Wes Craven Says ‘Scream 5’ Is Happening

When Scream 4 hit theaters this past April, it wasn’t the box office smash that director Wes Craven and producer Bob Weinstein had hoped for – especially compared to its predecessors. While it made a little over twice its $40 million budget worldwide, it made $2 million less than that domestically. (Eek.)

Which is why it’s surprising, some five months later, to hear Wes Craven say that Scream 5 is almost definitely a go — though he might not be directing.

The Weinstein Brothers may have decided to resuscitate the Scream franchise after a twelve-year hiatus, but they weren’t always dead set on developing another sequel. In fact, they initially considered remaking the original film instead.

Fortunately, screenwriter Kevin Williamson crafted a storyline for Scream 4 that was intended to work as both a follow-up to the previous films and as the first chapter in a new trilogy – at least that was the plan.

Whether it was a clever bit of marketing misdirection or the result of those controversial on-set rewrites, the fact remains that Scream 4 didn’t exactly pass the torch to a new generation the way that we’d been led to believe it would. ‘Scream 5′ Appears Dead; Franchise To Be Rebooted?

Scream 4 got off to a relatively modest start at the box office in its opening weekend, but experienced a pretty huge drop-off over the Easter holiday frame. That news left many a fan of the horror franchise wondering: what exactly does that mean for Scream 5 – and the future of the series in general?

Wes Craven has said in the past that he’s up for directing another Scream trilogy; however, with the fourth flick in the series underperforming at the box office, that doesn’t look likely to happen. Here’s the more disconcerting question for Ghostface fans: Does that mean the franchise could eventually end up being rebooted?

Box Office

Rio was the box office champion over the weekend after grossing an estimated $40 million. The animated film which features the vocal talents of Anne Hathaway, Jesse Eisenberg, Tracy Morgan, will.i.am, Jamie Foxx and George Lopez surpassed predictions to again show that animated films are big at the box office. This could be the start of a new animated franchise for 20th Century Fox, giving the studio a steady income for the next few years.

The Scream Trilogy Primer

We have our Scream 4 review here, but right here we’re taking a look back at the original Scream films.

In this latest addition to the franchise, Wes Craven revisits Woodsboro, CA eleven years after the conclusion of Scream 3 - and today we’ve put together a quick summary of the original trilogy to help moviegoers get caught-up before coming face-to-face with Ghostface again.

In the interest of keeping things simple (and useful with respect to the series going forward), we’ll be focusing the series summary on characters and events that factor into the events portrayed in Scream 4.

Wes Craven Is Up For New ‘Scream’ Trilogy

Horror maestro Wes Craven will be back on familiar turf next month with Scream 4, a semi-reboot for the horror franchise that will feature familiar faces like Neve Campbell as Sidney Prescott, but will also introduce a whole new pack of young stars to headline future series installments – or get off’d in the fourth film.

Dimension Films is serious about having Scream 4 be the first in a new trilogy, and is already on the lookout for a writer to begin work on Scream 5. Craven has overseen more than his share of slasher films already, but remains open to the idea of an additional pair of Scream pics.

SR Pick [Video]: Ghostface Killer On The Street

You don’t have to be Drew Barrymore for Ghostface to ask for your favorite scary movie. The famous villain from Wes Craven’s Scream franchise hit the streets to ask random strangers the same question.

Jay Leno’s “Jaywalking” sketch on The Tonight Show has always exploited the regular pedestrian’s stupidity. This video takes the same interview and editing style with the masked killer. “Man on street” interviews are always a shot in the dark, but Ghostface’s are pretty hilarious.

Sporting a modified voice and a handheld microphone, Ghostface gave a handful of interviews for our good friends at NextMovie. Of course, his attitude has always been a problem and he doesn’t exactly give everybody a fair chance to answer.

David Arquette Talks ‘Scream 4′

Earlier this month we got our first look at the teaser trailer for Scream 4 – a film that reunites franchise veterans Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox, and David Arquette with the infamous Ghostface.

Not only did that sneak peek suggest that our returning heroes are more than glorified cameos, it also confirmed that the killer is playing by a whole new set of rules.

Shock Till You Drop had the opportunity to chat with Arquette about his role in Terry Gilliam’s upcoming short film The Legend of Hallowdega, and managed to sneak in a few questions about Scream 4 as well.

The entire Scream saga is built around surprises and twist endings, so everyone involved is probably legally prohibited from dropping too many details — but Arquette does tease at the quality of the film and ...

The original Scream is that rare example of a horror movie that did everything right. Half-satire, half-thriller, it was both critically and financially successful—the series has made over half a billion dollars altogether—and spawned two underwhelming sequels plus a plethora of heinous knockoffs. (Urban Legend, I’m looking in your direction…)

Despite years of insisting that number three would be the last of the Screams, in the past year, director Wes Craven and writer Kevin Williamson seemingly succumbed to massive paychecks and committed to a fourth. (Or, as those in the business refer to it, a “fourquel.”)

Weekend Movie News Wrap Up: February 21, 2010

Box Office

It looks like the relationship between Leonardo DiCaprio and director Martin Scorsese is going to continue. Each film the duo makes grosses more money than the last and Shutter Island is no exception. The thriller took an estimated $40 million over the weekend giving the pair the best opening in their respective careers.

Last week’s champion Valentine’s Day had to settle for the runner-up spot with a weekend take of $17 million. With $89 million in the bank so far it looks like that mooted sequel will be rushed ...

Another ‘Scream’ Trilogy On The Way?

Hot on the heels of the news that another Scream film is happening, we get the possibility of there being not one but three more Scream films, bringing the franchise total to six.

It’s already been confirmed that the original writer of the series, Kevin Williamson, is going to be penning the fourth film, but rumblings have it that he’ll write the whole trilogy.

What suggests this new set of films is a screen capture (shown below) that was sent to Rope Of Silicon showing the report of Scream 4, 5 and 6 in the works.

Now I should point out that this report is totally unconfirmed and therefore this “news” should be treated as a rumor at this point in time. However the ball that’s started rolling with at least one more Scream film suggests that this trilogy report may be legit.
