Happy Friday everyone! For our first Friday of November 2009, we’ve again gathered the latest posters to come out for this week’s poster round-up. So, before you head out to see this week’s opening movies, namely The Men Who Star at goats, A Christmas Carol, The Box and The Fourth Kind, check out the latest promo sheets below.

‘Scream 4′ Goes 3D, Wes Craven Almost Signed On to Direct

Scream 4 is coming and it might be coming in 3D! According to /Film, there is a rumor out there that the latest installment in the popular slasher franchise will be filmed in stereovision. It wouldn’t be the first time that a horror movie has used 3D to enhance its fright factor. One recent example is the abysmal My Bloody Valentine. Ugh. Honestly, if the story sucks, I don’t care if a giant, digitally projected knife is coming at my face. It’s just not scary.

On that note, I’m really hoping Scream 4 brings the franchise back to its roots. When it came out, Scream was critically praised for its clever mix of humor, satire, and genuinely frightening horror. For my money, there hasn’t been a slasher film as good since. Even Scream 2 was pretty awesome, though I don’t want to get into the mess that was Scream 3.

Anyway, my point is that a good horror film comes from a good script and good direction, plain and simple, which is why I have been eagerly awaiting news that director Wes Craven would finally sign on to direct Scream 4. According to the same article in /Film, Craven may not be that far off, with sources allegedly saying he’s “closer than ever” to officially joining the film.

So far, we know that Neve Campbell will reprise her role as Sidney Prescott alongside Courtney Cox and David Arquette. Thus far, those actors are the only members of the original franchise said to be returning. The hope is that Scream 4 will be a reboot for the series and the first in a new trilogy.

Weekend Movie News Wrap Up: September 27, 2009

This week:

The box office is still Cloudy; Neve Campbell Screams again; Dourif and Plummer confess to a Priest; TNT give some Basterd’s $12 million and Paul Dano decides to Cruise with Diaz.

Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs retained the top spot and banked another $24.6 million over the weekend. The animated tale has now made a pretty good $60 million so far.

Bruce Willis had to settle for the runner-up position for Surrogates. The comic book adaptation made a so-so $15 million despite a trim 88 minute running time.

The Fame remake grossed $10 million over the weekend. There’s really nothing that I can say about this.

The Informant brought in a little under $7 million on its second weekend giving the new Matt Damon/Steven Soderbergh team-up $20 million in the bank so far. Off a slim 33% percent from last week means that this looks to have some legs.

Tyler Perry’s I Can Do Bad All By Myself made just under $5 million this weekend giving the film a $44 million total. One word – profit!

The Dennis Quaid starrer Pandorum had a disappointing start with a just $4.4 million. DVD and cult status await.

Aaron Eckhart and Jennifer Aniston’s Love Happens brought in another $4.3 million. With just $14 million so far this will need strong international sales and DVD to seem like a good idea.

Megan Fox’s Jennifer’s Body dipped almost 50% from last weekends debut. With a total of just $12 million it looks like Fox is going to have to gain audience sympathy and some humility if she wants a career that won’t end up on the path marked direct-to-DVD.

9 was ninth this weekend after it grossed another $2.8 million. With $27 million as a total it would appear that this isn’t the break out hit that many had hoped.

Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds brought in another $2.7 million giving the Brad Pitt starrer a $114 million total.

Movie News

1. Neve Campbell will return to the Scream franchise after the actress spent the best part of the last decade saying that she wouldn’t return to the horror film series.

The Weinstein Company plans to shoot Scream 4 in April or May, and they see this fourth film as a starting point for a new trilogy.

Campbell will joing Courtney Cox and David Arquette in the new film that might be directed by original helmer Wes Craven.

2. Christopher Plummer and Brad Dourif have joined the cast of Scott Stewart’s Priest.

Paul Bettany leads the cast as a priest turned vampire killer. Maggie Q and Karl Urban also star.

3. TNT has paid just under $12 million for the television rights to Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds.

The sale must come as a relief (and much needed cash) for The Weinstein Company who have a lot riding on the Brad Pitt film.

Television rights are usually 8-10% of a films box office take.

If you haven’t seen it – go see it now. It’s one of Tarantino’s best films.

4. Paul Dano has joined the cast of the new Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz action-comedy.

The actor will star alongside the Vanilla Sky pair in the James Mangold directed film that is currently without a title.

“Dano will play a charming but mysterious scientist whose invention is at the center of Cruise and Diaz’s chase.”

The script must be good because it took Cruise months to sign on after nearly every other script in Hollywood landed on his desk.

It’s officially mid-week and here’s what’s going on:

Harry Potter waves his wand at midnight and conjures box office records; the Heathers may be gone for good; Cox and Arquette are Screaming again; Robin Hood has its King Richard; The Limey may get a sequel; it’s a wrap for Nightmare on Elm Street; The Crow will fly again for the first time; Warner Bros. may be returning to the Major League; and The Toronto Film Festival has a list of flicks that could become next year’s greats.

Let’s get to it:

1. Variety is reporting that Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince conjured up a whopping $20 million in box office receipts from midnight showings alone. If this figure holds, it would make the sixth installment of J.K. Rowling’s wizard adventure the highest-grossing midnight debut of all time. Previous record holders were The Dark Knight ($18 million) and Revenge of the Sith ($17 million).

I myself had to walk almost a quarter-mile to my theater at 1 a.m. this morning to see HBP, the parking lot was so full. People love that Harry…

2. Winona Ryder recently got Generation Xers all in a tizzy by once again floating the notion that there could be a forthcoming sequel to the 1988 high school shooting black comedy, Heathers. This isn’t the first time Ryder has touched on the subject, however this time, Heathers director Michael Lehmann is shooting down the rumor, claiming “Winona’s been talking about this for years — she brings it up every once in a while and [screenwriter] Dan Waters and I will joke about it, but as far as I know there’s no script and no plans to do the sequel.”

That’s good news: I don’t think we’re quite ready to start laughing at school shootings again.

3. David Arquette let E! Online know that he and wife Courtney Cox-Arquette are officially signed on for Scream 4. We’ve known the deal was in the works for some time but you don’t get much better confirmation than this:

I fell in love with my wife on Scream, so the opportunity to bring [Dewey] back to life and for my wife to play that really bitchy character again, it’s just going to be really fun…It’s just great.

Awwwww, how romantic! Let’s hope one (or both) of them gets butchered. Four films in a horror franchise is longer than anybody deserves to live.

4. Actor Danny Huston sure is keeping busy: he’s was the head vamp in 30 Days of Night, Wolverine’s nemesis Col. Stryker – he has an upcoming role playing a god in the Clash of the Titans remake and now he’s been crowned king of Ridley Scott’s Robin Hood.

That’s right, Huston will play the role of King Richard I. In Robin Hood folklore, Richard’s time away from England while fighting The Crusades is what led to the power-grabs of Prince John and the Sheriff of Nottingham. The role sounds minor, but I’m sure Huston will make it memorable.

5. Steven Soderbergh’s wife, former E! host Jules Asner, was doing in interview with Adam Carolla when she let a little nugget slip regarding Soderbergh’s 1999 cult-hit The Limey, starring Terrence Stamp: “[Steven] wants to do a sequel to The Limey and Terrence wants to do it.”

The Limey 2: it’s just wishful thinking right now – but then again this IS Hollywood, and where there’s a buzz, there’s a way…

6. The Crow will fly again – but we should all just pretend like its the first time.

Blade director Stephen Norrington has reportedly turned in a draft of a Crow script that is “a whole new story about a whole new character.” Fans of Alex Proyas’ (Knowing) 1994 version of The Crow (starring the late Brandon Lee), try not to be too disappointed.

7. Thanks to Twitter we now know that the A Nightmare On Elm Street remake has officially wrapped its shoot. As tweeted by producer Brad Fuller: “Just wrapped- sad. This was a fun movie to make,”.

The film now goes into post-production so that they can add all the crazy f/x needed to transform Jackie Earle Haley (Watchmen) into your worst razor-fingered nightmare.

A Nightmare On Elm Street will be in theaters on April 16, 2010.

8. Actor Bob Uecker, who famously played booze-swilling announcer Harry Doyle in 1989s Major League, recently let it be known that he’s been contact by the creative team behind the Major League trilogy (yep, there’s three of them), about reprising his role for Major League 4.

Although this year marks the 20th anniversary of the baseball comedy that helped usher the careers of Charlie Sheen, Wesley Snipes, Dennis Haysbert, Renne Russo and others, early speculation is that Major League 4 will go straight to the minors, a.k.a. the DVD bargain bin.

Weekend Movie News Wrap Up: June 21, 2009

This week:

First there’s The Proposal and then there’s The Hangover; Moneyball gets thrown a curve-ball; Scream 4 isn’t Neve Campbell’s favorite scary movie; it looks like The A-Team won’t be Common and there’s an up and coming Red Dawn.

Box Office

Sandra Bullock scored the biggest opening of her career with The Proposal. The romantic comedy which co-stars Ryan Reynolds grossed $34 million over the weekend.

The Hangover remained a popular choice and moved into the runner-up spot with a weekend take of $26 million. With $152 million in the bank after three weeks, it looks like this is going to be a hugely profitable film and franchise for Warner Bros.

Up took in another $21 million from Friday to Monday giving the Pixar film a mighty $224 million tally.

Jack Black’s Year One opened a disappointing third this weekend with a gross of $20 million. It’ll need good legs to see a decent profit.

The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 stole $11 million from audiences over the weekend giving the Denzel Washington/ John Travolta thriller a total gross of $43 million.

Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian took in another $7 million giving the Ben Stiller comedy a stellar $155 million.

The interstellar Star Trek took just under $5 million to give the film a $239 million total tally.

Land of the Lost’s total now stands at $43 million after taking almost $4 million over the weekend. Not a good total for a film that cost a reported $150 million.

Eddie Murphy’s Imagine That dropped 43% from last weekend to $3 million. The film now has a terrible total of $11 million.

Terminator Salvation rounds out the top ten with $3 million. The Christian Bale film now has a total of $119 million.

Movie News

1. Columbia Pictures has scrapped production of the Steven Soderbergh directed, Brad Pitt starring, Moneyball – even though the film was due to start shooting on Monday!

Apparently when Steve Zaillian handed in the latest draft last week it wasn’t what studio head Amy Pascal had expected and she got cold feet on the film due to the $50 million budget. The sports drama has now been put into turnaround in the hope that another studio decides to make it.

“Moneyball is based on the bestselling Michael Lewis book about Billy Beane (Pitt), the former phenom who undermined his playing career by taking a big paycheck before he was ready, who resurfaced as Oakland A’s general manager who found success fielding competitive teams for low cost, compared to the payrolls of league rivals like the New York Yankees.”

2. It’s looking like Scream 4 will not star Neve Campbell.

Franchise creator Kevin Williamson twittered:

“Trying to figure out a Sid-less scenario. She won’t do it. This sucks.”

David Arquette and Courtney are in negotiations to return.

There’s still no news on whether Wes Craven will return to direct.

3. Common was mooted as a possible candidate to play B.A Baracas in the big screen version of The A-Team. Looks like they’ll have to find another actor to step into Mr. T’s shoes.

The actor-rapper has signed on to the Queen Latifah sports film Just Wright.

Considering that the film starts shooting in July, it looks like he’ll be unable to join Liam Nesson and Bradley Cooper in Joe Carnahan’s film.

4. Chris Hemsworth, Josh Peck and Adrianne Palicki have joined the cast of MGM/UA’s Red Dawn remake. The new version is rumored to feature an invasion of Chinese troops on U.S. soil, instead of Russians.

In this Mid week’s Wrap up: Javier Bardem eyes Wall Street; The Cox’s Scream again; Henson does Kung-Fu; Jones goes from Moon to The Deep; Robert Pattinson and Pierce Brosnan Remember Me and we get an eyeful of Bruce Willis’ Dicks.

1. No Wall Street For Old Men.

Oliver Stone and 20th Century Fox want Javier Bardem to star opposite Michael Douglas and Transformer 2 Shia LaBeouf in Wall Street 2.
Whilst Bardem hasn’t met with Stone or the studio as of yet, the Spanish star is at the top of their wish list to play the villain in the sequel to the Oscar-winning hit.

Apparently the plot of the movie involves LaBeouf’s character seeking revenge on (what would be) Bardem’s evil stock trader. In order to navigate the choppy waters of Wall Street the kid befriends Douglas’ Gordon Gecko who has been released from prison following the shenanigans of the first film. The pair form an unlikely friendship as Gecko tries to rebuild his relationship with his daughter, who is the fiance of LaBeouf’s character.

The original is a highly-rated 1980’s classic (though a bit dated) and I’m interested to see what Stone, Douglas et al bring to the table in these troubled financial times.

Wall Street 2 starts shooting in August, hopefully for a February 2010 release.

2. Entertainment Weekly is reporting that Courteney Cox Arquette and David Arquette are in negotiations for Scream 4 (or whatever they end up calling it). It’s expected that the couple will only have cameos or supporting roles in the film that is being aimed at a younger demographic.

Kevin Williamson is penning the Scream 4 script (and allegedly two more sequels that would form a companion trilogy to the 90’s franchise).

There’s no word on whether director Wes Craven will Scream again or if Neve Campbell will return.

3. Taraji P. Henson has joined the cast of The Kung-Fu Kid.
Henson will play the mother of Jaden (son of Will) Smith, who plays the titular kid.
Jackie Chan is signed-on play the 21st Century Mr. Myiagi, who has incidentally been renamed Mr Han in this remake of the 80’s coming-of-age drama, The Karate Kid.

I still ask the question – why?

4. Moon director Duncan Jones will direct Escape From the Deep.
According to Variety:

“Escape” tells the (true) story of a legendary World War II U.S. navy submarine that sank after a torpedo malfunction, leaving the crew stranded on the bottom of the Pacific Ocean. Faced with drowning, nine men made it out alive after swimming the 180 feet to the surface without getting the bends.”

Alex Kershaw wrote the script from his book of the same name.

FYI: Jones is the son of legendary recording artist David Bowie.

5. Twilight’s Robert Pattinson, along with Pierce Brosnan, Chris Cooper, Lost’s Emilie de Ravin and possibly Lena Olin will star in Allen Coulter’s Remember Me.

“Pattinson plays a young man whose brother’s suicide has split up his parents (Brosnan and Olin) and left him sleepwalking through life. De Ravin will play a young woman who, after watching her mother get killed before her eyes, seizes life to its fullest. Cooper is being courted to play her father.”

Sounds like Oscar bait.

Another ‘Scream’ Trilogy On The Way?

Hot on the heels of the news that another Scream film is happening, we get the possibility of there being not one but three more Scream films, bringing the franchise total to six.

It’s already been confirmed that the original writer of the series, Kevin Williamson, is going to be penning the fourth film, but rumblings have it that he’ll write the whole trilogy.

What suggests this new set of films is a screen capture (shown below) that was sent to Rope Of Silicon showing the report of Scream 4, 5 and 6 in the works.

Now I should point out that this report is totally unconfirmed and therefore this “news” should be treated as a rumor at this point in time. However the ball that’s started rolling with at least one more Scream film suggests that this trilogy report may be legit.

So let’s just take it for a moment that this is in fact true and there is another Scream trilogy on the way – I don’t think it’s a good idea. Since it’s continuing on the series (i.e. numbers 4, 5 and 6) I don’t really see the point; sure, you’re going to get the name recognition but is it just me or did the series decline after the first film – going from an original, pretty creative idea (one which has influenced tons of horror movies since) to just silly and dumb by the third one?

Something they could have done (which I thought they would have went with instead of just continuing the series) would be to do a reboot and start another trilogy from scratch. However even that I think it is pretty pointless because it’s not been that long since Scream 3 (or even the first Scream for that matter), certainly not long enough for a reboot to be warranted.

So either way, I think this is a bad idea – outside of hardcore fans of the series I can’t see this appealing to audiences any more than any of the other horror films that get so plentifully released these days. Even as a single fourth film in the series it seems to be only an attempt to draw money from the name recognition and popularity of a past set of films.

However a couple of rays of hope are that the original writer of the series is confirmed for at least one film and horror master Wes Craven has shown interest in returning to direct. At least that gives the whole idea a stronger backbone of credibility and worthiness.

It’s the most important day in the movie calendar – and that’s just not because it’s time for the Weekend Movie News Wrap Up but it’s also Oscar night!

This week:

Tyler Perry tops the box office; Wes Craven talks Scream 4; The Dark Knight is mildly successful; Ashton Kutcher and Katherine Heigel know Five Killers (hint – it’s not their last few movies); Sandra Bullock has a Blindside (it’s the only reason for Hope Floats) and Martin Lawrence goes Back To Africa.

Box Office

Tyler Perry continues to surprise with each movie. Madea Goes To Jail should lock up about $40 million over the weekend giving the control freak a career best despite terrible reviews.

Liam Neeson’s Taken closes in on the $100 million mark with a weekend gross of $11 million. Did anyone imagine this film making that much money?

He’s Just Not That Into You shows pretty good legs for a romantic comedy managing another $10 million. People are just that into it!

Friday The 13^thhad a terrible drop which isn’t unexpected because horror movies usually suffer a huge decline on their second weekend and because it opened on Friday The 13^th. The remake should manage about $10million over the Oscar weekend.

Speaking of Oscars; Slumdog Millionaire should take another $9-10 million bringing it up to the $100 million mark. Expect that to increase when it grabs a few Oscars.

Comedy Fired Up had a weak $8 million debut. That’s pretty much what Kevin James’ Paul Blart: Mall Cop grossed this weekend. Who ever imagined that the phrases “Kevin James” and “good legs” would be used in the same sentence?

Movie News

1. Wes Craven has talked about Scream 4. It looks like he hasn’t ruled out directing the film, but if you’re a fan of the franchise I wouldn’t hold your breath. Craven told Bloody Disgusting:

“It would take it being really as good a script as the first one was and the pay day reflects what I’ve done for that company and what I’ve gone through on Cursed.”

Sounds like he’s playing hard ball. He should go work for Marvel!

2. The Dark Knight has reached yet another milestone. The Caped Crusader film has now grossed $1 billion around the world!

The film has now banked $533 million domestically and $567 million overseas. Factor in DVD and TV sales and the film must have made some people very rich in these rough economic times.

I wonder what Joel Schumacher has to say about all this?

Warner Bros has apparently stopped production on Batman 3 due to the low grosses. Joke!

I can only imagine that this gross increases once Heath Legder wins an Oscar.

3. Ashton Kutcher and Katherine Heigel will star in Five Killers.

According to Variety:

“The story kicks off when a woman meets the man of her dreams while on vacation. Married bliss is turned upside down when they discover that their neighbors may be assassins hired to kill them.”

The film will be directed by Legally Blonde and Monster In-Law director Robert Luketic.

I don’t think that I need to add anything else!

4. Sandra Bullock will star in Blindside. The sports drama will be directed by John Lee Hancock, the man behind The Rookie and The Alamo.

According to Variety:

“The story follows Michael Oher, projected to be one of the first players selected in this year’s NFL draft. He was homeless as a teen and was taken in by a well-to-do family. Bullock will portray the matriarch of the conservative suburban household Oher joins.”

Sounds very boring!

5. Martin Lawrence will star in the “comedy” Back To Africa.

Variety inflicts the following synopsis:

“The comedy centers on a working-class man from Queens who discovers he is heir to the throne of an African country and travels there to claim his birthright.”

Here’s a bit of advice – go and watch Coming to America in reverse. It’ll save time and money.

‘Scream 4′ Is Happening

Yes, you really did read the title correctly. Scream 4 is a reality at Dimension Films. It looks like the Weinsteins really need the cash.

In July Dimension films announced that they would be “restarting” the horror franchise, however Bloody Disgusting has a few more details on the film and it would appear that some of the old crew may be returning in front of (and behind) the camera.

Original writer Kevin “Dawson’s Creek” Williamson will be writing the first draft of the script. Time and quality will dictate if this becomes the shooting draft.

There is a pretty good chance that helmer Wes Craven will return to bark orders into the megaphone once again. I’m guessing it beats standing on the sidelines while others rake through your old movies – and directing Cursed!

The studio is also putting out offers for original stars Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox and David Arquette to return. Their acceptance will obviously depend on their schedules and the amount of money offered. So expect them to return – well it’s not like they’re doing much these days.

Dimension hopes that this will be a restart for the franchise and all the major characters will be younger than the now forty something cast of the original.

The original Scream was released in 1996 and it was followed by two sequels and a host of imitators giving horror a self-referential spin before “torture porn” took the genre in a gorier direction. The original title of the film was Scary Movie, but it was changed when the studio thought that it was a terrible title for a film. The title Scream was used because the killer in the films wears a mask which resembles the character in the famous Edvard Munch painting. The title Scary Movie was then used for Dimesnion films Scream spoof series Scary Movie. True horror indeed.

There’s a pretty good chance that this could be fast-tracked for Halloween. Now there’s a scary thought!
