This week in DVD and Blu-ray things range from good to mediocre on the new release list and from good to most excellent in terms of re-releases. We have Super 8, Conan the Barbarian, Spy Kids 4, Scream 4, The Devil’s Double and Doctor Who on the new release list and we have new versions of Three Amigos, 12 Angry Men and Rushmore on the oldies but goodies list.

We’ve been anticipating this week for some time now. September had its fair share of high-profile releases like Star Wars, Citizen Kane and Ben-Hur, but the first week in October brings a number of great titles to shelves.

The re-releases are again the highlight as Disney brings Lion King out of the vault for a special Blu-ray release in both 2D and 3D. Even better (to some), Quentin Taratino has brought Pulp Fiction and Jackie Brown to the format. There are plenty more to choose from this week, including a few great new releases as well.

Wes Craven Says ‘Scream 5’ Is Happening

When Scream 4 hit theaters this past April, it wasn’t the box office smash that director Wes Craven and producer Bob Weinstein had hoped for – especially compared to its predecessors. While it made a little over twice its $40 million budget worldwide, it made $2 million less than that domestically. (Eek.)

Which is why it’s surprising, some five months later, to hear Wes Craven say that Scream 5 is almost definitely a go — though he might not be directing.

When asked if a Scream 5 was on the way, courtesy of Movieweb, Craven said:

Harvey Weinstein Insists ‘Scream 5′ Will Still Happen

The Weinstein Brothers may have decided to resuscitate the Scream franchise after a twelve-year hiatus, but they weren’t always dead set on developing another sequel. In fact, they initially considered remaking the original film instead.

Fortunately, screenwriter Kevin Williamson crafted a storyline for Scream 4 that was intended to work as both a follow-up to the previous films and as the first chapter in a new trilogy – at least that was the plan.

Whether it was a clever bit of marketing misdirection or the result of those controversial on-set rewrites, the fact remains that Scream 4 didn’t exactly pass the torch to a new generation the way that we’d been led to believe it would. “What box office slump?” was the question Fast Five asked this weekend. The fifth installment in the Fast and the Furious franchise bested all of its predecessors, including 2009′s record-breaking Fast & Furious, by opening with an estimated $83.6 million gross in the U.S. That helped raise the overall American box office revenue for the weekend – which marked a 50% gain over this same period last year.

‘Scream 5′ Appears Dead; Franchise To Be Rebooted?

Scream 4 got off to a relatively modest start at the box office in its opening weekend, but experienced a pretty huge drop-off over the Easter holiday frame. That news left many a fan of the horror franchise wondering: what exactly does that mean for Scream 5 – and the future of the series in general?

Wes Craven has said in the past that he’s up for directing another Scream trilogy; however, with the fourth flick in the series underperforming at the box office, that doesn’t look likely to happen. Here’s the more disconcerting question for Ghostface fans: Does that mean the franchise could eventually end up being rebooted?

The overall critical reception for Scream 4 seems by and large mixed (it currently has a 57% rating over at Rotten Tomatoes), ...

Weekend Movie News Wrap Up: April 24th, 2011

This week:

The Easter box office goes to the birds, elephants, and Madea; Bob and Harvey Weinstein find something to Crow about; Sean Penn, Ryan Gosling and Josh Brolin look to become members of the Gangster Squad; Emile Hirsch has joined the Savages; Relativity Media sets a date for House at the End of the Street; and Denis Villeneuve will take charge of Prisoners.

Box Office

Rio reigned triumphant for a second time over the Easter weekend, dropping only 32% to an estimated $26.6 million over the holiday frame, and upping its total cume to $81.1 million. Twentieth Century Fox is almost undoubtedly developing plans for a sequel to the kid-friendly toon, with the hopes that this will be the beginning of a new franchise that could match the popularity of Blue Sky Animation’s Ice Age series. More colorful, celebrity-voiced animal characters in 3D, anyone? Anyone?

The box office travels to Rio, while we Scream again; Russell Brand sings Rock of Ages; Pesci gets Gotti; The Dark Tower gets a new writer; Galifianakis may have a hangover but he won’t R.I.P; Franco attends Jump Street – but will Johnny Depp? Trumbull may have Silent Running but he’ll be moving at 60 fps and Hallelujah – there’s finally a Jeff Buckley biopic.

Box Office

Rio was the box office champion over the weekend after grossing an estimated $40 million. The animated film which features the vocal talents of Anne Hathaway, Jesse Eisenberg, Tracy Morgan, will.i.am, Jamie Foxx and George Lopez surpassed predictions to again show that animated films are big at the box office. This could be the start of a new animated franchise for 20th Century Fox, giving the studio a steady income for the next few years.

Back in 1996, famed scary-movie director Wes Craven teamed with writer Kevin Williamson on a film project that didn’t just introduce the world to a new iconic slasher personality (in the form of Ghostface), the pair succeeded in making a genre film that took every horror trope imaginable – and turned it on its head.

Scream, as well as its subsequent sequels, were love-letters to horror film fans with plenty of meta-references including Stab, the film series within a film series, as well as the notorious “rules for survival” that served as tongue-in-cheek winks at the genre – while also serving as an ironclad set of guidelines for each film to work around.

We have our Scream 4 review here, but right here we’re taking a look back at the original Scream films.

In this latest addition to the franchise, Wes Craven revisits Woodsboro, CA eleven years after the conclusion of Scream 3 - and today we’ve put together a quick summary of the original trilogy to help moviegoers get caught-up before coming face-to-face with Ghostface again.

In the interest of keeping things simple (and useful with respect to the series going forward), we’ll be focusing the series summary on characters and events that factor into the events portrayed in Scream 4.

The last week of March is one of the year’s best in DVD and Blu-ray releases. Natalie Portman’s award-winning performance and Disney’s 50th animated feature film hit home video, as well as a pair of fantastic Blu-ray re-releases.

Although some controversy between Natalie Portman and her dance double has overshadowed the home video release of Black Swan, it could also be considered extra publicity. Disney’s latest blockbuster, Tangled, hits shelves as well as Fair Game and All Good Things, a pair of small films that might grab a few new looks.

‘Scream 4′ Clips Are Scary For The Wrong Reason

Wes Craven’s latest slasher sequel, Scream 4, will feature a whole slew of new teens scrambling to survive Ghostface’s latest reign of terror. Dimension Films hopes to kick off another trilogy with the fourth installment and Craven is game for that – though the director has admitted that in some ways the fourth Scream pic is not really “a Wes Craven film.”

Three clips from Scream 4 have been released and they offer a glimpse at some of the young faces that are new to the franchise – while also illustrating what Craven meant when he semi-disowned the movie.

Wes Craven Is Up For New ‘Scream’ Trilogy

Horror maestro Wes Craven will be back on familiar turf next month with Scream 4, a semi-reboot for the horror franchise that will feature familiar faces like Neve Campbell as Sidney Prescott, but will also introduce a whole new pack of young stars to headline future series installments – or get off’d in the fourth film.

Dimension Films is serious about having Scream 4 be the first in a new trilogy, and is already on the lookout for a writer to begin work on Scream 5. Craven has overseen more than his share of slasher films already, but remains open to the idea of an additional pair of Scream pics.
