn’t jumping the gun here by assuming the Sherlock sequel will be a smash hit.

A Game of Shadows scribers Kieran and Michele Mulroney were actually hired on some three months before director Guy Ritchie’s first Sherlock Holmes movie was released in theaters. So there’s actually all the more a precedent for this move on Warner Bros.’ part.

While artsier or “Oscar bait” flicks tend to flood theaters near the end of any year, there’s always room for some good cinematic roller coaster rides. December 2011 will be no different, seeing how we have two high-octane sequels due to hit the scene: Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol and Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows.

The previously-released Game of Shadows teaser trailer went the customary route of selling the sequel as being bigger, badder, and featuring even more risque humor or quips than its popular predecessor. Now we have a full-blown preview for the Sherlock Holmes followup… and it basically takes the same approach.

Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law will be back for another Victorian romp in this winter’s Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, the sequel to Guy Ritchie’s “updated” take on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s most famous creations: the brilliant-but-incorrigible detective Holmes (Downey Jr.) and his ever-loyal comrade, Dr. Watson (Law).

An official teaser trailer has been unveiled for the followup to Sherlock Holmes, which hit it big at the box office and, in general, entertained moviegoers of all shades back in 2009. Thus we have the inevitable question: Can Ritchie and Co. catch lightning in a bottle a second time?

First ‘Sherlock Holmes 2′ Posters Reveal Moriarty & Noomi Rapace

A trailer for Guy Ritchie’s sequel, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, will (unsurprisingly) premiere in theaters in front of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 this upcoming Friday. So keep an eye out for it to arrive online before the week is out.

In the meantime, two posters for the Sherlock Holmes sequel have made their way online, offering fans an early look at Jared Harris as the nefarious Professor Moriarty and Noomi Rapace as the mysterious gypsy, Sim.

The Mad Men actor and Girl With the Dragon Tattoo actress are the two big additions to the Sherlock Holmes franchise, which still features Robery Downey Jr. as the film’s eponymous detective and Jude Law as his ever-loyal (if often infuriated) associate, Dr. Watson.

‘Avatar’ Tops List of Most Pirated Movies in 2010

There are plenty of threats to the entertainment industry every year, but movie piracy consistently comes up as the biggest. Authorities continue to seek avenues to shut down the illegal downloading of movies, but apparently it is not enough. In 2010, nearly 100 million downloads were recorded – and those were just the top ten most pirated movies of the year.

The misconception with pirated movies is that those who watch on their computer are not actually going to the theater. For the most part, we can assume this is true. But when a film like Avatar comes in at the top spot with 16.5 million illegal downloads, one must wonder how many of those people also contributed to the movie’s record-breaking $2.7 billion at the worldwide box office.
